A bosonic Laplacian is a conformally invariant second order differential operator acting on smooth functions defined on domains in Euclidean space and taking values in higher order irreducible representations of the special orthogonal group. In this paper, we firstly introduce the motivation for study of the generalized Maxwell operators and bosonic Laplacians (also known as the higher spin Laplace operators). Then, with the help of connections between Rarita-Schwinger type operators and bosonic Laplacians, we solve Poisson's equation for bosonic Laplacians. A representation formula for bounded solutions to Poisson's equation in Euclidean space is also provided. In the end, we provide Green's formulas for bosonic Laplacians in scalar-valued and Clifford-valued cases, respectively. These formulas reveal that bosonic Laplacians are self-adjoint with respect to a given $L^2$ inner product on certain compact supported function spaces.
A bosonic Laplacian is a conformally invariant second order differential operator acting on smooth functions defined on domains in Euclidean space and taking values in higher order irreducible representations of the special orthogonal group. In this paper, we study boundary value problems involving bosonic Laplacians in the upper-half space and the unit ball. Poisson kernels in the upper-half space and the unit ball are constructed, which give us solutions to the Dirichlet problems with $L^p$ boundary data, $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. We also prove the uniqueness for solutions to the Dirichlet pro…
We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.
The Green function of the fractional Laplacian of the differential order bigger than one and the Green function of its gradient perturbations are comparable for bounded smooth multidimensional open sets if the drift function is in an appropriate Kato class.
We construct Green functions of Dirichlet boundary value problems for sub-Laplacians on certain unbounded domains of a prototype Heisenberg-type group (prototype H-type group, in short). We also present solutions in an explicit form of the Dirichlet problem for the sub-Laplacian with non-zero boundary datum on half-space, quadrant-space, etc, as well as in a strip.
Let $Ω$ be an open, smooth, bounded subset of $ \Bbb R ^n$. In connection with the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^a$ ($a>0$), and more generally for a $2a$-order classical pseudodifferential operator ($ψ$do) $P$ with even symbol, one can define the Dirichlet value $γ_0^{a-1}u$ resp. Neumann value $γ_1^{a-1}u$ of $u(x)$ as the trace resp. normal derivative of $u/d^{a-1}$ on $\partialΩ$, where $d(x)$ is the distance from $x\inΩ$ to $\partialΩ$; they define well-posed boundary value problems for $P$. A Green's formula was shown in a preceding paper, containing a generally nonlocal term $(Bγ_0^{a-1}u,…
We propose analogues of Green's and Picone's identities for the $p$-sub-Laplacian on stratified Lie groups. In particular, these imply a generalised Díaz-Saá inequality for the $p$-sub-Laplacian on stratified Lie groups. Using these we derive a comparison principle and uniqueness of a positive solution to nonlinear hypoelliptic equations on general stratified Lie groups extending to the setting of the general stratified Lie groups previously known results on Euclidean and Heisenberg groups.
We study a discrete model of the Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that preserves the geometric structure of the original continual object. This means that, speaking of a discrete model, we do not mean just the direct replacement of differential operators by difference ones but also a discrete analog of the Riemannian structure. We consider this structure on the appropriate combinatorial analog of differential forms. Self-adjointness and boundness for a discrete Laplacian are proved. We define the Green function for this operator and also derive an explicit formula of the one.
We prove the existence and study properties of the Green function of the unit ball for the Dunkl Laplacian $Δ_k$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As applications we derive the Poisson-Jensen formula for $Δ_k$-subharmonic functions and Hardy-Stein identities for the Poisson integrals of $Δ_k$. We also obtain sharp estimates of the Newton potential kernel, Green function and Poisson kernel in the rank one case in $\mathbb{R}^d$. These estimates contrast sharply with the well-known results in the potential theory of the classical Laplacian.
Green functions play an important role in conformal geometry. In this paper, we explain how to compute explicitly the logarithmic singularities of the Green functions of the conformal powers of the Laplacian. These operators include the Yamabe and Paneitz operators, as well as the conformal fractional powers of the Laplacian arising from scattering theory for Poincaré-Einstein metrics. The results are formulated in terms of Weyl conformal invariants arising from the ambient metric of Fefferman-Graham. As applications we obtain "Green function" characterizations of locally conformally flat mani…
We present a novel definition of variable-order fractional Laplacian on Rn based on a natural generalization of the standard Riesz potential. Our definition holds for values of the fractional parameter spanning the entire open set (0, n/2). We then discuss some properties of the fractional Poisson's equation involving this operator and we compute the corresponding Green function, for which we provide some instructive examples for specific problems.
We derive a variational formula for the outward normal derivative of the Green function for the Schrödinger and Laplace--Beltrami operators, viewed as perturbations of the Laplacian. As an application we begin to characterize elliptic growth---the growth of a domain pushed outward by its own Green function.
We propose the analogues of boundary layer potentials for the sub-Laplacian on homogeneous Carnot groups/stratified Lie groups and prove continuity results for them. In particular, we show continuity of the single layer potential and establish the Plemelj type jump relations for the double layer potential. We prove sub-Laplacian adapted versions of the Stokes theorem as well as of Green's first and second formulae on homogeneous Carnot groups. Several applications to boundary value problems are given. As another consequence, we derive formulae for traces of the Newton potential for the sub-Lap…
We will find Green's function for the standard weighted Laplacian and use the corresponding Green's potential to solve Poisson's equation in the unit disc with zero boundary values, in the sense of radial $L^1$-means, for complex Borel measures $μ$ satisfying the condition $\int_\mathbb{D} (1-|w|^2)^{α+1} d|μ|(w) < \infty$ for $α>-1$.
The Green function has a complex dependence upon its underlying domain and differential operator. We briefly review Hadamard's formula for the first variation of the Green function due to a perturbation of the domain. We then take a different avenue and approximate the change in the Green function when the Laplacian is perturbed into a number of different operators: Helmholtz, Schrödinger and Laplace--Beltrami.
We compute a Green's function giving rise to the solution of the Cauchy problem for the source-free Maxwell's equations on a causal domain $\mathcal{D}$ contained in a geodesically normal domain of the Lorentzian manifold $AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^3$, where $AdS^5$ denotes the simply connected $5$-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space-time. Our approach is to formulate the original Cauchy problem as an equivalent Cauchy problem for the Hodge Laplacian on $\mathcal{D}$ and to seek a solution in the form of a Fourier expansion in terms of the eigenforms of the Hodge Laplacian on $\…
We prove a pointwise control for the Green's function of polyharmonic operators with holes: this control is uniform while holes shrink. For the usual Laplacian, such a control is given by the maximum principle; the techniques developed here applies to general polyharmonic operators for which there is no comparison principle.
We study semilinear problems in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains for non-local operators with a boundary condition. The operators cover and extend the case of the spectral fractional Laplacian. We also study harmonic functions with respect to the non-local operator and boundary behaviour of Green and Poisson potentials.
A class of generalized nonlinear p-Laplacian evolution equations is studied. These equations model radial diffusion-reaction processes in $n\geq 1$ dimensions, where the diffusivity depends on the gradient of the flow. For this class, all local conservation laws of low-order and all Lie symmetries are derived. The physical meaning of the conservation laws is discussed, and one of the conservation laws is used to show that the nonlinear equation can be mapped invertibly into a linear equation by a hodograph transformation in certain cases. The symmetries are used to derive exact group-invariant…
In a conformal class of metrics with positive Yamabe invariant, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of metrics with positive Q curvature. The condition is conformally invariant. We also prove some inequalities between the Green's functions of the conformal Laplacian operator and the Paneitz operator.
We set up a general framework for Calderón projectors (and their generalization to non-compact manifolds), associated with complex Laplacians e.g. obtained by Wick rotation of a Lorentzian metric. In the analytic case, we use this to show that the Laplacian's Green's functions have analytic continuations whose boundary values are two-point functions of analytic Hadamard states. The result does not require the metric to be stationary. As an aside, we describe how thermal states are obtained as a special case of this construction if the coefficients are time-independent.
We use the mean value property in an asymptotic way to provide a notion of a pointwise Laplacian, called AMV Laplacian, that we study in several contexts including the Heisenberg group and weighted Lebesgue measures. We focus especially on a class of metric measure spaces including intersecting submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$, a context in which our notion brings new insights; the Kirchhoff law appears as a special case. In the general case, we also prove a maximum and comparison principle, as well as a Green-type identity for a related operator.
In this paper we study the gradient estimate for positive solutions of Schrodinger equations on locally finite graph. Then we derive Harnack's inequality for positive solutions of the Schrodinger equations. We also set up some results about Green functions of the Laplacian equation on locally finite graph. Interesting properties of Schrodinger equation are derived.
Solutions of the classical $ϕ^4$-theory in Minkowski space-time are analyzed in a perturbation expansion in the nonlinearity. Using the language of Feynman diagrams, the solution of the Cauchy problem is expressed in terms of tree diagrams which involve the retarded Green's function and have one outgoing leg. In order to obtain general tree diagrams, we set up a "classical measurement process" in which a virtual observer of a scattering experiment modifies the field and detects suitable energy differences. By adding a classical stochastic background field, we even obtain all loop diagrams. The…
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.
We study the spectral decomposition of the Laplacian on a family of fractals $\mathcal{VS}_n$ that includes the Vicsek set for $n=2$, extending earlier research on the Sierpinski Gasket. We implement an algorithm [24] for spectral decimation of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, and explicitly compute these eigenfunctions and some of their properties. We give an algorithm for computing inner products of eigenfunctions. We explicitly compute solutions to the heat equation and wave equation for Neumann boundary conditions. We study gaps in the ratios of eigenvalues and eigenvalue clusters. We give…
A nested family of growing or shrinking planar domains is called a Laplacian growth process if the normal velocity of each domain's boundary is proportional to the gradient of the domain's Green function with a fixed singularity on the interior. In this paper we review the Laplacian growth model and its key underlying assumptions, so that we may consider a generalization to so-called elliptic growth, wherein the Green function is replaced with that of a more general elliptic operator--this models, for example, inhomogeneities in the underlying plane. In this paper we continue the development o…
The $p$-Laplacian evolution equation in metric measure spaces has been studied as the gradient flow in $L^2$ of the $p$-Cheeger energy (for $1 < p < \infty$). In this paper, using the first-order differential structure on a metric measure space introduced by Gigli, we characterize the subdifferential in $L^2$ of the $p$-Cheeger energy. This gives rise to a new definition of the $p$-Laplacian operator in metric measure spaces, which allows us to work with this operator in more detail. In this way, we introduce a new notion of solutions to the $p$-Laplacian evolution equation in metric measure s…
We are concerned about the coarse and precise aspects of a priori estimates for Green's function of a regular domain for the Laplacian-Betrami operator on any $3\le n$-dimensional complete non-compact boundary-free Riemannian manifold through the square Sobolev/Nash/logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities plus the rough and sharp Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities. Consequently, we are led to evaluate the critical limit of an induced monotone Green's functional using the asymptotic behavior of the Lorentz norm deficit of Green's function at the infinity, as well as the harmonic radius of a regular …
In this paper, we consider the semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in the Euclidian space $\mathbb{R}^n$: \begin{equation} (-Δ)^{α/2} u(x) = f(x_n) \,u^p(x), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^n \label{n26} \end{equation} in the subcritical case with $1<p<\frac{n+α}{n-α}$. Instead of carrying out direct investigations on pseudo-differential equation (\ref{n26}), we first seek its equivalent form in an integral equation as below: \begin{equation} u(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}G_{\infty}(x,y)\,f(y_n)\, u^{p}(y)\,dy, \label{n27} \end{equation} where $ G_{\infty}(x,y)$ is the Green's function ass…
We construct an explicit Green's function for the conjugated Laplacian $e^{-ω\cdot x/h}Δe^{-ω\cdot x/h}$, which let us control our solutions on roughly half of the boundary. We apply the Green's function to solve a partial data inverse problem for the Schrödinger equation with potential $q \in L^{n/2}$. We also use this Green's function to derive $L^p$ Carleman estimates similar to the ones in Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge \cite{krs}, but for functions with support up to part of the boundary.
We investigate bubbling solutions for the nonlocal equation \[ A_Ω^s u =u^p,\ u >0 \quad \mbox{in } Ω, \] under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions, where $Ω$ is a bounded and smooth domain. The operator $A_Ω^s$ stands for two types of nonlocal operators that we treat in a unified way: either the spectral fractional Laplacian or the restricted fractional Laplacian. In both cases $s \in (0,1)$ and the Dirichlet conditions are different: for the spectral fractional Laplacian, we prescribe $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$ and for the restricted fractional Laplacian, we prescribe $u=0$ on $\mathbb R^n \setminus…
We analyze the $s$-dependence of solutions $u_s$ to the family of fractional Poisson problems $(-Δ)^s u =f$ in $Ω$, $u \equiv 0$ on $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus Ω$ in an open bounded set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $s \in (0,1)$. In the case where $Ω$ is of class $C^2$ and $f \in C^α(\barΩ)$ for some $α>0$, we show that the map $(0,1) \to L^\infty(Ω)$, $s\mapsto u_s$ is of class $C^1$, and we characterize the derivative $\partial_s u_s$ in terms of the logarithmic Laplacian of $f$. As a corollary, we derive pointwise monotonicity properties of the solution map $s \mapsto u_s$ under suitable assumptions…
We study the scaling limit of a divisible sandpile model associated to a truncated $α$-stable random walk. We prove that the limiting distribution is related to an obstacle problem for a truncated fractional Laplacian. We also provide, as a fundamental tool, precise asymptotic expansions for the corresponding rescaled discrete Green's functions. In particular, the convergence rate of these Green's functions to its continuous counterpart is derived.
We consider the linear stationary equation defined by the fractional Laplacian with drift. In the supercritical case, that is the case when the dominant term is given by the drift instead of the diffusion component, we prove local regularity of solutions in Sobolev spaces em- ploying tools from the theory of pseudo-differential operators. The regularity of solutions in the supercritical case is as expected in the subcritical case, when the diffusion is at least as strong as the drift component, and the operator defined by the fractional Laplacian with drift can be viewed as an elliptic operato…
The linear operator $c + (-Δ)^{α/2}$, where $c > 0$ and $(-Δ)^{α/2}$ is the fractional Laplacian on the periodic domain, arises in the existence of periodic travelling waves in the fractional Korteweg--de Vries equation. We establish a relation of the Green's function of this linear operator with the Mittag--Leffler function, which was previously used in the context of Riemann--Liouville's and Caputo's fractional derivatives. By using this relation, we prove that Green's function is strictly positive and single-lobe (monotonically decreasing away from the maximum point) for every $c > 0$ and e…
We study the heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian L on the CR sphere S2n+1. An explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the heat kernel is obtained. As a by-product we recover in a simple way the Green function of the conformal sub- Laplacian -L + n2 that was obtained by Geller [12], and also get an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance. The key point is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetries coming from the fibration S2n+1 \rightarrow CPn.
