Moduli spaces - finite-dimensional, collective coordinate manifolds - for kinks and antikinks in $ϕ^4$ theory and sine-Gordon theory are reconsidered. The field theory Lagrangian restricted to moduli space defines a reduced Lagrangian, combining a potential with a kinetic term that can be interpreted as a Riemannian metric on moduli space. Moduli spaces should be metrically complete, or have an infinite potential on their boundary. Examples are constructed for both kink-antikink and kink-antikink-kink configurations. The naive position coordinates of the kinks and antikinks sometimes need to be extended from real to imaginary values, although the field remains real. The previously discussed null-vector problem for the shape modes of $ϕ^4$ kinks is resolved by a better coordinate choice. In sine-Gordon theory, moduli spaces can be constructed using exact solutions at the critical energy separating scattering and breather (or wobble) solutions; here, energy conservation relates the metric and potential. The reduced dynamics on these moduli spaces accurately reproduces properties of the exact solutions over a range of energies.
The moduli space approximation to kink dynamics permits a relativistic generalization if the Derrick scaling parameter is used as a collective coordinate. We develop a perturbative approach to the resulting relativistic moduli space by expanding the Derrick scaling parameter about unity and treating the higher-order Derrick modes as new degrees of freedom. This approach allows us to resolve (coordinate) singularities order-by-order, and systematically incorporates relativistic corrections {\it perturbatively} in kink scattering. It gives an excellent description of kink-antikink collisions in …
A first order equation for a static $ϕ^4$ kink in the presence of an impurity is extended into an iterative scheme. At the first iteration, the solution is the standard kink, but at the second iteration the kink impurity generates a kink-antikink solution or a bump solution, depending on a constant of integration. The third iterate can be a kink-antikink-kink solution or a single kink modified by a variant of the kink's shape mode. All equations are first order ODEs, so the nth iterate has n moduli, and it is proposed that the moduli space could be used to model the dynamics of n kinks and ant…
We find a family of (half) self-dual impurity models such that the self-dual (BPS) sector is exactly solvable, for any spatial distribution of the impurity, both in the topologically trivial case and for kink (or antikink) configurations. This allows us to derive the metric on the corresponding one-dimensional moduli space in an analytical form. Also the generalized translational symmetry is found in an exact form. This symmetry provides a motion on moduli space which transforms one BPS solution into another. Finally, we analyse exactly how vibrational properties (spectral modes) of the BPS so…
In this paper quantum effects are investigated in a very special two-scalar field model having a moduli space of BPS topological defects. In a $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time the defects are classically degenerate in mass kinks, but in $(3+1)$ dimensions the kinks become BPS domain walls, all of them sharing the same surface tension at the classical level. The heat kernel/zeta function regularization method will be used to control the divergences induced by the quantum kink and domain wall fluctuations. A generalization of the Gilkey-DeWitt-Avramidi heat kernel expansion will be developed in or…
We use the moduli matrix approach to study the moduli space of 1/4 BPS kinks supported by vortices in the Higgs phase of N = 2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories when non-zero masses for the matter hypermultiplets are introduced. We focus on the case of degenerate masses. In these special cases vortices acquire new orientational degrees of freedom, and become "non-Abelian". Kinks acquire new degrees of freedom too, and we will refer to them as "non-Abelian". As already noticed for the Abelian case, non-Abelian kinks must correspond to non-Abelian monopoles of the unbroken phase of SU(N) Yang-M…
We show that constrained $CP^1$ instantons, combined with the Relativistic Moduli Space approach, can accurately describe kink-antikink collisions in the $ϕ^4$ model.
The cosmological moduli problem has been recently reconsidered. Papers [1,2] show that even heavy moduli (m_ϕ> 10^5 GeV) can be a problem for cosmology if a branching ratio of the modulus into gravitini is large. In this paper, we discuss the tachyonic decay of moduli into the Standard Model's degrees of freedom, e.g. Higgs particles, as a resolution to the moduli-induced gravitino problem. Rough estimates on model dependent parameters set a lower bound on the allowed moduli at around 10^8 ~ 10^9 GeV.
The dynamic process of unstable D-branes decaying into stable ones with one dimension lower can be described by a tachyon field with a Dirac-Born-Infeld effective action. In this paper we investigate the fluctuation modes of the tachyon field around a two-parameter family of static solutions representing an array of brane-antibrane pairs. Besides a pair of zero modes associated with the parameters of the solution, and instabilities associated with annihilation of the brane-antibrane pairs, we find states corresponding to excitations of the tachyon field around the brane and in the bulk. In the…
We find that for various solitonic processes the corresponding canonical moduli space can have a boundary which is accessible in a finite time evolution. We show that such a boundary is not a failure of the moduli space approach but has a physical meaning. In our example, it corresponds to the complete annihilation of a colliding kink and antikink after a finite time. We further find that, close to the boundary, the solutions have an approximate self-similar form.
The fractal velocity pattern in symmetric kink-antikink collisions in $ϕ^4$ theory is shown to emerge from a dynamical model with two effective moduli, the kink-antikink separation and the internal shape mode amplitude. The shape mode usefully approximates Lorentz contractions of the kink and antikink, and the previously problematic null-vector in the shape mode amplitude at zero separation is regularized.
In this paper we describe the moduli space of kinks in a class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields in (1+1) Minkowskian space-time. The main feature of the class is the spontaneous breaking of a discrete symmetry of (real) Ginzburg-Landau type that guarantees the existence of kink topological defects.
Massive maximally-supersymmetric sigma models are shown to exhibit multiple static kink-domain wall solutions that preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. The kink moduli space admits a natural Kahler metric. We examine in some detail the case when the target of the sigma model is given by the co-tangent bundle of CP^n equipped with the Calabi metric, and we show that there exist BPS solutions corresponding to n kinks at arbitrary separation. We also describe how 1/4-BPS charged and intersecting domain walls are described in the low-energy dynamics on the kink moduli space. We comment on the simila…
We study massive particle radiation from cosmic string kinks, and its observability in extremely high energy neutrinos. In particular, we consider the emission of moduli --- weakly coupled scalar particles predicted in supersymmetric theories --- from the kinks of cosmic string loops. Since kinks move at the speed of light on strings, moduli are emitted with large Lorentz factors, and eventually decay into many pions and neutrinos via hadronic cascades. The produced neutrino flux has energy $E \gtrsim 10^{11} \rm{GeV}$, and is affected by oscillations and absorption (resonant and non-resonant)…
N=2 SQED with several flavors admits multiple, static BPS domain wall solutions. We determine the explicit two-kink metric and examine the dynamics of colliding domain walls. The multi-kink metric has a toric Kahler structure and we reduce the Kahler potential to quadrature. In the second part of this paper, we consider semi-local vortices compactified on circle. We argue that, in the presence of a suitable Wilson line, the vortices separate into domain wall constituents. These play the role of fractional instantons in two-dimensional gauge theories and sigma-models.
We investigate vortices on a cylinder in supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. We identify moduli space of periodic vortices and find that a pair of wall-like objects appears as the vortex moduli is varied. Usual domain walls also can be obtained from the single vortex on the cylinder by introducing a twisted boundary condition. We can understand these phenomena as a T-duality among D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. Using this T-duality picture, we find a one-to-one correspondence between the moduli space of non-Ab…
The purpose of this paper is to describe a relationship between maximally supersymmetric domain walls and magnetic monopoles. We show that the moduli space of domain walls in non-abelian gauge theories with N flavors is isomorphic to a complex, middle dimensional, submanifold of the moduli space of U(N) magnetic monopoles. This submanifold is defined by the fixed point set of a circle action rotating the monopoles in the plane. To derive this result we present a D-brane construction of domain walls, yielding a description of their dynamics in terms of truncated Nahm equations. The physical exp…
We construct the soliton solutions in the symmetric space sine-Gordon theories. The latter are a series of integrable field theories in 1+1-dimensions which are associated to a symmetric space F/G, and are related via the Pohlmeyer reduction to theories of strings moving on symmetric spaces. We show that the solitons are kinks that carry an internal moduli space that can be identified with a particular co-adjoint orbit of the unbroken subgroup H of G. Classically the solitons come in a continuous spectrum which encompasses the perturbative fluctuations of the theory as the kink charge becomes …
