We consider multi-dimensional extensions of Maxwell's seminal rheo-logical equation for 1D viscoelastic flows. We aim at a causal model for compressible flows, defined by semi-group solutions given initial conditions , and such that perturbations propagates at finite speed. We propose a symmetric hyperbolic system of conservation laws that contains the Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) equation as causal model. The system is an extension of polyconvex elastodynamics, with an additional material metric variable that relaxes to model viscous effects. Interestingly, the framework could also cover other rheological equations, depending on the chosen relaxation limit for the material metric variable. We propose to apply the new system to incompressible free-surface gravity flows in the shallow-water regime, when causality is important. The system reduces to a viscoelastic extension of Saint-Venant 2D shallow-water system that is symmetric-hyperbolic and that encompasses our previous viscoelastic extensions of Saint-Venant proposed with F. Bouchut.
Unidirectional start-up flow of a viscoelastic fluid in a pipe with fractional Maxwell's model is studied. The flow starting from rest is driven by a constant pressure gradient in an infinite long straight pipe. By employing the method of variable separations and Heaviside operational calculus, we obtain the exact solution, from which the flow characteristics are investigated. It is found that the start-up motion of fractional Maxwell's fluid with parameters $α$ and $β$, tends to be at rest as time goes to infinity, except the case of $β=1$. This observation, which also can be predicted from t…
Maxwell's models for viscoelastic flows are famous for their potential to unify elastic motions of solids with viscous motions of liquids in the continuum mechanics perspective. But rigorous proofs are lacking. The present note is a contribution toward well-defined viscoelastic flows proved to encompass both solid and (liquid) fluid regimes. In a first part, we consider the structural stability of particular viscoelastic flows: 1D shear waves solutions to damped wave equations. We show the convergence toward purely elastic 1D shear waves solutions to standard wave equations, as the relaxation …
We propose in this work the first symmetric hyperbolic system of conservation laws to describe viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids, i.e. fluidswith memory that are characterized by one relaxation-time parameter. Precisely, the system of quasilinear PDEs is detailed for the shallow-water regime, i.e. for hydrostatic incompressible 2D flows with free surface under gravity. It generalizes Saint-Venant system to viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids, and encompasses previous works with F. Bouchut. It also generalizes the (thin-layer) elastodynamics of hyperelastic materials to viscous fluids, and …
We propose a system of conservation laws with relaxation source terms (i.e. balance laws) for non-isothermal viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids. The system is an extension of the polyconvex elastodynamics of hyperelastic bodies using additional structure variables. It is obtained by writing the Helmholtz free energy as the sum of a volumetric energy density (function of the determinant of the deformation gradient det F and the temperature $θ$ like the standard perfect-gas law or Noble-Abel stiffened-gas law) plus a polyconvex strain energy density function of F, $θ$ and of symmetric positive…
In this paper, we revise Maxwell's constitutive relation and formulate a system of first-order partial differential equations with two parameters for compressible viscoelastic fluid flows. The system is shown to possess a nice conservation-dissipation (relaxation) structure and therefore is symmetrizable hyperbolic. Moreover, for smooth flows we rigorously verify that the revised Maxwell's constitutive relations are compatible with Newton's law of viscosity.
In this work we present a generalised viscoelastic model using distributed-order derivatives. The model consists of two distributed-order elements (distributed springpots) connected in series, as in the Maxwell model. The new model generalises the fractional viscoelastic model presented in [H. Schiessel, A. Blumen, Hierarchical analogues to fractional relaxation equations, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General 26 (1993) 5057-50] and allows for a more broad and accurate description of complex fluids when a proper weighting function of the order of the derivatives is chosen. We discuss …
We show that weak solutions of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system preserve the total energy provided that the electromagnetic field is locally of bounded variation and, for any $λ$> 0, the one-particle distribution function has a square integrable $λ$-moment in the momentum variable.
A new, conserved, symmetric tensor field for a source-free Maxwell test field on a four-dimensional spacetime with a conformal Killing-Yano tensor, satisfying a certain compatibility condition, is introduced. In particular, this construction works for the Kerr spacetime.
The main purpose of this review is to summarize the recent advances of the Conservation-Dissipation Formalism (CDF), a new way for constructing both thermodynamically compatible and mathematically stable and well-posed models for irreversible processes. The contents include but are not restricted to the CDF's physical motivations, mathematical foundations, formulations of several classical models in mathematical physics from master equations and Fokker-Planck equations to Boltzmann equations and quasi-linear Maxwell equations, as well as novel applications in the fields of non-Fourier heat con…
In this paper, we study the problem of energy conservation for the solutions to the incompressible viscoelastic flows. First, we consider Leray-Hopf weak solutions in the bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d\,\, (d\geq 2)$. We prove that under the Shinbrot type conditions $ u \in L^{q}_{loc}\left(0, T ; L^{p}(Ω)\right) \text { for any } \frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{p} \leq \frac{1}{2}, \text { with } p \geq 4,\text{ and } {\bf F} \in L^{r}_{loc}\left(0, T ; L^{s}(Ω)\right) \text { for any } \frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{s} \leq \frac{1}{2}, \text { with } s \geq 4 $, the boundary conditions $u|_{\part…
We study the one-dimensional Riemann problem for a hyperbolic system of three conservation laws of Temple class. This systems it is a simplification of a recently propose system of five conservations laws by Bouchut and Boyaval that model viscoelastic fluids. An important issues is that the considered $3 \times 3$ system is such that every characteristic field is linearly degenerate. We show the Riemann problem for this system. Under suitable generalized Rankine-Hugoniot relation and entropy condition, both existence and uniqueness of particular delta-shock type solutions are established.
The usual Helmholtz decomposition gives a decomposition of any vector valued function into a sum of gradient of a scalar function and rotation of a vector valued function under some mild condition. In this paper we show that the vector valued function of the second term i.e. the divergence free part of this decomposition can be further decomposed into a sum of a vector valued function polarized in one component and the rotation of a vector valued function also polarized in the same component. Hence the divergence free part only depends on two scalar functions. Further we show the so called com…
Recently C. Bardos et al. presented in their fine paper \cite{Bardos} a proof of an Onsager type conjecture on renormalization property and the entropy conservation laws for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system. Particularly, authors proved that if the distribution function $u \in L^{\infty}(0,T;W^{α,p}(\mathbb{R}^6))$ and the electromagnetic field $E,B \in L^{\infty}(0,T;W^{β,q}(\mathbb{R}^3))$, with $α, β\in (0,1)$ such that $αβ+ β+ 3α- 1>0$ and $1/p+1/q\le 1$, then the renormalization property and entropy conservation laws hold. To determine a complete proof of this work, in the present p…
We establish the convergence to the equilibrium for various linear collisional kinetic equations (including linearized Boltzmann and Landau equations) with physical local conservation laws in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition. Our proof consists in establishing an hypocoercivity result for the associated operator, in other words, we exhibit a convenient Hilbert norm for which the associated operator is coercive in the orthogonal of the global conservation laws. Our approach allows us to treat general domains with all type of boundary conditions in a unified framework. In …
Well-posedness, magnetic helicity conservation, inviscid limit and asymptotic stability for the generalized Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations with the Hall effect
In this paper we give a proof of an Onsager type conjecture on conservation of energy and entropies of weak solutions to the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations. As concerns the regularity of weak solutions, say in Sobolev spaces $W^{α,p}$, we determine Onsager type exponents $α$ that guarantee the conservation of all entropies. In particular, the Onsager exponent $α$ is smaller than $α= 1/3$ established for fluid models. Entropies conservation is equivalent to the renormalization property, which have been introduced by DiPerna--Lions for studying well-posedness of passive transport equatio…
