We study the non-equilibrium steady states and first passage properties of a Brownian particle with position $X$ subject to an external confining potential of the form $V(X)=μ|X|$, and that is switched on and off stochastically. Applying the potential intermittently generates a physically realistic diffusion process with stochastic resetting toward the origin, a topic which has recently attracted a considerable interest in a variety of theoretical contexts but has remained challenging to implement in lab experiments. The present system exhibits rich features, not observed in previous resetting models. The mean time needed by a particle starting from the potential minimum to reach an absorbing target located at a certain distance can be minimized with respect to the switch-on and switch-off rates. The optimal rates undergo continuous or discontinuous transitions as the potential strength $μ$ is varied across non-trivial values. A discontinuous transition with metastable behavior is also observed for the optimal strength at fixed rates.
Stochastic processes that are randomly reset to an initial condition serve as a showcase to investigate non-equilibrium steady states. However, all existing results have been restricted to the special case of memoryless resetting protocols. Here, we obtain the general solution for the distribution of processes in which waiting times between reset events are drawn from an arbitrary distribution. This allows for the investigation of a broader class of much more realistic processes. As an example, our results are applied to the analysis of the efficiency of constrained random search processes.
Intermittent stochastic processes appear in a wide field, such as chemistry, biology, ecology, and computer science. This paper builds up the theory of intermittent continuous time random walk (CTRW) and Lévy walk, in which the particles are stochastically reset to a given position with a resetting rate $r$. The mean squared displacements of the CTRW and Lévy walks with stochastic resetting are calculated, uncovering that the stochastic resetting always makes the CTRW process localized and Lévy walk diffuse slower. The asymptotic behaviors of the probability density function of Lévy walk with …
During a random search, resetting the searcher's position from time to time to the starting point often reduces the mean completion time of the process. Although many different resetting models have been studied over the past ten years, only a few can be physically implemented. Here we study theoretically a protocol that can be realised experimentally and which exhibits unusual optimization properties. A Brownian particle is subject to an arbitrary confining potential $v(x)$ which is switched on and off intermittently at fixed rates. Motion is constrained between an absorbing wall located at t…
We study first-passage time problems for a diffusive particle with stochastic resetting with a finite rate $r$. The optimal search time is compared quantitatively with that of an effective equilibrium Langevin process with the same stationary distribution. It is shown that the intermittent, nonequilibrium strategy with non-vanishing resetting rate is more efficient than the equilibrium dynamics. Our results are extended to multiparticle systems where a team of independent searchers, initially uniformly distributed with a given density, looks for a single immobile target. Both the average and t…
We study the effects of an intermittent harmonic potential of strength $μ= μ_0 ν$ -- that switches on and off stochastically at a constant rate $γ$, on an overdamped Brownian particle with damping coefficient $ν$. This can be thought of as a realistic model for realisation of stochastic resetting. We show that this dynamics admits a stationary solution in all parameter regimes and compute the full time dependent variance for the position distribution and find the characteristic relaxation time. We find the exact non-equilibrium stationary state distributions in the limits -- (i) $γ\llμ_0 $ whi…
We investigate an intermittent stochastic process, in which the diffusive motion with time-dependent diffusion coefficient $D(t)\sim t^{α-1}$, $α>0$ (scaled Brownian motion), is stochastically reset to its initial position and starts anew. The resetting follows a renewal process with either exponential or power-law distribution of the waiting times between successive renewals. The resetting events, however, do not affect the time dependence of the diffusion coefficient, so that the whole process appears to be a non-renewal one. We discuss the mean squared displacement of a particle and probabi…
A dynamical process that takes a random time to complete, e.g., a chemical reaction, may either be accelerated or hindered due to resetting. Tuning system parameters such as temperature, viscosity or concentration, can invert the effect of resetting on the mean completion time of the process, which leads to a resetting transition. Though the resetting transition was recently studied for diffusion in a handful of model potentials, it is yet unknown whether the results follow any universality in terms of well-defined physical parameters. To bridge this gap, we propose a general framework which r…
Diffusion and first passage in the presence of stochastic resetting and potential bias have been of recent interest. We study a few models, systematically progressing in their complexity, to understand the usefulness of resetting. In the parameter space of the models, there are multiple continuous and discontinuous transitions where the advantage of resetting vanishes. We show these results analytically exactly for a tent-potential, and numerically accurately for a quartic-potential relevant to a magnetic system at low temperatures. We find that the spatial asymmetry of the potential across th…
Resetting or restart, when applied to a stochastic process, usually brings its dynamics to a time-independent stationary state. In turn, the optimal resetting rate makes the mean time to reach a target to be the shortest one. These and other intriguing problems have been intensively studied in the case of ordinary diffusive processes over the last decade. In this paper we consider the influence of stochastic resetting on a diffusive motion modeled in terms of the non-linear differential equation. The reason for its non-linearity is the power-law dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the p…
We consider the paradigm of an overdamped Brownian particle in a potential well, which is modulated through an external protocol, in the presence of stochastic resetting. Thus, in addition to the short range diffusive motion, the particle also experiences intermittent long jumps which reset the particle back at a preferred location. Due to the modulation of the trap, work is done on the system and we investigate the statistical properties of the work fluctuations. We find that the distribution function of the work typically, in asymptotic times, converges to a universal Gaussian form for any p…
We consider motion of an overdamped Brownian particle subject to stochastic resetting in one dimension. In contrast to the usual setting where the particle is instantaneously reset to a preferred location (say, the origin), here we consider a finite time resetting process facilitated by an external linear potential $V(x)=λ|x|~ (λ>0)$. When resetting occurs, the trap is switched on and the particle experiences a force $-\partial_x V(x)$ which helps the particle to return to the resetting location. The trap is switched off as soon as the particle makes a first passage to the origin. Subsequently…
We explore the effect of stochastic resetting on the first-passage properties of space-dependent diffusion in presence of a constant bias. In our analytically tractable model system, a particle diffusing in a linear potential $U(x)\proptoμ|x|$ with a spatially varying diffusion coefficient $D(x)=D_0|x|$ undergoes stochastic resetting, i.e., returns to its initial position $x_0$ at random intervals of time, with a constant rate $r$. Considering an absorbing boundary placed at $x_a<x_0$, we first derive an exact expression of the survival probability of the diffusing particle in the Laplace spac…

The theory of stochastic resetting asserts that restarting a search process at certain times may accelerate the finding of a target. In the case of a classical diffusing particle trapped in a potential well, stochastic resetting may decrease the escape times due to thermal fluctuations. Here, we numerically explore the Kramers problem for a cubic potential, which is the simplest potential with a escape. Both deterministic and Poisson resetting times are analyzed. We use a Monte Carlo approach, which is necessary for generic complex potentials, and we show that the optimal rate is related to th…
The steady state of a Brownian particle diffusing in an arbitrary potential under the stochastic resetting mechanism has been studied. We show that there are different classes of nonequilibrium steady states depending on the nature of the potential. In the stable potential landscape, the system attains a well defined steady state however existence of the steady state for the unstable landscape is constrained. We have also investigated the transient properties of the propagator towards the steady state under the stochastic resetting mechanism. Finally, we have done numerical simulations to veri…
We study the diffusive motion of a test particle in a two-dimensional comb structure consisting of a main backbone channel with continuously distributed side branches, in the presence of stochastic Markovian resetting to the initial position of the particle. We assume that the motion along the infinitely long branches is biased by a confining potential. The crossover to the steady state is quantified in terms of a large deviation function, which is derived for the first time for comb structures in present paper. We show that the relaxation region is demarcated by a nonlinear "light-cone" beyon…
We study the statistics of the first-passage time of a single run and tumble particle (RTP) in one spatial dimension, with or without resetting, to a fixed target located at $L>0$. First, we compute the first-passage time distribution of a free RTP, without resetting nor in a confining potential, but averaged over the initial position drawn from an arbitrary distribution $p(x)$. Recent experiments used a non-instantaneous resetting protocol that motivated us to study in particular the case where $p(x)$ corresponds to the stationary non-Boltzmann distribution of an RTP in the presence of a harm…
Diffusion with stochastic resetting has recently emerged as a powerful modeling tool with a myriad of potential applications. Here, we study local time in this model, covering situations of free and biased diffusion with, and without, the presence of an absorbing boundary. Given a Brownian trajectory that evolved for $t$ units of time, the local time is simply defined as the total time the trajectory spent in a small vicinity of its initial position. However, as Brownian trajectories are stochastic --- the local time itself is a random variable which fluctuates round and about its mean value. …
Recent studies in one dimension have revealed that the temporal advantage rendered by stochastic resetting to diffusing particles in attaining first passage, may be annulled by a sufficiently strong attractive potential. We extend the results to higher dimensions. For a diffusing particle in an attractive potential $V({R})=k {R}^n$, in general $d$ dimensions, we study the critical strength $k = k_c$ above which resetting becomes disadvantageous. The point of continuous transition may be exactly found even in cases where the problem with resetting is not solvable, provided the first two moments…
We study the effect of resetting on diffusion in a logarithmic potential. In this model, a particle diffusing in a potential $U(x) = U_0\log|x|$ is reset, i.e., taken back to its initial position, with a constant rate $r$. We show that this analytically tractable model system exhibits a series of phase transitions as a function of a single parameter, $βU_0$, the ratio of the strength of the potential to the thermal energy. For $βU_0<-1$ the potential is strongly repulsive, preventing the particle from reaching the origin. Resetting then generates a non-equilibrium steady state which is charact…
A positive rate of entropy production at steady state is a distinctive feature of truly non-equilibrium processes. Exact results, while being often limited to simple models, offer a unique opportunity to explore the thermodynamic features of these processes in full details. Here we derive analytical results for the steady-state rate of entropy production in single particle systems driven away from equilibrium by the fluctuations of an external potential of arbitrary shapes. Subsequently, we provide exact results for a diffusive particle in a harmonic trap whose potential stiffness varies in ti…
We study the dynamics of overdamped Brownian particles diffusing in conservative force fields and undergoing stochastic resetting to a given location with a generic space-dependent rate of resetting. We present a systematic approach involving path integrals and elements of renewal theory that allows to derive analytical expressions for a variety of statistics of the dynamics such as (i) the propagator prior to first reset; (ii) the distribution of the first-reset time, and (iii) the spatial distribution of the particle at long times. We apply our approach to several representative and hitherto…
In the past few years, stochastic resetting has become a subject of immense interest. Most of the theoretical studies so far focused on instantaneous resetting which is, however, a major impediment to practical realization or experimental verification in the field. This is because in the real world, taking a particle from one place to another requires finite time and thus a generalization of the existing theory to incorporate non-instantaneous resetting is very much in need. In this paper, we propose a method of resetting which involves non-instantaneous returns facilitated by an external conf…
