We propose a string theory construction which allows us to study properties of the potential of two heavy quarks coupled to a light quark. In such a case, the potential is a function of separation between the heavy quarks. The results show the universality of the string tension and factorization at small separations expected from heavy quark-diquark symmetry. In addition, we make an estimate of the string breaking distance. With the parameter values we use, this distance is found to be almost the same as that for the heavy quark-antiquark potential. We also discuss the heavy quark-quark potential and its relation to Lipkin rule.
For the case of two light flavors we propose the stringy description of the system consisting of two heavy and three light quarks, with the aim of exploring the quark organization inside the system and its low-lying Born-Oppenheimer potentials as a function of the heavy quark separation. Our analysis reveals several critical separations related to the processes of string reconnection, breaking and junction annihilation. We find that a compact pentaquark configuration makes the dominant contribution to the potential of the first excited state at small separations, and for separations larger tha…
The role of $q\bar q$ components in the nucleon and the N(1440) resonance is studied by explicit coupling of the lowest positive parity $qqqq\bar q$ state to the $qqq$ components in the harmonic oscillator quark model. The lowest energy $qqqq\bar q$ component, where the 4-quark subsystem has the flavor-spin symmetry $[4]_{FS}[22]_F[22]_S$, is close in energy to the lowest positive parity excitation of the nucleon in the $qqq$ quark model. The confining interaction leads to a strong mixing of the $qqqq\bar q$ system and the positive parity excited state of the $qqq$ system. This result is in li…
Using the gauge/gravity duality, we investigate the string breaking and dissolution of two heavy quarks coupled to a light quark at finite temperature. It is found that there exist three configurations of QQq with the increase of separate distance for heavy quarks in the confined phase. Besides, the string breaking occurs at the distance $L_{\rm{QQq}} = 1.27 \rm{fm}$($T = 0.1 \rm{GeV}$) for the decay mode $\rm{Q Q q \rightarrow Q q q+Q \bar{q}}$. In the deconfined phase, QQq will melt at a certain distance then becomes free quarks. At last, we compare the potential of QQq with that of $\rm{Q\b…
Field distributions generated by static quark-antiquark and QQQ sources are calculated analytically in the framework of Gaussian (bilocal) approximation of Field Correlator Method (FCM). Special attention is paid to the QQQ system and asymmetric configurations are also studied. In both quark-antiquark and QQQ cases the string consists mainly of longitudinal color electric field. Transverse color electric field contribution is shown to be less then 3%. Baryon string has an Y-like shape with a deep well at the string junction position. Field distributions for quark-diquark and for three quarks o…
We study the properties of the colour triplet qqqbar quark cluster when flavour symmetry is broken. The relevance of such a cluster for some models of pentaquarks is then examined in the light of recent experimental signals.
We propose a new type of structure for singly heavy baryons of $Qqq\bar{q}q$ in addition to the conventional one of $Qqq$. Based on chiral symmetry of the light quarks, we show that the $Qqq\bar{q}q$ baryon offers a novel picture for heavy quark spin-singlet and flavor-antisymmetric baryons. By making use of the effective Lagrangian approach, we find $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2967)$ are mostly $Qqq\bar{q}q$ while $Λ_c(2286)$ and $Ξ_c(2470)$ are mostly $Qqq$. The masses of negative-parity baryons are predicted. We also derive a sum rule and the extended Goldberger-Treiman relation that the masses of…
Group theoretic method for the systematic study of five-quark states with meson-baryon ($q\bar{q}-q^3$) configuration is developed. The calculation of matrix elements of many body Hamiltonian is simplified by transforming the physical bases (meson-baryon quark cluster bases) to symmetry bases (group chain classified bases), where the fractional parentage expansion method can be used. Three quark models, the naive Glashow-Isgur model, Salamanca chiral quark model and quark delocalization color screening model, are used to show the general applicability of the method and general results of const…
We propose a string theory construction for the system of two heavy quarks and two light antiquarks. The potential of the system is a function of separation between the quarks. We define a critical separation distance below which the system can be thought of mainly as a compact tetraquark. The results show the universality of the string tension and factorization at small separations expected from heavy quark-diquark symmetry. Our estimate of the screening length is in the range of lattice QCD. We also make a comparison with the potential of the $QQq$ system. The potentials look very similar at…
The bound state of constituent quarks forming a $Qqq$ composite baryon is investigated in a QCD-inspired effective light-front model. The light-front Faddeev equations are derived and solved numerically. The masses of the spin 1/2 low-lying states of the nucleon, $Λ^0$, $Λ^+_c$ and $Λ^0_b$ are found and compared to the experimental data. The data is qualitatively described with a flavor independent effective interaction.
With the discovery of some hidden-charm pentaquark resonances by the LHCb Collaboration, investigations of pentaquark states containing heavy quarks have aroused the interest of theorists. We study herein $qqq\bar{q}Q$ ($q = u$ or $d$, $Q=c$ or $b$) pentaquark system, in the framework of the chiral quark model. In consequence, some charmed and bottomed pentaquarks are considered to exist by five-body dynamical calculations. In the charm sector, $Σ_cπ(IJ^P=0\frac{1}{2}^-)$ and $Σ_c^*π(IJ^P=0\frac{3}{2}^-)$ are possible candidates of $Λ_c(2595)$ and $Λ_c(2625)$, respectively. Besides, two high-s…

A qqq BSE formalism based on DBχS of an input 4-fermion Lagrangian of `current' u,d quarks interacting pairwise via gluon-exchange-propagator in its {\it non-perturbative} regime, is employed for the calculation of baryon self-energy via quark-loop integrals. To that end the baryon-qqq vertex function is derived under Covariant Instantaneity Ansatz (CIA), using Green's function techniques. This is a 3-body extension of an earlier q{\bar q} (2-body) result on the exact 3D-4D interconnection for the respective BS wave functions under 3D kernel support, precalibrated to both q{\bar q} and qqq spe…
We calculate color electric fields of quark/antiquark ($\bar{q}q$) and 3 quark ($qqq$) systems within the chromodielectric model (CDM). We explicitly evaluate the string tension of flux tubes in the $\bar{q}q$--system and analyze their profile. To reproduce results of lattice calculations we use a bag pressure $B = (320 MeV)^4$ from which an effective strong coupling constant $α_s \approx 0.3$ follows. With these parameters we get a $Y$ shaped configuration for large $qqq$--systems.
The analytic structure of the $qqq$ wave function, obtained recently in the high momentum regime of QCD, is employed for the formulation of baryonic transition amplitudes via quark loops. A new aspect of this study is the role of a direct ($Y$-shaped, Mercedes-Benz type) $qqq$ force in generating the $qqq$ wave function. The dynamics is that of a Salpeter-like equation (3D support for the kernel) formulated covariantly on the light front, a la Markov-Yukawa Transversality Principle (MYTP) which warrants a 2-way interconnection between the 3D and 4D Bethe-Salpeter (BSE) forms for 2 as well as 3…
We study the effects of the | qqq q\bar{q} > component of the hadronic wave function on the description of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. Starting with a qqq baryonic wave function which describes the baryonic and mesonic low energy spectrum, the extra q\bar{q} pair is generated through a relativistic version of the 3P_0 model. It is shown that this model leads to a renormalization of the quark mass that allows one to construct a conserved electromagnetic current. We conclude that these dynamical relativistic corrections play an important role in reproducing the Q2 dependence of…
In this work, we carry out the study of heavy flavor pentatuarks with four heavy quarks, which have typical $QQQQ\bar q$ configuration. Within the Chromomagnetic Interaction model, the mass spectrum of these discussed $QQQQ\bar q$ pentaquarks is given. In addition to the mass spectrum analysis, we also illustrate their two-body strong decay behavior by estimating some ratios of decay channels. By these effort, we suggest that future experiment should pay attention to this kind of pentaquark.
We study the heavy-heavy-light quark ($QQq$) system in a non-relativistic potential model, and investigate the quark motional effect on the inter-two-quark potential in baryons. We adopt the Hamiltonian with the static three-quark potential which is obtained by the first-principle calculation of lattice QCD, rather than the two-body force in ordinary quark models. Using the renormalization-group inspired variational method in discretized space, we calculate the ground-state energy of $QQq$ systems and the light-quark spatial distribution. We find that the effective string tension between the t…
Field distributions generated by static quark-antiquark and QQQ sources are calculated analytically in the framework of the Field Correlator Method (FCM) using Gaussian (bilocal) correlator. In both cases the string consists mostly of longitudinal color electric field, while transverse electric field contributes locally less then 3%, in agreement with earlier lattice studies. In the QQQ case the profile of the Y shape was calculated for the first time and found to have a complicated structure with a deep well at the string junction position. Possible consequences of this form for the baryon st…
After a brief historical background on the $\Ls$, we revisit the 25 year old controversy on whether $\Ls$ is a $qqq$ (L=1) three quark state or a $\K$ quasi virtual bound state. This work is stimulated by the recent suggestion of Isgur that s be treated as a heavy quark in heavy quark effective theory HQET. We re-examine the empirical evidence for minimal mixing amongst singlets and octets in negative parity baryon states, with a possible dynamical origin in the opening of inelastic threshold channels. Finally, we suggest that $\Ls$ belongs to a class of hadrons which are described simultaneou…
We study hidden-flavor pentaquarks, $Q\bar Q qqq$, based on a constituent quark-model with a standard quark-quark interaction that reproduces the low-energy meson and baryon spectra. We make use of dynamical correlations between the heavy quarks arising from the Coulomb-like nature of the short-range interaction. A detailed comparison is made with other results in the literature and with experimental data. Our results show a different pattern for open-flavor and hidden-flavor pentaquarks, as suggested by the data. Further implications about the existence of quarkonia bound to nuclei are discus…
The heavy quarks $c$ and $b$ stabilize exotic meson $(qq\bar q \bar q)$ and baryon $(qqqq \bar q)$ states. We discuss work with M. Karliner on molecules containing $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$; the first doubly charmed baryon; isospin splittings; $Ξ_{cc}^+ = ccd$ and $Ω_{cc} = ccs$ masses; lifetimes; tetraquarks stable under strong and electromagnetic decay; excited $Ω_{c}$ states; and P-wave excitation energies.
In the heavy quark limit of Coulomb gauge QCD and by truncating the Yang-Mills sector to include only dressed two-point functions, an analytic nonperturbative solution to the Faddeev equation for three-quark bound states in the case of equal quark separations is presented. A direct connection between the temporal gluon propagator and the three-quark confinement potential is provided and it is shown that only color singlet qqq (baryon) states are physically allowed.
A qqq BSE formalism based on an input 4-fermion Lagrangian of `current' u,d quarks, is employed for the construction of a relativistic qqq-wave function) via the BSE. Chiral invariance is ensured by the vector character of the gluonic propagator in the infrared regime, while the `constituent' masses are the low momentum limits of the dynamicalmass function generated by standard DBχ. The Covariant Instantaneity Ansatz (CIA) gives an exact 3D reduction of the BSE for baryon spectroscopy, while the reconstructed 4D form identifies the baryon quark vertex function reconstructed through a reversal …
We compute the chromopolarizabilities of the fully heavy baryons $Ω_{QQQ'}$ ($Q,Q'=b,c$) in the framework of potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. At leading order, the fully heavy hadrons are considered as ground chromo-Coulombic bound states. We find that the chromopolarizability $β_Ω$ of a fully heavy baryon $QQQ$ is 2.6 times the chromopolarizability $β_ψ$ of the quarkonium $\bar{Q}Q$ with the same heavy quark flavor $Q$. This result is accurate up to the correction of the order 0.3 for $Q=b$ and provides an order-of-magnitude estimate for $Q=c$. We discuss the dependence of th…
By comparing SU(3)-breaking scales of linear mass formulae, it is shown that the lowest vector and scalar mesons all have a $\bar{q}q$ configuration, while the ground-state octet and decuplet baryons are $qqq$. Also, the quark-level linear $σ$ model is employed to predict similar $\bar{q}q$ and $qqq$ states. Furthermore, the approximate mass degeneracy of the scalar $a_0$(985) and $f_0$(980) mesons is demonstrated to be accidental. Finally, it is shown that various strong, electromagnetic, and weak mesonic decay rates are successfully explained within the framework of the quark-level linear $σ…
$QQ^\prime qq\bar q$ pentaquarks are studied in a potential model, under the hypothesis that they are composite objects of two diquarks and one antiquark. The interaction between two colored objects includes two contributions, one based on the $q\bar q$ potential in QCD, computed in the gauge/string duality approach, and another describing the spin-spin interaction. The model has been extended to investigate pentaquarks with different quark content, as $Qqqq\bar q$ and $Qqqq\bar Q$, the latter including the states observed by LHCb, $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$, later updated, with a new dat…
The KN and KbarN low-energy elastic scattering is consistently studied in the framework of the QCD-inspired quark potential model. The model is composed of the t-channel one-gluon exchange potential, the s-channel one-gluon exchange potential and the harmonic oscillator confinement potential. By means of the resonating group method, nonlocal effective interaction potentials for the KN and KbarN systems are derived and used to calculate the KN and KbarN elastic scattering phase shifts. By considering the effect of QCD renormalization, the contribution of the color octet of the clusters (qqbar) …
Making use of the gauge/string duality, it is possible to study some aspects of the string breaking phenomenon in the three quark system. Our results point out that the string breaking distance is not universal and depends on quark geometry. The estimates of the ratio of the string breaking distance in the three quark system to that in the quark-antiquark system would range approximately from $\frac{2}{3}$ to $1$. In addition, it is shown that there are special geometries which allow more than one breaking distance.
Inspired by the observed $X(2900)$, we study systematically the mass spectra of the ground pentaquark states with the $qqqq\bar{Q}$ ($Q=c,b$; $q=n,s$; $n=u,d$) configuration in the framework of the Chromomagnetic Interaction model. We present a detailed analysis of their stabilities and decay behaviors. Our results indicate that there may exist narrow states or even stable states. We hope that the present study may inspire experimentalist's interest in searching for such a type of the exotic pentaquark state.
The quark sector of Coulomb gauge quantum chromodynamics is considered within the functional integral approach. The quark contributions to the Dyson-Schwinger equations are derived and one-loop perturbative results for the two-point functions are presented. The problem of confinement is addressed in the heavy quark limit, by rewriting the generating functional of quantum chromodynamics in terms of a heavy quark mass expansion. By restricting to leading order in this expansion and considering only the two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector, the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and …
Heavy quark transport coefficients in a strongly coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma can be evaluated using a gauge/string duality and lattice QCD. Via this duality, one can argue that for low momenta the drag coefficient for heavy quarks is proportional to the spatial string tension. Such a tension is well studied on the lattice that allows one to straightforwardly make non-perturbative estimates of the heavy quark diffusion coefficients near the critical point. The obtained results are consistent with those in the literature.
We use gauge/string duality to model a heavy quark-antiquark pair in a color singlet moving through a thermal plasma. In particular, we explore the effect of velocity on the string tension and Debye screening mass. Then we apply the results to the analysis of heavy quarkonium bound states. With some assumptions, we estimate the characteristic size of quarkonium and its dissociation temperature.
I review some selected aspects of the phenomenology of multiquark states discovered in high energy experiments. They have four valence quarks (called tetraquarks) and two of them are found to have five valence quarks (called pentaquarks), extending the conventional hadron spectrum which consists of quark-antiquark $(q\bar{q})$ mesons and $qqq$ baryons. Multiquark states represent a new facet of QCD and their dynamics is both challenging and currently poorly understood. I discuss various approaches put forward to accommodate them, with emphasis on the diquark model.
We use gauge-string duality to model the $N$-quark potential in pure Yang-Mills theories. For $SU(3)$, the result agrees remarkably well with lattice simulations. The model smoothly interpolates between almost the $Δ$-law at small distances and the Y-law at large distances.
This thesis presents an investigation of meson and baryon properties in the framework of covariant bound-state equations based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. Pion and rho-meson, diquark, nucleon and delta-baryon masses are obtained as self-consistent solutions of the respective equations for $q\bar{q}$, $qq$, $qqq$ and $q(qq)$ systems. The common parenthesis is given by a rainbow-ladder truncation in the quark-(anti-)quark channel. It includes an effective quark-gluon coupling as the only phenomenological input and inherent link in the calculation of meson and baryon observables. Res…
We study the heavy quark spin (HQS) multiplet structure of P-wave $Q\bar{Q}qqq$-type pentaquarks treated as molecules of a heavy meson and a heavy baryon. We define the light-cloud spin (LCS) basis decomposing the meson-baryon spin wavefunction into the LCS and HQS parts. Introducing the LCS basis, we find HQS multiplets classified by the LCS; five HQS singlets, two HQS doublets, and three HQS triplets. We construct the one-pion exchange potential respecting the heavy quark spin and chiral symmetries to demonstrate which HQS multiplets are realized as a bound state. By solving the coupled chan…
We construct a consistent action for a massive spinning quark on the end of a QCD string that leads to pure Thomas precession of the quark's spin. The string action is modified by the addition of Grassmann degrees of freedom to the string such that the equations of motion for the quark spin follow from boundary conditions, just as do those for the quark's position.
We use a symmetry-preserving truncation of meson and baryon bound-state equations in quantum field theory in order to develop a unified description of systems constituted from light- and heavy-quarks. In particular, we compute the spectrum and leptonic decay constants of ground-state pseudoscalar- and vector-mesons: $q^\prime \bar q$, $Q^\prime \bar Q$, with $q^\prime,q=u,d,s$ and $Q^\prime,Q = c,b$; and the masses of $J^P=3/2^+$ baryons and their first positive-parity excitations, including those containing one or more heavy quarks. This Poincaré-covariant analysis predicts that such baryons …
We perform the first studies of various inter-quark potentials in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD. From the accurate lattice calculation for more than 300 different patterns of three-quark (3Q) systems, we find that the static 3Q potential $V_{\rm 3Q}$ is well described by Y-Ansatz, i.e., the Coulomb plus Y-type linear potential. Quark confinement mechanism in baryons is also investigated in maximally-Abelian projected QCD. We next study the multi-quark potentials $V_{n{\rm Q}}$ ($n$=4,5) in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD, and find that they are well described by the one-gluon-exchange Coulomb plus m…
We have analyzed the theory of the baryon magnetic moments in the approximate) QCD setting suggested by Brambilla et al. By modifying their derivation of the $qqq$ interaction and wave equation for baryons, we derived expressions for the baryon moments in terms of the underlying quark moments, including the first corrections associated with the binding of the quarks in baryons. The results, which hold in the ``quenched approximation'' in which the contributions of virtual quark pairs are neglected, fail to describe the measured moments, with typical errors on the order of 7%. We conclude from …
Starting from the semirelativistic Hamiltonian for a doubly heavy baryon system ($QQq$) with Coulomb and linear confining scalar potentials, and operating the naive Foldy-Wouthuysen-Tani transformation on two heavy quarks, I construct a formulation how to calculate mass spectra and wave functions of doubly heavy baryons. Based on our formulation, their masses and wave functions are expanded in $1/m_Q$ with a heavy quark mass $m_Q$ and the $λ$ mode lowest-order equation is examined carefully to obtain a complete set of eigenfunctions. I claim that the $ρ$ mode wave function should be given by o…
