A permutation group $G$ on $Ω$ is called a rank 3 group if it has precisely three orbits in its induced action on $Ω\times Ω$. The largest permutation group on $Ω$ having the same orbits as $G$ on $Ω\times Ω$ is called the 2-closure of $G$. A description of 2-closures of rank 3 groups is given. As a special case, it is proved that 2-closure of a primitive one-dimensional affine rank 3 permutation group of sufficiently large degree is also affine and one-dimensional.
A finite permutation group $G$ on $Ω$ is called a rank 3 group if it has precisely three orbits in its induced action on $Ω\times Ω$. The largest permutation group on $Ω$ having the same orbits as $G$ on $Ω\times Ω$ is called the 2-closure of $G$. We construct a polynomial-time algorithm which given generators of a rank 3 group computes generators of its 2-closure.
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$, and $k$ a positive integer. The $k$-closure $G^{(k)}$ of $G$ is the largest subgroup of $\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$, with the same as $G$ orbits of componentwise action on $Ω^k$. We prove that the $k$-closure of a finite nilpotent permutation group is the direct product of $k$-closures of its Sylow subgroups.
Despite the significance of the notion of parabolic closures in Coxeter groups of finite ranks, the parabolic closure is not guaranteed to exist as a parabolic subgroup in a general case. In this paper, first we give a concrete example to clarify that the parabolic closure of even an irreducible reflection subgroup of countable rank does not necessarily exist as a parabolic subgroup. Then we propose a generalized notion of "locally parabolic closure" by introducing a notion of "locally parabolic subgroups", which involves parabolic ones as a special case, and prove that the locally parabolic c…
We introduce the notion of semigroup with a tight ideal series and investigate their closures in semitopological semigroups, particularly inverse semigroups with continuous inversion. As a corollary we show that the symmetric inverse semigroup of finite transformations $\mathscr{I}_λ^n$ of the rank $\leqslant n$ is algebraically closed in the class of (semi)topological inverse semigroups with continuous inversion. We also derive related results about the nonexistence of (partial) compactifications of classes of semigroups that we consider.
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a finite set $Ω$. The $k$-closure $G^{(k)}$ of the group $G$ is the largest subgroup of $\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ having the same orbits as $G$ on the $k$-th Cartesian power $Ω^k$ of $Ω$. A group $G$ is called $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive if its transitive and the orbits of a point stabilizer $G_α$ on the set $Ω\setminus\{α\}$ are of the same size greater than one. We prove that the $2$-closure $G^{(2)}$ of a $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation group $G$ can be found in polynomial time in size of $Ω$. In addition, if the group $G$ is not $2$-transitive, then for ev…
We prove the pro-supersolvable closure of a finitely generated subgroup of the free group is finitely generated. It extends similar results for pro-$p$ closures proved by Ribes-Zalesskii and pro-Nilpotent closures proved by Margolis-Sapir-Weil.
Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $Ω$ be a finite set. The $m$-closure of $G\leq\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ is the largest permutation group on $Ω$ having the same orbits as $G$ in its induced action on the Cartesian product $Ω^m$. The $1$-closure and $2$-closure of a solvable permutation group need not be solvable. We prove that the $m$-closure of a solvable permutation group is always solvable for $m\geq3$.
We study algebraic closure and its relation with definable closure in free groups and more generally in torsion-free hyperbolic groups. Given a torsion-free hyperbolic group G and a nonabelian subgroup A of G, we describe G as a constructible group from the algebraic closure of A along cyclic subgroups. In particular, it follows that the algebraic closure of A is finitely generated, quasiconvex and hyperbolic. Suppose that G is free. Then the definable closure of A is a free factor of the algebraic closure of A and the rank of these groups is bounded by that of G. We prove that the algebraic c…
The $2$-closure $\overline{G}$ of a permutation group $G$ on $Ω$ is defined to be the largest permutation group on $Ω$, having the same orbits on $Ω\timesΩ$ as $G$. It is proved that if $G$ is supersolvable, then $\overline{G}$ can be found in polynomial time in $|Ω|$. As a byproduct of our technique, it is shown that the composition factors of $\overline{G}$ are cyclic or alternating of prime degree.
It is shown that a group defined by forbidding all patterns of size s+1 that do not appear in a given self-similar group of tree automorphisms is the topological closure of a self-similar, countable, regular branch group, branching over its level s stabilizer. As an application, it is shown that there are no infinite, finitely constrained, topologically finitely generated groups of binary tree automorphisms defined by forbidden patterns of size two.
Here we show that a finite nilpotent group is 2-closed if and only if it is either cyclic or a direct product of a generalized quaternion group with a cyclic group of odd order.
We describe constraints that need to be satisfied ``near the top'' of the portraits of the elements in Grigorchuk group. These constraints, if satisfied by the portraits of all sections of some binary tree automorphism, guarantee that this automotphism belongs to the closure of Grigorchuk group in the pro-finite group of binary tree automorphisms. The constraints may be viewed as an effective version of a more conceptual description given earlier by Grigorchuk.
For any odd prime $p$, we give an example of a locally finite $p$-group $G$ containing a left 3-Engel element $x$ where $\langle x \rangle^G$ is not nilpotent.
To date almost all verifications of Oliver's p-group conjecture have proceeded by verifying a stronger conjecture about weakly closed quadratic subgroups. We construct a group of order 3^n for n = 49 which refutes the weakly closed conjecture but satisfies Oliver's conjecture.
The residual closure of a subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is the intersection of all virtually normal subgroups of $G$ containing $H$. We show that if $G$ is generated by finitely many cosets of $H$ and if $H$ is commensurated, then the residual closure of $H$ in $G$ is virtually normal. This implies that separable commensurated subgroups of finitely generated groups are virtually normal. A stream of applications to separable subgroups, polycyclic groups, residually finite groups, groups acting on trees, lattices in products of trees and just-infinite groups then flows from this main result.
Let $F$ be a finitely generated free group. We present an algorithm such that, given a subgroup $H\leqslant F$, decides whether $H$ is the fixed subgroup of some family of automorphisms, or family of endomorphisms of $F$ and, in the affirmative case, finds such a family. The algorithm combines both combinatorial and geometric methods.
Recently, Cochran and Harvey defined torsion-free derived series of groups and proved an injectivity theorem on the associated torsion-free quotients. We show that there is a universal construction which extends such an injectivity theorem to an isomorphism theorem. Our result relates injectivity theorems to a certain homology localization of groups. In order to give a concrete combinatorial description and existence proof of the necessary homology localization, we introduce a new version of algebraic closures of groups with coefficients by considering a certain type of equations.
Let $φ\colonΓ\to G$ be a homomorphism of groups. We consider factorizations $Γ\xrightarrow{f} M\xrightarrow{g} G$ of $φ$ such that either $g$ or $f$ are universal normal maps (namely, crossed modules). These two factorizations are natural generalizations of the usual normal closure and normalizer of a subgroup. Iterating these universal factorizations yield towers related, on the one hand, to hypercentral group extensions, Bousfield's localizations, and relative Schur multipliers. Dually, they extend to a relative situation, the automorphisms tower of a centerless group. Our constructions have…
Let W be an irreducible, finitely generated Coxeter group. The geometric representation provides an discrete embedding in the orthogonal group of the so-called Tits form. One can look at the representation modulo the kernel of this form; we give a new proof of the following result of Vinberg: if W is non-affine, then this representation remains faithful. Our proof uses relative Kazhdan Property (T). The following corollary was only known to hold when the Tits form is non-degenerate: the reduced C*-algebra of W is simple with a unique normalized trace. Some other corollaries are pointed out.
Linear differential algebraic groups (LDAGs) appear as Galois groups of systems of linear differential and difference equations with parameters. These groups measure differential-algebraic dependencies among solutions of the equations. LDAGs are now also used in factoring partial differential operators. In this paper, we study Zariski closures of LDAGs. In particular, we give a Tannakian characterization of algebraic groups that are Zariski closures of a given LDAG. Moreover, we show that the Zariski closures that correspond to representations of minimal dimension of a reductive LDAG are all i…
We investigate closure results for C-approximable groups, for certain classes C of groups with invariant length functions. In particular we prove, each time for certain (but not necessarily the same) classes C that (i) the direct product of two C-approximable groups is C-approximable; (ii) the restricted standard wreath product G wr H is C-approximable when G is C-approximable and H is residually finite; and (iii) a group G$ with normal subgroup N is C-approximable when N is C-approximable and G/N is amenable. Our direct product result is valid for LEF, weakly sofic and hyperlinear groups, as …
In this work we study some structural properties of the group $η^q(G, H)$, $q$ a non-negative integer, which is an extension of the $q$-tensor product $G \otimes^q H)$, where $G$ and $H$ are normal subgroups of some group $L$. We establish by simple arguments some closure properties of $η^q(G,H)$ when $G$ and $H$ belong to certain Schur classes. This extends similar results concerning the case $q = 0$ found in the literature. Restricting our considerations to the case $G = H$, we compute the $q$-tensor square $D_n \otimes^q D_n$ for $q$ odd, where $D_n$ denotes the dihedral group of order $2n$…
We prove that the class of nilpotent by finite, solvable by finite, polycyclic by finite, nilpotent of nilpotency class $n$ and supersolvable groups are closed under the formation of the non-abelian tensor product. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the non-abelian tensor product of finitely generated groups to be finitely generated. We prove that central extensions of most finite simple groups have trivial Bogomolov multiplier.
Autostackability for finitely presented groups is a topological property of the Cayley graph combined with formal language theoretic restrictions, that implies solvability of the word problem. The class of autostackable groups is known to include all asynchronously automatic groups with respect to a prefix-closed normal form set, and all groups admitting finite complete rewriting systems. Although groups in the latter two classes all satisfy the homological finiteness condition $FP_\infty$, we show that the class of autostackable groups includes a group that is not of type $FP_3$. We also show…

In this paper we show that the normal closure of the mth power of a half-twist has infinite index in the mapping class group of a punctured sphere. Furthermore, in some cases we prove that the quotient of the mapping class group of the punctured sphere by the normal closure of a power of a half-twist contains a free abelian subgroup. As a corollary we prove that the quotient of the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a surface of genus at least two by the normal closure of the mth power of a Dehn twist has infinite order, and for some integers m the quotient contains a free nonabelian subgrou…
A computation shows that there are 77 (up to scalar shifts) possible pairs of integer coefficient polynomials of degree five, having roots of unity as their roots, and satisfying the conditions of Beukers and Heckman [1], so that the Zariski closures of the associated monodromy groups are either finite or the orthogonal groups of non-degenerate and non-positive quadratic forms. Following the criterion of Beukers and Heckman [1], it is easy to check that only 4 of these pairs correspond to finite monodromy groups and only 17 pairs correspond to monodromy groups, for which, the Zariski closures …
The classical result by Dyer--Scott about fixed subgroups of finite order automorphisms of $F_n$ being free factors of $F_n$ is no longer true in $Z^m\times F_n$. Within this more general context, we prove a relaxed version in the spirit of Bestvina--Handel Theorem: the rank of fixed subgroups of finite order automorphisms is uniformly bounded in terms of $m,n$. We also study periodic points of endomorphisms of $Z^m\times F_n$, and give an algorithm to compute auto-fixed closures of finitely generated subgroups of $Z^m\times F_n$. On the way, we prove the analog of Day's Theorem for real eleme…
In this paper, we work on the pro-nilpotent group topology of a free group. First we investigate the closure of the product of finitely many subgroups of a free group in the pro-nilpotent group topology. We present an algorithm for the calculation of the closure in the pro-nilpotent group topology of the product of finitely many finitely generated subgroups of a free group. Then we deduce that the nil-closure of a rational subset is computable. We also prove that the pseudovarieties V malcev G_nil, for every decidable pseudovariety of monoids V, and J * G_nil are decidable.
We prove that the closure of every Jordan class J in a semisimple simply connected complex group G at a point x with Jordan decomposition x = rv is smoothly equivalent to the union of closures of those Jordan classes in the centraliser of r that are contained in J and contain x in their closure. For x unipotent we also show that the closure of J around x is smoothly equivalent to the closure of a Jordan class in Lie(G) around exp^{-1}x. For G simple we apply these results in order to determine a (non-exhaustive) list of smooth sheets in G, the complete list of regular Jordan classes whose clos…
Though algebraic geometry over $\mathbb C$ is often used to describe the closure of the tensors of a given size and complex rank, this variety includes tensors of both smaller and larger rank. Here we focus on the $n\times n\times n$ tensors of rank $n$ over $\mathbb C$, which has as a dense subset the orbit of a single tensor under a natural group action. We construct polynomial invariants under this group action whose non-vanishing distinguishes this orbit from points only in its closure. Together with an explicit subset of the defining polynomials of the variety, this gives a semialgebraic …
Let $X$ be a locally compact zero-dimensional space, let $S$ be an equicontinuous set of homeomorphisms such that $1 \in S = S^{-1}$, and suppose that $\overline{Gx}$ is compact for each $x \in X$, where $G = \langle S \rangle$. We show in this setting that a number of conditions are equivalent: (a) $G$ acts minimally on the closure of each orbit; (b) the orbit closure relation is closed; (c) for every compact open subset $U$ of $X$, there is $F \subseteq G$ finite such that $\bigcap_{g \in F}g(U)$ is $G$-invariant. All of these are equivalent to a notion of recurrence, which is a variation on…
Let G be a complete Kac-Moody group over a finite field. It is known that G possesses a BN-pair structure, all of whose parabolic subgroups are open in G. We show that, conversely, every open subgroup of G is contained with finite index in some parabolic subgroup; moreover there are only finitely many such parabolic subgroups. The proof uses some new results on parabolic closures in Coxeter groups. In particular, we give conditions ensuring that the parabolic closure of the product of two elements in a Coxeter group contains the respective parabolic closures of those elements.
Every left-invariant ordering of a group is either discrete, meaning there is a least element greater than the identity, or dense. Corresponding to this dichotomy, the spaces of left, Conradian, and bi-orderings of a group are naturally partitioned into two subsets. This note investigates the structure of this partition, specifically the set of dense orderings of a group and its closure within the space of orderings. We show that for bi-orderable groups this closure will always contain the space of Conradian orderings---and often much more. In particular, the closure of the set of dense orderi…
We are interested in semigroups of the form $\langle G,a\rangle\setminus G$, where $G$ is a permutation group of degree $n$ and $a$ a non-permutation on the domain of $G$. A theorem of the first author, Mitchell and Schneider shows that, if this semigroup is idempotent-generated for all possible choices of $a$, then $G$ is the symmetric or alternating group of degree $n$, with three exceptions (having $n=5$ or $n=6$). Our purpose here is to prove stronger results where we assume that $\langle G,a\rangle\setminus G$ is idempotent-generated for all maps of fixed rank $k$. For $k\ge6$ and $n\ge2k…
This paper provides some evidence for conjectural relations between extensions of (right) weak order on Coxeter groups, closure operators on root systems, and Bruhat order. The conjecture focused upon here refines an earlier question as to whether the set of initial sections of reflection orders, ordered by inclusion, forms a complete lattice. Meet and join in weak order are described in terms of a suitable closure operator. Galois connections are defined from the power set of W to itself, under which maximal subgroups of certain groupoids correspond to certain complete meet subsemilattices of…
The main result of this article is a refinement of the well-known subgroup separability results of Hall and Scott for free and surface groups. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup, there is a finite dimensional representation of the free or surface group that separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a free or surface group.
A. K. Bousfield's $H\mathbb Z$-localization of groups inverts homologically two-connected homomorphisms of groups. J. P. Levine's algebraic closure of groups inverts homomorphisms between finitely generated and finitely presented groups which are homologically two-connected and for which the image normally generates. We resolve an old problem concerning Bousfield $H\mathbb Z$-localization of groups, and answer two questions of Levine regarding algebraic closure of groups. In particular, we show that the kernel of the natural homomorphism from a group $G$ to it's Bousfield $H\mathbb Z$-localiza…
We compute the Zariski closure of the Kontsevich-Zorich monodromy groups arising from certain square tiled surfaces that are geometrically motivated. Specifically we consider three surfaces that emerge as translation covers of platonic solids and quotients of infinite polyhedra, and show that the Zariski closure of the monodromy group arising from each surface is equal to a power of $\rm{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})$. We prove our results by finding generators for the monodromy groups, using a theorem of Matheus-Yoccoz-Zmiaikou that provides constraints on the Zariski closure of the groups (to obtain an…
Let $φ\colonΓ\to G$ be a homomorphism of groups. In this paper we introduce the notion of a subnormal map (the inclusion of a subnormal subgroup into a group being a basic prototype). We then consider factorizations $Γ\xrightarrowψ M\xrightarrow{n} G$ of $φ,$ with $n$ a subnormal map. We search for a universal such factorization. When $Γ$ and $G$ are finite we show that such universal factorization exists: $Γ\toΓ_{\infty}\to G,$ where $Γ_{\infty}$ is a hypercentral extension of the subnormal closure $\mathcal{C}$ of $φ(Γ)$ in $G$ (i.e.~the kernel of the extension $Γ_{\infty}\to {\mathcal C}$ i…
We initiate the study of a measurable analogue of small topological full groups that we call $\mathrm L^1$ full groups. These groups are endowed with a Polish group topology which admits a natural complete right invariant metric. We mostly focus on $\mathrm L^1$ full groups of measure-preserving $\mathbb Z$-actions which are actually a complete invariant of flip conjugacy. We prove that for ergodic actions the closure of the derived group is topologically simple although it can fail to be simple. We also show that the closure of the derived group is connected, and that for measure-preserving f…
