An arbitrary order finite difference method for curved boundary domains with Cartesian grid is proposed. The technique handles in a universal manner Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin condition. We introduce the Reconstruction Off-site Data (ROD) method, that transfers in polynomial functions the information located on the physical boundary. Three major advantages are: (1) a simple description of the physical boundary with Robin condition using a collection of points; (2) no analytical expression (implicit or explicit) is required, particularly the ghost cell centroids' projection are not needed; (3) we split up into two independent machineries the boundary treatment and the resolution of the interior problem, coupled by the the ghost cell values. Numerical evidences based on the simple 2D convection-diffusion operators are presented to prove the ability of the method to reach at least the 6th-order with arbitrary smooth domains.
We propose a constraint preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for ideal compressible MHD in two dimensions and using Cartesian grids, which automatically maintains the global divergence-free property. The approximation of the magnetic field is achieved using Raviart-Thomas polynomials and the DG scheme is based on evolving certain moments of these polynomials which automatically guarantees divergence-free property. We also develop HLL-type multi-dimensional Riemann solvers to estimate the electric field at vertices which are consistent with the 1-D Riemann solvers. When limiters are used, t…
We report a three-dimensional numerical implementation of multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) based on a multi-resolution Cartesian grid, with no need to assume any symmetry of molecular structure. We successfully compute high-harmonic generation (HHG) of H2 and H2O. The present implementation will open a way to the first-principle theoretical study of intense-field and attosecond-pulse induced ultrafast phenomena in general molecules.
In this paper, a simple field function is presented for facilitating the solution of complex and dynamic fluid-solid systems on Cartesian grids with interface-resolved fluid-fluid, fluid-solid, and solid-solid interactions. For a Cartesian-grid-discretized computational domain segmented by a set of solid bodies, this field function explicitly tracks each subdomain with multiple resolved interfacial node layers. As a result, the presented field function enables low-memory-cost multidomain node mapping, efficient node remapping, fast collision detection, and expedient surface force integration. …
We review a scalable two- and three-dimensional computer code for low-temperature plasma simulations in multi-material complex geometries. Our approach is based on embedded boundary (EB) finite volume discretizations of the minimal fluid-plasma model on adaptive Cartesian grids, extended to also account for charging of insulating surfaces. We discuss the spatial and temporal discretization methods, and show that the resulting overall method is second order convergent, monotone, and conservative (for smooth solutions). Weak scalability with parallel efficiencies over 70\% are demonstrated up to…
In this communication, we present a new approach towards RT-TDDFT through time-dependent KS equations based on an \emph{adiabatic eigenstate subspace} (AES) procedure. It introduces a second-order split operator technique in energy representation to implement the approximate TD propagator in AES. Most of the elements in TDKS matrix are directly computed in Cartesian coordinate grid (CCG). To demonstrate the internal consistency of our proposed scheme, we computed the TD dipole moment and high harmonic generation spectra using an adiabatic local density approximation. The comparison with availa…
Efficient transport algorithms are essential to the numerical resolution of incompressible fluid flow problems. Semi-Lagrangian methods are widely used in grid based methods to achieve this aim. The accuracy of the interpolation strategy then determines the properties of the scheme. We introduce a simple multi-stage procedure which can easily be used to increase the order of accuracy of a code based on multi-linear interpolations. This approach is an extension of a corrective algorithm introduced by Dupont \& Liu (2003, 2007). This multi-stage procedure can be easily implemented in existing pa…
A ghost-cell immersed boundary method for the shallow water equations on Cartesian grids: mass conservation and wetting and drying over variable topography
We revisit the generation of balanced octrees for adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) of Cartesian domains with immersed complex geometries. In a recent short note [Hasbestan and Senocak, J. Comput. Phys. vol. 351:473-477 (2017)], we showed that the data-locality of the Z-order curve in hashed linear octree generation methods may not be perfect because of potential collisions in the hash table. Building on that observation, we propose a binarized octree generation method that complies with the Z-order curve exactly. Similar to a hashed linear octree generation method, we use Morton encoding to inde…
Density functional theory (DFT) has emerged as one of the most versatile and lucrative approaches in electronic structure calculations of many-electron systems in past four decades. Here we give an account of the development of a variational DFT method for atoms and molecules \emph{completely} in a Cartesian grid. The non-relativistic Kohn-Sham equation is solved by using an LCAO-MO ansatz. Atom-centered localized basis set, electron density, molecular orbitals, two-body potentials are directly constructed on the grid. We adopt a Fourier convolution method for classical Coulomb potentials by m…
A discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method based on dynamically adaptive Cartesian meshes (ACM) is developed for a full-wave analysis of electromagnetic fields in dispersive media. Hierarchical Cartesian grids offer simplicity close to that of structured grids and the flexibility of unstructured grids while being highly suited for adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). The developed DGTD-ACM achieves a desired accuracy by refining non-conformal meshes near material interfaces to reduce stair-casing errors without sacrificing the high efficiency afforded with uniform Cartesian meshes. Moreover…
The treatment of complex geometries in Computational Fluid Dynamics applications is a challenging endeavor, which immersed boundary and cut-cell techniques can significantly simplify by alleviating the meshing process required by body-fitted meshes. These methods however introduce new challenges, as the formulation of accurate and well-posed discrete operators becomes nontrivial. Here, a conservative cartesian cut cell method is proposed for the solution of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation on staggered Cartesian grids. Emphasis is set on the structure of the discrete operators, desig…
In this work, the projection-based embedded discrete fracture model (pEDFM) for corner-point grid (CPG) geometry is developed for simulation of flow and heat transfer in fractured porous media. Unlike classical embedded discrete fracture approaches, this method allows for using any geologically-relevant model with a complex geometry and generic conductivity contrasts between the rock matrix and the fractures (or faults). The mass and energy conservation equations are coupled using the fully-implicit (FIM) scheme, allowing for stable simulation. Independent corner-point grids are imposed on the…
A numerical scheme is described for accurately accommodating oblique, non-aligned, boundaries, on a three-dimensional cartesian grid. The scheme gives second-order accuracy in the solution for potential of Poisson's equation using compact difference stencils involving only nearest neighbors. Implementation for general "Robin" boundary conditions and for boundaries between media of different dielectric constant for arbitrary-shaped regions is described in detail. The scheme also provides for the interpolation of field (potential gradient) which, despite first-order peak errors immediately adjac…
We present an open-source adaptive front-tracking solver for biological capsules in viscous flows. The membrane elastic and bending forces are solved on a Lagrangian triangulation using a linear Finite Element Method and a paraboloid fitting method. The fluid flow is solved on an octree adaptive grid using the open-source platform Basilisk. The Lagrangian and Eulerian grids communicate using an Immersed Boundary Method by means of Peskin-like regularized Dirac delta functions. We demonstrate the accuracy of our solver with extensive validations: in Stokes conditions against the Boundary Integr…
The Poisson equation is commonly encountered in engineering, for instance in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) where it is needed to compute corrections to the pressure field to ensure the incompressibility of the velocity field. In the present work, we propose a novel fully convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to infer the solution of the Poisson equation on a 2D Cartesian grid with different resolutions given the right hand side term, arbitrary boundary conditions and grid parameters. It provides unprecedented versatility for a CNN approach dealing with partial differential equat…
High order reconstruction in the finite volume (FV) approach is achieved by a more fundamental form of the fifth order WENO reconstruction in the framework of orthogonally-curvilinear coordinates, for solving the hyperbolic conservation equations. The derivation employs a piecewise parabolic polynomial approximation to the zone averaged values to reconstruct the right, middle, and left interface values. The grid dependent linear weights of the WENO are recovered by inverting a Vandermode-like linear system of equations with spatially varying coefficients. A scheme for calculating the linear we…
