The Satisfactory Partition problem consists in deciding if the set of vertices of a given undirected graph can be partitioned into two nonempty parts such that each vertex has at least as many neighbours in its part as in the other part. This problem was introduced by Gerber and Kobler [European J. Oper. Res. 125 (2000) 283-291] and further studied by other authors, but its parameterized complexity remains open until now. It is known that the Satisfactory Partition problem, as well as a variant where the parts are required to be of the same cardinality, are NP-complete. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity by showing that (1) the problem is FPT when parameterized by the neighbourhood diversity of the input graph, (2) it can be solved in $O(n^{8 {\tt cw}})$ where ${\tt cw}$ is the clique-width,(3) a generalized version of the problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the treewidth.
In the minimum common string partition (MCSP) problem two related input strings are given. "Related" refers to the property that both strings consist of the same set of letters appearing the same number of times in each of the two strings. The MCSP seeks a minimum cardinality partitioning of one string into non-overlapping substrings that is also a valid partitioning for the second string. This problem has applications in bioinformatics e.g. in analyzing related DNA or protein sequences. For strings with lengths less than about 1000 letters, a previously published integer linear programming (I…
Given a simple undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ and a partition of the vertex set $V$ into $p$ parts, the \textsc{Partition Coloring Problem} asks if we can select one vertex from each part of the partition such that the chromatic number of the subgraph induced on the $p$ selected vertices is bounded by $k$. PCP is a generalized problem of the classical \textsc{Vertex Coloring Problem} and has applications in many areas, such as scheduling and encoding etc. In this paper, we show the complexity status of the \textsc{Partition Coloring Problem} with three parameters: the number of colors, the number …
Recently a large number of graph separator problems have been proven to be \textsc{NP-Hard}. Amazingly we have found that $α$-Subgraph-Balanced-Vertex-Separator, an important variant, has been overlooked. In this work ``Yet Another Graph Partitioning Problem is NP-Hard" we present the surprising result that $α$-Subgraph-Balanced-Vertex-Separator is $NP$-Hard. This is despite the fact that the constraints of our new problem are harder to satisfy than the original problem.
In this note, we present a substantial improvement on the computational complexity of the Erdös-Szekeres partitioning problem and review recent works on dynamic \textsf{LIS}.
In the k-partition problem (k-PP), one is given an edge-weighted undirected graph, and one must partition the node set into at most k subsets, in order to minimise (or maximise) the total weight of the edges that have their end-nodes in the same cluster. Various hierarchical variants of this problem have been studied in the context of data mining. We consider a 'two-level' variant that arises in mobile wireless communications. We show that an exact algorithm based on intelligent preprocessing, cutting planes and symmetry-breaking is capable of solving small- and medium-size instances to proven…
We consider a natural generalization of the Partial Vertex Cover problem. Here an instance consists of a graph G = (V,E), a positive cost function c: V-> Z^{+}, a partition $P_1,..., P_r$ of the edge set $E$, and a parameter $k_i$ for each partition $P_i$. The goal is to find a minimum cost set of vertices which cover at least $k_i$ edges from the partition $P_i$. We call this the Partition Vertex Cover problem. In this paper, we give matching upper and lower bound on the approximability of this problem. Our algorithm is based on a novel LP relaxation for this problem. This LP relaxation is ob…
We study the optimization version of the set partition problem (where the difference between the partition sums are minimized), which has numerous applications in decision theory literature. While the set partitioning problem is NP-hard and requires exponential complexity to solve (i.e., intractable); we formulate a weaker version of this NP-hard problem, where the goal is to find a locally optimal solution. We show that our proposed algorithms can find a locally optimal solution in near linear time. Our algorithms require neither positive nor integer elements in the input set, hence, they are…
A matroid $\mathcal{M}$ on a set $E$ of elements has the $α$-partition property, for some $α>0$, if it is possible to (randomly) construct a partition matroid $\mathcal{P}$ on (a subset of) elements of $\mathcal{M}$ such that every independent set of $\mathcal{P}$ is independent in $\mathcal{M}$ and for any weight function $w:E\to\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, the expected value of the optimum of the matroid secretary problem on $\mathcal{P}$ is at least an $α$-fraction of the optimum on $\mathcal{M}$. We show that the complete binary matroid, ${\cal B}_d$ on $\mathbb{F}_2^d$ does not satisfy the $α$-p…
In this paper, we consider different constrained partition problems for weighted trees and cactus graphs. We focus on the (l,u)-partition problem, which is the problem of partitioning a weighted graph into connected clusters such that each cluster fulfills the lower and upper weight constraints l and u. Partitioning into a minimum, maximum or a fixed number of clusters is known to be NP-hard in general, but polynomial-time solvable on trees. We prove that these three variants of the (l,u)-partition problem can be solved for cactus graphs as well by presenting a polynomial-time algorithm. Addit…
Multicore shared cache processors pose a challenge for designers of embedded systems who try to achieve minimal and predictable execution time of workloads consisting of several jobs. To address this challenge the cache is statically partitioned among the cores and the jobs are assigned to the cores so as to minimize the makespan. Several heuristic algorithms have been proposed that jointly decide how to partition the cache among the cores and assign the jobs. We initiate a theoretical study of this problem which we call the joint cache partition and job assignment problem. By a careful analys…
We consider the {\em vector partition problem}, where $n$ agents, each with a $d$-dimensional attribute vector, are to be partitioned into $p$ parts so as to minimize cost which is a given function on the sums of attribute vectors in each part. The problem has applications in a variety of areas including clustering, logistics and health care. We consider the complexity and parameterized complexity of the problem under various assumptions on the natural parameters $p,d,a,t$ of the problem where $a$ is the maximum absolute value of any attribute and $t$ is the number of agent types, and raise so…
Given a graph $G = (V, E)$, the $3$-path partition problem is to find a minimum collection of vertex-disjoint paths each of order at most $3$ to cover all the vertices of $V$. It is different from but closely related to the well-known $3$-set cover problem. The best known approximation algorithm for the $3$-path partition problem was proposed recently and has a ratio $13/9$. Here we present a local search algorithm and show, by an amortized analysis, that it is a $4/3$-approximation. This ratio matches up to the best approximation ratio for the $3$-set cover problem.
The balanced hypergraph partitioning problem (HGP) is to partition the vertex set of a hypergraph into k disjoint blocks of bounded weight, while minimizing an objective function defined on the hyperedges. Whereas real-world applications often use vertex and edge weights to accurately model the underlying problem, the HGP research community commonly works with unweighted instances. In this paper, we argue that, in the presence of vertex weights, current balance constraint definitions either yield infeasible partitioning problems or allow unnecessarily large imbalances and propose a new definit…
We study the optimization version of the equal cardinality set partition problem (where the absolute difference between the equal sized partitions' sums are minimized). While this problem is NP-hard and requires exponential complexity to solve in general, we have formulated a weaker version of this NP-hard problem, where the goal is to find a locally optimal solution. The local optimality considered in our work is under any swap between the opposing partitions' element pairs. To this end, we designed an algorithm which can produce such a locally optimal solution in $O(N^2)$ time and $O(N)$ spa…
In the Minimum Common String Partition Problem (MCSP), we are given two strings on input, and we want to partition both into the same collection of substrings, minimizing the number of the substrings in the partition. This combinatorial optimization problem has applications in computational biology and is NP-hard. Many different heuristic and exact methods exist for this problem, such as a Greedy approach, Ant Colony Optimization, or Integer Linear Programming. In this paper, we formulate the MCSP as a Dynamic Program and develop an exact solution algorithm based on Decision Diagrams for it. W…
We study the problem of multiway number partition optimization, which has a myriad of applications in the decision, learning and optimization literature. Even though the original multiway partitioning problem is NP-hard and requires exponential time complexity algorithms; we formulate an easier optimization problem, where our goal is to find a solution that is locally optimal. We propose a linearithmic time complexity $O(N\log N)$ algorithm that can produce such a locally optimal solution. Our method is robust against the input and requires neither positive nor integer inputs.
Partitioning sparse matrices and graphs is a common and important problem in many scientific and graph analytics applications. In this work, we are concerned with a spatial partitioning called rectilinear partitioning (also known as generalized block distribution) of sparse matrices, which is needed for tiled (or {\em blocked}) execution of sparse matrix and graph analytics kernels. More specifically, in this work, we address the problem of symmetric rectilinear partitioning of square matrices. By symmetric, we mean having the same partition on rows and columns of the matrix, yielding a specia…
Several algorithms with an approximation guarantee of $O(\log n)$ are known for the Set Cover problem, where $n$ is the number of elements. We study a generalization of the Set Cover problem, called the Partition Set Cover problem. Here, the elements are partitioned into $r$ \emph{color classes}, and we are required to cover at least $k_t$ elements from each color class $\mathcal{C}_t$, using the minimum number of sets. We give a randomized LP-rounding algorithm that is an $O(β+ \log r)$ approximation for the Partition Set Cover problem. Here $β$ denotes the approximation guarantee for a relat…
The Consensus Clustering problem has been introduced as an effective way to analyze the results of different microarray experiments. The problem consists of looking for a partition that best summarizes a set of input partitions (each corresponding to a different microarray experiment) under a simple and intuitive cost function. The problem admits polynomial time algorithms on two input partitions, but is APX-hard on three input partitions. We investigate the restriction of Consensus Clustering when the output partition is required to contain at most k sets, giving a polynomial time approximati…
This work addresses the NP-Hard problem of acyclic directed acyclic graph (DAG) partitioning problem. The acyclic partitioning problem is defined as partitioning the vertex set of a given directed acyclic graph into disjoint and collectively exhaustive subsets (parts). Parts are to be assigned such that the total sum of the vertex weights within each part satisfies a common upper bound and the total sum of the edge costs that connect nodes across different parts is minimized. Additionally, the quotient graph, i.e., the induced graph where all nodes that are assigned to the same part are contra…
The paper presents complexity results and performance guaranties for a family of approximation algorithms for an optimisation problem arising in software testing and manufacturing. The problem is formulated as a partitioning of a set where each element has an associated subset in another set, but can also be viewed as a scheduling problem with infinitely large communication delay, precedence constraints in the form of a bipartite graph, and duplication.
The family of judicious partitioning problems, introduced by Bollobás and Scott to the field of extremal combinatorics, has been extensively studied from a structural point of view for over two decades. This rich realm of problems aims to counterbalance the objectives of classical partitioning problems such as Min Cut, Min Bisection and Max Cut. While these classical problems focus solely on the minimization/maximization of the number of edges crossing the cut, judicious (bi)partitioning problems ask the natural question of the minimization/maximization of the number of edges lying in the (two…
The NP-hard Minimum Common String Partition problem asks whether two strings $x$ and $y$ can each be partitioned into at most $k$ substrings, called blocks, such that both partitions use exactly the same blocks in a different order. We present the first fixed-parameter algorithm for Minimum Common String Partition using only parameter $k$.
Computing high-quality graph partitions is a challenging problem with numerous applications. In this paper, we present a novel meta-heuristic for the balanced graph partitioning problem. Our approach is based on integer linear programs that solve the partitioning problem to optimality. However, since those programs typically do not scale to large inputs, we adapt them to heuristically improve a given partition. We do so by defining a much smaller model that allows us to use symmetry breaking and other techniques that make the approach scalable. For example, in Walshaw's well-known benchmark ta…
Sequence partition problems arise in many fields, such as sequential data analysis, information transmission, and parallel computing. In this paper, we study the following partition problem variant: given a sequence of $n$ items $1,\ldots,n$, where each item $i$ is associated with weight $w_i$ and another parameter $s_i$, partition the sequence into several consecutive subsequences, so that the total weight of each subsequence is no more than a threshold $w_0$, and the sum of the largest $s_i$ in each subsequence is minimized. This problem admits a straightforward solution based on dynamic pro…

The minimum common string partition problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem with applications in computational biology. In this work we propose the first integer linear programming model for solving this problem. Moreover, on the basis of the integer linear programming model we develop a deterministic 2-phase heuristic which is applicable to larger problem instances. The results show that provenly optimal solutions can be obtained for problem instances of small and medium size from the literature by solving the proposed integer linear programming model with CPLEX. Furthermore,…
We study the belief propagation algorithm for the graph bi-partitioning problem, i.e. the ground state of the ferromagnetic Ising model at a fixed magnetization. Application of a message passing scheme to a model with a fixed global parameter is not banal and we show that the magnetization can in fact be fixed in a local way within the belief propagation equations. Our method provides the full phase diagram of the bi-partitioning problem on random graphs, as well as an efficient heuristic solver that we anticipate to be useful in a wide range of application of the partitioning problem.
