This work focuses on the production of negative-ions on graphite and diamond surfaces bombarded by positive ions in a low pressure (2 Pa) low power (20 W) capacitively coupled deuterium plasma. A sample is placed opposite a mass spectrometer and negatively biased so that surface produced negative ions can be self-extracted from the plasma and measured by the mass spectrometer. The ratio between negative-ion counts at mass spectrometer and positive ion current at sample surface defines a relative negative-ion yield. Changes in negative-ion production yields versus positive ion energy in the range 10-60 eV are analysed. While the negative-ion production yield is decreasing for diamond surfaces when increasing the positive ion impact energy, it is strongly increasing for graphite. This increase is attributed to the onset of the sputtering mechanisms between 20 and 40 eV which creates negative ions at rather low energy that are efficiently collected by the mass spectrometer. The same mechanism occurs for diamond but is mitigated by a strong decrease of the ionization probability due to defect creation and loss of diamond electronic properties.
We measured, using Petawatt-level pulses, the average ion energy and neutron yield in high-intensity laser interactions with molecular clusters as a function of laser intensity. The interaction volume over which fusion occurred (1-10 mm^3) was larger than previous investigations, owing to the high laser power. Possible effects of prepulses were examined by implementing a pair of plasma mirrors. Our results show an optimum laser intensity for the production of energetic deuterium ions both with and without the use of the plasma mirrors. We measured deuterium plasmas with 14 keV average ion ener…
In this report, we describe characteristics of a ring-structure hydrogen plasma heated in electron cyclotron resonance conditions and confined in a mirror magnetic trap and discuss the relative efficiency of secondary electrons and thermoelectrons in negative hydrogen and deuterium ion production. The obtained data and calculations of the balance equations for possible reactions demonstrate that the negative ion production is realized in two stages. First, the hydrogen and deuterium molecules are excited in collisions with the plasma electrons to high-laying Rydberg or vibrational levels in th…
The production of negative ions is of significant interest for applications including mass spectrometry, particle acceleration, material surface processing, and neutral beam injection for magnetic confinement fusion. Methods to improve the efficiency of the surface production of negative ions, without the use of low work function metals, are of interest for mitigating the complex engineering challenges these materials introduce. In this study we investigate the production of negative ions by doping diamond with nitrogen. Negatively biased ($-20$ V or $-130$ V), nitrogen doped micro-crystalline…
A novel method for characterising the full spectrum of deuteron ions emitted by laser driven multi-species ion sources is discussed. The procedure is based on using differential filtering over the detector of a Thompson parabola ion spectrometer, which enables discrimination of deuterium ions from heavier ion species with the same charge-to-mass ratio (such as C6+, O8+, etc.). Commonly used Fuji Image plates were used as detectors in the spectrometer, whose absolute response to deuterium ions over a wide range of energies was calibrated by using slotted CR-39 nuclear track detectors. A typical…
The former all-carbon wall on JET has been replaced with beryllium in the main torus and tungsten in the divertor to mimic the surface materials envisaged for ITER. Comparisons are presented between Type I H-mode characteristics in each design by examining respective scans over deuterium fuelling and impurity seeding, required to ameliorate exhaust loads both in JET at full capability and in ITER.
We report on the successful demonstration of selective acceleration of deuterium ions by target-normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) with a high-energy petawatt laser. TNSA typically produces a multi-species ion beam that originates from the intrinsic hydrocarbon and water vapor contaminants on the target surface. Using the method first developed by Morrison, et al.,$^{1}$ an ion beam with $>$99$\%$ deuterium ions and peak energy 14 MeV/nucleon is produced with a 200 J, 700 fs, $>10^{20} W/cm^{2}$ laser pulse by cryogenically freezing heavy water (D$_{2}$O) vapor onto the rear surface of the targ…
The production of negative ions is of significant interest for applications including mass spectrometry, materials surface processing, and neutral beam injection for magnetic confined fusion. Neutral beam injection sources maximise negative ion production through the use of surface production processes and low work function metals, which introduce complex engineering. Investigating materials and techniques to avoid the use of low work function metals is of interest to broaden the application of negative ion sources and simplify future devices. In this study, we use pulsed sample biasing to inv…
Two-dimensional simulations of ion beam driven fast ignition are presented. Ignition energies of protons with Maxwellian spectrum and carbon ions with quasimonoenergetic and Maxwellian energy distributions are evaluated. The effect of the coronal plasma surrounding the compressed deuterium-tritium is studied for three different fuel density distributions. It is found that quasi- monoenergetic ions have better coupling with the compressed deuterium-tritium and substantially lower ignition energies. Comparison of quasimonoenergetic carbon ions and relativistic electrons as ignitor beams shows si…
In this work we explore the possibility that the motion of the deuterium ions emitted from Coulomb cluster explosions is chaotic enough to resemble thermalization. We analyze the process of nuclear fusion reactions driven by laser-cluster interactions in experiments conducted at the Texas Petawatt laser facility using a mixture of D2+3He and CD4+3He cluster targets. When clusters explode by Coulomb repulsion, the emission of the energetic ions is nearly isotropic. In the framework of cluster Coulomb explosions, we analyze the energy distributions of the ions using a Maxwell- Boltzmann (MB) dis…
Using the recently-installed Fast-Ion Deuterium Alpha (FIDA) spectrometer, the effects of low-frequency (20-50 kHz) chirping energetic particle modes with toroidal mode number n \geq 1 on the fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are considered. Results from the FIDA diagnostic are presented and discussed in the light of the present theoretical understanding of these modes, known as fishbones, in plasmas with reversed shear. Measurements of the fast-ion population reveal strong redistribution of fast ions in both real and velocity space as a result of the fishbones. Time-resolved measurements th…
For the ITER-like wall, the JET mirror link divertor spectroscopy system was redesigned to fully cover the tungsten horizontal strike plate with faster time resolution and improved near-UV performance. Since the ITER-like wall project involves a change in JET from a carbon dominated machine to a beryllium and tungsten dominated machine with residual carbon, the aim of the system is to provide the recycling flux, equivalent, to the impinging deuterium ion flux, the impurity fluxes (C, Be, O) and tungsten sputtering fluxes and hence give information on the tungsten divertor source. In order to d…

We report the experimental generation of highly energetic carbon ions up to 48 MeV per nucleon by shooting double-layer targets composed of well-controlled slightly underdense plasma (SUP) and ultrathin foils with ultra-intense femtosecond laser pulses. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal that carbon ions residing in the ultrathin foils undergo radiation pressure acceleration and long-time sheath field acceleration in sequence due to the existence of the SUP in front of the foils. Such an acceleration scheme is especially suited for heavy ion acceleration with femtosecond laser pulses. The bre…
A self-consistent model is presented for the simulation of a multi-component plasma in the tokamak boundary. A deuterium plasma is considered, with the plasma species that include electrons, deuterium atomic ions and deuterium molecular ions, while the deuterium atoms and molecules constitute the neutral species. The plasma and neutral models are coupled via a number of collisional interactions, which include dissociation, ionization, charge-exchange and recombination processes. The derivation of the three-fluid drift-reduced Braginskii equations used to describe the turbulent plasma dynamics …
Significant effects of impurities on residual zonal flow (ZF) in deuterium (D)-tritium (T) plasmas are found. When the gyroradius of impurities is larger (smaller) than that of main ions, the intermediate scale (radial wavelength between trapped ion radial width $ρ_{bi}$ and trapped electron radial width $ρ_{be}$) residual ZF level is increased (decreased) due to the presence of various impurities with the tolerance concentration in JET and ITER, even for trace tungsten (W). For short scale (radial wavelength comparable to $ρ_{be}$) region, the residual ZF level is increased by most of the imp…
Two different methods have been employed to determine the plasma temperature in a laser-cluster fusion experiment on the Texas Petawatt laser. In the first, the temperature was derived from time-of-flight data of deuterium ions ejected from exploding D2 or CD4 clusters. In the second, the temperature was measured from the ratio of the rates of two different nuclear fusion reactions occurring in the plasma at the same time: D(d, 3He)n and 3He(d, p)4He. The temperatures determined by these two methods agree well, which indicates that: i) The ion energy distribution is not significantly distorted…
It has recently been proposed that transport of energetic deuterium-trition ions (Knudsen layer), owing to their long mean free path, may deplete the tail of the velocity distribution in the vicinity of the Gamow peak and thus serve to greatly reduce the yield of an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasma [Molvig \emph{et al.}, \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.}, 109:095001 (2012)]. Molecular dynamics simulations of the non-equilibrium response of a fusion plasma to ion distribution tail loss show that equilibrium is re-established extremely rapidly, with ion tail replenishment complete in less than 1 p…
Thermal equilibrium rate can play an important role in the energy deposition of beam to the fuel in fast ignition due to high temperature difference between projectile ions and background plasma ions. In this study the temperature equilibration rate of a quasi-monoenergetic deuteron beam with an equimolar Deuterium-Tritium fusion plasma with a Maxwellian energy distribution is calculated by kinetic theory equations. In this theory, binary collisions is described by the Boltzman equation and collective effects is described by the Lenard-Balescu equation. The obtained results show that at higher…
Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets driven by quasi-monoenergetic ion beams is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Light and intermediate ions such as lithium, carbon, aluminium and vanadium have been considered. Simulations show that the minimum ignition energies of an ideal configuration of compressed Deuterium-Tritium are almost independent on the ion atomic number. However, they are obtained for increasing ion energies, which scale, approximately, as Z^2, where Z is the ion atomic number. Assuming that the ion beam can be focused into 10 μm spots, a new irradiation scheme …
To greatly enhance output of nuclear fusion produced neutrons in a laser-initiated Coulomb explosion of Deuterium clusters, we propose to accelerate the resulting ions by a quasi-$dc$ electrical pulse to the energies where the $D^+ + D$ collision cross-section is the highest. With $D^+$ ions bombarding then a Deuterium-rich solid-state cathode, this allows one to solve a few problems simultaneously by (a) completely removing electron cloud hindering the Coulomb explosion of ionic core, (b) utilizing up to 100% of the cluster ions to collide with the high-density packed nuclei, and (c) reaching…
Plasma Surface Interaction(PSI) effects on plasma burn-through are compared for the carbon wall and the ITER-Like Wall(ILW) at JET. For the carbon wall, the radiation barrier and C2+ influx have a significant linear correlation whereas the radiation barrier in the ILW does not have such a linear correlation with Be 1+ influx. The JET data are explained by the simulation results of the DYON code. The radiation barrier in the carbon wall JET is dominated by the carbon radiation, but the radiation barrier in the ILW is mainly from the deuterium radiation rather than the beryllium radiation.
To this day the interaction of high-intensity lasers with matter is considered to be a possible candidate for next generation particle accelerators. Within the LIGHT collaboration crucial work for the merging of a high-intensity laser driven ion source with conventional accelerator technology has been done in the past years. The simulation studies we report about are an important step in providing short and intense mid-Z heavy ion beams for future applications.
Fast particle-driven waves in the ion cyclotron frequency range (ion cyclotron emission or ICE) have provided a valuable diagnostic of confined and escaping fast ions in many tokamaks. This is a passive, non-invasive diagnostic that would be compatible with the high radiation environment of deuterium-tritium plasmas in ITER, and could provide important information on fusion α-particles and beam ions in that device. In JET, ICE from confined fusion products scaled linearly with fusion reaction rate over six orders of magnitude and provided evidence that α-particle confinement was close to class…
Predictive simulations of mixed plasma discharges, like deuterium-tritium plasmas, rely on self-consistent models for particle transport. These models have to be validated with interpretive analysis of existing experiments. Accounting for uncertainties in the particle balance equation is important for modelling of mixed-plasma discharges because simulation results are directly affected by plasma composition. JET deuterium and mixed hydrogen-deuterium plasma discharges heated by neutral beams only are analysed with the TRANSP code. Influence of prescribed quantities and terms entering into the …
The laser driven acceleration of ions is considered a promising candidate for an ion source for hadron therapy of oncological diseases. Though proton and carbon ion sources are conventionally used for therapy, other light ions can also be utilized. Whereas carbon ions require 400 MeV per nucleon to reach the same penetration depth as 250 MeV protons, helium ions require only 250 MeV per nucleon, which is the lowest energy per nucleon among the light ions. This fact along with the larger biological damage to cancer cells achieved by helium ions, than that by protons, makes this species an inter…
Collisionless shock acceleration of carbon ions (C$^{6+}$) is investigated in the ultra-relativistic regime of laser-plasma interaction by accounting for the radiation reaction force and the pair production in particle-in-cell simulations. Both radiation reaction force and pair plasma formation tend to slow down the shock velocity, reducing the energy of the accelerated ions, albeit extending the time scales of the acceleration process. Slab plasma target achieves lower energy spread while target with a tailored density profile yields higher ion acceleration energies.
Ion cyclotron emission (ICE) was the first collective radiative instability, driven by confined fusion-born ions, observed from deuterium-tritium plasmas in JET and TFTR. ICE comprises strongly suprathermal emission, which has spectral peaks at multiple ion cyclotron harmonic frequencies as evaluated at the outer mid-plane edge of tokamak plasmas. The measured intensity of ICE spectral peaks scaled linearly with measured fusion reactivity in JET. In other large tokamak plasmas, ICE is currently used as an indicator of fast ions physics. The excitation mechanism for ICE is the magnetoacoustic c…
Equation of state for partially ionized carbon at temperatures T > ~ 10^5 K is calculated in a wide range of densities, using the method of free energy minimization in the framework of the chemical picture of plasmas. The free energy model includes the internal partition functions of bound species. The latter are calculated by a self-consistent treatment of each ionization stage in the plasma environment taking into account pressure ionization. The long-range Coulomb interactions between ions and screening of the ions by free electrons are included using our previously published analytical mod…
We report stable laser-driven proton beam acceleration from ultrathin foils consisting of two ion species: heavier carbon ions and lighter protons. Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that the radiation pressure leads to very fast and complete spatial separation of the species. The laser pulse does not penetrate the carbon ion layer, avoiding the proton Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability. Ultimately, the carbon ions are heated and spread extensively in space. In contrast, protons always ride on the front of the carbon ion cloud, forming a compact high quality bunch. We…
For effectively neutralization of the powerful negative ions beams of hydrogen and deuterium the photon target is considered in long time. The attractiveness of the traditional approach (Fabry-Perot resonators) to their creation is limited to a number of stringent technical requirements and large economic costs. In this paper we propose a new concept of non-resonant photon trap (storage) for creation more technologically simple optical neutralizers.
We report on charge state measurements of laser-accelerated carbon ions in the energy range of several MeV penetrating a dense partially ionized plasma. The plasma was generated by irradiation of a foam target with laser-induced hohlraum radiation in the soft X-ray regime. We used the tri-cellulose acetate (C$_{9}$H$_{16}$O$_{8}$) foam of 2 mg/cm$^{-3}$ density, and $1$-mm interaction length as target material. This kind of plasma is advantageous for high-precision measurements, due to good uniformity and long lifetime compared to the ion pulse length and the interaction duration. The plasma p…
In magnetically-confined plasmas of tokamaks, neutral deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) atoms play a role in energy, momentum, and particle balance, as well as the stabilization of plasma turbulence. One key important fusion performance parameter is the pedestal density. Understanding the pedestal density formation is critical for the development of predictive model of future fusion devices. Typically, measurements of the neutrals are obtained using optical emission spectroscopy of the Lyman alpha lines, which is a line-integrated measurement. The plasma in tokamaks is characterized by a high density o…
Intense laser-plasma interactions are an essential tool for the laboratory study of ion acceleration at a collisionless shock. With two-dimensional particle-in-cell calculations of a multicomponent plasma we observe two electrostatic collisionless shocks at two distinct longitudinal positions when driven with a linearly-polarized laser at normalized laser vector potential a0 that exceeds 10. Moreover, these shocks, associated with protons and carbon ions, show a power-law dependence on a0 and accelerate ions to different velocities in an expanding upstream with higher flux than in a single-com…
