Let $H$ be a simple undirected graph and $G=\mathrm{L}(H)$ be its line graph. Assume that $Δ(G)$ denotes the clique complex of $G$. We show that $Δ(G)$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is shellable if and only if it is vertex decomposable. Moreover if $Δ(G)$ is pure, we prove that these conditions are also equivalent to being strongly connected. Furthermore, we state a complete characterizations of those $H$ for which $Δ(G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay, sequentially Cohen-Macaulay or Gorenstein. We use these characterizations to present linear time algorithms which take a graph $G$, check whether $G$ is a line graph and if yes, decide if $Δ(G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay or sequentially Cohen-Macaulay or Gorenstein.
A recent conjecture that appeared in three papers by Bigdeli--Faridi, Dochtermann, and Nikseresht, is that every simplicial complex whose clique complex has shellable Alexander dual, is ridge-chordal. This strengthens the long-standing Simon's conjecture that the $k$-skeleton of the simplex is extendably shellable, for any $k$. We show that the stronger conjecture has a negative answer, by exhibiting an infinite family of counterexamples.
Weighted simplicial complexes (WSCs) are powerful tools for describing weighted cloud data or networks with weighted nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to study WSCs via the concept of polarization. Polarization of a WSC allows one to construct a new (unweighted) simplicial complex which coincides with an object called the mixed wreath product. This new construction preserves several properties and invariants of the underlying simplicial complex of a WSC. Our main focus is to analyze WSCs through their underlying simplicial complexes and mixed wreath products. Combinatorially, w…
Given an infinite field $\mathbb{k}$ and a simplicial complex $Δ$, a common theme in studying the $f$- and $h$-vectors of $Δ$ has been the consideration of the Hilbert series of the Stanley--Reisner ring $\mathbb{k}[Δ]$ modulo a generic linear system of parameters $Θ$. Historically, these computations have been restricted to special classes of complexes (most typically triangulations of spheres or manifolds). We provide a compact topological expression of $h_{d-1}^\mathfrak{a}(Δ)$, the dimension over $\mathbb{k}$ in degree $d-1$ of $\mathbb{k}[Δ]/(Θ)$, for any complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$. I…
We call a simplicial complex algebraically rigid if its Stanley-Reisner ring admits no nontrivial infinitesimal deformations, and call it inseparable if does not allow any deformation to other simplicial complexes. Algebraically rigid simplicial complexes are inseparable. In this paper we study inseparability and rigidity of Stanley-Reisner rings, and apply the general theory to letterplace ideals as well as to edge ideals of graphs. Classes of algebraically rigid simplicial complexes and graphs are identified.
A relative simplicial complex is a collection of sets of the form $Δ\setminus Γ$, where $Γ\subset Δ$ are simplicial complexes. Relative complexes played key roles in recent advances in algebraic, geometric, and topological combinatorics but, in contrast to simplicial complexes, little is known about their general combinatorial structure. In this paper, we address a basic question in this direction and give a characterization of $f$-vectors of relative (multi)complexes on a ground set of fixed size. On the algebraic side, this yields a characterization of Hilbert functions of quotients of homog…
In this paper, we introduce and study families of squarefree monomial ideals called clique ideals and independence ideals that can be associated to a finite graph. A family of clique ideals with linear resolutions has been characterized. Moreover some families of graphs for which the quotient ring of their clique ideal is Cohen-Macaulay are introduced and some homological invariants of the clique ideal of a graph $G$ which is the complement of a path graph or a cycle graph, are obtained. Also some algebraic properties of the independence ideal of path graphs, cycle graphs and chordal graphs ar…
We study the minimal primary decomposition of completely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals via simplicial complexes. We determine some algebraic invariants of such a class of $t$-spread ideals. Hence, we classify all $t$-spread lexsegment ideals which are Cohen-Macaulay.
We recall first Gallai-simplicial complex $Δ_Γ(G)$ associated to Gallai graph $Γ(G)$ of a planar graph $G$. The Euler characteristic is a very useful topological and homotopic invariant to classify surfaces. In Theorems 3.2 and 3.4, we compute Euler characteristics of Gallai-simplicial complexes associated to triangular ladder and prism graphs, respectively. Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ vertices of the form $n=3l+2$ or $3l+3$. In Theorem 4.4, we prove that $G$ will be $f$-Gallai graph for the following types of constructions of $G$. Type 1. When $n=3l+2$. $G=\mathbb{S}_{4l}$ is a gr…
