For trace class operators $A, B \in \mathcal{B}_1(\mathcal{H})$ ($\mathcal{H}$ a complex, separable Hilbert space), the product formula for Fredholm determinants holds in the familiar form \[ {\det}_{\mathcal{H}} ((I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) (I_{\mathcal{H}} - B)) = {\det}_{\mathcal{H}} (I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) {\det}_{\mathcal{H}} (I_{\mathcal{H}} - B). \] When trace class operators are replaced by Hilbert--Schmidt operators $A, B \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H})$ and the Fredholm determinant ${\det}_{\mathcal{H}}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - A)$, $A \in \mathcal{B}_1(\mathcal{H})$, by the 2nd regularized Fredholm determinant ${\det}_{\mathcal{H},2}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) = {\det}_{\mathcal{H}} ((I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) \exp(A))$, $A \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H})$, the product formula must be replaced by \[ {\det}_{\mathcal{H},2} ((I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) (I_{\mathcal{H}} - B)) = {\det}_{\mathcal{H},2} (I_{\mathcal{H}} - A) {\det}_{\mathcal{H},2} (I_{\mathcal{H}} - B) \exp(- {\rm tr}(AB)). \] The product formula for the case of higher regularized Fredholm determinants ${\det}_{\mathcal{H},k}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - A)$, $A \in \mathcal{B}_k(\mathcal{H})$, $k \in \mathbb{N}$, $k \geq 2$, does not seem to be easily accessible and hence this note aims at filling this gap in the literature.
After recalling a fundamental identity relating traces and modified Fredholm determinants, we apply it to a class of half-line Schrödinger operators $(- d^2/dx^2) + q$ on $(0,\infty)$ with purely discrete spectra. Roughly speaking, the class considered is generated by potentials $q$ that, for some fixed $C_0 > 0$, $\varepsilon > 0$, $x_0 \in (0, \infty)$, diverge at infinity in the manner that $q(x) \geq C_0 x^{(2/3) + \varepsilon_0}$ for all $x \geq x_0$. We treat all self-adjoint boundary conditions at the left endpoint $0$.
Using the relation established by Johnson--Zumbrun between Hill's method of aproximating spectra of periodic-coefficient ordinary differential operators and a generalized periodic Evans function given by the $2$-modified characteristic Fredholm determinant of an associated Birman--Schwinger system, together with a Volterra integral computation introduced by Gesztesy--Makarov, we give an explicit connection between the generalized Birman--Schwinger-type periodic Evans function and the standard Jost function-type periodic Evans function defined by Gardner in terms of the fundamental solution of …
The principal results of this paper consist of an intrinsic definition of the Evans function in terms of newly introduced generalized matrix-valued Jost solutions for general first-order matrix-valued differential equations on the real line, and a proof of the fact that the Evans function, a finite-dimensional determinant by construction, coincides with a modified Fredholm determinant associated with a Birman-Schwinger-type integral operator up to a nonvanishing factor.
We consider Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated with (not necessarily self-adjoint) Schrodinger operators describing nonlocal interactions in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$, $n\geq 2$, where $Ω$ is an open set with a compact, nonempty boundary satisfying certain regularity conditions. As an application we describe a reduction of a certain ratio of Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ to Fredholm perturbation determinants associated with operators in $L^2(\partialΩ; d^{n-1}σ)$. This leads to an extension of a variant of a celebrated formula due to Jost and Pais, whi…
We consider Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated with (not necessarily self-adjoint) Schrodinger operators in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$, $n=2,3$, where $Ω$ is an open set with a compact, nonempty boundary satisfying certain regularity conditions. This leads to a two- and three-dimensional extension of a variant of a celebrated formula due to …
We revisit the computation of (2-modified) Fredholm determinants for operators with matrix-valued semi-separable integral kernels. The latter occur, for instance, in the form of Green's functions associated with closed ordinary differential operators on arbitrary intervals on the real line. Our approach determines the (2-modified) Fredholm determinants in terms of solutions of closely associated Volterra integral equations, and as a result offers a natural way to compute such determinants. We illustrate our approach by identifying classical objects such as the Jost function for half-line Schrö…
Let $L$ be a self-adjoint invertible operator in a Hilbert space such that $L^{-1}$ is $p$-summable. Under a certain discrete dimension spectrum assumption on $L$, we study the relation between the (regularized) Fredholm determinant, $\det_{p}(I+z\cdot L^{-1})$, on the one hand and the zeta regularized determinant, $\det_ζ(L+z)$, on the other. One of the main results is the formula \begin{equation*} \frac{\det_ζ (L + z)}{\det_ζ (L)} = \exp \left( \sum_{j=1}^{p-1} \frac{z^j}{j!} \cdot \frac{d^j}{dz^j} \log \det\nolimits_ζ (L+z) |_{z=0} \right) \cdot \det\nolimits_{p}(I + z \cdot L^{-1} ). \end{…
We show that the Szego regularized determinant of a zeroth order operator differs from the zeta regularized determinant of the same operator by a local term. In addition, we compute multiplicative anomalies for the zeta regularized determinant.
We prove that the resonances of long range perturbations of the (semiclassical) Laplacian are the zeroes of natural perturbation determinants. We more precisely obtain factorizations of these determinants of the form $ \prod_{w = {\rm resonances}}(z-w) \exp (φ_p(z,h)) $ and give semiclassical bounds on $ \partial_z φ_p $ as well as a representation of Koplienko's regularized spectral shift function. Here the index $ p \geq 1 $ depends on the decay rate at infinity of the perturbation.
We study the spectral zeta functions of the Laplacian on fractal sets which are locally self-similar fractafolds, in the sense of Strichartz. These functions are known to meromorphically extend to the entire complex plane, and the locations of their poles, sometimes referred to as complex dimensions, are of special interest. We give examples of self-similar sets such that their complex dimensions are not on the imaginary axis, which allows us to interpret their Laplacian determinant as the regularized product of their eigenvalues. We then investigate a connection between the logarithm of the d…
Let $A$ be an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of positive order on a compact closed manifold, and let $T$ be a pseudodifferential operator of negative order such that $T^m$ is of trace class. We compute $\log\det(A(I+T))-\log\det A-\log\det_m (I+T)$ where first two determinants are zeta function regularized, and the last one is a regularized Fredholm determinant.
The Evans function is a well known tool for locating spectra of differential operators in one spatial dimension. In this paper we construct a multidimensional analogue as the modified Fredholm determinant of a ratio of Dirichlet-to-Robin operators on the boundary. This gives a tool for studying the eigenvalue counting functions of second-order elliptic operators that need not be self-adjoint. To do this we use local representation theory for meromorphic operator-valued pencils, and relate the algebraic multiplicities of eigenvalues of elliptic operators to those of the Robin-to-Robin and Robin…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of regularized determinants of certain Laplace type operators with respect to singular deformations of the underlying manifold which are obtained by stretching a tubular neighborhood of an embedded separating hypersurface to a cylinder of infinite length. Using the asymptotic expansions, we derive adiabatic splitting formulas for regularized determinants of Laplace type operators.
We study the analog of semi-separable integral kernels in $\cH$ of the type {equation*} K(x,x')={cases} F_1(x)G_1(x'), & a<x'< x< b, \\ F_2(x)G_2(x'), & a<x<x'<b, {cases} {equation*} where $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$, and for a.e.\ $x \in (a,b)$, $F_j (x) \in \cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)$ and $G_j(x) \in \cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)$ such that $F_j(\cdot)$ and $G_j(\cdot)$ are uniformly measurable, and {equation*} \|F_j(\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)} \in L^2((a,b)), \; \|G_j (\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)} \in L^2((a,b)), \quad j=1,2, {equation*} with $\cH$ and $\cH_j$, $j=1,2$, complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Assuming…
We consider Fredholm determinants of the form identity minus product of spectral projections corresponding to isolated parts of the spectrum of a pair of self-adjoint operators. We show an identity relating such determinants to an integral over the spectral shift function in the case of a rank-one perturbation. More precisely, we prove $$ -\ln \left(\det \big(\mathbf{1} -\mathbf{1} _{I}(A) \mathbf{1}_{\mathbb R\backslash I}(B)\mathbf{1}_{I}(A)\big) \right) = \int_I \text{d} x \int_{\mathbb R\backslash I} \text{d} y\, \frac{ξ(x)ξ(y)}{(y-x)^2}, $$ where $\mathbf{1}_J (\cdot)$ denotes the spectra…
Let X be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension two or three and let P be a point of X. We derive comparison formulas relating the zeta-regularized determinant of an arbitrary self-adjoint extension of (symmetric) Laplace operator with domain, consisting of smooth functions with compact supports which does not contain P, to the zeta-regularized determinant of the self-adjoint Laplacian on X.
We study the analog of semi-separable integral kernels in $\mathcal{H}$ of the type $$ K(x,x')=\begin{cases} F_1(x)G_1(x'), & a<x'< x< b, \\ F_2(x)G_2(x'), & a<x<x'<b, \end{cases} $$ where $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$, and for a.e.\ $x \in (a,b)$, $F_j (x) \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H}_j,\mathcal{H})$ and $G_j(x) \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{H}_j)$ such that $F_j(\cdot)$ and $G_j(\cdot)$ are uniformly measurable, and $$ \|F_j(\cdot)\|_{\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H}_j,\mathcal{H})} \in L^2((a,b)), \; \|G_j (\cdot)\|_{\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{H}_j)} \in L^2((a,b)), \quad j=1,2, $…
For cofinite Kleinian groups (or equivalently, finite-volume three-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds) with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we evaluate the regularized determinant of the Laplacian using W. Muller's regularization. We give an explicit formula relating the determinant to the Selberg zeta-function.
We consider a combinatorial Laplace operator on a sequence of discrete graphs which approximates the m-dimensional torus when the discretization parameter tends to infinity. We establish a polyhomogeneous expansion of the resolvent trace for the family of discrete graphs, jointly in the resolvent and the discretization parameter. Based on a result about interchanging regularized limits and regularized integrals, we compare the regularized limit of the log-determinants of the combinatorial Laplacian on the sequence of discrete graphs with the logarithm of the zeta determinant for the Laplace Be…
The principal aim in this paper is to develop an effective and unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents (and resolvent differences), Fredholm determinants, $ζ$-functions, and $ζ$-function regularized determinants associated with linear operators in a Hilbert space. In particular, we detail the connection between Fredholm and $ζ$-function regularized determinants. Concrete applications of our formalism to general (i.e., three-coefficient) regular Sturm-Liouville operators on compact intervals with various (separated and coupled) boundary conditions, and Schrödinger operators …
We explore the extent to which a variant of a celebrated formula due to Jost and Pais, which reduces the Fredholm perturbation determinant associated with the Schrödinger operator on a half-line to a simple Wronski determinant of appropriate distributional solutions of the underlying Schrödinger equation, generalizes to higher dimensions. In this multi-dimensional extension the half-line is replaced by an open set $Ω\subset\bbR^n$, $n\in\bbN$, $n\geq 2$, where $Ω$ has a compact, nonempty boundary $\partialΩ$ satisfying certain regularity conditions. Our variant involves ratios of perturbation …
We study the eta invariants of Dirac operators and the regularized determinants of Dirac Laplacians over hyperbolic manifolds with cusps. We follow Werner M"uller and use relative traces to define these spectral invariants. We show the regularity of eta and zeta functions at s=0. The Selberg trace formula and the detailed analysis of the unipotent terms give the relation between the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type. This allows us to show the vanishing of the unipotent contribution. We show that the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type satisfy certain …
The aim of this paper is twofold: On one hand we discuss an abstract approach to symmetrized Fredholm perturbation determinants and an associated trace formula for a pair of operators of positive-type, extending a classical trace formula. On the other hand, we continue a recent systematic study of boundary data maps, that is, 2 \times 2 matrix-valued Dirichlet-to-Neumann and more generally, Robin-to-Robin maps, associated with one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on a compact interval [0,R] with separated boundary conditions at 0 and R. One of the principal new results in this paper reduces a…
The principal aim in this paper is to employ a recently developed unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents and $ζ$-functions to efficiently compute values of spectral $ζ$-functions at positive integers associated to regular (three-coefficient) self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville differential expressions $τ$. Depending on the underlying boundary conditions, we express the $ζ$-function values in terms of a fundamental system of solutions of $τy = z y$ and their expansions about the spectral point $z=0$. Furthermore, we give the full analytic continuation of the $ζ$-function through …
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$ equipped with flat conical metric $|Ω|$, where $Ω$ be a holomorphic quadratic differential on $X$ with $4g-4$ simple zeroes. Let $K$ be the canonical line bundle on $X$. Introduce the Cauchy-Riemann operators $\bar \partial$ and $\partial$ acting on sections of holomorphic line bundles over $X$ ($K^2$ in the definition of $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}$ below) and, respectively, anti-holomorphic line bundles ($\bar { K}^{-1}$ below). Consider the Laplace operator $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}:=|Ω| \partial |Ω|^{-2}\bar\partial$ acting in the Hilbert space of square int…
We study various spectral theoretic aspects of non-self-adjoint operators. Specifically, we consider a class of factorable non-self-adjoint perturbations of a given unperturbed non-self-adjoint operator and provide an in-depth study of a variant of the Birman-Schwinger principle as well as local and global Weinstein-Aronszajn formulas. Our applications include a study of suitably symmetrized (modified) perturbation determinants of Schrödinger operators in dimensions n=1,2,3 and their connection with Krein's spectral shift function in two- and three-dimensional scattering theory. Moreover, we s…
