We report on the first in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy of the proton-dripline nucleus $^{40}$Sc using two-nucleon pickup onto an intermediate-energy rare-isotope beam of $^{38}$Ca. The $^{9}$Be($^{38}$Ca,$^{40}$Sc$+γ$)X reaction at 60.9 MeV/nucleon mid-target energy selectively populates states in $^{40}$Sc for which the transferred proton and neutron couple to high orbital angular momentum. In turn, due to angular-momentum selection rules in proton emission and the nuclear structure and energetics of $^{39}$Ca, such states in $^{40}$Sc then exhibit $γ$-decay branches although they are well above the proton separation energy. This work uniquely complements results from particle spectroscopy following charge-exchange reactions on $^{40}$Ca as well as $^{40}$Ti EC/$β^+$ decay which both display very different selectivities. The population and $γ$-ray decay of the previously known first $(5^-)$ state at 892 keV and the observation of a new level at 2744 keV are discussed in comparison to the mirror nucleus and shell-model calculations. On the experimental side, this work shows that high-resolution in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy is possible with new generation Ge arrays for reactions induced by rare-isotope beams on the level of a few $μ$b of cross section.
Nuclei in the vicinity of the proton dripline and beyond it are a fascinating realm within the chart of nuclei. In this chapter the main phenomena that characterize this domain and are not to be found elsewhere are explored. While moving away from the $β$-stability valley towards the proton dripline, phenomena like very exotic decay modes such as $β$-delayed (multi-) particle emission, and proton-, or two-proton radioactivity are encountered. Landmark nuclei are here two isotopes with magic proton and neutron numbers, $^{48}$Ni and $^{100}$Sn. Moreover, proton-rich nuclei ($N < Z$) display oth…
Prospects of experimental studies of argon and chlorine isotopes located far beyond the proton dripline are studied by using systematics and cluster models. The deviations from the widespread systematics observed in $^{28,29}$Cl and $^{29,30}$Ar have been theoretically substantiated, and analogous deviations predicted for the lighter chlorine and argon isotopes. The limits of nuclear structure existence are predicted for Ar and Cl isotopic chains, with $^{26}$Ar and $^{25}$Cl found to be the lightest sufficiently long-living nuclear systems. By simultaneous measurements of protons and $γ$-rays…
Single-nucleon knockout reaction studies of the proton-dripline nuclei $^9$C and $^{13}$O suggest an appreciable suppression of spectroscopic factors. In this work, we calculate the one-neutron and one-proton spectroscopic factors for the mirror pair $^9$C-$^9$Li and $^{13}$O using two variants of the continuum shell model: the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model and the real-energy Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum. Our results indicate that the continuum effects strongly suppress the spectroscopic factors of well-bound orbits in the dripline systems, but have less impact on the spectroscopi…
The proton-unbound argon and chlorine isotopes have been studied by measuring trajectories of their decay-in-flight products by using a tracking technique with micro-strip detectors. The proton ($1p$) and two-proton ($2p$) emission processes have been detected in the measured angular correlations "heavy-fragment"+$p$ and "heavy-fragment"+$p$+$p$, respectively. The ground states of the previously unknown isotopes $^{30}$Cl and $^{28}$Cl have been observed for the first time, providing the $1p$-separation energies $S_p$ of $-0.48(2)$ and $-1.60(8)$ MeV, respectively. The relevant systematics of …
Exploring the neutron dripline two neutrons at a time: The first observations of the 26O and 16Be ground state resonances
We investigate the dripline mirror nuclei, $^{11}$Li and $^{11}$O, located on the neutron and proton dripline, respectively. We calculate the lowest four states, $3/2^-$, $1/2^+$, $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$, built on double occupancy in the nuclear $s_{1/2}$ and $p_{1/2}$ valence single-particle states. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method to solve the three-body problem for a frozen nuclear core surrounded by two identical nucleons. The four analogue states in $^{11}$O are obtained with precisely the same interactions as used for the four states in $^{11}$Li, except for addition of t…
During the last few decades, rare isotope beam facilities have provided unique data for studying the properties of nuclides located far from the beta-stability line. Such nuclei are often accompanied by exotic structures and radioactive modes, which represent the forefront of nuclear research. Among them, two-proton (2p) radioactivity is a rare decay mode found in a few highly proton-rich isotopes. The 2p decay lifetimes and properties of emitted protons hold invaluable information regarding the nuclear structures in the presence of a low-lying proton continuum; as such, they have attracted co…
The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z = 6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed $^{A}$N(p,2p)$^{A-1}$C quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 2$^+_1$ state of $^{16,18,20}$C. The experimental findings support the notion …
Recently published data on the Sachs electric form factor by the PRad collaboration (Nature {\bf 575}, 147-151) are analyzed to investigate their consistency with the known proton charge radius from muonic and electronic hydrogen spectroscopy, as well as theoretical predictions from dispersively improved chiral perturbation theory. It is shown that the latter is fully consistent with the data, and pointers are given how future $e-p$ scattering experiments can lead to an improvement of our knowledge of the form factor in the low-momentum-transfer regime.
We report on the observation of excited states in the neutron-deficient phosphorus isotopes $^{26,27,28}$P via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy with both high-efficiency and high-resolution detector arrays. In $^{26}$P, a previously-unobserved level has been identified at 244(3) keV, two new measurements of the astrophysically-important 3/2$^+$ resonance in $^{27}$P have been performed, gamma decays have been assigned to the proton-unbound levels at 2216 keV and 2483 keV in $^{28}$P, and the gamma-ray lineshape method has been used to make the first determination of the lifetimes of the two lowe…
We first predict the ground-state properties of Ca isotopes, using the Gogny-D1S Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (GHFB) with and without the angular momentum projection (AMP). We find that $^{64}$Ca is an even-dripline nucleus and $^{59}$Ca is an odd-dripline nucleus, using $A$ dependence of the one-neutron separation energy $S_{1}$ and the two-neutron separation energy, $S_{2}$. As for $S_{1}$, $S_{2}$ and the binding energies $E_{\rm B}$, our results agree with the experimental data in $^{40-58}$Ca. As other ground-state properties of $^{40-60,62,64}$Ca, we predict charge, proton, neutron, matter ra…
Several states of proton-unbound isotopes $^{30}$Ar and $^{29}$Cl were investigated by measuring their in-flight decay products, $^{28}$S+proton+proton and $^{28}$S+proton, respectively. A refined analysis of $^{28}$S-proton angular correlations indicates that the ground state of $^{30}$Ar is located at $2.45^{+0.05}_{-0.10}$ MeV above the two-proton emission threshold. The theoretical investigation of the $^{30}$Ar ground state decay demonstrates that its mechanism has the transition dynamics with a surprisingly strong sensitivity of the correlation patterns of the decay products to the two-p…
The most-remote from stability isotope $^{31}$K, which is located four atomic mass units beyond the proton drip line, has been observed. It is unbound in respect to three-proton (${3p}$) emission, and its decays have been detected in flight by measuring trajectories of all decay products using micro-strip detectors. The $3p$-emission processes have been studied by means of angular correlations $^{28}$S+3$p$ and the respective decay vertexes. The energies of the previously-unknown ground and excited states of $^{31}$K have been determined. This provides its $3p$ separation-energy value $S_{3p}$…
$β$-decay spectroscopy provides valuable information on exotic nuclei and a stringent test for nuclear theories beyond the stability line. To search for new $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays of $^{25}$Si to investigate the properties of $^{25}$Al excited states. $^{25}$Si $β$ decays were measured by using the Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging system at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The protons and $γ$ rays emitted in the decay were detected simultaneously. A Monte Carlo method was used to model the Doppler broadening of $^{24}$Mg $γ$-ray lines caused by nuclear recoil…
We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV α-particles. By using the present proposed approach the rat…
The structure of $^{35}$P was studied with a one-proton knockout reaction at88~MeV/u from a $^{36}$S projectile beam at NSCL. The $γ$ rays from thedepopulation of excited states in $^{35}$P were detected with GRETINA, whilethe $^{35}$P nuclei were identified event-by-event in the focal plane of theS800 spectrograph. The level scheme of $^{35}$P was deduced up to 7.5 MeV using$γ-γ$ coincidences. The observed levels were attributed to protonremovals from the $sd$-shell and also from the deeply-bound $p\_{1/2}$ orbital. The orbital angular momentum of each state was derived from the comparisonbetw…
After the demonstration of the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy-ion beams, the HypHI Collaboration will next focus on the study of proton- and neutron-rich hypernuclei. The use of a fragment separator for the production and separation of rare isotope beams is a crucial aspect to producing hypernuclei far from the stability line. Precise spectroscopy of exotic hypernuclei is planned to be carried out at the GSI and later at the FAIR facility with the FRS and Super-FRS fragment separators. A systematic study and an optimization analysis were performed in order to determine opt…
The missing mass spectroscopy of $Ξ^{-}$ hypernuclei with the $(K^{-},K^{+})$ reaction is planned to be performed at the J-PARC K1.8 beam line by using a new magnetic spectrometer, Strangeness $-2$ Spectrometer (S-2S). A $Č$cerenkov detector with a radiation medium of pure water (refractive index of 1.33) is designed to be used for on-line proton rejection for a momentum range of 1.2 to 1.6 GeV/$c$ in S-2S. Prototype water $Č$erenkov detectors were developed and tested with positron beams and cosmic rays to estimate their proton-rejection capability. We achieved an average number of photoelect…
Excited states of the $N=32$ nucleus $^{54}$Ti have been studied, via both inverse-kinematics proton scattering and one-neutron knockout from $^{55}$Ti by a liquid hydrogen target, using the GRETINA $γ$-ray tracking array. Inelastic proton-scattering cross sections and deformation lengths have been determined. A low-lying octupole state has been tentatively identified in $^{54}$Ti for the first time. A comparison of $(p,p')$ results on low-energy octupole states in the neutron-rich Ca and Ti isotopes with the results of Random Phase Approximation calculations demonstrates that the observed sys…

Excited states in 13O were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E/A=69.5-MeV 13O beam off of a 9Be target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. For a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave born-approximation (DWBA) calculations of the spin alignment which wa…
The cascading 3.21 MeV and 4.44 MeV electric quadrupole transitions have been observed from the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV excitation energy in $^{12}$C, excited by the $^{12}$C(p,p$^{\prime}$) reaction at 10.7 MeV proton energy. From the proton-$γ$-$γ$ triple coincidence data, a value of ${Γ_{\rm rad}}/Γ=6.2(6) \times 10^{-4}$ was obtained for the radiative branching ratio. Using our results, together with ${Γ_π^{E0}}/Γ$ from Eriksen et al., Phys. Rev. C 102, 024320 and the currently adopted $Γ_π(E0)$ values, the radiative width of the Hoyle state is determined as $Γ_{\rm rad}=5.1(6) \times 10^{…
We present a method to calculate spectroscopic properties of odd-odd nuclei within the framework of the Interacting Boson-Fermion-Fermion Model based on the Gogny energy density functional. The $(β,γ)$-deformation energy surface of the even-even (boson-)core nucleus, spherical single-particle energies and occupation probabilities of the odd neutron and odd proton, are provided by the constrained self-consistent mean-field calculation within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the Gogny-D1M functional. These quantities are used as a microscopic input to fix most of the parameters of the IBF…
