We explore ways to quantify multipartite correlations, in quantum information and in holography. We focus on optimized correlation measures, linear combinations of entropies minimized over all possible purifications of a state that satisfy monotonicity conditions. These contain far more information about correlations than entanglement entropy alone. We present a procedure to derive such quantities, and construct a menagerie of symmetric optimized correlation measures on three parties. These include tripartite generalizations of the entanglement of purification, the squashed entanglement, and the recently introduced Q-correlation and R-correlation. Some correlation measures vanish only on product states, and thus quantify both classical and quantum correlations; others vanish on any separable state, capturing quantum correlations alone. We then use a procedure motivated by the surface-state correspondence to construct holographic duals for the correlation measures as linear combinations of bulk surfaces. The geometry of the surfaces can preserve, partially break, or fully break the symmetry of the correlation measure. The optimal purification is encoded in the locations of certain points, whose locations are fixed by constraints on the areas of combinations of surfaces. This gives a new concrete connection between information theoretic quantities evaluated on a boundary state and detailed geometric properties of its dual.
In this work we generalize the entanglement of purification and its conjectured holographic dual to conditional and multipartite versions of the same, where the optimization defining the entanglement of purification is now optimized in either a constrained way or over multiple parties. We separately derive new constraints on both the conditional entanglement of purification and its conjectured holographic dual object that match, further reinforcing the likelihood of this conjecture. We also show that the multipartite objects we define, despite obeying several of the same inequalities, are not …
Starting from the entanglement wedge of a multipartite mixed state we describe a purification procedure which involves the gluing of several copies. The resulting geometry has non-trivial topology and a single oriented boundary for each original boundary region. In the purified geometry the original multipartite entanglement wedge cross section is mapped to a minimal surface of a particular non-trivial homology class. In contrast each original bipartite entanglement wedge cross section is mapped to the minimal wormhole throat around each boundary. Using the bit thread formalism we show how max…
We consider a class of correlation measures for quantum states called optimized correlation measures, defined as a minimization of a linear combination of von Neumann entropies over purifications of a given state. Examples include the entanglement of purification $E_P$ and squashed entanglement $E_{\text{sq}}$. We show that when evaluating such measures on ``nice" holographic states in the large-$N$ limit, the optimal purification has a semi-classical geometric dual. We then apply this result to confirm several holographic dual proposals, including the $n$-party squashed entanglement. Moreover…

Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are those multipartite quantum states that carry absolute maximum entanglement in all possible partitions. AME states are known to play a relevant role in multipartite teleportation, in quantum secret sharing and they provide the basis novel tensor networks related to holography. We present alternative constructions of AME states and show their link with combinatorial designs. We also analyze a key property of AME, namely their relation to tensors that can be understood as unitary transformations in every of its bi-partitions. We call this property m…

We study the complexity of Gaussian mixed states in a free scalar field theory using the 'purification complexity'. The latter is defined as the lowest value of the circuit complexity, optimized over all possible purifications of a given mixed state. We argue that the optimal purifications only contain the essential number of ancillary degrees of freedom necessary in order to purify the mixed state. We also introduce the concept of 'mode-by-mode purifications' where each mode in the mixed state is purified separately and examine the extent to which such purifications are optimal. We explore th…
We develop a framework for the derivation of new information theoretic quantities which are natural from a holographic perspective. We demonstrate the utility of our techniques by deriving the tripartite information (the quantity associated to monogamy of mutual information) using a set of abstract arguments involving bulk extremal surfaces. Our arguments rely on formal manipulations of surfaces and not on local surgery or explicit computation of entropies through the holographic entanglement entropy prescriptions. As an application, we show how to derive a family of similar information quanti…
We develop a convenient framework for characterizing multipartite entanglement in composite systems, based on relations between entropies of various subsystems. This continues the program initiated in arXiv:1808.07871, of using holography to effectively recast the geometric problem into an algebraic one. We prove that, for an arbitrary number of parties, our procedure identifies a finite set of entropic information quantities that we conveniently represent geometrically in the form of an arrangement of hyperplanes. This leads us to define the holographic entropy arrangement, whose algebraic an…
We show that the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) can become larger than the quantum entanglement measures such as the entanglement of formation in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then discuss a series of holographic duals to the optimized correlation measures, finding a novel geometrical measure of correlation, the \textit{entanglement wedge mutual information} (EWMI), as the dual of the $Q$-correlation. We prove that the EWMI satisfies the properties of the $Q$-correlation as well as the strong superadditivity, and that it can become larger than the entanglement measures. These results…
We propose a multi-boundary generalization of thermofield double states (TFD) of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) and show, through a conformal map to the complex plane, that they are closely related to multi-point correlation functions. We then also describe how to approximately realize these multi-boundary TFD states numerically on the lattice, starting from a critical quantum spin chain Hamiltonian. In addition, finite size corrections on the lattice are seen to be significantly reduced by the use of \textit{smoothers} -- numerically optimized unitary transformations that loca…
The reflected entropy $S_R(A:B)$ of a density matrix $ρ_{AB}$ is a bipartite correlation measure lower-bounded by the quantum mutual information $I(A:B)$. In holographic states satisfying the quantum extremal surface formula, where the reflected entropy is related to the area of the entanglement wedge cross-section, there is often an order-$N^2$ gap between $S_R$ and $I$. We provide an information-theoretic interpretation of this gap by observing that $S_R - I$ is related to the fidelity of a particular Markov recovery problem that is impossible in any state whose entanglement wedge cross-sect…
