Intrigued by the extended red-giant clump (RC) stretching across the colour-magnitude diagram of the stars in a 50x50 pc^2 region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) containing the clusters NGC 1938 and NGC 1939, we have studied the stellar populations to learn about the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in this area. The extended RC is caused by a large and uneven amount of extinction across the field. Its slope reveals anomalous extinction properties, with Av/E(B-V)=4.3, indicating the presence of an additional grey component in the optical contributing about 30% of the total extinction in the field and requiring big grains to be about twice as abundant as in the diffuse ISM. This appears to be consistent with the amount of big grains injected into the surrounding ISM by the about 70 SNII explosions estimated to have occurred during the lifetime of the ~120 Myr old NGC 1938. Although this cluster appears today relatively small and would be hard to detect beyond the distance of M 31, with an estimated initial mass of ~4800 Msun NGC 1938 appears to have seriously altered the extinction properties in a wide area. This has important implications for the interpretation of luminosities and masses of star-forming galaxies, both nearby and in the early universe.
We report on the extinction properties in the fields around the clusters NGC 1854, NGC 1856, and NGC 1858 in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The colour-magnitude diagrams of the stars in all these regions show an elongated red giant clump that reveals a variable amount of extinction across these fields, ranging from Av~0.2 to Av~1.9, including Galactic foreground extinction. The extinction properties nonetheless are remarkably uniform. The slope of the reddening vectors measured in the (V-I,V) and (B-I,B) colour-magnitude planes is fully in line with the Av/E(B-V)~5.5 value found in the…
Interstellar extinction is investigated in a 1.5 square degree area in the direction of the reflection nebula NGC 7023 at l = 104.1 deg, b = +14.2 deg. The study is based on photometric classification and the determination of interstellar extinctions and distances of 480 stars down to V = 16.5 mag from photometry in the Vilnius seven-color system published in Paper I (2008). The investigated area is divided into five smaller subareas with slightly different dependence of the extinction on distance. The distribution of reddened stars is in accordance with the presence of two dust clouds at 282 …
Using photometric and spectroscopic data of Supernova (SN) 2012cu, a fairly reddened type Ia supernova, we derived its color excess curves and probed the dust extinction in its host galaxy, NGC 4772. In order to derive the extinction as a function of wavelength (i.e., $A_λ$), we model the color excess curves of SN 2012cu in terms of dust models consisting of silicate and carbonaceous (graphite or amorphous carbon) dust. The modeled extinction law towards SN 2012cu extends flatly to the far-ultraviolet (UV) bands, which is much flatter than those of the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and the …
The interstellar extinction law in twenty open star clusters namely Berkeley 7, Collinder 69, Hogg 10, NGC 2362, Czernik 43, NGC 6530, NGC 6871, Bochum 10, Haffner 18, IC 4996, NGC 2384, NGC 6193, NGC 6618, NGC 7160, Collinder 232, Haffner 19, NGC 2401, NGC 6231, NGC 6823 and NGC 7380 have been studied in the optical and near-IR wavelength ranges. The difference between maximum and minimum values of E(B-V) indicates the presence of non-uniform extinction in all the clusters except Collinder 69, NGC 2362 and NGC 2384. The colour excess ratios are consistent with a normal extinction law for the …
We used optical images acquired with the UVIS channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 on board of the Hubble Space Telescope to construct the first high-resolution extinction map in the direction of NGC 6440, a globular cluster located in the bulge of our Galaxy. The map has a spatial resolution of 0.5" over a rectangular region of about 160" X 240" around the cluster center, with the long side in the North-West/South-East direction. We found that the absorption clouds show patchy and filamentary sub-structures with extinction variations as large as $δ{\rm E}(B-V)\sim0.5$ mag. We also performed a f…
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,288, NGC\,362, and NGC\,6218 (M12). We utilize a lot of photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of data from the {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, unWISE, Pan-STARRS, and other photometric sources. In our isochrone fitting we use theoretical models and isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones for $α$-enhanced abundance [$α$/Fe]$=+0.40$, different helium abundances, and a metallicity of about [Fe/H]$=-1.3$ adopted from the literatur…
We use photometry in the F220W, F250W, F330W, F435W filters from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys and photometry in the F555W, F675W, and F814W filters from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to derive individual stellar reddenings and extinctions for stars in the HD 97950 cluster in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The mean line-of-sight reddening for about a hundred main-sequence member stars inside the cluster is $E(F435W-F555W)=1.33\pm0.12$ mag. After correcting for foreground reddening, the total to selective extinction rati…
The large field and wavelength range of MUSE is well suited to mapping Galactic planetary nebulae (PN). The bright PN NGC 7009 was observed with MUSE on the VLT during the Science Verification of the instrument in seeing of 0.6". Emission line maps in hydrogen Balmer and Paschen lines were formed from analysis of the MUSE cubes. The measured electron temperature and density from the MUSE cube were employed to predict the theoretical hydrogen line ratios and map the extinction distribution across the nebula. After correction for the interstellar extinction to NGC 7009, the internal dust-to-gas …

We present BVRI photometry of supernova (SN) 2016coj in NGC 4125 from $9$ days before to $57$ days after its $B$-band maximum light. Our light curves and color curves suggest that this event belongs to the "normal" class of type Ia SNe, with a decline rate parameter $Δm_{15}(B) = 1.32 \pm 0.10$, and that it suffers little extinction. Adopting a distance modulus to its host galaxy of $(m - M) = 31.89$ mag, we compute extinction-corrected peak absolute magnitudes of $M_B = -19.01$, $M_V = -19.05$, $M_R = -19.03$, and $M_I = -18.79$. The explosion occurred close enough to the nucleus of NGC 4125 …
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5). We utilise 29 photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of the data from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope}, {\it Gaia} DR2, {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and other photometric data. In our isochrone fitting we use the PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code, the MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks, the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program, and a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones both for the solar-scaled and enhanced He a…
The results of medium-band photometry of 1037 stars in the area of old open cluster NGC 7142 down to V = 20.1 mag in the Vilnius seven-colour system are presented. Photometric results are used to classify in spectral and luminosity classes about 80 percent of stars down to V = 18.5 mag, to identify cluster members, to determine the main cluster parameters and to investigate the interstellar extinction in this direction. The average extinction A_V of the cluster is about 1.1 mag, E(B-V) = 0.35, and its distance is 2.3 kpc (the distance modulus 11.8 mag). The age of the cluster, 3.0 Gyr, is esti…
Dust polarization observations at optical wavelengths help to understand the dust grain properties and trace the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field. In this study, we make use of the $I$-band polarization data acquired from AIMPOL along with the distances ($d$) and extinction ($A_{V}$) data to study the variation of polarization fraction ($P$) as a function of $A_{V}$ and $d$ towards the star-forming region, NGC 1893. We employ a broken power-law fit and Bayesian analysis on extinction ($A_{V}$) versus polarization efficiency ($P$/$A_{V}$) and distance ($d$) versus rate of polari…
We present a revised distance to the nearby galaxy NGC6822 using a new multi-band fit to both previously published and new optical, near- and mid-infrared data for Cepheid variables. The new data presented in this study include multi-epoch observations obtained in 3.6\um and 4.5\um with the \emph{Spitzer Space Telescope} taken for the Carnegie Hubble Program. We also present new observations in J, H and \kswith FourStar on the Magellan Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We determine mean magnitudes and present new period-luminosity relations in V, I, J, H, \ks, IRAC 3.6\um and 4.5\um…
We perform a spectroscopic survey of the foreground population in Orion A with MMT/Hectospec. We use these data, along with archival spectroscopic data and photometric data, to derive spectral types, extinction values, and masses for 691 stars. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope data, we characterize the disk properties of these sources. We identify 37 new transition disk (TD) objects, one globally depleted disk candidate, and 7 probable young debris disks. We discover an object with a mass less than 0.018-0.030 M$_{\odot}$, which harbors a flaring disk. Using the H$α$ emission line, we charact…
Highly reddened type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) with low total-to-selective visual extinction ratio values, $R_V$, also show peculiar linear polarization wavelength dependencies with peak polarizations at short wavelengths ($λ_{max} \lesssim 0.4 μm$). It is not clear why sightlines to SNe Ia display such different continuum polarization profiles from interstellar sightlines in the Milky Way with similar $R_V$ values. We investigate polarization profiles of a sample of Galactic stars with low $R_V$ values, along anomalous extinction sightlines, with the aim to find similarities to the polarization …
We have obtained optical and near-infrared spectra of candidate members of the star-forming clusters IC 348 and NGC 1333. We classify 100 and 42 candidates as new members of the clusters, respectively, which brings the total numbers of known members to 478 and 203. We also have performed spectroscopy on a large majority of the previously known members of NGC 1333 in order to provide spectral classifications that are measured with the same scheme that has been applied to IC 348 in previous studies. The new census of members is nearly complete for Ks<16.8 at Aj<1.5 in IC 348 and for Ks<16.2 at A…
In this paper we present extinction properties of interstellar dust in a prominent dust lane galaxy NGC 4370 based on the optical broad band (BVRI) imaging observations taken from the Himalaya Chandra Telescope (HCT), Hanle and the near-IR (J,H,K$_s$) images taken from the 2MASS archive. NGC 4370 belongs to the Virgo cluster (VCC 0758) and form a non-interactive pair with NGC 4365 at 10$\arcmin$. NGC 4370 hosts a prominent dust lane running parallel to its optical major axis and is extended almost up to 1\arcmin. The extinction curve derived for NGC 4370 is found to run parallel to Galactic ex…
We present Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, with simultaneous coverage from 0.85 - 2.5 $μ$m. Several spatially-extended emission lines are detected for the first time, both in the obscured and unobscured portion of the optical narrow line region (NLR), allowing us to assess the combined effects of the central continuum source, outflowing gas and shocks generated by the radio jet on the central 280 pc gas. The HI and [FeII] lines allow us to map the extinction affecting the NLR. We found that the nuclear region is heavily obscured, with E(B-V) ~1.9 mag. To the NE of t…
We determine the extinction law through Cep OB3b, a young cluster of 3000 stars undergoing gas dispersal. The extinction is measured toward 76 background K giants identified with MMT/Hectospec spectra. Color excess ratios were determined toward each of the giants using $V$ and $R$ photometry from the literature, $g$,$r$,$i$ and $z$ photometry from SDSS and $J$, $H$, and $K_{s}$ photometry from 2MASS. These color excess ratios were the used to construct the extinction law through the dusty material associated with Cep OB3b. The extinction law through Cep OB3b is intermediate between the $R_{V} …
We present and analyze spatially-resolved maps for the observed $V$- and $g$-band to 3.6$μ$m flux ratios and the inferred dust extinction values, $A_V$, for a sample of 257 nearby NGC and IC galaxies. Flux ratio maps are constructed using PSF-matched mosaics of SDSS $g$- and $r$-band images and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6$μ$m mosaics, with all pixels contaminated by foreground stars or background objects masked out. By applying the $β_V$ method (Tamura et al. 2009, 2010), which was recently calibrated as a function of redshift and morphological type by Kim, Jansen, & Windhorst (2017), dust extinction map…
The large majority of extinction sight lines in our Galaxy obey a simple relation depending on one parameter, the total-to-selective extinction coefficient, Rv. Different values of Rv are able to match the whole extinction curve through different environments so characterizing normal extinction curves. In this paper more than sixty curves with large ultraviolet deviations from their best-fit one parameter curve are analyzed. These curves are fitted with dust models to shed light into the properties of the grains, the processes affecting them, and their relations with the environmental characte…
Massive, O and early B-type (OB) stars remain incompletely catalogued in the nearby Galaxy due to high extinction, bright visible and infrared nebular emission in H II regions, and high field star contamination. These difficulties are alleviated by restricting the search to stars with X-ray emission. Using the X-ray point sources from the Massive Young star-forming complex Study in Infrared and X-rays (MYStIX) survey of OB-dominated regions, we identify 98 MYStIX candidate OB (MOBc) stars by fitting their 1-8 micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with reddened stellar atmosphere models. …
We identify and phase a sample of 81 Cepheids in the maser-host galaxy NGC 4258 using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), and obtain calibrated mean magnitudes in up to 4 filters for a subset of 43 Cepheids using archival HST data. We employ 3 models to study the systematic effects of extinction, the assumed extinction law, and metallicity on the Cepheid distance to NGC 4258. We find a correction to the Cepheid colors consistent with a grayer extinction law in NGC 4258 compared to the Milky Way ($R_V =4.9$), although we believe this is indicative of other systematic effects. If we combine our…
We explore the gas morphology and excitation mechanisms of the ionization cones of the Type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Near-IR and optical data from the SINFONI and MUSE IFUs on the VLT are combined with $HST$ optical images, $Chandra$ X-ray data and VLA radio observations. The complex nuclear structure has a star-forming (SF) ring with a diameter of 2 kpc. A radio jet impacts on the ISM at about 200 pc from the nucleus, with the SN remnants in the SF ring also present. Emission-line ratios of [Fe II] and H II show heavy extinction towards the nucleus, moderate extinction in the SF ring and r…

We present a study of the dust-to-gas ratios in five nearby galaxies NGC 628 (M74), NGC 6503, NGC 7793, UGC 5139 (Holmberg I), and UGC 4305 (Holmberg II). Using Hubble Space Telescope broad band WFC3/UVIS UV and optical images from the Treasury program LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey) combined with archival HST/ACS data, we correct thousands of individual stars for extinction across these five galaxies using an isochrone-matching (reddening-free Q) method. We generate extinction maps for each galaxy from the individual stellar extinctions using both adaptive and fixed resolution techniqu…
Dust plays a central role in the unification theory of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, little is known about the nature (e.g., size, composition) of the dust which forms a torus around the AGN. In this Letter we report a systematic exploration of the optical extinction (A_V) and the silicate absorption optical depth (Δ\tau9.7) of 110 type 2 AGNs. We derive A_V from the Balmer decrement based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, and Δ\tau9.7 from the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph data. We find that with a mean ratio of A_V/Δ\tau9.7 ~ 5.5, the optical-to-silicate extinction ratios of th…
We discuss the nature of a discrete, compact radio source (NGC 4725 B) located $\approx$1.9 kpc from the nucleus in the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 4725, which we believe to be a new detection of extragalactic Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). Based on detections at 3, 15, 22, 33, and 44 GHz, NGC 4725 B is a $μ$Jy radio source peaking at $\approx$33 GHz. While the source is not identified in $BVRI$ photometry, we detect counterparts in the mid-infrared $Spitzer$/IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 $μ$m) that appear to be associated with dust emission in the central region of NGC 4725. Conseque…
We analyze the X-ray scattering halos around three Galactic Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) in order to constrain the distance and the optical extinction of each source. We obtain surface brightness distributions from EPIC-pn data obtained with XMM-Newton, compare the profiles of different sources, and fit them with a model based on the standard theory of X-ray scattering by dust grains, both for a uniform distribution of dust along the line of sight, and for dust distributions constrained by previous measurements. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that for all three sources, the uniform distribut…
We present deep HI observations of the moderately inclined spiral galaxy, NGC 2997. The goal of these observations was to search for HI clouds in the vicinity of NGC 2997 analogous to the high velocity clouds of the Milky Way and gain insight into their origins. We find evidence for the presence of a galactic fountain as well as the accretion of intragalactic material, however we do not identify any large clouds of HI far from the disk of the galaxy. NGC 2997 has a thick, lagging HI disk that is modeled with a vertical velocity gradient of 18-31 km/s/kpc. Anomalous velocity HI clouds with mass…
Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
During the 2014 HST/Swift and ground-based multi-wavelength monitoring campaign of NGC 5548 (AGN STORM), the UV-optical broad emission lines exhibited anomalous, decorrelated behaviour relative to the far-UV continuum flux variability. Here, we use key diagnostic emission lines (Ly-alpha and He II) for this campaign to infer a proxy for the all important, variable driving EUV continuum incident upon BLR clouds. The inferred driving continuum provides a crucial step towards the recovery of the broad emission line response functions in this AGN. In particular, the ionising continuum seen by the …
The dust cloud TGU H645 P2 and embedded in it young open cluster NGC 7129 are investigated using the results of medium-band photometry of 159 stars in the Vilnius seven-colour system down to V = 18.8 mag. The photometric data were used to classify about 50 percent of the measured stars in spectral and luminosity classes. The extinction A_V vs. distance diagram for the 20x20 arcmin area is plotted for 155 stars with two-dimensional classification from the present and the previous catalogues. The extinction values found range between 0.6 and 3.4 mag. However, some red giants, located in the dire…
A study is presented of HI line observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 3521 observed with the VLA as part of The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey. Clearly evident in the HI data cube is the presence of an anomalous HI component that is both diffuse and slow-rotating. The data cube is dynamically decomposed into regular and anomalous HI components. A mass of M_HI=1.5 x 10^9 Msun is estimated for the anomalous HI - 20 per cent of the total HI mass. Standard HI data products and rotation curves are produced for each dynamical component. In terms of circular rotation speed, the anomalous HI is found …
The first detection of the silicate absorption feature in AGNs was made at 9.7 micrometer for the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 over 30 years ago, indicating the presence of a large column of silicate dust in the line-of-sight to the nucleus. It is now well recognized that type 2 AGNs exhibit prominent silicate absorption bands, while the silicate bands of type 1 AGNs appear in emission. More recently, using the Mid-Infrared Interferometric Instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, Jaffe et al. (2004) by the first time spatially resolved the parsec-sized dust torus around…
NGC 5548 has been intensively monitored by the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping collaboration. Approximately after half of the light curves, the correlation between the broad emission lines and the lag-corrected ultraviolet continua becomes weak. This anomalous behavior is accompanied by an increase of soft X-ray emission. We propose a simple model to understand this anomalous behavior, i.e., the corona might fall down, thereby increasing the covering fraction of the inner disk. Therefore, X-ray and extreme ultraviolet emission suffer from spectral variations. The ultravio…
We present a Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) map of H2 emission from the nearby galaxy NGC 4258 (Messier 106). The H2 emission comes from 9.4E6 Msun of warm molecular hydrogen heated to 240-1040 K in the inner anomalous arms, a signature of jet interaction with the galaxy disk. The spectrum is that of a molecular hydrogen emission galaxy (MOHEG), with a large ratio of H2 over 7.7 micron PAH emission (0.37), characteristic of shocked molecular gas. We find close spatial correspondence between the H2 and CO emission from the anomalous arms. Our estimate of cold molecular gas mass based on CO…
Using 1 cm and 3 mm CARMA and 2 mm GISMO observations, we follow up the first extragalactic detection of anomalous microwave emission (AME) reported by Murphy et al. 2010 in an extranuclear region (Enuc. 4) of the nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946. We find the spectral shape and peak frequency of AME in this region to be consistent with models of spinning dust emission. However, the strength of the emission far exceeds the Galactic AME emissivity given the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in that region. Using our galaxy-wide 1 cm map (21" resolution), we identify a tot…
We perform a deep survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 to construct its planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We aim to derive the distance using the PNLF and to probe the characteristics of the most luminous PNe. We analyse 44 fields observed with MUSE at the VLT, covering a total area of $\sim11$ kpc$^2$. We find [OIII]5007 sources using the differential emission line filter (DELF) technique. We identify PNe through spectral classification using the aid of the BPT-diagram. The PNLF distance is derived using the maximum likelihood estimation technique. For the…
We describe and constrain the origins of ISM structures likely created by ongoing ICM ram pressure stripping in two Virgo Cluster spirals, NGC 4522 and NGC 4402, using HST BVI images of dust extinction and stars, as well as supplementary HI, Halpha, and radio continuum images. This is the highest-resolution study to date of the physical processes that occur during an ICM-ISM ram pressure stripping interaction, ram pressure stripping's effects on the multi-phase, multi-density ISM, and the formation and evolution of ram-pressure-stripped tails. In dust extinction, we view the leading side of NG…
We report on the Ka-band (26-40 GHz) emission properties for 10 star-forming regions in the nearby galaxy NGC 6946. From a radio spectral decomposition, we find that the 33 GHz flux densities are typically dominated by thermal (free-free) radiation. However, we also detect excess Ka-band emission for an outer-disk star-forming region relative to what is expected given existing radio, submillimeter, and infrared data. Among the 10 targeted regions, measurable excess emission at 33 GHz is detected for half of them, but in only one region is the excess found to be statistically significant ($\app…
There are known differences between the physical properties of HII and diffuse ionized gas (DIG), but most of the studied regions in the literature are relatively bright. We compiled a faint sample of 390 HII regions with median $\log_{10}Hα$=34.7 in the spiral galaxy NGC300, derived their physical properties in terms of metallicity, density, extinction, and kinematics, and performed a comparative analysis of the properties of the DIG. We used MUSE data of nine fields in NGC300, covering a galactocentric distance of zero to ~450 arcsec (~4 projected kpc), including spiral arm and inter-arm reg…
We observed four nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 3627, NGC 4254, NGC 4736 and NGC 5055) in the K band with the 64-m Sardinia Radio Telescope, with the aim of detecting the Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME), a radiation component presumably due to spinning dust grains, observed so far in the Milky Way and in a handful of other galaxies only (most notably, M 31). We mapped the galaxies at 18.6 and 24.6 GHz and studied their global photometry together with other radio-continuum data from the literature, in order to find AME as emission in excess of the synchrotron and thermal components. We only fin…
Abridged: We present a detailed investigation of the morphological distribution and level of star formation and dust obscuration in the nearby tidally distorted galaxy NGC2442. Spitzer images in the IR at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0um, and 24um and GALEX images at 1500Å and 2300Å allow us to resolve the galaxy on scales between 240-600pc. We supplement these with archival data in the B, J, H, and K bands. We use the 8um, 24um and FUV (1500Å) emission to study the star formation rate (SFR). We find that globally, these tracers of star formation give a range of results of ~6-11\msun/yr, with the dust-cor…
Correction of Type Ia Supernova brightnesses for extinction by dust has proven to be a vexing problem. Here we study the dust foreground to the highly reddened SN 2012cu, which is projected onto a dust lane in the galaxy NGC 4772. The analysis is based on multi-epoch, spectrophotometric observations spanning 3,300 - 9,200 Å, obtained by the Nearby Supernova Factory. Phase-matched comparison of the spectroscopically twinned SN 2012cu and SN 2011fe across 10 epochs results in the best-fit color excess of (E(B-V), RMS) = (1.00, 0.03) and total-to-selective extinction ratio of (RV , RMS) = (2.95, …
The spatial variations of stellar population properties within a galaxy are intimately related to their formation process. Therefore, spatially resolved studies of galaxies are essential to uncover their formation and assembly. The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) is a dedicated multi-filter designed to observed ~8500 deg2 using twelve narrow-, intermediate- and broad-band filters in the optical range. In this study, we test the potential of the multi-filter observation carried out with J-PLUS to investigate the properties of spatially-resolved nearby galaxies. We present …
We use new deep 21 cm HI observations of the moderately inclined galaxy NGC 4559 in the HALOGAS survey to investigate the properties of extra-planar gas. We use TiRiFiC to construct simulated data cubes to match the HI observations. We find that a thick disk component of scale height $\sim\,2\,\mathrm{kpc}$, characterized by a negative vertical gradient in its rotation velocity (lag) of $\sim13 \pm 5$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ is an adequate fit to extra-planar gas features. The tilted ring models also present evidence for a decrease in the magnitude of the lag outside of $R_{25}$, and a radial i…
As part of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, we present a detailed investigation of the internal kinematics of NGC 5986. The analysis is based on about 300 individual radial velocities of stars located at various distances from the cluster center, up to 300 arcseconds (about 4 half-mass radii). Our analysis reveals the presence of a solid-body rotation extending from the cluster center to the outermost regions probed by the data, and a velocity dispersion profile initially declining with the distance from the cluster's center, but flattening a…
