This Erratum modifies the original article entitled "Primordial black hole origin for thermal gamma ray bursts", which was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 506, 806 (2021).
This erratum addresses an error in the text of Lo et al. (2013) and more importantly corrects a computational error that was made in all previously published relativistic computations of absolute pulse waveform fluxes produced by hot spots on rotating stars that followed the radiation forward in time from the star to the observer. These computations used an incorrect expression for the differential emitting area on the stellar surface, as measured in the comoving frame. This erratum explains this error, lists all the published papers that contain results affected by this error, and summarizes …
If primordial black holes with masses of $10^{25}\,\mbox{g}\gtrsim m \gtrsim 10^{17}\,\mbox{g}$ constitute a non-negligible fraction of the galactic dark-matter haloes, their existence should have observable consequences: they necessarily collide with galactic neutron stars, nest in their centers and accrete the dense matter, eventually converting them to neutron-star mass black holes while releasing the neutron-star magnetic field energy. Such processes may explain the fast radio bursts phenomenology, in particular their millisecond durations, large luminosities ${\sim}10^{43}$ erg/s, high ra…
The detection of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the solar neighborhood would have very important implications for GRB phenomenology. The leading theories for cosmological GRBs would not be able to explain such events. The final bursts of evaporating Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), however, would be a natural explanation for local GRBs. We present a novel technique that can constrain the distance to gamma-ray bursts using detections from widely separated, non-imaging spacecraft. This method can determine the actual distance to the burst if it is local. We applied this method to constrain distances t…
Data collected by the H.E.S.S. array between 2004 and 2012 have been used to search for photon bursts from primordial black hole explosions. Bursts were searched for in a 30 second time-window. The duration of the search window has been optimized to increase the burst signal while keeping the statistical background low. No evidence for a burst signal was found. Preliminary upper limits on the local rate of PBH explosions of $1.4\times 10^{4} {pc}^{-3} {yr}^{-1}$ have been obtained, which improve previously published limits by almost an order of magnitude
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are black holes that may have been created in the early Universe and could be as large as supermassive black holes or as small as the Planck scale. It is believed that a black hole has a temperature inversely proportional to its mass and will thermally emit all species of fundamental particles. PBHs with initial masses of 5.0 x 10^14 g should be expiring today with bursts of high-energy gamma radiation in the GeV/TeV energy range. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is sensitive to the high end of the PBH gamma-ray burst spectrum. Due to its large…
Primordial black holes are black holes that may have formed from density fluctuations in the early universe. It has been theorized that black holes slowly evaporate. If primordial black holes of initial mass of $10^{14}$g were formed, their evaporation would end in this epoch, in a bright burst of very-high-energy gamma rays. A Cherenkov telescope experiment like VERITAS can look for these primordial black hole bursts in its archival data, constraining the rate-density of their final evaporation. New analysis techniques and search methodologies were used and will be presented here, leading to …
The abundance of primordial black holes is currently significantly constrained in a wide range of masses. The weakest limits are established for the small mass objects, where the small intensity of the associated physical phenomenon provides a challenge for current experiments. We used gamma- ray bursts with known redshifts detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) to search for the femtolensing effects caused by compact objects. The lack of femtolensing detection in the GBM data provides new evidence that primordial black holes in the mass range 5 \times 10^{17} - 10^{20} g do not c…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are of interest in many cosmological contexts. PBHs lighter than about 1012 kg are predicted to be directly detectable by their Hawking radiation. This radiation should produce both a diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background from the cosmologically-averaged distribution of PBHs and gamma-ray burst signals from individual light black holes. The Fermi, Milagro, Veritas, HESS and HAWC observatories, in combination with new burst recognition methodologies, offer the greatest sensitivity for the detection of such black holes or placing limits on their existence.
Many early universe theories predict the creation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). PBHs could have masses ranging from the Planck mass to 10^5 solar masses or higher depending on the size of the universe at formation. A Black Hole (BH) has a Hawking temperature which is inversely proportional to its mass. Hence a sufficiently small BH will quasi-thermally radiate particles at an ever-increasing rate as emission lowers its mass and raises its temperature. The final moments of this evaporation phase should be explosive and its description is dependent on the particle physics model. In this work…
Many early universe theories predict the creation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). The PBHs could have masses ranging from the Planck mass to 10^5 solar masses or higher depending on the formation scenario. Hawking showed that any Black Hole (BH) has a temperature which is inversely proportional to its mass. Hence a sufficiently small BH will thermodynamically radiate particles at an ever-increasing rate, continually decreasing its mass and raising its temperature. The final moments of this evaporation phase should be explosive. In this work, we investigate the final few seconds of the BH bur…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are one of the most interesting nonparticle dark matter (DM) candidates. They may explain all the DM content in the Universe in the mass regime from about $10^{-14}M_{\odot}$ to $10^{-11}M_{\odot}$. We study PBHs as the source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) via magnetic reconnection in the event of collisions between them and neutron stars (NSs) in galaxies. We investigate the energy loss of PBHs during PBH-NS encounters to model their capture by NSs. To an order-of-magnitude estimation, we conclude that the parameter space of PBHs being all DM is accidentally consis…
The interaction of an asteroid-mass primordial black hole (PBH) with a slowly-rotating neutron star (NS) can lead to detectable gamma-ray emission via modern observatories like Fermi-LAT or e-ASTROGRAM. Depending on the specific PBH relativistic orbit in the NS Schwarschild spacetime and the relative orientation of this binary system with respect to Earth, the PBH Hawking radiation will show a characteristic temperature profile over time. Essentially, a moderate heating behaviour (or even a progressive and constant cooling phase) is found for the majority of the event, followed by a sudden and…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may have been created in the early Universe, are predicted to be detectable by their Hawking radiation. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observatory offers increased sensitivity to the gamma-ray bursts produced by PBHs with an initial mass of $\sim 5\times 10^{14}$ g expiring today. PBHs are candidate progenitors of unidentified Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) that lack X-ray afterglow. We propose spectral lag, which is the temporal delay between the high and low energy pulses, as an efficient method to identify PBH evaporation events with the Fermi Large Area T…
We propose several novel scenarios how capture of small sublunar-mass primordial black holes (PBHs) by compact stars, white dwarfs or neutron stars, can lead to distinct short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) as well as microquasars (MQs). In addition to providing new signatures, relativistic jets from these systems will accelerate positrons to high energies. We find that if PBHs constitute a sizable fraction of DM, they can significantly contribute to the excess observed in the positron flux by the Pamela, the AMS-02 and the Fermi-LAT experiments. Our proposal combines the beneficial features of astr…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) created early in the universe are dark matter candidates. One method of detecting these PBHs is through their Hawking radiation. PBHs created with an initial mass of 5.0 x 10^14 g should be evaporating today with bursts of high-energy particles, including gamma radiation in the GeV - TeV energy range. The Milagro high energy observatory, which operated from 2000 to 2008, is sensitive to the high end of the PBH evaporation gamma ray spectrum. Due to its large field-of-view, more than 90% duty cycle and sensitivity up to 100 TeV gamma rays, the Milagro observatory i…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may have been created in the early Universe, are predicted to be detectable by their Hawking radiation. PBHs with an initial mass of 5.0 * 10^14 g should be expiring today with a burst of high energy particles. Evaporating PBHs in the solar neighborhood are candidate Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) progenitors. We propose spectral lag, which is the temporal delay between the high energy photon pulse and the low energy photon pulse, as a possible method to detect PBH evaporation events with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Observatory.
Following LIGO results of intermediate mass black holes mergers, the idea that dark matter is composed of Primordial Black Boles (PBH), made a recent comeback. PBHs might be formed in the early Universe through a variety of mechanisms, best known being the gravitational collapse of overdense regions due to density fluctuations. It's widely accepted that black hole loose there mass over time through the Hawking radiation process. Since the particle emission rate increases with black hole temperature, PBH evaporation is a runaway process that eventually leads to a violent explosion. It has been …
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) represent an exciting frontier in the study of gravitational lensing, due to their brightness, extragalactic nature, and the compact, coherent characteristics of their emission. In a companion work [Kader, Leung+2022], we use a novel interferometric method to search for gravitationally lensed FRBs in the time domain using bursts detected by CHIME/FRB. There, we dechannelize and autocorrelate electric field data at a time resolution of 1.25 ns. This enables a search for FRBs whose emission is coherently deflected by gravitational lensing around a foreground compact obje…
We describe in detail gravitational wave bursts from Primordial Black Hole (PBH) hyperbolic encounters. The bursts are one-time events, with the bulk of the released energy happening during the closest approach, which can be emitted in frequencies that could be within the range of both LIGO (10-1000Hz) and LISA ($10^{-6}-1$ Hz). Furthermore, we correct the results for the power spectrum of hyperbolic encounters found in the literature and present new exact and approximate expressions for the peak frequency of the emission. Note that these GW bursts from hyperbolic encounters between PBH are co…
We investigate the effects of primordial non-Gaussianities in the primordial Universe on the baryonic structure formation process. By relating the cosmic star formation rate in Gaussian and non-Gaussian scenarios to the detectability of high-redshift sources of reionization, we derive the expected Gamma-Ray Burst rate in the different models. We find that counts of high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts can be used as cosmological probes of non-Gaussianities and that they are suitable candidates to distinguish non-Gaussian effects at early epochs.
In this paper we propose the model that the coalescence of primordial black holes (PBHs) binaries with equal mass $M \sim 10^{28}$g can emit luminous gigahertz (GHz) radio transient, which may be candidate sources for the observed fast radio bursts (FRBs), if at least one black hole holds appropriate amount of net electric charge $Q$. Using a dimensionless quantity for the charge $q = Q/\sqrt{G}M$, our analyses infer that $q\sim O(10^{-4.5})$ can explain the FRBs with released energy of order $O(10^{40}) {\rm ergs}$. With the current sample of FRBs and assuming a distribution of charge $ϕ(q)$ …
We discuss a very peculiar subgroup of gamma-ray bursts among the BATSE sources. These bursts are very short ($T_{90} \le $0.1 s), hard, and came predominantly from a restricted direction of the sky (close to the Galactic anti-center). We analyze their arrival times and possible correlations, as well as the profiles of individual bursts. We find no peculiarities in the arrival times of Very Short Bursts (VSBs) despite their highly non-uniform spatial distribution. There is no dependence in the burst shapes on location. Bursts coming both from the burst-enhancement Galactic Anticenter region an…
Strong lensing of Fast Radio Bursts (FBRs) has been proposed as a relatively clean probe of primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter. Recently, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) published a first catalog of 536 FRBs, 62 of which are from repeating sources. In light of this new data, we re-examine the prospects to constrain the abundance of PBHs via FRBs. Extending previous forecasts, we calculate a PBH dark matter bound using the intrinsic burst width and a calibrated flux-ratio threshold per FRB. In addition, we take into account the uncertainty in the relation between…
It was shown by (Nakamura et al. 1997), (Ioka et al. 1998), and (Sasaki et al. 2016) that primordial black holes (PBHs) binaries can form effectively at the cosmological stage of radiation dominance, and the merge of the PBHs in pairs can explain the gravitational wave burst GW150914. In this paper, the model is re-examined by considering the effect of inflationary dark matter density perturbations which produce additional tidal forces. As a result, the merge rate of PBHs binaries and the corresponding rate of the gravitational bursts are suppressed by the factor $\sim1.5-2$ in comparison with…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) may have been created by density fluctuations in the early Universe and could be as massive as $> 10^9$ solar masses or as small as the Planck mass. It has been postulated that a black hole has a temperature inversely-proportional to its mass and will thermally emit all species of fundamental particles via Hawking Radiation. PBHs with initial masses of $\sim 5 \times 10^{14}$ g (approximately one gigaton) should be expiring today with bursts of high-energy gamma radiation in the GeV--TeV energy range. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is sensiti…
The possibility that primordial black holes (PBHs) form a part of dark matter has been considered for a long time but poorly constrained over a wide mass range. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright radio transients with millisecond duration. Lensing effect of them has been proposed as one of the cleanest probes for constraining the presence of PBHs in the stellar mass window. In this paper, we first apply the normalised cross-correlation algorithm to search and identify candidates of lensed FRBs in the latest public FRB observations, i.e. $593$ FRBs which mainly consist of the first Canadian Hy…
We present a detailed assessment of the dynamical pathways leading to the coalescence of compact objects in Globular Clusters (GCs) and Short Gamma-Ray Burst (SGRB) production. We consider primordial binaries, dynamically formed binaries (through tidal two-body and three-body exchange interactions) and direct impacts of compact objects (WD/NS/BH). We show that if the primordial binary fraction is small, close encounters dominate the production rate of coalescing compact systems. We find that the two dominant channels are the interaction of field NSs with dynamically formed binaries, and two-bo…
Short Gamma-Ray Bursts (SGRBs) are expected to form from the coalescence of compact binaries, either of primordial origin or from dynamical interactions in globular clusters. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that the offset and afterglow brightness of a SGRB can help revealing the origin of its progenitor binary. We find that a SGRB is likely to result from the primordial channel if it is observed within 10 kpc from the center of a massive galaxy and shows a detectable afterglow. The same conclusion holds if it is 100 kpc away from a small, isolated galaxy and shows a weak aftergl…
The gamma-ray burst (GRB) rate is essential for revealing the connection between GRBs, supernovae and stellar evolution. Additionally, the GRB rate at high redshift provides a strong probe of star formation history in the early universe. While hundreds of GRBs are observed by Swift, it remains difficult to determine the intrinsic GRB rate due to the complex trigger algorithm of Swift. Current studies of the GRB rate usually approximate the Swift trigger algorithm by a single detection threshold. However, unlike the previously flown GRB instruments, Swift has over 500 trigger criteria based on …
The superradiant instability can lead to the generation of extremely dense axion clouds around rotating black holes. We show that, despite the long lifetime of the QCD axion with respect to spontaneous decay into photon pairs, stimulated decay becomes significant above a minimum axion density and leads to extremely bright lasers. The lasing threshold can be attained for axion masses $μ\gtrsim 10^{-8}\ \mathrm{eV}$, which implies superradiant instabilities around spinning primordial black holes with mass $\lesssim 0.01M_\odot$. Although the latter are expected to be non-rotating at formation, a…
We estimate the size of a primordial black hole exploding today via a white hole transition, and the power in the resulting explosion, using a simple model. We point out that Fast Radio Bursts, strong signals with millisecond duration, probably extragalactic and having unknown source, have wavelength not far from the expected size of the exploding hole. We also discuss the possible higher energy components of the signal.
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious astronomical radio transients with extremely short intrinsic duration. Until now, the physical origins of them still remain elusive especially for the non-repeating FRBs. Strongly inspired by recent progress on possible evidence of Earth-mass primordial black holes, we revisit the model of Earth-mass primordial black holes mergers as sources for non-repeating FRBs. Under the null hypothesis that the observed non-repeating FRBs are originated from the mergers of Earth-mass primordial black holes, we analyzed four independent samples of non-repeating FRBs …
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are candidates for dark matter as well as ultra-high energy cosmic rays. PBHs are speculated to exist over a large range of masses, from below $10^{15}$ g to $10^3$ M$_\odot$. Here we search for PBHs with an initial mass of $\sim 10^{15}$ g. Hawking radiation by black holes of this initial mass predicts their evaporation at present time. PBHs are expected to produce copious amounts of high-energy neutrinos and gamma rays right before evaporating. Gamma-ray instruments such as Fermi, VERITAS, HAWC, HESS, and Milagro have conducted searches for evaporating PBHs duri…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are thought to have been formed as a result of density fluctuations in the very early Universe. It is suggested that PBHs of mass $\sim 5 \times 10^{14} \mathrm{\ g}$ or less have evaporated through the release of Hawking radiation by the present day. However, PBHs of initial mass $10^{15} \mathrm{\ g}$ should still be evaporating at the present epoch. Over the past few years, very high-energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from PBHs in the form of a burst has been searched for using ground-based gamma-ray instruments. However, no observational evidence h…
Recent simulations on super-Eddington accretion flows have shown that, apart from the diffusion process, the vertical advection based on magnetic buoyancy can be a more efficient process to release the trapped photons in the optically thick disk. As a consequence, the radiative luminosity from the accretion disk can be far beyond the Eddington value. Following this spirit, we revisit the structure and radiation of hyper-accretion disks with mass accretion rates in the range $10^{-3}\sim 10~M_{\sun}~{\rm s}^{-1}$. Our results show that, due to the strong cooling through the vertical advection, …
We investigate the possibility of measuring intergalactic magnetic fields using the dispersion measures and rotation measures of fast radio bursts. With Bayesian methods, we produce probability density functions for values of these measures. We distinguish between contributions from the intergalactic medium, the host galaxy and the local environment of the progenitor. To this end, we use constrained, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the local Universe to compute lines-of-sight integrals from the position of the Milky Way. In particular, we differentiate between predominantly astrophysical an…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are gravitationally collapsed objects that may have been created by density fluctuations in the early universe and could have arbitrarily small masses down to the Planck scale. Hawking showed that due to quantum effects, a black hole has a temperature inversely proportional to its mass and will emit all species of fundamental particles thermally. PBHs with initial masses of ~5.0 x 10^14 g should be expiring in the present epoch with bursts of high-energy particles, including gamma radiation in the GeV - TeV energy range. The Milagro high energy observatory, which …
We present a carefully selected sample of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) observed by the Swift satellite up to June 2013. Inspired by the criteria we used to build a similar sample of bright long GRBs (the BAT6 sample), we selected SGRBs with favorable observing conditions for the redshift determination on ground, ending up with a sample of 36 events, almost half of which with a redshift measure. The redshift completeness increases up to about 70% (with an average redshift value of z = 0.85) by restricting to those events that are bright in the 15-150 keV Swift Burst Alert Telescope energy ban…
We calculate the theoretical event rate of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from the collapse of massive first-generation (Population III; Pop III) stars. The Pop III GRBs could be super-energetic with the isotropic energy up to $E_{\rm iso} \gtrsim 10^{55-57}$ ergs, providing a unique probe of the high-redshift Universe. We consider both the so-called Pop III.1 stars (primordial) and Pop III.2 stars (primordial but affected by radiation from other stars). We employ a semi-analytical approach that considers inhomogeneous hydrogen reionization and chemical evolution of the intergalactic medium. We show …
Context. The progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) have not yet been well identified. The most popular model is the merger of compact object binaries (NS-NS/NS-BH). However, other progenitor models cannot be ruled out. The delay-time distribution of SGRB progenitors, which is an important property to constrain progenitor models, is still poorly understood. Aims. We aim to better constrain the luminosity function of SGRBs and the delay-time distribution of their progenitors with newly discovered SGRBs. Methods. We present a low-contamination sample of 16 Swift SGRBs that is better defin…

Femtolensing of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) has been put forward as an exciting possibility to probe exotic astrophysical objects with masses below $10^{-13}$ solar masses such as small primordial black holes or ultra-compact dark matter minihalos, made up for instance of QCD axions. In this paper we critically review this idea, properly taking into account the extended nature of the source as well as wave optics effects. We demonstrate that most GRBs are inappropriate for femtolensing searches due to their large sizes. This removes the previous femtolensing bounds on primordial black holes, imply…
