We report progress towards computing the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient from the correlator of two chromo-electric fields attached to a Polyakov loop in pure SU(3) gauge theory. Using a multilevel algorithm and tree-level improvement, we study the behavior of the diffusion coefficient as a function of temperature in the wide range $1.1 < T / T_c < 10^4$ in order to compare it to perturbative expansions at high temperature. We find that within errors the lattice results are remarkably compatible with the next-to-leading order perturbative result.
Compared with lattice QCD, isospin breaking of heavy-meson decay constants from QCD sum rules agrees for $D$ mesons but disagrees (by a factor of four) for $B$ mesons.
We report the first measurements of sixth order non-linear quark number susceptibilities in continuum QCD. This extends our earlier computation of the continuum limit of non-linear quark number susceptibilities and the pressure in QCD for m/Tc=0.1. For T/Tc > 1.5, no phase transitions are observable for mu<30T. Systematics of off-diagonal susceptibilities are reported. The equation of state in the high temperature phase of the QCD plasma is constructed.
We compute quark and gluon propagators in 2-colour QCD at large baryon chemical potential mu. The gluon propagator is found to be antiscreened at intermediate mu and screened at large mu. The quark propagator is drastically modified in the superfluid region as a result of the formation of a superfluid gap.
QCD sum rules for decay constants of heavy mesons with $u$ or $d$ quark yield for $B$ mesons much less isospin breaking than lattice QCD but good agreement for $D$ mesons.
The present knowledge of QCD confining forces between static test charges is summarised, with an emphasis on lattice results. Recent developments in relating QCD potentials to quarkonium properties by use of effective field theory methods are presented. The validity of non-relativistic QCD and the adiabatic approximation with respect to heavy quark bound states is explored. I review recent progress in lattice QCD at non-zero temperature whith emphasis on the calculations of equation of state and the properties of heavy quar anti-quark pairs at high temperatures. I also briefly discuss the deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoring aspects of the QCD transition at finite temperature
Slight sophistications of the QCD sum-rule formalism may have great impact on the reliability of predicted hadron observables, as exemplified for the case of heavy-meson decay constants.
I briefly review the estimate of the gluonia masses, decay and mixings in QCD with massless quarks from QCD spectral sum rules and some low-energy theorems. The data in the $0^{++}$ channel can be explained with some maximal gluonium-quarkonium mixing schemes, which then suggest a large violation of the OZI rule, similar to the case of the $η'$ in the $U(1)_A$ sector.
Some interesting heavy-flavor questions are mentioned that may yield to the methods of lattice QCD. Special emphasis is placed on topics which arise in the discussion of CP violation in $B$ decays. Other subjects include quarkonium and light-quark systems and some potential applications outside QCD.
We compute masses of bottomonium and charmonium bound states using a Schrödinger equation with a heavy quark-antiquark potential including $1/m$ and $1/m^2$ corrections previously derived in potential Non-Relativistic QCD and computed with lattice QCD. This is a preparatory step for a future project, where we plan to take into account similar corrections to study quarkonium resonances and tetraquarks above the lowest meson-meson thresholds.
We study the free energy of a static quark anti-quark pair at finite temperature in three flavor QCD with degenerate quark masses using N_tau=4 and 6 lattices with Asqtad staggered fermion action. The static free energy was calculated for different values of the quark mass and the entropy contribution at large distances has been extracted. We also calculate the renormalized Polyakov loop following the approach by Kaczmarek et al.
A review of QCD-based theory approaches to study the heavy-flavor and exotic hadrons is given. The focus is on the results from lattice QCD and from lattice QCD complemented by effective field theories. Both approaches are first briefly introduced and applied in few examples. Then the status of various hadrons sectors is presented.
I discuss recent progress in calculating quarkonia correlators and spectral functions on the lattice in relation with the problem of quarkonia dissolution at high temperatures and heavy quark transport in Quark Gluon Plasma.
We analyze the change in free energy, internal energy and entropy due to the presence of a heavy quark anti-quark pair in a QCD heat bath. The internal energies and entropies are introduced as intensive observables calculated through thermal derivatives of the QCD partition function containing additional static color sources. The quark anti-quark internal energy and, in particular, the entropy clearly signal the phase change from quark confinement below and deconfinement above the transition and both observables are introduced such that they survive the continuum limit. Taking the gauge invariant quark correlator as an example, in this work we perform a direct comparison of lattice QCD simulations with the QCD sum rule approach. The quark correlator is first investigated in the framework of QCD sum rules and the correlation length of the quark field is calculated. Comparing the phenomenological part of the sum rule with previous measurements of the quark correlator on the lattice, we are able to obtain an independent result for the correlation length. We determine the mass of the charm quark ($m_c$) from lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks with a mass around the strange quark. We compare this to a determination in quenched QCD which has the same lattice spacing (0.1 fm). We investigate different formulations of the quark mass, based on the Vector Ward Identity, PCAC relation and the FNAL heavy quark formalism. Based on these preliminary results we find no effects due to sea quarks with a mass around strange.
I present a method which can be used to locate the expected critical endpoint of the phase diagram of QCD with two light quark flavors. I illustrate the ideas on a suitable Random Matrix Model and show preliminary results in QCD
This paper is a review of heavy quarks in lattice gauge theory, focusing on methodology. It includes a status report on some of the calculations that are relevant to heavy-quark spectroscopy and to flavor physics.
We analyze the screening of static diquark sources in 2-flavor QCD and compare results with the screening of static quark-antiquark pairs. We show that a two quark system in a fixed color representations is screened at short distances like a single quark source in the same color representation whereas at large distances the two quarks are screened independently. At high temperatures we observe that the relative strength of the interaction in diquark and quark-antiquark systems, respectively, obeys Casimir scaling. The Global Colour Model of QCD is used in conjunction with a pure-gluon lattice correlator (by Marenzoni et al.) to extract from meson data a momentum-dependent quark-gluon coupling down to $s \approx 0.3 GeV^2$. This is compared with a lattice calculation (by Skullerud) of the quark-gluon coupling.
We study the change in free and internal energy due to the presence of a heavy quark anti-quark pair in a thermal heat bath in QCD with 2-flavors of staggered quarks at finite temperature. We discuss string breaking below as well as screening above the transition. Similarities and differences to the quenched case are discussed.
Values for the strange quark mass and average up/down mass have been obtained from quenched lattice QCD simulations using the domain wall fermion action. This discretization preserves the properties of flavor and chiral symmetry at nonzero lattice spacing. Results are shown for two values of the lattice spacing. The mass renormalization constant is computed nonperturbatively.
The current status of determinations of the QCD running quark masses is reviewed. Emphasis is on recent progress on analytical precision determinations based on finite energy QCD sum rules. A critical discussion of the merits of this approach over other alternative QCD sum rules is provided. Systematic uncertainties from both the hadronic and the QCD sector have been recently identified and dealt with successfully, thus leading to values of the quark masses with unprecedented accuracy. Results currently rival in precision with lattice QCD determinations.
I review the current status of lattice calculations of heavy quark quantities. Particular emphasis is placed on leptonic and semileptonic decay matrix elements.
We give an example of modeling phenomenological heavy-quark potentials in a five-dimensional framework nowadays known as AdS/QCD. In particular we emphasize the absence of infrared renormalons.
The magnetic dipole moments of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly heavy baryons are extracted in the framework of light-cone QCD sum rule. The electromagnetic properties of the doubly heavy baryons encodes important information of their internal structure. The results for the magnetic dipole moments of doubly heavy baryons acquired in this work are compared with the predictions of the other theoretical approaches.
We introduce the strange quark mass to the Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. We compute mass shifts in the spectra of three-flavor baryons at the leading order in perturbation in quark masses. Comparison with experimental data shows an agreement only qualitatively.
We compute the two-loop contribution to the QCD pressure in a strong magnetic background, for arbitrary quark masses. We show that, for very large fields, the chiral limit is trivial.
We review studies of QCD thermodynamics by lattice QCD simulations with dynamical Wilson quarks. After explaining the basic properties of QCD with Wilson quarks at finite temperature including the phase structure and the scaling properties around the chiral phase transition, we discuss the critical temperature, the equation of state and heavy-quark free energies.
We study multi-quark (3Q,4Q,5Q) systems in lattice QCD. We perform the detailed studies of multi-quark potentials in lattice QCD to clarify the inter-quark interaction in multi-quark systems. We find that all the multi-quark potentials are well described by the OGE Coulomb plus multi-Y-type linear potential, i.e., the multi-Y Ansatz. For multi-quark systems, we observe lattice QCD evidences of ``flip-flop'', i.e., flux-tube recombination. These lattice QCD studies give an important bridge between elementary particle physics and nuclear physics.
We compute the mass of the charm quark using both quenched and dynamical lattice QCD calculations. We examine the effects of mass dependent lattice artifacts by comparing two different formalisms for the heavy quarks. We take the continuum limit of the charm mass in quenched QCD by extrapolating from three different lattice spacings. At a fixed lattice spacing, the mass of the charm quark is compared between quenched QCD and dynamical QCD with a sea quark mass around strange. In the continuum limit of quenched QCD, we find m_c(m_c)=1.29(7)(13) GeV. No evidence was seen for unquenching.
We present the results from full QCD simulations with four flavors of light stag gered dynamical quarks on {\it {\it QCDSP}} supercomputer. Previous results are reproduced and the simulation reported here yields new results consistent with o ur previous runs. The hadron spectrum obtained with Wilson valence fermions reported here will allow us to determine if our earlier conclusions are independent of lattice form alism.
I review how the determination of quark masses from lattice QCD can be used to study textures in quark mass matrices. This type of theory relates quark masses to CKM matrix elements. I demonstrate how the recent precision results from the HPQCD and MILC collaborations for quark masses can be used to test some of these ideas.
One loop corrections to the domain-wall quark propagator are calculated in massless QCD. It is shown that no additative counter term to the current quark mass is generated in this theory, and the wave function renormalization factor of the massless quark is explicitly evaluated. We also show that an analysis with a simple mean-field approximation can explain properties of the massless quark in numerical simulations of QCD with domain-wall quarks.
I review the recent status of heavy flavor physics results from lattice QCD. In particular, I focus on the heavy-light decay constants, the bag parameters, the form factors, and the bottom quark mass. New progresses in theoretical methods are also reviewed.
At tree level, I discuss modifying the FNAL heavy quark formalism to include a twisted mass term. I find that at maximal twist the so called KLM factor is independent of the heavy mass.
We study QCD in 2 dimensions using the improved lattice fermionic Hamiltonian proposed by Luo, Chen, Xu and Jiang. The vector mass and the chiral condensate are computed for various $SU(N_C)$ gauge groups. We do observe considerable improvement in comparison with the Wilson quark case.
We discuss the construction of basis states for Hamiltonian QCD on the lattice, in particular states with dynamical quark pairs. We calculate the matrix elements of the operators in the QCD Hamiltonian between these states. Along with the ``harmonic oscillator'' states introduced in previous pure SU(3) work, these states form a working basis for calculations in full QCD.
We present further results for one-loop matching of heavy-light axial and vector currents between continuum QCD and a lattice theory with NRQCD heavy quarks and massless clover quarks.
We discuss the importance of using partially quenched theories with three degenerate quarks for extrapolating to QCD, and present some relevant results from chiral perturbation theory.
We discuss latest results of lattice QCD simulations with dynamical fermions. Special emphasis is paid to the subjects of the static quark potential, the light hadron spectrum, $Υ$ spectrum, and the pion-nucleon-sigma term.
We compute the b quark mass from dynamical lattice QCD with clover quarks. The calculation is done at a fixed lattice spacing with sea quark masses as low as half the strange quark mass. Our final result is m_b(m_b} = 4.25(2)(11) GeV, where the first error is statistical and the last error is the systematic uncertainty.
We report on the simulation of QCD with light dynamical quarks using the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm. In an exploratory study with two flavours of quarks at lattice spacing about 0.27 fm and with quark mass down to one sixth of the strange quark mass eigenvalue spectra and autocorrelations have been studied. Here we present results on the volume dependence as well as tests of possible algorithmic improvements.
Ongoing calculations on the QCDOC supercomputer at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the APEnext installation at the University of Bielefeld aim to determine the critical temperature of the QCD phase transition as well as the equation of state with almost realistic quark masses. We will discuss preliminary results of the quark mass and cut-off dependence of order parameters, susceptibilities, static quark potentials and the critical temperature in (2+1)-flavor QCD. All these quantities are of immediate interest for heavy ion phenomenology.
In this talk I review several topics concerning the determination of quark masses by means of lattice QCD simulations, with particular focus on recently introduced techniques of non-perturbative renormalisation, the determination of heavy quark masses, and the proper quantification of the source of isospin breaking effects in the light quark sector.
We evaluate the pion_0 into two gammas decay amplitude by an effective action derived from QCD in the quark composites approach, getting the standard value. We also verify that our effective action correctly reproduces the chiral anomaly.
A previously introduced multi-boson technique for the simulation of QCD with dynamical quarks is described and some results of first test runs on a $6^3\times12$ lattice with Wilson quarks and gauge group SU(2) are reported.
We have simulated lattice QCD with an irrelevant 4-fermion interaction and 2 zero mass quarks. The chiral phase transition is observed to be second order and we discuss extraction of critical exponents.
