Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities are fundamental and ubiquitous optical elements frequently used in various sensing applications. Here, we introduce a general theoretical framework to study arbitrary light-cavity mode interactions for planar FPs and show how optical aberrations, intrinsic to the interrogating beam or due to imperfect cavities, reduce optical sensitivity by exciting higher-order spatial modes in the cavity. We find that particular Zernike aberrations play a dominant role in sensitivity degradation, and that the general loss of sensitivity can be significantly recovered by appropriate wavefront correction or mode filtering. We then demonstrate our theoretical findings also experimentally and show that in practice the sensitivity of realistic planar FP sensors can be improved up to three-fold by a synergistic combination of adaptive optics and passive mode filtering.
A Mach-Zehnder interferometer with absorbing Fabry-Pérot cavities is used to measure the optical phase differences upon rotation around a vertical axis. The details of the expected experimental results are described based on the idea that a conducting medium can introduce phase differences due to changes in material conductivity that are expected to occur when a medium moves with respect to a reference frame. Experimental details and results are discussed.
In this paper we present a theoretical and experimental study of the dynamical behaviour of birefringent cavities. Our experimental data show that usual hypothesis which provides that a Fabry-Perot cavity is a first-order low pass filter cannot explain the behaviour of a birefringent cavity. We explain this phenomenon, and give the theoretical expression of the equivalent cavity filter which corresponds to a second-order low pass filter.
We present a method to engineer the frequency splitting of polarization eigenmodes in fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavities. Using specific pattern of multiple CO$_2$ laser pulses, we machine paraboloidal micromirrors with controlled elliptical shape in a large range of radius of curvature. This method is versatile and can be used to produce cavities with maximized or near-zero polarization mode splitting. In addition, we realize dual-wavelength FFP cavities with finesse exceeding $40\,000$ at 780$\,$nm and at 1559$\,$nm in the telecom range. We provide direct evidence that the birefringent frequen…
The dynamics of light in Fabry-Perot cavities with varying length and input laser frequency are analyzed and the exact condition for resonance is derived. This dynamic resonance depends on the light transit time in the cavity and the Doppler effect due to the mirror motions. The response of the cavity to length variations is very different from its response to laser frequency variations. If the frequency of these variations is equal to multiples of the cavity free spectral range, the response to length is maximized while the response to the laser frequency is zero. Implications of these result…
Various four-mirror optical resonators are studied in the perspective of realizing passive stacking cavities. A comparative study of the mechanical stability is provided. The polarization properties of the cavity eigenmodes are described and it is shown that the effect of mirror misalignments (or motions) induces polarization and stacking power instabilities. These instabilities increase with the finesse of the Fabry-Perot cavity. A tetrahedral configuration of the four mirrors is found to minimize the consequences of the mirrors's motion and misalignment by reducing the instability parameter …
Factors that contribute to the temperature dependence of a resonant frequency in a low-expansion optical cavity are discussed, including deformation at the cavity ends due to different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the spacer, optically-contacted mirror substrate and coating. A model of the temperature dependence is presented that incorporates finite-element-analysis of the cavity ends. A measurement of frequency versus temperature of a cavity mode is used along with the model to deduce a spacers CTE versus temperature profile. The measured profile correlates very well with a sepa…
We study the effect of finite size and misalignment on a fundamental optomechanical setup: a Fabry-Pérot cavity with one fixed and one moveable mirror. We describe in detail light confinement under these real world imperfections and compare the behaviour of the intracavity and output fields to the well-known ideal case. In particular, we show that it is possible to trace the motion of the movable mirror itself by measuring intensity changes in the output field even in the presence of fabrication shortcomings and thermal noise. Our result might be relevant to the transition from high precision …
We study the frequency splitting of the polarization eigenmodes of the fundamental transverse mode in CO2 laser-machined, high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot cavities and investigate the influence of the geometry of the cavity mirrors. Their highly reflective surfaces are typically not rotationally symmetric but have slightly different radii of curvature along two principal axes. We observe that the eccentricity of such elliptical mirrors lifts the degeneracy of the polarization eigenmodes. The impact of the eccentricity increases for smaller radii of curvature. A model derived from corrections t…
We report on the relative length fluctuation of two fixed-spacer Fabry-Perot cavities with mirrors fabricated from silica/tantala dielectric coatings on fused silica substrates. By locking a laser to each cavity and reading out the beat note $\hatν = ν_1 - ν_2$ of the transmitted beams, we find that, for frequencies from 10 Hz to 1 kHz, the amplitude spectral density of beat note fluctuation is $\sqrt{S_\hatν(f)} = (0.5\,\mathrm{Hz})/f^{1/2}$. By careful budgeting of noise sources contributing to the beat note, we find that our measurement is consistent with the fluctuation in this band being …
We design, in a most simple way, Fabry-Perot cavities with longitudinal chiral modes by sandwiching between two smooth metallic silver mirrors a layer of polystyrene made planar chiral by torsional shear stress. We demonstrate that the helicity-preserving features of our cavities stem from a spin-orbit coupling mechanism seeded inside the cavities by the specific chiroptical features of planar chirality. Planar chirality gives rise to an extrinsic source of three-dimensional chirality under oblique illumination that endows the cavities with enantiomorphic signatures measured experimentally and…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate the enhancement in the filtering quality (Q) factor of an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) by embedding it in an integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity formed by cascaded Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs). By utilizing coherent interference within the FP cavity to reshape the transmission spectrum of the MRR, both the Q factor and the extinction ratio (ER) can be significantly improved. The device is theoretically analyzed, and practically fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. Experimental results show that up to 11-times improvement in Q fact…

We demonstrate the fabrication of ultra-low-loss, all-fiber Fabry-Pérot cavities containing a nanofiber section, optimized for cavity quantum electrodynamics. By continuously monitoring the finesse and fiber radius during fabrication of a nanofiber between two fiber Bragg gratings, we are able to precisely evaluate taper transmission as a function of radius. The resulting cavities have an internal round-trip loss of only 0.31% at a nanofiber waist radius of 207 nm, with a total finesse of 1380, and a maximum expected internal cooperativity of $\sim$ 1050 for a cesium atom on the nanofiber surf…
Lasers stabilized to vacuum-gap Fabry-Pérot optical reference cavities display extraordinarily low noise and high stability, with linewidths much less than 1 Hz. These lasers can expand into new applications and ubiquitous use with the development of compact, portable cavities that are manufacturable at scale. Here we demonstrate an 8 mL volume Fabry-Pérot cavity constructed with mirrors that are fabricated lithographically with finesse near 1 million. A laser locked to the cavity exhibits phase noise limited by the cavity thermal noise for offset frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to $\approx$ 1 k…
We analyze an optical 3-port reflection grating by means of a scattering matrix formalism. Amplitude and phase relations between the 3 ports, i.e. the 3 orders of diffraction are derived. Such a grating can be used as an all-reflective, low-loss coupler to Fabry-Perot cavities. We derive the input output relations of a 3-port grating coupled cavity and find distinct properties not present in 2-port coupled cavities. The cavity relations further reveal that the 3-port coupler can be designed such that the additional cavity port interferes destructively. In this case the all-reflective, low-loss…
We achieved a 0.5 Hz optical beat note line width with ~ 0.1 Hz/s frequency drift at 972 nm between two external cavity diode lasers independently stabilized to two vertically mounted Fabry-Perot (FP) reference cavities. Vertical FP reference cavities are suspended in mid-plane such that the influence of vertical vibrations to the mirror separation is significantly suppressed. This makes the setup virtually immune for vertical vibrations that are more difficult to isolate than the horizontal vibrations. To compensate for thermal drifts the FP spacers are made from Ultra-Low-Expansion (ULE) gla…
We demonstrate fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavities with concave mirrors that can be operated at cavity lengths as large as 1.5mm without significant deterioration of the finesse. This is achieved by using a laser dot machining technique to shape spherical mirrors with ultralow roughness and employing single-mode fibers with large mode area for good mode matching to the cavity. Additionally, in contrast to previous FFPs, these cavities can be used over an octave-spanning frequency range with adequate coatings. We also show directly that shape deviations caused by the fiber's index profile lead to …
Challenging optical resonant gain achieved via the use of two geometrically modematched Fabry-Perot cavities is anticipated in Any Light Particle Search II (ALPS II) to extend the search sensitivity of light-weight sub-eV dark matter candidates to uncharted parameter space of scientific interest. We report on the precision optomechanics developed for geometrical modematching of optical cavities. The general concept, the mechanical mounting scheme, and the use of an autocollimator to streamline the metrology procedure are rigorously examined using optical interferometry, all of which meet the r…
Polariton states with high levels of chiral dissymmetry offer exciting prospects for quantum information, sensing, and lasing applications. Such dissymmetry must emanate from either the involved optical resonators or the quantum emitters. Here, we theoretically demonstrate how chiral polaritons can be realized by combining (high quality factor) achiral Fabry-Perot cavities with samples exhibiting a phenomenon known as "apparent circular dichroism" (ACD), which results from an interference between linear birefringence and dichroic interactions. By introducing a quantum electrodynamical theory o…
Thermal effects are already important in currently operating interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Planned upgrades of these detectors involve increasing optical power to combat quantum shot noise. We consider the ramifications of this increased power for one particular class of laser beams--wide, flat-topped, mesa beams. In particular we model a single mesa beam Fabry-Perot cavity having thermoelastically deformed mirrors. We calculate the intensity profile of the fundamental cavity eigenmode in the presence of thermal perturbations, and the associated changes in thermal noise. We als…
Fiber Fabry-Perot cavities, formed by micro-machined mirrors on the end-facets of optical fibers, are used in an increasing number of technical and scientific applications, where they typically require precise stabilization of their optical resonances. Here, we study two different approaches to construct fiber Fabry-Perot resonators and stabilize their length for experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics with neutral atoms. A piezo-mechanically actuated cavity with feedback based on the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique is compared to a novel rigid cavity design that makes use of the hig…
Three-mode parametric-instabilities risk stable operation of gravitational-wave detectors. Instabilities occur through time varying radiation-pressure distributions, derived from beating between two optical modes, exciting mirror acoustic modes in Fabry-Perot cavities. Here we report the first demonstration of radiation-pressure driving of ultrasonic-acoustic modes via pairs of optical modes in gravitational-wave type optical cavities. In this experiment ~0.4W of TEM01 mode and ~1kW of TEM00 mode circulated inside the cavity, an ~181.6kHz excitation was observed with amplitude ~5E-13m. The res…
The Doppler effect in Fabry-Perot cavities with suspended mirrors is analyzed. Intrinsically small, the Doppler shift accumulates in the cavity and becomes comparable to or greater than the line-width of the cavity if its finesse is high or its length is large. As a result, damped oscillations of the cavity field occur when one of the mirrors passes a resonance position. A formula for this transient is derived. It is shown that the frequency of the oscillations is equal to the accumulated Doppler shift and the relaxation time of the oscillations is equal to the storage time of the cavity. Comp…
One way of optically monitoring molecule concentrations is to utilise the high sensitivity of the transmission and reflection rates of Fabry-Perot cavities to changes of their optical properties. Up to now, intrinsic and extrinsic Fabry-Perot cavity sensors have been considered with analytes either being placed inside the resonator or coupled to evanescent fields on the outside. Here we show that Fabry-Perot cavities can also be used to monitor molecule concentrations non-invasively and remotely, since the reflection of light from the target molecules back into the Fabry-Perot cavity adds upwa…
We investigate the modulational instability and time-domain dynamics of nonlinear magnetic metamaterials composed of coupled split-ring resonators loaded by Kerr nonlinearity. Our results indicate that the recently proposed optical switching of local optical index based on uniform-response assumption seems fragile. We conceive two alternative schemes to utilize the valuable enhanced non- linearity, one is to focus on few-body systems and directly make use of the modulational instability (e.g., an optical comparator design), the other is to consider global switching arising from global feedback…
This second paper on the Fabry-Perot cavity presents a semi-classical approach, which means that we consider the transition from wave optics to geometrical optics. The basic concepts are the periodic orbits and their stability. For the plano-concave Fabry-Perot cavity in the paraxial approximation, the derivation of the trace formula demonstrates that the spectrum is based only on the axial periodic orbit and its repetitions. Experiments with micro-lasers illustrate the relation to periodic orbits. The methods presented in this paper are not limited to laser cavities and can be applied to a la…
We theoretically study circular dichroism of chiral molecules embedded inside a helicity-preserving Fabry-Pérot cavity. We find an increase of the intrinsic chiroptical response of the molecules by 2 orders of magnitude and report the first clear signature of chiral cavity polaritons upon entering the regime of strong light-matter coupling. We study a cavity design based on two dielectric photonic crystal mirrors acting, in a narrow frequency range, as efficient polarization cross-converters in transmission for one polarization and almost perfect reflectors for the other polarization. We show …
We present three high finesse tunable monolithic fiber Fabry-Perot cavities (FFPCs) with high passive mechanical stability. The fiber mirrors are fixed inside slotted glass ferrules, which guarantee an inherent alignment of the resonators. An attached piezoelectric element enables fast tuning of the FFPC resonance frequency over the entire free-spectral range for two of the designs. Stable locking of the cavity resonance is achieved for feedback bandwidths as low as $20\,$mHz, demonstrating the high passive stability. At the other limit, locking bandwidths up to $27\,$kHz, close to the first m…
We demonstrate the optical coupling of two cavities without light transmission through a substrate. Compared to a conventional coupling component, that is a partially transmissive mirror, an all-reflective coupler avoids light absorption in the substrate and therefore associated thermal problems, and even allows the use of opaque materials with possibly favourable mechanical and thermal properties. Recently, the all-reflective coupling of two cavities with a low-efficiency 3-port diffraction grating was theoretically investigated. Such a grating has an additional (a third) port. However, it wa…
Optical cavities with both optimized resonant conditions and high quality factors are important metrological tools. In particular, they are used for laser gravitational wave (GW) detectors. It is necessary to suppress the parametric instability by damping the resonant conditions of harmful higher order optical modes (HOOM) in order to have high cavity powers in GW detectors. This can be achieved effectively by using non spherical mirrors in symmetric Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities by increasing roundtrip losses of HOOMs. Fabry-Perot cavities in most of the GW detectors have non-identical mirrors to…
In this paper, a differential MOEMS accelerometer based on the Fabry-Perot (FP) micro-cavities is presented. The optical system of the device consists of two FP cavities and the mechanical system is composed of a proof mass that is suspended by four springs. The applied acceleration tends to move the PM from its resting position. This mechanical displacement can be measured by the FP interferometer formed between the proof mass cross-section and the optical fiber end face. The proposed sensor is fabricated on a silicon on insulator (SOI) wafer using the bulk micromachining method. The results …
We experimentally demonstrate the phase relations of 3-port gratings by investigating 3-port coupled Fabry-Perot cavities. Two different gratings which have the same 1st order diffraction efficiency but differ substantially in their 2nd order diffraction efficiency have been designed and manufactured. Using the gratings as couplers to Fabry-Perot cavities we could validate the results of an earlier theoretical description of the phases at a three port grating.
We explore the optical properties of a Fabry-Perot resonator with an embedded Parity-Time (PT) symmetrical grating. This PT-symmetrical grating is non diffractive (transparent) when illuminated from one side and diffracting (Bragg reflection) when illuminated from the other side, thus providing a unidirectional reflective functionality. The incorporated PT-symmetrical grating forms a resonator with two embedded cavities. We analyze the transmission and reflection properties of these new structures through a transfer matrix approach. Depending on the resonator geometry these cavities can intera…
Optical cavities can support many transverse and longitudinal modes. A paraxial scalar theory predicts that the resonance frequencies of these modes cluster in different orders. A non-paraxial vector theory predicts that the frequency degeneracy within these clusters is lifted, such that each order acquires a spectral fine structure, comparable to the fine structure observed in atomic spectra. In this paper, we calculate this fine structure for microcavities and show how it originates from various non-paraxial effects and is co-determined by mirror aberrations. The presented theory, which appl…
We demonstrate that a proton irradiation with fluences of $3.6\times10^{10}$/cm$^{2}$ at low energy ($<$ 36 MeV) and $1.46 \times 10^{10}$/cm$^{2}$ at high energy (40 MeV and 90 MeV combined) on the dielectric mirrors of Fabry-Pérot cavities with a finesse of about 700 000 causes less than 5% change in the finesse. Furthermore, no influence on the coupling efficiency to the cavities was observed, the efficiency being approximately 70%. The irradiation was carried out with a spectrum approximating the proton energy spectrum of a highly elliptic Earth orbit with duration of 5 years, proposed for…
Nearly concentric optical cavities can be used to prepare optical fields with a very small mode volume. We implement an anaclastic design of a such a cavity that significantly simplifies mode matching to the fundamental cavity mode. The cavity is shown to have diffraction-limited performance for a mode volume of $\approx10^4λ^3$. This is in sharp contrast with the behavior of cavities with plano-concave mirrors, where aberrations significantly increase the losses in the fundamental mode. We estimate the related cavity QED parameters and show that the proposed cavity design allows for strong co…
Effects of surface roughness and top layer thickness on the performance of Fabry-Perot cavities and responsive open resonators based on distributed Bragg reflectors
While nanoscale color generations have been studied for years, the high performance transmission structural color, simultaneously equipped with large gamut, high resolution, and optical multiplexing abilities, still remains as a hanging issue. Here, a silicon metasurface embedded Fabry-Pérot cavity is demonstrated to address this problem. By changing the planar geometries of metasurface units, the cavities provide transmission colors with 194% sRGB gamut coverage and 141111 DPI resolution, along with more than 300% enhanced angular tolerance. Such high density allows two-dimensional color mixi…
We study and realize asymmetric fiber-based cavities with optimized mode match to achieve high reflectivity on resonance. This is especially important for mutually coupling two physical systems via light fields, e.g. in quantum hybrid systems. Our detailed theoretical and experimental analysis reveals that on resonance the interference effect between the directly reflected non-modematched light and the light leaking back out of the cavity can lead to large unexpected losses due to the mode filtering of the incoupling fiber. Strong restrictions for the cavity design result out of this effect an…
We present the first demonstration of real-time closed-loop control and deterministic tuning of an independently suspended Fabry-Perot optical cavity using digitally-enhanced heterodyne interferometry, realising a peak sensitivity of $\sim$10 pm$/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ over the 10-1000 Hz frequency band. The methods presented are readily extensible to multiple coupled cavities. As such, we anticipate that refinements of this technique may find application in future interferometric gravitational-wave detectors.
The shot-noise limited sensitivity of Michelson-type laser interferometers with Fabry-Perot arm cavities can be increased by the so-called power-recycling technique. In such a scheme the power-recycling cavity is optically coupled with the interferometer's arm cavities. A problem arises because the central coupling mirror transmits a rather high laser power and may show thermal lensing, thermo-refractive noise and photo-thermo-refractive noise. Cryogenic cooling of this mirror is also challenging, and thus thermal noise becomes a general problem. Here, we theoretically investigate an all-refle…
