We consider the problem $$ (P_λ)\quad -Δ_{p}u=λu^{p-1}+a(x)u^{q-1},\quad u\geq0\quad\mbox{ in }Ω$$ under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Here $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$), $λ\in\mathbb{R}$, $1<q<p$, and $a\in C(\overlineΩ)$ changes sign. These conditions enable the existence of dead core solutions for this problem, which may admit multiple nontrivial solutions. We show that for $λ<0$ the functional \[ I_λ(u):=\int_Ω\left( \frac{1}{p}|\nabla u|^{p}-\frac{λ}{p}|u|^{p}-\frac{1}{q}a(x)|u|^{q}\right) , \] defined in $X=W_{0}^{1,p}(Ω)$ or $X=W^{1,p}(Ω)$, has \textit{exactly} one nonnegative global minimizer, and this one is the \textit{only} solution of $(P_λ)$ being positive in $Ω_{a}^{+}$ (the set where $a>0$). In particular, this problem has at most one positive solution for $λ<0$. Under some condition on $a$, the above uniqueness result fails for some values of $λ>0$ as we obtain, besides the ground state solution, a \textit{second} solution positive in $Ω_{a}^{+}$. We also provide conditions on $λ$, $a$ and $q$ such that these solutions become positive in $Ω$, and analyze the formation of dead cores for a generic solution.
The aim of this paper is analyzing existence, multiplicity, and regularity issues for the positive solutions of a Neumann boundary value problem of superlinear indefinite type related to the mean curvature operator with a sublinear potential at infinity.
We consider quasilinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ of the form% \[ -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^{2})=g(u)\text{,}% \] where $g(u)$ is $4$-superlinear. Unlike all known results in the literature, the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ is allowed to be indefinite, hence the variational functional does not satisfy the mountain pass geometry. By a local linking argument and Morse theory, we obtain a nontrivial solution for the problem. In case that $g$ is odd, we get an unbounded sequence of solutions.
It is established existence of bound and ground state solutions for quasilinear elliptic systems driven by (ϕ1, ϕ2)-Laplacian operator. The main feature here is to consider quasilinear elliptic systems involving both nonsingular nonlinearities combined with indefinite potentials and singular cases perturbed by superlinear and subcritical couple terms. These prevent us to use arguments based on Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition and variational methods for differentiable functionals. By exploring the Nehari method and doing a fine analysis on the fibering map associated, we get estimates that allo…
This article sets forth results on the existence, positivity and boundedness of solutions for quasilinear elliptic systems involving p-Laplacian and q-Laplacian operators. The approach combines Schaefer's fixed point, comparison principle as well as Moser's iteration procedure.
In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity results of nontrivial positive solutions to the following quasilinear elliptic equation on $\RN$, when $N\geq2$, \begin{equation} \Lp u=λ\hspace{0.2mm}K(x)u^{r-1}-V(x)u^{q-1}.\nonumber \end{equation} Here, $K(x),V(x)>0$ are suitable potentials, $1<p<r<q<\infty$, and $λ>0$ is a parameter. To study this problem, some compact embedding results regarding $\MVR\hookrightarrow\LKR$ are proved that unify and extend some recent results of the author \cite{Ha1,Ha2,Ha3}.
We establish a positivity property for a class of semilinear elliptic problems involving indefinite sublinear nonlinearities. Namely, we show that any nontrivial nonnegative solution is positive for a class of problems the strong maximum principle does not apply to. Our approach is based on a continuity argument combined with variational techniques, the sub and supersolutions method and some a priori bounds. Both Dirichlet and Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions are considered. As a byproduct, we deduce some existence and uniqueness results. Finally, as an application, we derive some posit…
Let $1<q<p$ and $a\in C(\overlineΩ)$ be sign-changing, where $Ω$ is a bounded and smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. We show that the functional \[ I_{q}(u):=\int_Ω\left( \frac{1}{p}|\nabla u|^{p}-\frac{1}{q}a(x)|u|^{q}\right) , \] has exactly one nonnegative minimizer $U_{q}$ (in $W_{0}^{1,p}(Ω)$ or $W^{1,p}(Ω)$). In addition, we prove that $U_{q}$ is the only possible \textit{positive} solution of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation, which shows that this equation has at most one positive solution. Furthermore, we show that if $q$ is close enough to $p$ then $U_{q}$ is positive, which als…
In this paper we prove a Lyapunov type inequality for quasilinear problems with indefinite weights. We show that the first eigenvalue is bounded below in terms of the integral of the weight, instead of the integral of its positive part. We apply this inequality to some eigenvalue homogenization problems with indefinite weights.
We consider a system of quasilinear elliptic equations, with indefinite super-linear nonlinearity, depending on two real parameters $λ,μ$. By using the Nehari manifold and the notion of extremal parameter, we extend some results concerning existence of positive solutions.
This paper is devoted to the existence and non-existence of positive solutions for a $(p, q)$-Laplacian system with indefinite nonlinearity depending on two parameters $(λ,μ)$. By using the sub-supersolution method together with adaptations of ideas found in \cite{AAS,CRMZ}, we extend some previous result.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$) be a smooth bounded domain, $a\in C(\barΩ)$ a sign-changing function, and $0\leq q<1$. We investigate the Robin problem \[ \begin{cases} -Δu=a(x)u^{q} & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ u\geq0 & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ \partial_νu=αu & \mbox{on $\partial Ω$}, \end{cases} \] where $α\in\lbrack-\infty,\infty)$ and $ν$ is the unit outward normal to $\partialΩ$. Due to the lack of strong maximum principle structure, this problem may have \textit{dead core} solutions. However, for a large class of weights $a$ we recover a \textit{positivity} property when $q$ is close to $1$, which…
We deal with existence and non-existence of non-negative entire solutions that blow-up at infinity for a quasilinear problem depending on a non-negative real parameter. Our main objectives in this paper are to provide far more general conditions for existence and non-existence of solutions. To this end, we explore an associated $μ$-parameter convective ground state problem, sub and super solutions method combined and an approximation arguments to show existence of solutions. To show the result of non-existence of solutions, we follow an idea due to Mitidieri-Pohozaev.
We investigate the problem $$-Δu = λb(x)|u|^{q-2}u +a(x)|u|^{p-2}u \mbox{ in } Ω, \quad \frac{\partial u}{\partial \mathbf{n}} = 0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω, \leqno{(P_λ)} $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N \geq2$), $1<q<2<p$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, and $a,b \in C^α(\overlineΩ)$ with $0<α<1$. Under some indefinite type conditions on $a$ and $b$ we prove the existence of two nontrivial non-negative solutions for $|λ|$ small. We characterize then the asymptotic profiles of these solutions as $λ\to 0$, which implies in some cases the positivity and ordering of these solutions.…
This paper investigates the link between the Maximum Principle and the sign of the (generalized) principal eigenvalue for elliptic operators in unbounded domains. Our approach covers the cases of Dirichlet, Neumann, and (indefinite) Robin boundary conditions and treat them in a unified way. For a certain class of elliptic operators (including the class of selfadjoint operators), we establish that the positivity of the principal eigenvalue is a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of the Maximum Principle. If the principal eigenvalue is zero, no general answer holds; instead, und…
