We present a study of wave processes occurring in solar active region NOAA 11131 on 2010 December 10, captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory in the 1600A, 304A, and 171A channels. For spectral analysis we employed pixelised wavelet filtering together with a developed digital technique based on empirical mode decomposition. We studied the 3-minute wave dynamics to obtain relationships with the magnetic structuring of the underlying sunspot. We found that during development of wave trains the motion path occurred along a preferential direction, and that the broadband wavefronts can be represented as a set of separate narrowband oscillation sources. These sources become visible as the waves pass through the umbral inhomogeneities caused by the differing magnetic field inclination angles. We found the spatial and frequency fragmentation of wavefronts, and deduced that the combination of narrowband spherical and linear parts of the wavefronts provide the observed spirality. Maps of the magnetic field inclination angles confirm this assumption. We detect the activation of umbral structures as the increasing of oscillations in the sources along the front ridge. Their temporal dynamics are associated with the occurrence of umbral flashes. Spatial localisation of the sources is stable over time and depends on the oscillation period. We propose that these sources are the result of wave paths along the loops extending outwards from the magnetic bundles of the umbra.
We observe and characterize the scattering of acoustic wave packets by a sunspot, in a regime where the wavelength is comparable to the size of the sunspot. Spatial maps of wave traveltimes and amplitudes are measured from the cross-covariance function of the random wave field. The averaging procedure is such that incoming wave packets are plane wave packets. Observations show that the magnitude of the traveltime perturbation caused by the sunspot diminishes as waves propagate away from the sunspot -- a finite-wavelength phenomenon known as wavefront healing. Observations also show a reduction…
Solar active regions show a wide variety of oscillatory phenomena. The presence of the magnetic field leads to the appearance of several wave modes, whose behavior is determined by the sunspot thermal and magnetic structure. We aim to study the relation between the umbral and penumbral waves observed at the high photosphere and the magnetic field topology of the sunspot. Observations of the sunspot in active region NOAA 12662 obtained with the GREGOR telescope (Observatorio del Teide, Spain) were acquired on 2017 June 17. The data set includes a temporal series in the Fe I 5435 Å line obtained…
We report a different type of three-minute chromospheric oscillations above a sunspot in association with a small-scale impulsive event in a light bridge. During our observations, we found a transient brightening in the light bridge. The brightening was composed of elementary bursts that may be a manifestation of fast repetitive magnetic reconnections in the light bridge. Interestingly, the oscillations in the nearby sunspot umbra were impulsively excited when the intensity of the brightening reached its peak. The initial period of the oscillations was about 2.3 minutes and then gradually incr…
Three- and five-minute oscillations are commonly found in any sunspot. As they are modulated by the internal thermal and magnetic structures of a sunspot, therehence, they could be used as an effective tool for sunspot seismology. In this paper, we investigate the properties of oscillations in sunspot groups with varying size and magnetic field, and aim to establish the relationships between sunspot oscillations and its internal structure comparatively. We selected three groups of unipolar sunspot with approximately axial-symmetric magnetic field and calculated their Fourier spectra based on t…
We present comparison of numerical simulations of propagation of MHD waves, excited by subphotospheric perturbations, in two different ("deep" and "shallow") magnetostatic models of the sunspots. The "deep" sunspot model distorts both the shape of the wavefront and its amplitude stronger than the "shallow" model. For both sunspot models, the surface gravity waves (f-mode) are affected by the sunspots stronger than the acoustic p-modes. The wave amplitude inside the sunspot depends on the photospheric strength of the magnetic field and the distance of the source from the sunspot axis. For the so…
Three- and five-minute oscillations of sunspots have different spatial distributions in the solar atmospheric layers. The spatial distributions are crucial to reveal the physical origin of sunspot oscillations and to investigate their propagation. In this study, six sunspots observed by Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly were used to obtain the spatial distributions of three- and five-minute oscillations. The fast Fourier transform method is applied to represent the power spectra of oscillation modes. We find that, from the temperature minimum to the lower corona, the powe…
Three-minute oscillations over sunspot's umbra in AR 11131 were observed simultaneously in UV/EUV emission by SDO/AIA and in radio emission by Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH). We use 24-hours series of SDO and 8-hours series of NoRH observations to study spectral, spatial and temporal variations of pulsations in the 5-9 mHz frequency range at different layers of the solar atmosphere. High spatial and temporal resolution of SDO/AIA in combination with long-duration observations allowed us to trace the variations of the cut-off frequency and spectrum of oscillations across the umbra. We found th…
Waves and oscillations are important solar phenomena, not only because they can propagate and dissipate energy in the chromosphere, but also because they carry information about the structure of the atmosphere in which they propagate. The nature of the three-minute oscillations observed in the umbral region of sunspots is considered to be an effect of propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves upward from below the photosphere. We present a study of sunspot oscillations and wave propagation in NOAA AR 12470 using an approximately one-hour long data set acquired on 2015 December 17 by the A…
We report three-minute oscillations in the solar chromosphere driven by a strong downflow event in a sunspot. We used the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph of the 1.6 m New Solar Telescope and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The strong downflow event is identified in the chromospheric and transition region lines above the sunspot umbra. After the event, oscillations occur at the same region. The amplitude of the Doppler velocity oscillations is 2 km/s, and gradually decreases with time. In addition, the period of the oscillations gradually increases from 2.7 minutes to 3.3 minu…
We present a seismological method to probe the solar atmosphere above sunspot umbrae with three-minute oscillations. Our technique allows us to estimate both the vertical distance between atmospheric layers and the wave-propagation speed without specifying any extra parameters, in particular, the phase speed of the wave or the emission formation heights. Our method uses the projected wave paths of slow MHD waves propagating through the atmospheric layers of different heights and guided by the magnetic field. The length of the projected wave path depends upon the distance between the layers and…
Sunspot umbrae show a change in the dominant period of their oscillations from five minutes in the photosphere to three minutes in the chromosphere. In this paper, we explore the two most popular models proposed to explain the three-minute oscillations: the chromospheric acoustic resonator and the propagation of waves with frequency above the cutoff value directly from lower layers. We employ numerical simulations of wave propagation from the solar interior to the corona. Waves are driven by a piston at the bottom boundary. We have performed a parametric study of the measured chromospheric pow…
Waves observed in the photosphere and chromosphere of sunspots show complex dynamics and spatial patterns. The interpretation of high-resolution sunspot wave observations requires modeling of three-dimensional non-linear wave propagation and mode transformation in the sunspot upper layers in realistic spot model atmospheres. Here we present the first results of such modeling. We have developed a 3D non-linear numerical code specially designed to calculate the response of magnetic structures in equilibrium to an arbitrary perturbation. The code solves the 3D nonlinear MHD equations for perturba…
The umbral oscillations of velocity are commonly observed in the chromosphere of a sunspot. Their sources are considered to be either the external p-mode driving or the internal excitation by magnetoconvection. Even though the possibility of the p-mode driving has been often considered, the internal excitation has been rarely investigated. We report the identification of the oscillation patterns that may be closely related to the events of internal excitation from the observations of velocity oscillations in the temperature minimum region of two sunspots. The velocities were determined from th…
In this work we selected one particular fibril from a high resolution solar chromosphere observation from the Dutch Open Telescope, and tried to obtain a broad picture of the intricate mechanism that might be incorporated in the multiple layer of the Solar atmosphere in high cadence multi-wavelength observation. We analyzed the changingvfibril patter using multi-wavelength tomography, which consists of both H$α$ line center \& the blue wing, Doppler-signal, Ca II H, and the G-band. We have found that the intermittent ejected material through fibril from Doppler images has clearly shown oscilla…
Helioseismic and magnetohydrodynamic waves are abundant in and above sunspots. Through cross-correlating oscillation signals in the photosphere observed by the SDO/HMI, we reconstruct how waves propagate away from virtual wave sources located inside a sunspot. In addition to the usual helioseismic wave, a fast-moving wave is detected traveling along the sunspot's radial direction from the umbra to about 15 Mm beyond the sunspot boundary. The wave has a frequency range of 2.5 - 4.0 mHz with a phase velocity of 45.3 km/s, substantially faster than the typical speeds of Alfven and magnetoacoustic…
Recently, spiral wave patterns (SWPs) have been detected in 3 minute oscillations of sunspot umbrae, but the nature of this phenomenon has remained elusive. We present a theoretical model that interprets the observed SWPs as the superposition of two different azimuthal modes of slow magnetoacoustic waves driven below the surface in an untwisted and non-rotating magnetic cylinder. We apply this model to SWPs of the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity in a pore observed by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph installed at the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope. One- and two-armed SWPs were identified in instan…
The sunspot-associated sources at the frequency of 17 GHz give information on plasma parameters in the regions of magnetic field about B=2000 G at the level of the chromosphere-corona transition region. The observations of short period (from 1 to 10 minutes) oscillations in sunspots reflect propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in the magnetic flux tubes of the sunspots. We investigate the oscillation parameters in active regions in connection with their flare activity. We confirm the existence of a link between the oscillation spectrum and flare activity. We find differences in the o…
Sunspots host a large variety of oscillatory phenomena, whose properties depend on the nature of the wave modes and the magnetic and thermodynamic structure of the spot. Umbral chromospheric oscillations exhibit significant differences compared to their photospheric counterparts. They show an enhanced power and a shorter dominant period, from waves with an amplitude of a few hundred meters per second in the five-minute band at the photosphere, to amplitudes of several kilometers per second in the three-minute band at the chromosphere. Various models have been proposed to explain this behaviour…
We present observations of persistent oscillations of some bright features in the upper-chromosphere/transition-region above sunspots taken by IRIS SJ 1400 Å and upward propagating quasi-periodic disturbances along coronal loops rooted in the same region taken by AIA 171 Å passband. The oscillations of the features are cyclic oscillatory motions without any obvious damping. The amplitudes of the spatial displacements of the oscillations are about 1 $^{"}$. The apparent velocities of the oscillations are comparable to the sound speed in the chromosphere, but the upward motions are slightly larg…
We present results from the investigation of 5-min umbral oscillations in a single-polarity sunspot of active region NOAA 12132. The spectra of TiO, H$α$, and 304 Å are used for corresponding atmospheric heights from the photosphere to lower corona. Power spectrum analysis at the formation height of H$α$ - 0.6 Å to H$α$ center resulted in the detection of 5-min oscillation signals in intensity interpreted as running waves outside the umbral center, mostly with vertical magnetic field inclination $>15°$. A phase-speed filter is used to extract the running wave signals with speed $v_{ph}> 4$ km …
A sunspot acts as a waveguide in response to the dynamics of the solar interior; the trapped waves and oscillations could reveal its thermal and magnetic structures. We study the oscillations in a sunspot intruded by a light bridge, the details of the oscillations could reveal the fine structure of the magnetic topology. We use the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly data to analyse the oscillations in the emission intensity of light bridge plasma at different temperatures and investigate their spatial distributions. The extreme ultraviolet emission intensity exhibits two p…
We investigate how helioseismic waves that originate from effective point sources interact with a sunspot. These waves are reconstructed from observed stochastic wavefields on the Sun by cross-correlating photospheric Doppler-velocity signals. We select the wave sources at different locations relative to the sunspot, and investigate the p- and f-mode waves separately. The results reveal a complicated picture of waveform perturbations caused by the wave interaction with the sunspot. In particular, it is found that for waves originating from outside of the sunspot, p-mode waves travel across the…
We present an investigation of line-of-sight (LOS) velocity oscillations in solar faculae and sunspots. To study the phase relations between chromosphere and photosphere oscillations of the LOS velocity, we measured the time lag of the chromospheric signal relative to the photospheric one for several faculae and sunspots in a set of spectral line pairs. The measured time lags are different for different objects. The mean measured delay between the oscillations in the five-minute band in faculae is 50s for the SiI 10827Å-HeI 10830Å pair; for the pair FeI 6569Å-H-alpha 6563Å the mean delay is 20…
Data analysis of sunspot oscillation based on 6-hr SDO run of observation showed that low frequency (0.2 < ! < 1 mHz) oscillations are local similar to three and five minute oscillations. The oscillations in the sunspot are concentrated in cells of a few arcsec, each of which has its own oscillation spectrum. The analysis of two scenario for sunspot oscillations leads to conclusion that local sunspot oscillations occur due to subphotospheric resonator for slow mhd waves. Empirical models of sunspot atmosphere and the theory of slow waves in thin magnetic flux tubes is applied to the modeling o…
We describe the presence of wavefront dislocations in magnetohydrodynamic waves in stratified stellar atmospheres. Scalar dislocations such as edges and vortices can appear in Alfvén waves, as well as in general magneto-acoustic waves. We detect those dislocations in observations of magnetohydrodynamic waves in sunspots in the solar chromosphere. Through the measured charge of all the dislocations observed, we can give for the first time estimates of the modal contribution in the waves propagating along magnetic fields in solar sunspots.
We address a possibility of the flare process initiation and further maintenance of its energy release due to a transformation of sunspot longitudinal waves into transverse magnetic loop oscillations with initiation of reconnection. This leads to heating maintaining after the energy release peak and formation of a flat stage on the X-ray profile. We applied the time-distance plots and pixel wavelet filtration (PWF) methods to obtain spatio-temporal distribution of wave power variations in SDO/AIA data. To find magnetic waveguides, we used magnetic field extrapolation of SDO/HMI magnetograms. T…
Umbral flashes (UFs) are most common phenomenon of wave processes in sunspots. Studying the relationship between wave time dynamics and the origin of UFs requires further investigation of their fine spatial and height structure. We investigated the association between a short time increase in the variations of three-minute extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission at footpoints of coronal magnetic loops and the UF emergence in sunspot umbra. We applied the pixelized wavelet filtering (PWF) technique to analyse a cube of the images obtained by SDO/AIA at 1600A, 304A, and 171A to study the spatio-tempo…
We present a new method that combines the results of an oscillation study made in optical and radio observations. The optical spectral measurements in photospheric and chromospheric lines of the line-of-sight velocity were carried out at the Sayan Solar Observatory. The radio maps of the Sun were obtained with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph at 1.76 cm. Radio sources associated with the sunspots were analyzed to study the oscillation processes in the chromosphere-corona transition region in the layer with magnetic field B=2000 G. A high level of instability of the oscillations in the optical and …
A sunspot is an ideal waveguide for a variety of magnetohydrodynamic waves, which carry a significant amount of energy to the upper atmosphere and could be used as a tool to probe magnetic and thermal structure of a sunspot. In this study, we used the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and took high-resolution image sequences simultaneously in both TiO (7058$\pm$10 Å) and H$_α$ (6562$\pm$2.5 Å) bandpasses. We extracted the area and total emission intensity variations of sunspot umbra and analyzed the signals with synchrosqueezing transform. We found that the area and emission intensity varied with bot…
The X-3.4 class flare of 13 December 2006 was observed with a high cadence of 2 minutes at 0.2 arc-sec resolution by HINODE/SOT FG instrument. The flare ribbons could be seen in G-band images also. A careful analysis of these observations after proper registration of images show flare related changes in penumbral filaments of the associated sunspot, for the first time. The observations of sunspot deformation, decay of penumbral area and changes in magnetic flux during large flares have been reported earlier in the literature. In this Letter, we report lateral motion of the penumbral filaments …
We present simultaneous photospheric and chromospheric observations of the trailing sunspot in NOAA 10904, obtained with the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST) La Palma, Canary Islands. Time series of high resolution \ion{Ca}{ii}\,$H$ images show transient jet-like structures in sunspot umbrae are elongated, which we call umbral microjets. These jets are directed roughly parallel to nearby penumbral microjets, suggesting that they are aligned with the background magnetic field. In general, first a bright dot-like structure appears, from which a jet later emerges, although some jets appear without a…
We present the results of high resolution co-temporal and co-spatial photospheric and chromospheric observations of sunspot penumbral intrusions. The data was taken with the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST) on the Canary Islands. Time series of Ca\,II H images show a series of transient jets extending roughly 3000 km above a penumbral intrusion into the umbra. For most of the time series jets were seen along the whole length of the intruding bright filament. Some of these jets develop a clear $λ$-shaped structure, with a small loop appearing at their footpoint and lasting for around a minute. In …
We present the first observations of spatially resolved oscillation sources obtained with the Siberian Radioheliograph (SRH) at 3-6 GHz. We have found significant flux oscillations with periods of about 3, 5 and 13 minutes emitted from AR12833. The 3-minute periodicity dominates at higher frequencies. It was found that the apparent level of oscillations depends on the active region location on the disc, and scales down towards the limbs. The oscillations were studied in detail during one hour interval on June 19, 2021. We found that sources of 3-min oscillations were located above the umbra an…
We analyse the temporal evolution of the inclination component of the magnetic field vector for the penumbral area of 25 isolated sunspots. Compared to previous works, the use of data from the HMI instrument aboard the SDO observatory facilitates the study of very long time series ($\approx$1 week), compared to previous works, with a good spatial and temporal resolution. We used the wavelet technique and we found some filamentary-shaped events with large wavelet power. Their distribution of periods is broad, ranging from the lower limit for this study of 48 minutes up to 63 hours. An interesti…
We study the velocity field of umbral dots at a resolution of 0.14". Our analysis is based on full Stokes spectropolarimetric measurements of a pore taken with the CRISP instrument at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. We determine the flow velocity at different heights in the photosphere from a bisector analysis of the Fe I 630 nm lines. In addtion, we use the observed Stokes Q, U, and V profiles to characterize the magnetic properties of these structures. We find that most umbral dots are associated with strong upflows in deep photospheric layers. Some of them also show concentrated patches of…
The acoustic resonator is an important model for explaining the three-minute oscillations in the chromosphere above sunspot umbrae. The steep temperature gradients at the photosphere and transition region provide the cavity for the acoustic resonator, which allows waves to be both partially transmitted and partially reflected. In this paper, a new method of estimating the size and temperature profile of the chromospheric cavity above a sunspot umbra is developed. The magnetic field above umbrae is modelled numerically in 1.5D with slow magnetoacoustic wave trains travelling along magnetic fiel…
High spatial and temporal resolution images of a sunspot, obtained simultaneously in multiple optical and UV wavelengths, are employed to study the propagation and damping characteristics of slow magnetoacoustic waves up to transition region heights. Power spectra are generated from intensity oscillations in sunspot umbra, across multiple atmospheric heights, for frequencies up to a few hundred mHz. It is observed that the power spectra display a power-law dependence over the entire frequency range, with a significant enhancement around 5.5 mHz found for the chromospheric channels. The phase-d…
We present and discuss multi-wavelength observations of five homologous recurrent solar jets that occurred in active region NOAA 11133 on 11 December, 2010. These jets were well observed by the Solar Dynamic observatory (SDO) with high spatial and temporal resolution. The speed of the jets ranged between 86 and 267 km/s. A type III radio burst was observed in association with all the five jets. The investigation of the over all evolution of magnetic field in the source regions suggested that the flux was continuously emerging on longer term. However, all the jets but J5 were triggered during a…
A light bridge is a prominent structure commonly observed within a sunspot. Its presence usually triggers a wealth of dynamics in a sunspot, and has a lasting impact on sunspot evolution. However, the fundamental structure of light bridges is still not well understood. In this study, we used the high-resolution spectropolarimetry data obtained by the Solar Optical Telescope onboard the Hinode satellite to analyze the magnetic and thermal structure of a light bridge at \AR. We also combined the high-cadence $1700\unitÅ$ channel data provided by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar…
We detected peaks of oscillatory power at 3 and ~6.5 minutes in the umbra of the central sunspot of the active region NOAA AR 10707 in data obtained in the near infrared (NIR) continuum at 1565.7 nm. The NIR dataset captured umbral dynamics around 50 km below the photospheric level. The umbra does not oscillate as a whole, but rather in distinct parts that are distributed over the umbral surface. The most powerful oscillations, close to a period of ~ 6.5, do not propagate upward. We noted a plethora of large umbral dots that persisted for more than 30 minutes and stayed in the same locations. …
Recent high-resolution observations reveal that subarcsecond bright dots (BDs) with sub-minute lifetimes appears ubiquitously in the transition region (TR) above sunspot penumbra. The presence of penumbral micro-jets (PMJs) in the chromosphere have also been reported earlier. It was proposed that both the PMJs and BDs are formed due to magnetic reconnection process and may play an important role in heating of the penumbra. Using simultaneous observation of the chromosphere from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard Hinode and the TR from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), we …
We infer the depth of the internal sources giving rise to three-minute umbral oscillations. Recent observations of ripple-like velocity patterns of umbral oscillations supported the notion that there exist internal sources exciting the umbral oscillations. We adopt the hypothesis that the fast magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves generated at a source below the photospheric layer propagate along different paths, reach the surface at different times, and excited slow MHD waves by mode conversion. These slow MHD waves are observed as the ripples that apparently propagate horizontally. The propagation…
It is well-known that light bridges inside a sunspot produce small-scale plasma ejections and transient brightenings in the chromosphere, but the nature and origin of such phenomena are still unclear. Utilizing the high-spatial and high temporal resolution spectral data taken with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph and the TiO 7057 A broadband filter images installed at the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope of Big Bear Solar Observatory, we report arcsecond-scale chromospheric plasma ejections (1.7 arc) inside a light bridge. Interestingly, the ejections are found to be a manifestation of upwardl…
We analyse intensity variations, as measured by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) in the 171 Å passband, in two coronal loops embedded within a single coronal magnetic arcade. We detect oscillations in the fundamental mode with periods of roughly 2 minutes and decay times of 5 minutes. The oscillations were initiated by interaction of the arcade with a large wavefront issuing from a flare site. Further, the power spectra of the oscillations evince signatures consistent with oblique propagation to the field lines and for the existence of a 2-D waveguide instead of a 1-D one.
We used the flux calibrated images through the Broad Band Filter Imager and Stokes Polarimeter data obtained with the Solar Optical Telescope onboard the Hinode spacecraft to study the properties of bright points in and around the sunspots. The well isolated bright points were selected and classified as umbral dot, peripheral umbral dot, penumbral grains and G-band bright point depending on their location. Most of the bright points are smaller than about 150 km. The larger points are mostly associated with the penumbral features. The bright points are not uniformly distributed over the umbra b…
We analyze the high-resolution observations from the 1.6m telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory that cover an active region filament. Counter-streaming motions are clearly observed in the filament. The northern end of the counter-streaming motions extends to a light bridge, forming a spectacular circulation pattern around a sunspot, with clockwise motion in the blue wing and counterclockwise motion in the red wing as observed in Halpha off-bands. The apparent speed of the flow is around 10 to 60 km/s in the filament, decreasing to 5 to 20 km/s in the light bridge. The most intriguing results…
By focusing on the oscillations of the cross-sectional area and the intensity of magnetic waveguides located in the lower solar atmosphere, we aim to detect and identify magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) sausage waves. Capturing several series of high-resolution images of pores and sunspots and employing wavelet analysis in conjunction with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) makes the MHD wave analysis possible. For this paper, two sunspots and one pore (with a light bridge) were chosen as representative examples of MHD waveguides in the lower solar atmosphere. The sunspots and pore display a range of…
We use high spatial and temporal resolution observations, simultaneously obtained with the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, to investigate the high-frequency oscillations above a sunspot umbra. A novel time--frequency analysis method, namely the synchrosqueezing transform (SST), is employed to represent their power spectra and to reconstruct the high-frequency signals at different solar atmospheric layers. A validation study with synthetic signals demonstrates that SST is capable to resolving weak signals even when their…
We analyze and model total solar irradiance variability on time scales from minutes to months, excluding variations due to p-mode oscillations, using a combination of convective and magnetic components. These include granulation, the magnetic network, faculae and sunspots. Analysis of VIRGO data shows that on periods of a day or longer solar variability depends on magnetic activity, but is nearly independent at shorter periods. We assume that only granulation affects the solar irradiance variability on time scales from minutes to hours. Granulation is described as a large sample of bright cell…
Light bridges (LBs) are among the most striking sub-structures in sunspots, where various activities have been revealed by recent high-resolution observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). According to the variety of physical properties, we classified these activities into four distinct categories: transient brightening (TB), intermittent jet (IJ), type-I light wall (LW-I), and type-II light wall (LW-II). In IRIS 1400/1330 Å observations, TBs are characterized by abrupt emission enhancements, and IJs appear as collimated plasma ejections with a width of 1-2 Mm at some …
We study the formation of a sunspot penumbra in the active region NOAA11024. We simultaneously observed the Stokes parameters of the photospheric iron lines at 1089.6 nm with the TIP and 617.3 nm with the GFPI spectropolarimeters along with broad-band images using G-band and CaIIK filters at the German VTT. The formation of the penumbra is intimately related to the inclined magnetic field. Within 4.5 h observing time, the magnetic flux of the penumbra increases from 9.7E+20 to 18.2E+20 Mx, while the magnetic flux of the umbra remains constant at about 3.8E+20 Mx. Magnetic flux in the immediate…
The Visible Spectro-Polarimeter (ViSP) of the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) collected its Science Verification data on May 7-8, 2021. The instrument observed multiple layers of a sunspot atmosphere simultaneously, in passbands of Ca-II 397 nm (H-line), Fe-I 630 nm, and Ca-II 854 nm, scanning the region with a spatial sampling of 0.041" and average temporal cadence of 7.76 seconds, for a 38.8 minute duration. The slit moves southward across the plane-of-the-sky at 3.83 km/s. The spectropolarimetric scans exhibit prominent oscillatory 'ridge' structures which lie nearly perpendicu…
Aims. To understand the morphology of the chromosphere in sunspot umbra. We investigate if the horizontal structures observed in the spectral core of the Ca II H line are ephemeral visuals caused by the shock dynamics of more stable structures, and examine their relationship with observables in the H-alpha line. Methods. Filtergrams in the core of the Ca II H and H-alpha lines as observed with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope are employed. We utilise a technique that creates composite images and tracks the flash propagation horizontally. Results. We find 0"15 wide horizontal structures, in all …
The Sun's polar magnetic fields are directly related to solar cycle variability. The strength of the polar fields at the start (minimum) of a cycle determine the subsequent amplitude of that cycle. In addition, the polar field reversals at cycle maximum alter the propagation of galactic cosmic rays throughout the heliosphere in fundamental ways. We describe a surface magnetic flux transport model that advects the magnetic flux emerging in active regions (sunspots) using detailed observations of the near-surface flows that transport the magnetic elements. These flows include the axisymmetric di…
