The first inflationary model conceived was the one proposed by Starobinsky which includes an additional term quadratic in the Ricci-scalar R in the Einstein-Hilbert action. The model is now considered a target for several future cosmic microwave background experiments given its compatibility with current observational data. In this paper, we analyse the robustness of the Starobinsky inflation by inserting it into a generalized scenario based on a $β$-Starobinsky inflation potential, which is motivated through brane inflation. In the Einstein frame, the generalized model recovers the original model for $β=0$, whereas $\forall β\neq 0$ represents an extended class of models that admit a wider range of solutions. We investigate limits on $β$ from current cosmic microwave background and baryonic acoustic oscillation data and find that only a small deviation from the original scenario is allowed, $β=-0.08 \pm 0.12$ (68% C.L.), which is fully compatible with zero and confirms the robustness of the Starobinsky inflationary model in light of current observations.
We propose a one-parametric extension of the Starobinsky $R+R^2$ model by adding the $(R+m^2β^2)^{3/2}$ term. The parameter $m$ is the inflaton mass, which is determined in the same way as in the Starobinsky model, and $β$ is a dimensionless constant. Using the Einstein frame and the scalar field potential, we get the inflationary parameters of the model proposed. The value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can be significantly larger than in the Starobinsky model. The considered inflationary model is in a good agreement with the current observational data. The corresponding scalar field poten…
In this work we solved the equation of scalar and tensor perturbations for the generalized Starobinsky inflationary model using the improved uniform approximation method and the phase-integral method up to third-order in deviation. We compare our results with the numerical integration. We have obtained that both semiclassical methods reproduce the scalar power spectra $P_{S,T}$, the scalar spectral index $n_S$, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. Also we present our results in the $(n_S,r)$ plane.
We analyse $f(R)$ theories of gravity from a dynamical system perspective, showing how the $R^2$ correction in Starobinsky's model plays a crucial role from the viewpoint of the inflationary paradigm. Then, we propose a modification of Starobinsky's model by adding an exponential term in the $f(R)$ Lagrangian. We show how this modification could allow to test the robustness of the model by means of the predictions on the scalar spectral index $n_s$.
We investigate the pre-inflationary dynamics of inflation with the Starobinsky potential, favored by recent data from the Planck mission, using techniques developed to study cosmological perturbations on quantum spacetimes in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. We find that for a large part of the initial data, inflation compatible with observations occurs. There exists a subset of this initial data that leads to quantum gravity signatures that are potentially observable. Interestingly, despite the different inflationary dynamics, these quantum gravity corrections to the powerspectra are …
The production of GWs during preheating in the Starobinsky model with a nonminimally coupled auxiliary scalar field is studied through the lattice simulation in this paper. We find that the GW spectrum $Ω_{\rm gw}$ grows fast with the increase of the absolute value of coupling parameter $ξ$. This is because the resonant bands become broad with the increase of $|ξ|$. When $ξ<0$, $Ω_{\rm gw}$ begins to grow once the inflation ends and grows faster than the case of $ξ>0$. $Ω_{\rm gw}$ reaches the maximum at $ξ=-20$ ($ξ=42$ for the case $ξ>0$) and then decreases with slight oscillation. Furthermor…
The $R^2$ term in the Starobinsky inflationary model can be regarded as a leading quantum correction to the gravitational effective action. We assume that parity-preserving and parity-violating (axial) non-minimal couplings between curvature and electromagnetic field are also present in the effective action. In the Einstein frame, they turn into non-trivial couplings of the scalaron and curvature to the electromagnetic field. We make an assessment of inflationary magnetogenesis in this model. In the case of parity-preserving couplings, amplification of magnetic field is negligibly small. In th…
An extension of the Starobinsky model is proposed. Besides the usual Starobinsky Lagrangian, a term proportional to the derivative of the scalar curvature, $\nabla_μR\nabla^μR$, is considered. The analyzis is done in the Einstein frame with the introduction of a scalar field and a vector field. We show that inflation is attainable in our model, allowing for a graceful exit. We also build the cosmological perturbations and obtain the leading-order curvature power spectrum, scalar and tensor tilts and tensor-to-scalar ratio. The tensor and curvature power spectrums are compared to the most recen…
The 2015 Planck data release has placed tight constraints on the allowed class of inflationary models. The current data favors concave downwards inflationary potentials while offering interesting hints on possible deviations from the standard picture of CMB perturbations. We here test the predictions of the theory of the origin of the universe from the landscape multiverse, against the most recent Planck data, for the case of concave downwards inflationary potentials, such as the Starobinsky model of inflation. By considering the quantum entanglement correction of the multiverse, we can place …
Recently, the nonperturbative quantization scheme of loop quantum gravity has been extended to the Brans-Dicke theory and the corresponding loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology has been derived, which provides an essential platform to explore inflationary models in this framework. In this paper, we consider two inflation models, the Starobinsky and $α$-attractor inflation whose cosmological predictions are in excellent agreement with Planck data, and study systematically their pre-inflationary dynamics as well as the slow-roll inflation. We show that for both models, the background evolution of …
Cosmological solutions derived by Nariai and Tomita (1971) and by Starobinsky (1980) are compared, and it is shown that the former derived de Sitter expansion in the R^2 modified gravity (without cosmological constant) at the earliest stage, and nine years later the latter derived the well-known inflationary solution. Next the property of their simplified models is described using the method of conformal transformations, and how the inflation arises and the singularity is avoided is shown. Finally the initial and final states of the inflation are discussed.
The recent CMB data from Planck and BICEP2 observations have opened a new window for inflationary cosmology. In this Essay we compare three Starobinsky-like inflationary scenarios: (i) the original Starobinsky proposal; (ii) a family of dynamically broken SUGRA models; and (iii) a class of "decaying" vacuum $Λ(H)$ cosmologies. We then focus on the $Λ(H)$ variant, which spans the complete cosmic history of the universe from an early inflationary stage, followed by the "graceful exit" into the standard radiation regime, the matter epoch and, finally, the late-time accelerated expansion. Computin…

A problematic feature of low energy scale inflationary models, such as Starobinsky inflation, in a spatially closed universe is the occurrence of a recollapse and a big crunch singularity before inflation can even set in. In a recent work it was shown that this problem can be successfully resolved in loop quantum cosmology for a large class of initial conditions due to a non-singular cyclic evolution and a hysteresis-like phenomena. However, for certain highly unfavorable initial conditions the onset of inflation was still difficult to obtain. In this work, we explore the role of dissipative p…
We consider the simplest extension to the Starobinsky model, by allowing an extra scalar field to help drive inflation. We perform our analysis in the Einstein frame and calculate the power spectra at the end of inflation to second order in the slow--roll parameters. We find that the model gives predictions in great agreement with the current Planck data without the need for fine-tuning. Our results encourage current efforts to embed the model in a supergravity setting.
We point out that the ability of some models of inflation, such as Higgs inflation and the universal attractor models, in reproducing the available data is due to their relation to the Starobinsky model of inflation. For large field values, where the inflationary phase takes place, all these classes of models are indeed identical to the Starobinsky model. Nevertheless, the inflaton is just an auxiliary field in the Jordan frame of the Starobinsky model and this leads to two important consequences: first, the inflationary predictions of the Starobinsky model and its descendants are slightly dif…
In this paper we point out that Starobinky inflation could be induced by quantum effects due to a large non-minimal coupling of the Higgs boson to the Ricci scalar. The Higgs Starobinsky mechanism provides a solution to issues attached to large Higgs field values in the early universe which in a metastable universe would not be a viable option. We verify explicitly that these large quantum corrections do not destabilize Starobinsky's potential.
The most current observational data corroborate the Starobinsky model as one of the strongest candidates in the description of an inflationary regime. Motivated by such success, extensions of the Starobinsky model have been increasingly recurrent in the literature. The theoretical justification for this is well grounded: higher-order gravities arise in high-energy physics in the search for the ultraviolet completeness of general relativity. In this paper, we propose to investigate the inflation due to the extension of the Starobinsky model characterized by the inclusion of the $R^{3}$ term. We…

Recent cosmic microwave background observations favor low energy scale inflationary models in a closed universe. However, onset of inflation in such models for a closed universe is known to be severely problematic. In particular, such a universe recollapses within a few Planck seconds and encounters a big crunch singularity when initial conditions are given in the Planck regime. We show that this problem of onset of inflation in low energy scale inflationary models can be successfully overcome in a quantum gravitational framework where the big bang/big crunch singularities are resolved and a n…
We investigate inflationary attractor points by analyzing non-minimally coupled single field inflation models in two opposite limits; the `flat' limit in which the first derivative of the conformal factor is small and the `steep' limit, in which the first derivative of the conformal factor is large. We consider a subset of models that yield Starobinsky inflation in the steep conformal factor, strong coupling, limit and demonstrate that they result in chaotic inflation in the opposite flat, weak coupling, limit. The suppression of higher order powers of the inflaton field in the potential is sh…
We investigate the production of primordial black holes and their contribution to the presently observed dark matter in a dilaton two-field extension of Starobinsky's quadratic $f(R)$ model of inflation. The model features a multi-field amplification mechanism which leads to the generation of a sharp peak in the inflationary power spectrum at small wavelengths responsible for the production of primordial black holes. This mechanism is significantly different from single-field models and requires a stochastic treatment during an intermediate phase of the inflationary dynamics. We find that the …
Motivated by the recent observation of the B-mode signal in the cosmic microwave background by BICEP2, we stuty the Starobinsky-type inflation model in the framework of old-minimal supergravity, where the inflaton field in the original (non-supersymmetric) Starobinsky inflation model becomes a complex field. We study how the inflaton evolves on the two-dimensional field space, varying the initial condition. We show that (i) one of the scalar fields has a very steep potential once the trajectory is off from that of the original Starobinsky inflation, and that (ii) the B-mode signal observed by …
The Starobinsky inflation model is one of the simplest inflation models that is consistent with the cosmic microwave background observations. In order to explain dark matter of the universe, we consider a minimal extension of the Starobinsky inflation model with introducing the dark sector which communicates with the visible sector only via the gravitational interaction. In Starobinsky inflation model, a sizable amount of dark-sector particle may be produced by the inflaton decay. Thus, a scalar, a fermion or a vector boson in the dark sector may become dark matter. We pay particular attention…
We consider a non-canonic field in the context of Starobinsky inflation. We work in Einstein-frame. In this frame, the gravitational part of the action is equivalent to the Hilbert-Einstein action, plus a scalar field called scalaron. We investigate a model with a heavy scalaron trapped at the effective potential minimum, where its fluctuations are negligible. To be more explicit, we consider a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) field, which is usually considered within the brane inflation context, as the non-canonic field. Although, the DBI field governs inflation through implicit dependence on Scalaron…
Models of cosmological inflation resembling the Starobinsky R + R^2 model emerge naturally among the effective potentials derived from no-scale SU(N,1)/SU(N) x U(1) supergravity when N > 1. We display several examples in the SU(2,1)/SU(2) x U(1) case, in which the inflaton may be identified with either a modulus field or a matter field. We discuss how the modulus field may be stabilized in models in which a matter field plays the role of the inflaton. We also discuss models that generalize the Starobinsky model but display different relations between the tilt in the spectrum of scalar density …
Using a no-scale supergravity framework, we construct an SO(10) model that makes predictions for cosmic microwave background observables similar to those of the Starobinsky model of inflation, and incorporates a double-seesaw model for neutrino masses consistent with oscillation experiments and late-time cosmology. We pay particular attention to the behaviour of the scalar fields during inflation and the subsequent reheating.
In the context of dynamical breaking of local supersymmetry (supergravity), including the Deser-Zumino super-Higgs effect, for the simple but quite representative cases of N=1, D=4 supergravity, we discuss the emergence of Starobinsky-type inflation, due to quantum corrections in the effective action arising from integrating out gravitino fields in their massive phase. This type of inflation may occur after a first-stage small-field inflation that characterises models near the origin of the one-loop effective potential, and it may occur at the non-trivial minima of the latter. Phenomenological…
In the context of effective theories of gravity, a minimalist bottom-up approach which takes into account $1$-loop quantum corrections leads to modifications in the Einstein-Hilbert action through the inclusion of four extra terms: $R^{2}$, $C_{κραβ}C^{κραβ}$, $R\ln\left( \square\right) R$ and $C_{κραβ}\ln\left( \square\right) C^{κραβ}$. The first two terms are necessary to guarantee the renormalizability of the gravitational theory, and the last two terms (nonlocal terms) arise from the integration of massless/light matter fields. This work aims to analyze how one of the nonlocal terms, namel…
In this work, we studied the slow-roll approximation of cosmic inflation within the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity, where $R$ is the scalar curvature, and $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. By choosing a minimal coupling between matter and gravity, we obtained the modified slow-roll parameters, the scalar spectral index ($n_s$), the tensor spectral index ($n_{\textrm{T}}$), and the tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$). We computed these quantities for a general power-law potential, Natural & Quartic Hilltop inflation, and the Starobinsky model, plotting the trajectories on the $(n_s,r)$ plan…
We study several extensions of the Starobinsky model of inflation, which obey all observational constraints on the inflationary parameters, by demanding that both the inflaton scalar potential in the Einstein frame and the $F(R)$ gravity function in the Jordan frame have the explicit dependence upon fields {\it and} parameters in terms of elementary functions. Our models are continuously connected to the original Starobinsky model via changing the parameters. We modify the Starobinsky $(R+R^2)$ model by adding an $R^3$-term, an $R^4$-term, and an $R^{3/2}$-term, respectively, and calculate the…
We present a model for cosmological inflation based on a no-scale supergravity sector with an SU(2,1)/U(1) Kahler potential, a single modulus T and an inflaton superfield Phi described by a Wess-Zumino model with superpotential parameters (mu, lambda). This model yields a scalar spectral index n_s and a tensor-to-scalar ratio r that are compatible with the Planck measurements for values of lambda simeq mu/3M_P. For the specific choice lambda = mu/3M_P, the model is a no-scale supergravity realization of the R+R^2 Starobinsky model.
A self-consistent pre-inflationary extension of the inflationary scenario with the Starobinsky potential, favored by Planck data, is studied using techniques from loop quantum cosmology (LQC). The results are compared with the quadratic potential previously studied. Planck scale completion of the inflationary paradigm and observable signatures of LQC are found to be robust under the change of the inflaton potential. The entire evolution, from the quantum bounce all the way to the end of inflation, is compatible with observations. Occurrence of desired slow-roll phase is almost inevitable and n…
Superstring/M-theory is the theory of quantum gravity that can provide the UV-completion to viable inflation models. We modify the Starobinsky inflation model by adding the Bel-Robinson tensor $T^{μνλρ}$ squared term proposed as the leading quantum correction inspired by superstring theory. The $(R+\frac{1}{6m^2}R^2 -\fracβ{8m^6}T^2)$ model under consideration has two parameters: the inflaton mass $m$ and the string-inspired positive parameter $β$. We derive the equations of motion in the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe and investigate its solutions. We find the physical bounds on…
We propose a simple modification of the no-scale supergravity Wess-Zumino model of Starobinsky-like inflation to include a Polonyi term in the superpotential. The purpose of this term is to provide an explicit mechanism for supersymmetry breaking at the end of inflation. We show how successful inflation can be achieved for a gravitino mass satisfying the strict upper bound $m_{3/2}< 10^3$ TeV, with favoured values $m_{3/2}\lesssim\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV. The model suggests that SUSY may be discovered in collider physics experiments such as the LHC or the FCC.
The epochs of reheating and preheating are studied in a simple extension of the Starobinsky inflationary model, which consists of an $R^2$--correction to the Einstein--Hilbert action and an additional scalar field. We find that if the $R^2$--correction at the end of inflation is dynamically important, it affects the expansion rate and as a consequence the reheating and preheating processes. While we find that the reheating temperature and duration of reheating are only slightly affected, the effect has to be taken into account when comparing the theory to data. In the case of preheating, the g…
Measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) favour models of inflation with a small tensor-to-scalar ratio r, as predicted by the Starobinsky R + R^2 model. It has been shown previously that various models based on no-scale supergravity with different forms of superpotential make predictions similar to those of the Starobinsky model. In this paper we present a unified and general treatment of Starobinsky avatars of no-scale supergravity, using the underlying non-compact SU(2,1)/SU(2) x U(1) symmetry to demonstrate equivalences between different models, exhibiting 6 specific equivalen…
We point out that in the large field regime, the recently proposed superconformal D-term inflation model coincides with the Starobinsky model. In this regime, the inflaton field dominates over the Planck mass in the gravitational kinetic term in the Jordan frame. Slow-roll inflation is realized in the large field regime for sufficiently large gauge couplings. The Starobinsky model generally emerges as an effective description of slow-roll inflation if a Jordan frame exists where, for large inflaton field values, the action is scale invariant and the ratio \hat λ of the inflaton self-coupling a…
Analytic infinite derivative (AID) non-local quadratic curvature gravity in Weyl basis is known to be ghost free, superrenormalizable or finite and perturbatively Unitary and as such it is Ultra-Violet (UV) complete. Recently $R+R^2$ ("Starobinsky") inflation was successfully embedded in AID non-local gravity and the corresponding observables were computed. Here in this paper, we derive the form factors compatible within near de Sitter aproaximation and prove that the theory must contain a scalaron that drives inflationary expansion. Further more we consider the form factors (AID non-local ope…
The Starobinsky model is one of the inflation models consistent with the result of CMB observation by the Planck satellite. We consider the dynamics of the Starobinsky inflation in the presence of another scalar field with a large expectation value during inflation due to a negative Hubble-induced mass. We find that it would be affected if the other field has an amplitude close to the Planck scale. In this case, we may observe such effects on the Starobinsky model by future CMB experiments.
In the Starobinsky model of inflation, the observed dark matter abundance can be produced from the direct decay of the inflaton field only in a very narrow spectrum of close-to-conformal scalar fields and spinors of mass $\sim 10^7$ GeV. This spectrum can be, however, significantly broadened in the presence of effective non-renormalizable interactions between the dark and the visible sectors. In particular, we show that UV freeze-in can efficiently generate the right dark matter abundance for a large range of masses spanning from the keV to the PeV scale and arbitrary spin, without significant…
