The focus of the present research is on the analysis of local energy stability of high-order (including split-form) summation-by-parts methods, with e.g. two-point entropy-conserving fluxes, approximating non-linear conservation laws. Our main finding is that local energy stability, i.e., the numerical growth rate does not exceed the growth rate of the continuous problem, is not guaranteed even when the scheme is non-linearly stable and that this may have adverse implications for simulation results. We show that entropy-conserving two-point fluxes are inherently locally energy unstable, as they can be dissipative or anti-dissipative. Unfortunately, these fluxes are at the core of many commonly used high-order entropy-stable extensions, including split-form summation-by-parts discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods (or spectral collocation methods). For the non-linear Burgers equation, we further demonstrate numerically that such schemes cause exponential growth of errors during the simulation. Furthermore, we encounter a similar abnormal behaviour for the compressible Euler equations, for a smooth exact solution of a density wave. Finally, for the same case, we demonstrate numerically that other commonly known split-forms, such as the Kennedy and Gruber splitting, are also locally energy unstable.
High order entropy stable schemes provide improved robustness for computational simulations of fluid flows. However, additional stabilization and positivity preserving limiting can still be required for variable-density flows with under-resolved features. We demonstrate numerically that entropy stable DG methods which incorporate an "entropy projection" are less likely to require additional limiting to retain positivity for certain types of flows. We conclude by investigating potential explanations for this observed improvement in robustness.
We present a high-order entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin (ESDG) method for nonlinear conservation laws on both multi-dimensional domains and on networks constructed from one-dimensional domains. These methods utilize treatments of multi-dimensional interfaces and network junctions which retain entropy stability when coupling together entropy stable discretizations. Numerical experiments verify the stability of the proposed schemes, and comparisons with fully 2D implementations demonstrate the accuracy of each type of junction treatment.
Entropy stable schemes ensure that physically meaningful numerical solutions also satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality under appropriate boundary conditions. In this work, we describe a discretization of viscous terms in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which enables a simple and explicit imposition of entropy stable no-slip (adiabatic and isothermal) and reflective (symmetry) wall boundary conditions for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Numerical results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.
In this article, we propose high order discontinuous Galerkin entropy stable schemes for ten-moment Gaussian closure equations, which is based on the suitable quadrature rules (see [8]). The key components of the proposed method are the use of an entropy conservative numerical flux [31] in each cell and a suitable entropy stable numerical flux at the cell edges. This is then used in the entropy stable DG framework of [8] to obtain entropy stability of the semi-discrete scheme. We also extend these schemes to a source term that models plasma laser interaction. For the time discretization, we us…
High-order accurate, $\textit{entropy stable}$ numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws have attracted much interest over the last decade, but only a few rigorous convergence results are available, particularly in multiple space dimensions. In this paper we show how the entropy stability of one such method yields a (weak) bound on oscillations, and using compensated compactness we prove convergence to a weak solution satisfying at least one entropy condition.
Recently, it was discovered that the entropy-conserving/dissipative high-order split-form discontinuous Galerkin discretizations have robustness issues when trying to solve the simple density wave propagation example for the compressible Euler equations. The issue is related to missing local linear stability, i.e. the stability of the discretization towards perturbations added to a stable base flow. This is strongly related to an anti-diffusion mechanism, that is inherent in entropy-conserving two-point fluxes, which are a key ingredient for the high-order discontinuous Galerkin extension. In …
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
High order schemes are known to be unstable in the presence of shock discontinuities or under-resolved solution features, and have traditionally required additional filtering, limiting, or artificial viscosity to avoid solution blow up. Entropy stable schemes address this instability by ensuring that physically relevant solutions satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of discretization parameters. However, additional measures must be taken to ensure that solutions satisfy physical constraints such as positivity. In this work, we present a high order entropy stable discontinuo…
The construction of high order entropy stable collocation schemes on quadrilateral and hexahedral elements has relied on the use of Gauss-Legendre-Lobatto collocation points and their equivalence with summation-by-parts (SBP) finite difference operators. In this work, we show how to efficiently generalize the construction of semi-discretely entropy stable schemes on tensor product elements to Gauss points and generalized SBP operators. Numerical experiments suggest that the use of Gauss points significantly improves accuracy on curved meshes.
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…
The paper describes the construction of entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin difference (DGD) discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws on unstructured grids. The construction takes advantage of existing theory for entropy-stable summation-by-parts (SBP) discretizations. In particular, the paper shows how DGD discretizations -- both linear and nonlinear -- can be constructed by defining the SBP trial and test functions in terms of interpolated DGD degrees of freedom. In the case of entropy-stable discretizations, the entropy variables rather than the conservative variables must be inte…
Entropy stable schemes replicate an entropy inequality at the semi-discrete level. These schemes rely on an algebraic summation-by-parts (SBP) structure and a technique referred to as flux differencing. We provide simple and efficient formulas for Jacobian matrices for the semi-discrete systems of ODEs produced by entropy stable discretizations. These formulas are derived based on the structure of flux differencing and derivatives of flux functions, which can be computed using automatic differentiation (AD). Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and utility of these Jacobian formulas, w…
In this paper, we present an entropy-stable Gauss collocation discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method on 3D curvilinear meshes for the GLM-MHD equations: the single-fluid magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations with a generalized Lagrange multiplier (GLM) divergence cleaning mechanism. For the continuous entropy analysis to hold and to ensure Galilean invariance in the divergence cleaning technique, the GLM-MHD system requires the use of non-conservative terms. Traditionally, entropy-stable DG discretizations have used a collocated nodal variant of the DG method, also known as the discontinuous Galer…
Reduced order models of nonlinear conservation laws in fluid dynamics do not typically inherit stability properties of the full order model. We introduce projection-based hyper-reduced models of nonlinear conservation laws which are globally conservative and inherit a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of the choice of basis and choice of parameters.
High order entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws satisfy an inherent discrete entropy inequality. The construction of such schemes has relied on the use of carefully chosen nodal points or volume and surface quadrature rules to produce operators which satisfy a summation-by-parts (SBP) property. In this work, we show how to construct "modal" skew-symmetric DG formulations which are entropy stable for volume and surface quadratures under which a traditional SBP property does not hold. These skew-symmetric formulations avoid the use of a "strong" matr…
We propose two novel two-state approximate Riemann solvers for the compressible Euler equations which are provably entropy dissipative and suitable for the simulation of low Mach numbers. What is new, is that one of our two methods in addition is provably kinetic energy stable. Both methods are based on the entropy satisfying and kinetic energy consistent methods of Chandrashekar (2013). The low Mach number compliance is achieved by rescaling some speed of sound terms in the diffusion matrix in the spirit of Li & Gu (2008). In numerical tests we demonstrate the low Mach number compliance and t…
In this work a non-conservative balance law formulation is considered that encompasses the rotating, compressible Euler equations for dry atmospheric flows. We develop a semi-discretely entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin method on curvilinear meshes using a generalization of flux differencing for numerical fluxes in fluctuation form. The method uses the skew-hybridized formulation of the element operators to ensure that, even in the presence of under-integration on curvilinear meshes, the resulting discretization is entropy stable. Several atmospheric flow test cases in one, two, and three …
The flux reconstruction (FR) method has gained popularity in the research community as it recovers promising high-order methods through modally filtered correction fields, such as the discontinuous Galerkin method, amongst others, on unstructured grids over complex geometries. Moreover, FR schemes, specifically energy stable FR (ESFR) schemes also known as Vincent-Castonguay-Jameson-Huynh schemes, have proven attractive as they allow for design flexibility as well as stability proofs for the linear advection problem on affine elements. Additionally, split forms have recently seen a resurgence …
Nonlinear entropy stability analysis is used to derive entropy stable no-slip wall boundary conditions for the Eulerian model proposed by Svärd (Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2018). and its spatial discretization based on entropy stable collocated discontinuous Galerkin operators with the summation-by-parts property for unstructured grids. A set of viscous test cases of increasing complexity are simulated using both the Eulerian and the classic compressible Navier-Stokes models. The numerical results obtained with the two models are compared, and differences and simila…
This paper studies high-order accurate entropy stable nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the ideal special relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). It is built on the modified RMHD equations with a particular source term, which is analogous to the Powell's eight-wave formulation and can be symmetrized so that an entropy pair is obtained. We design an affordable fully consistent two-point entropy conservative flux, which is not only consistent with the physical flux, but also maintains the zero parallel magnetic component, and then construct high-order accurate semi-discrete entropy…
In this article, we present entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin numerical schemes for equations of special relativistic hydrodynamics with the ideal equation of state. The numerical schemes use the summation by parts (SBP) property of Gauss-Lobatto quadrature rules. To achieve entropy stability for the scheme, we use two-point entropy conservative numerical flux inside the cells and a suitable entropy stable numerical flux at the cell interfaces. The resulting semi-discrete scheme is then shown to entropy stable. Time discretization is performed using SSP Runge-Kutta methods. Several numeric…
The paper presents high-order accurate, energy-, and entropy-stable discretizations constructed from summation-by-parts (SBP) operators. Notably, the discretizations assemble global SBP operators and use continuous solutions, unlike previous efforts that use discontinuous SBP discretizations. Derivative-based dissipation and local-projection stabilization (LPS) are investigated as options for stabilizing the baseline discretization. These stabilizations are equal up to a multiplicative constant in one dimension, but only LPS remains well conditioned for general, multidimensional SBP operators.…
We prove energy stability of a standard operator-splitting method for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We establish uniform bound of Sobolev norms of the numerical solution and convergence of the splitting approximation. This is the first unconditional energy stability result for the operator-splitting method for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Our analysis can be extended to many other models.
We develop an entropy stable two-phase incompressible Navier--Stokes/Cahn--Hilliard discontinuous Galerkin (DG) flow solver method. The model poses the Cahn-Hilliard equation as the phase field method, a skew-symmetric form of the momentum equation, and an artificial compressibility method to compute the pressure. We design the model so that it satisfies an entropy law, including free- and no-slip wall boundary conditions with non-zero wall contact angle. We then construct a high-order DG approximation of the model that satisfies the SBP-SAT property. With the help of a discrete stability anal…
We present a hybrid continuous and discontinuous Galerkin spectral element approximation that leverages the advantages of each approach. The continuous Galerkin approximation is used on interior element faces where the equation properties are continuous. A discontinuous Galerkin approximation is used at physical boundaries and if there is a jump in properties at a face. The approximation uses a split form of the equations and two-point fluxes to ensure stability for unstructured quadrilateral/hexahedral meshes with curved elements. The approximation is also conservative and constant state pres…
We present a provably stable discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with artificial compressibility and variable density. Stability proofs, which include boundary conditions, that follow a continuous entropy analysis are provided. We define a mathematical entropy function that combines the traditional kinetic energy and an additional energy term for the artificial compressiblity, and derive its associated entropy conservation law. The latter allows us to construct a provably stable split-form nodal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximation…
