Entropy-stable (ES) schemes have gained considerable attention over the last decade, especially in the context of turbulent flow simulations using high-order methods. While promising because of their nonlinear stability properties, ES schemes have to address a number of issues to become practical. One of them is how much entropy should be produced by the scheme at a certain level of under-resolution. This problem has been so far studied by considering different ES interfaces fluxes in the spatial discretization only because they can be tuned to generate a certain amount of entropy. In this note, we point out that, in the context of space-time discretizations, the same applies to ES interface fluxes in the temporal direction.
We propose two novel two-state approximate Riemann solvers for the compressible Euler equations which are provably entropy dissipative and suitable for the simulation of low Mach numbers. What is new, is that one of our two methods in addition is provably kinetic energy stable. Both methods are based on the entropy satisfying and kinetic energy consistent methods of Chandrashekar (2013). The low Mach number compliance is achieved by rescaling some speed of sound terms in the diffusion matrix in the spirit of Li & Gu (2008). In numerical tests we demonstrate the low Mach number compliance and t…
Entropy-conserving numerical fluxes are a cornerstone of modern high-order entropy-dissipative discretizations of conservation laws. In addition to entropy conservation, other structural properties mimicking the continuous level such as pressure equilibrium and kinetic energy preservation are important. This note proves that there are no numerical fluxes conserving (one of) Harten's entropies for the compressible Euler equations that also preserve pressure equilibria and have a density flux independent of the pressure. This is in contrast to fluxes based on the physical entropy, where even kin…
In this paper, we propose a novel development in the context of entropy stable finite-volume/finite-difference schemes. In the first part, we focus on the construction of high-order entropy conservative fluxes. Already in [LMR2002], the authors have generalized the second order accurate entropy conservative numerical fluxes proposed by Tadmor to high-order ($2p$) by a simple centered linear combination. We generalize this result additionally to non-centered flux combinations which is in particular favorable if non-periodic boundary conditions are needed. In the second part, a Lax-Wendroff theo…
The algebraic flux correction (AFC) schemes presented in this work constrain a standard continuous finite element discretization of a nonlinear hyperbolic problem to satisfy relevant maximum principles and entropy stability conditions. The desired properties are enforced by applying a limiter to antidiffusive fluxes that represent the difference between the high-order baseline scheme and a property-preserving approximation of Lax--Friedrichs type. In the first step of the limiting procedure, the given target fluxes are adjusted in a way that guarantees preservation of local and/or global bound…
The focus of the present research is on the analysis of local energy stability of high-order (including split-form) summation-by-parts methods, with e.g. two-point entropy-conserving fluxes, approximating non-linear conservation laws. Our main finding is that local energy stability, i.e., the numerical growth rate does not exceed the growth rate of the continuous problem, is not guaranteed even when the scheme is non-linearly stable and that this may have adverse implications for simulation results. We show that entropy-conserving two-point fluxes are inherently locally energy unstable, as the…
It is known that Flux Corrected Transport algorithms can produce entropy-violating solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws. Our purpose is to design flux correction with maximal antidiffusive fluxes to obtain entropy solutions of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws. To do this we consider a hybrid difference scheme that is a linear combination of a monotone scheme and a scheme of high-order accuracy. Flux limiters for the hybrid scheme are calculated from a corresponding optimization problem. Constraints for the optimization problem consist of inequalities that are valid for the monotone sch…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…
This work concerns the numerical approximation of a multicomponent compressible Euler system for a fluid mixture in multiple space dimensions on unstructured meshes with a high-order discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method (DGSEM). We first derive an entropy stable (ES) and robust (i.e., that preserves the positivity of the partial densities and internal energy) three-point finite volume scheme using relaxation-based approximate Riemann solvers from Bouchut [Nonlinear stability of finite volume methods for hyperbolic conservation laws and well-balanced schemes for sources, Birkhauser] a…
This paper studies high-order accurate entropy stable nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the ideal special relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). It is built on the modified RMHD equations with a particular source term, which is analogous to the Powell's eight-wave formulation and can be symmetrized so that an entropy pair is obtained. We design an affordable fully consistent two-point entropy conservative flux, which is not only consistent with the physical flux, but also maintains the zero parallel magnetic component, and then construct high-order accurate semi-discrete entropy…
We present a stable spectral vanishing viscosity for discontinuous Galerkin schemes, with applications to turbulent and supersonic flows. The idea behind the SVV is to spatially filter the dissipative fluxes, such that it concentrates in higher wavenumbers, where the flow is typically under-resolved, leaving low wavenumbers dissipation-free. Moreover, we derive a stable approximation of the Guermond-Popov fluxes with the Bassi-Rebay 1 scheme, used to introduce density regularization in shock capturing simulations. This filtering uses a Cholesky decomposition of the fluxes that ensures the entr…
A class of high-order discontinuous-Galerkin methods satisfying infinitely many entropy conditions with provable error estimates and strong convergence for general nonlinear conservation laws
Recently, it was discovered that the entropy-conserving/dissipative high-order split-form discontinuous Galerkin discretizations have robustness issues when trying to solve the simple density wave propagation example for the compressible Euler equations. The issue is related to missing local linear stability, i.e. the stability of the discretization towards perturbations added to a stable base flow. This is strongly related to an anti-diffusion mechanism, that is inherent in entropy-conserving two-point fluxes, which are a key ingredient for the high-order discontinuous Galerkin extension. In …
We study a time implicit Finite Volume scheme for degenerate Cahn-Hilliard model proposed in [W. E and P. Palffy-Muhoray. Phys. Rev. E, 55:R3844-R3846, 1997] and studied mathematically by the authors in [C. Cancès, D. Matthes, and F. Nabet. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 233(2):837-866, 2019]. The scheme is shown to preserve the key properties of the continuous model, namely mass conservation, positivity of the concentrations, the decay of the energy and the control of the entropy dissipation rate. This allows to establish the existence of a solution to the nonlinear algebraic system corresponding…
Positivity-Preserving and Entropy-Stable Oscillation-Eliminating DGSEM for the Compressible Euler Equations on Curvilinear Meshes with Adaptive Mesh Refinement
In this work a non-conservative balance law formulation is considered that encompasses the rotating, compressible Euler equations for dry atmospheric flows. We develop a semi-discretely entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin method on curvilinear meshes using a generalization of flux differencing for numerical fluxes in fluctuation form. The method uses the skew-hybridized formulation of the element operators to ensure that, even in the presence of under-integration on curvilinear meshes, the resulting discretization is entropy stable. Several atmospheric flow test cases in one, two, and three …

This paper presents entropy symmetrization and high-order accurate entropy stable schemes for the relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations. It is shown that the conservative RMHD equations are not symmetrizable and do not admit a thermodynamic entropy pair. To address this issue, a symmetrizable RMHD system, equipped with a convex thermodynamic entropy pair, is proposed by adding a source term into the equations, providing an analogue to the non-relativistic Godunov--Powell system. Arbitrarily high-order accurate entropy stable finite difference schemes are developed on Cartesian mesh…
