We study spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-parameter Einstein-Cartan-type class of theories, called "torsion bigravity". These theories offer a geometric framework (with a metric and an independent torsionfull connection) for a modification of Einstein's theory that has the same spectrum as bimetric gravity models. In addition to an Einsteinlike massless spin-2 excitation, there is a massive spin-2 one (of range $κ^{-1}$) coming from the torsion sector, rather than from a second metric. We prove the existence of three broad classes of spherically-symmetric black hole solutions in torsion bigravity. First, the Schwarzschild solution defines an asymptotically-flat torsionless black hole for all values of the parameters. [And we prove that one cannot deform a Schwarzschild solution, at the linearized level, by adding an infinitesimal torsion hair.] Second, when considering finite values of the range, we find that there exist non-asymptotically-flat torsion-hairy black holes in a large domain of parameter space. Third, we find that, in the limit of infinite range, there exists a two-parameter family of asymptotically flat torsion-hairy black holes. The latter black hole solutions give an interesting example of non-Einsteinian (but still purely geometric) black hole structures which might be astrophysically relevant when considering a range of cosmological size.
The goal of this short note is to provide a simpler derivation of the effective potential surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole for spherically symmetric perturbations in the framework of torsion bigravity than the one presented in [V. Nikiforova, Spherically symmetric perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole in torsion bigravity, Phys. Rev. D 104, 024032 (2021).]. We also discuss the unicity of the reduction process that leads to the potential.
In this paper we pursue the study of linear perturbations around a Schwarzschild black hole in a generalized Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity, called torsion bigravity. This theory contains both massless and massive spin-2 excitations. Here we consider non spherically-symmetric perturbations with generic multipolarity $L \geq 1$. We extend the conclusion of linear stability, previously obtained for $L=0$ [Phys. Rev. D 104, 024032], to the generic $L \geq 1$ case. We prove that the mass $κ$ of the massive spin-2 excitation must be large enough, namely $κr_h > \sqrt{1+η}$, to avoid the presence…
Time-dependent spherically-symmetric perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes are studied within torsion bigravity, i.e., within generalized Einstein-Cartan theories where the dynamical torsion carries massive spin-2 excitation. We reduce linearized perturbations to a Zerilli-like equation. The structure of the potential entering the latter Zerilli-like equation has two important consequences. First, in order to avoid the presence of singularities in generic perturbations, one must restrict the range (or inverse mass) of the spin-2 excitation to be (essentially) smaller than the radius of th…
We continue the study of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in torsion bigravity, a class of Einstein-Cartan-type gravity theories involving, besides a metric, a massive propagating torsion field. In the infinite-range limit, these theories admit asymptotically flat black hole solutions related to the presence of attractive fixed points in the asymptotic radial evolution of the metric and the torsion. We discuss these fixed points, and the way they are approached at large radii. Several phenomenological aspects of asymptotically flat torsion-hairy black holes are discussed: (i) locatio…
We study spherically symmetric solutions in a four-parameter Einstein-Cartan-type class of theories. These theories include torsion, as well as the metric, as dynamical fields, and contain only two physical excitations (around flat spacetime): a massless spin-2 excitation and a massive spin-2 one (of mass $ m_2 \equiv κ$). They offer a geometric framework (which we propose to call "torsion bigravity") for a modification of Einstein's theory that has the same spectrum as bimetric gravity models. We find that the spherically symmetric solutions of torsion bigravity theories exhibit several remar…
The non linear aspects of a recently proposed model of massive spin-2 particles with propagating torsion are studied. We obtain a nonlinear equation which reduces at linear order to a generalized Fierz-Pauli equation in any background space-time with or without a vanishing torsion. We contrast those results with properties of a class of bigravity theories in an arbitrary background Einstein manifold. It is known that the non perturbative spectrum of the bigravity model has 8 propagating physical degrees of freedom. This is identical to the physical propagating degrees of freedom of the massive…
We argue that the Isham-Storey exact solution to bigravity does not describe black holes because the horizon is a singular surface. However, this is not a generic property of bigravity, but a property of a particular potential. More general potentials do accept regular black holes. For regular black holes, we compute the total energy and thermodynamical parameters. Phase transitions occur for certain critical temperatures. We also find a novel region on phase space describing up to 4 allowed states for a given temperature.
It was pointed out long ago by Vainshtein [Phys. Lett. 39B, 393 (1972)] that the weak-field perturbation expansion of generic theories (of the nonlinear Fierz-Pauli type) involving massive spin-2 excitations breaks down below a certain distance around a material source ("Vainshtein radius"), scaling as some inverse power of the spin-2 mass $m_2$, i.e., some positive power of the range $m_2^{-1}$. Here we prove that this conclusion does not apply in a generalized Einstein-Cartan theory (called "torsion bigravity") whose spectrum is made (like that of bimetric gravity) of a massless spin-2 excit…
We report full agreement between the Bekenstein-Hawking semiclassical entropy and Cardy's formula for black holes in 3d (massive) bigravity. Since this theory does have local bulk local excitations (a massive graviton) and black holes are not locally AdS this example provides a non-trivial test of the robustness of the Cardy formula.
We study the stability under the perturbation and the related anti-evaporation of the Nariai space-time in bigravity. If we impose specific condition for the solutions and parameters, we obtain asymptotically de Sitter space-time, and show the existence of the Nariai space-time as a background solution. Considering the perturbation around the Nariai space-time up to first order, we investigate the behavior of black hole horizon. We show that the anti-evaporation does not occur on the classical level in the bigravity.
We consider the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in bigravity theory for minimal model with a condition $f_{μν} = C^{2} g_{μν}$ and evaluate the entropy for black holes. In this condition, we show that there exists the Schwarzschild solution for $C^{2} = 1$, which is unique consistent solution. We examine how the massive spin-2 field contributes and affects to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy corresponding to Einstein gravity. In order to obtain the black hole entropy, we use a recently proposed approach which use Virasoro algebra and central charge corresponding to surface ter…
In this paper we explore the advantage of using the Kerr-Schild Ansatz in the search of analytic configurations to bigravity. It turns out that it plays a crucial role by providing means to straightforwardly calculate the square root matrix encoding the interaction terms between both gravities. We rederive in this spirit the Babichev-Fabbri family of asymptotically flat rotating black holes with the aid of an emerging circularity theorem. Taking into account that the interaction terms contain by default two cosmological constants, we repeat our approach starting from the more natural seeds for…
We study asymptotically flat black holes with massive graviton hair within the ghost-free bigravity theory. There have been contradictory statements in the literature about their existence -- such solutions were reported some time ago, but later a different group claimed the Schwarzschild solution to be the only asymptotically flat black hole in the theory. As a result, the controversy emerged. We have analyzed the issue ourselves and have been able to construct such solutions within a carefully designed numerical scheme. We find that for given parameter values there can be one or two asymptot…
In this paper we study the phenomenology of stars and galaxies in massive bigravity. We give parameter conditions for the existence of viable star solutions when the radius of the star is much smaller than the Compton wavelength of the graviton. If these parameter conditions are not met, we constrain the ratio between the coupling constants of the two metrics, in order to give viable conditions for e.g. neutron stars. For galaxies, we put constraints on both the Compton wavelength of the graviton and the conformal factor and coupling constants of the two metrics. The relationship between black…
We consider the properties of solutions in the bigravity theory for general models, which are parametrized by two parameters $α_{3}$ and $α_{4}$. Assuming that two metric tensors $g_{μν}$ and $f_{μν}$ satisfy the condition $f_{μν}=C^{2}g_{μν}$ where $C$ is a constant, we investigate the conditions for the parameters so that the solutions with $C\neq1$ could exist. We also discuss the magnitude and the sign of corresponding cosmological constants. For the black hole solution, we consider the black hole entropy to which the massive spin-$2$ field contributes. In order to obtain the black hole en…
We present a survey of the known cosmological and black hole solutions in ghost-free bigravity and massive gravity theories. These can be divided into three classes. First, there are solutions with proportional metrics, which are the same as in General Relativity with a cosmological term, which can be positive, negative or zero. Secondly, for spherically symmetric systems, there are solutions with non-bidiagonal metrics. The g-metric fulfills Einstein equations with a positive cosmological term and a matter source, while the f-metric is anti-de Sitter. The third class contains solutions with b…
We report that a class of three-dimensional bimetric theories contain asymptotically flat solutions. These spacetimes can be cast in a set of asymptotic conditions at null infinity which are preserved under the infinite dimensional BMS group. Moreover, the algebra of the canonical generators exhibits a central extension. The possibility that these solutions describe regular black holes is also discussed.
We study black holes in the recently proposed ghost-free theory with two gravitons, one of which is massive and another is massless. These black holes possess a regular event horizon which is common for both metrics and has the same values of the surface gravity and Hawking temperature with respect to each metric. The ratio of the event horizon radii measured by the two metrics is a free parameter that labels the solutions. We present a numerical evidence for their existence and find that they comprise several classes. Black holes within each class approach the same AdS-type asymptotic at infi…
In Phys.\ Rev.\ D 90 043006 (2014), we proposed a new ghost-free massive spin-two model in flat spacetime. Furthermore, as some extension, we couple the new model with a non-dynamical curved background in Phys.\ Rev.\ D 90 123013 (2014) and constructed new interaction terms without appearance of an extra mode. The characteristic property of the new model is the existence of nonlinear potential terms which give the nontrivial vacua. The presence of the nontrivial vacua, however, does not mean that the particle can be defined around all vacua. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss the condition f…
Cosmic strings inside Schwarzschild black holes in teleparallel gravity are considered.Torsion flux inside the black hole is compute like a torsion vortex on a superfluid.Since some components of torsion are singular on Schwarzschild horizon and others remain finite we compute a torsion invariant to decide whether the torsion is singular and where torsion singularities located. It is found out that as in the curvature case of Einstein's black hole the event horizon is not a mere coordinate singularity for torsion although a true torsion singularity is found at the center of the teleparallel bla…
In the former part, we study the gravitational collapse of pressureless dust and find special solutions, where, in both the physical and fiducial sectors, the exterior and interior spacetime geometries are given by the Schwarzschild spacetimes and the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes dominated by pressureless dust, respectively, with specific time slicings. In the case where the Lagrange multipliers are trivial and have no jump across the matter interfaces in both the physical and fiducial sectors, the junction conditions across them remain the same as those in general relativity …
We derive the static spherically symmetric vacuum solution for a spacetime with non-vanishing torsion by solving the field equations analytically. The effects of torsion appear as a single parameter in the line element. For the positive values of this parameter, the resulting line element is found to be of the Reissner-Nordstrom type. This parameter is related to the spin of matter and acts as a torsion 'charge' much like the electric charge in conventional Reissner-Nordstrom geometry. We also analyze the existence and stability of the orbits for both massless and massive particles in this set…
Using $N=1+1$ supersymmetric extension of the three-dimensional gravity with torsion, we show that a generic black hole has no exact supersymmetries, the extremal black hole has only one, while the zero-energy black hole has two. Combining these results with the asymptotic supersymmetry algebra, we are naturally led to interpret the zero-energy black hole as the ground state of the Ramond sector, and analogously, the anti-de Sitter solution as the ground state of the Neveau-Schwartz sector.
We study Chern-Simons black holes in d-dimensions and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations. Also, we consider as background the five-dimensional Chern-Simons black hole with torsion and the BTZ black hole with torsion. We have found that the quasinormal modes depend on the highest power of curvature present in the Chern-Simons theory, such as occurs for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. We also show that the effect of the torsion is to modify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies, which modify the oscillation frequency of the field for …
We study the phase transition and the critical behavior of the BTZ black hole with torsion obtained in $(1+2)$-dimensional Poincaré gauge theory. According to Ehrenfest's classification, when the parameters in the theory are arranged properly the BTZ black hole with torsion may posses the second order phase transition which is also a smaller mass/larger mass black hole phase transition. Nevertheless, the critical behavior is different from the one in the van der Waals liquid/gas system. We also calculated the critical exponents of the relevant thermodynamic quantities, which are the same as th…
In this work we have studied the singular behaviour of gravitational theories with non symmetric connections. For this purpose we introduce a new criteria for the appearance of singularities based on the existence of black/white hole regions of arbitrary codimension defined inside a spacetime of arbitrary dimension. We discuss this prescription by increasing the complexity of the particular torsion theory under study. In this sense, we start with Teleparallel Gravity, then we analyse Einstein-Cartan theory, and finally dynamical torsion models.
In this paper, we study the phase transition and the entropy spectrum of BTZ black hole obtained in a model of three-dimensional gravity with torsion. By calculating the heat capacity we find that the BTZ black hole we considered will experience phase transition at some critical point. This indicates that the critical behaviors of black holes do not only depend on the spacetime metric, but have to do with the theory of gravity under consideration. In addition we derived the entropy spectrum of the BTZ black hole according to the quasinormal modes(QNMs) and the adiabatic invariance. It shows th…
We derive a new exact static and spherically symmetric vacuum solution in the framework of the Poincaré gauge field theory with dynamical massless torsion. This theory is built in such a form that allows to recover General Relativity when the first Bianchi identity of the model is fulfilled by the total curvature. The solution shows a Reissner-Nordström type geometry with a Coulomb-like curvature provided by the torsion field. It is also shown the existence of a generalized Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution when additional electromagnetic fields and/or a cosmological constant are coupled t…
Starting from the work of the author in 1990 with different collaborators, essential progress in 2d gravity theories has been made. Now all such theories (and not only certain special models) can be treated at the classical as well as at the quantum level. New physical insights have been obtained, as e.g. the ``virtual black hole''. The formalism developed in this context recently also finds increasing interest in mathematical physics.

This is a brief survey of the known black hole solutions in the theories of ghost-free bigravity and massive gravity. Various black holes exist in these theories, in particular those supporting a massive graviton hair. However, it seems that solutions which could be astrophysically relevant are the same as in General Relativity, or very close to them. Therefore, the no-hair conjecture essentially applies, and so it would be hard to detect the graviton mass by observing black holes.
Poincaré Gauge's theory of gravity is the most noteworthy alternative extension of general relativity that has a correspondence between spin and spacetime geometry. In this paper, we use Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter and anti-de Sitter solutions, where torsion $τ$ is added as an independent field, to analyze the weak deflection angles $\hatα$ of massive and null particles in finite distance regime. We then apply $\hatα$ to determine the Einstein ring formation in M87* and Sgr. A* and determine that relative to Earth's location from these black holes, massive torsion effects can provide consider…
In this paper we have investigated the gravitational lensing in a spherically symmetric spacetime with torsion in the generalized Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama (ECKS) theory of gravity by considering higher order terms. The torsion parameters change the spacetime structure which affects the photon sphere, the deflection angle and the strong gravitational lensing. The condition of existence of horizons is not inconsistent with that of the photon sphere. Especially, there exists a novel case in which there is horizon but no photon sphere for the considered spacetime. In this special case, the de…
Using a recently found black hole solution in the framework of the Poincar{é} gauge theory of gravity, we study gravitational lensing for a system where the lens is a static spherically symmetric black hole. By analyzing the equations of motion for light rays in a space-time with torsion, we derive the deflection angle as the light emitted from a source pass through near the black hole and numerically solve the resulting integral. We also study the effects of torsion on the position of images. The results show that the presence of torsion slightly alters both the deflection angle and position …
In the context of three-dimensional gravity with torsion, the concepts of standard and "exotic" Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes are generalized by going over to black holes with torsion. This approach provides a unified insight into thermodynamics of black holes, with or without torsion.
Analogue black holes in non-Riemannian effective spacetime of moving vortical plasmas described by moving magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. This example is an extension of acoustic torsion recently introduced in the literature (Garcia de Andrade,PRD(2004),7,64004), where now the presence of artificial black holes in moving plasmas is obtained by the presence of an horizon in the non-Riemannian spacetime. Hawking radiation is computed in terms of the background magnetic field and the magnetic permeability. The metric is singular although Cartan analogue torsion is not necessarily singular. The e…
The role of torsion in quantum three-dimensional gravity is investigated by studying the partition function of the Euclidean theory in Riemann-Cartan spacetime. The entropy of the black hole with torsion is found to differ from the standard Bekenstein-Hawking result, but its form is in complete agreement with the first law of black hole thermodynamics.
The canonical approach to black hole entropy in Poincaré gauge theory without matter is extended to include Maxwell field as a matter source. The new formalism is used to calculate asymptotic charges and entropy of Kerr--Newmann--AdS black holes with torsion. The result implies that the first law, with a nontrivial contribution of the Maxwell field, takes the same form as in general relativity.
We analyzed static spherically symmetric solutions of the five dimensional (5D) Lovelock gravity in the first order formulation. In the Riemannian sector, when torsion vanishes, Boulware-Deser black hole represents a unique static spherically symmetric black hole solution for the generic choice of the Lagrangian parameters. We showed that the special choice of the Lagrangian parameters, different from the Lovelock Chern-Simons gravity, leads to the existence of the static black hole solution with torsion, which metric is asymptotically AdS. We calculate conserved charges and thermodynamical qu…
Asymptotic symmetry of the Euclidean 3D gravity with torsion is described by two independent Virasoro algebras with different central charges. Elements of this boundary conformal structure are combined with Cardy's formula to calculate the black hole entropy.
We show that the presence of spacetime torsion, unlike any other non-trivial modifications of the Einstein gravity, does \emph{not} affect black hole entropy. The theory being diffeomorphism invariant leads to a Noether current and hence to a Noether charge, which can be associated to the heat content of the spacetime. Furthermore, the evolution of the spacetime inheriting torsion can be encoded in the difference between suitably defined surface and bulk degrees of freedom. For static spacetimes the surface and bulk degrees of freedom coincides, leading to holographic equipartition. In doing s…
We consider three-dimensional gravity based on torsion. Specifically, we consider an extension of the so-called Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity in the presence of a scalar field with a self-interacting potential, where the scalar field is non-minimally coupled with the torsion scalar. Then, we find asymptotically AdS hairy black hole solutions, which are characterized by a scalar field with a power-law behavior, being regular outside the event horizon and null at spatial infinity and by a self-interacting potential, which tends to an effective cosmological constant at spatial inf…
In the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity, the intrinsic spin of fermionic matter generates spacetime torsion and induces gravitational repulsion at extremely high densities. This repulsion prevents the collapsing spin-fluid matter in a black hole from forming a singularity. Instead, the interior of a black hole with a stiff equation of state becomes a new universe, which contracts until a (big) bounce and then expands. We derive the equations describing the dynamics of our Universe, formed in such a scenario, in terms of the conformal time which is a convenient variable for testi…
We extract exact charged black-hole solutions with flat transverse sections in the framework of D-dimensional Maxwell-f(T) gravity, and we analyze the singularities and horizons based on both torsion and curvature invariants. Interestingly enough, we find that in some particular solution subclasses there appear more singularities in the curvature scalars than in the torsion ones. This difference disappears in the uncharged case, or in the case where f(T) gravity becomes the usual linear-in-T teleparallel gravity, that is General Relativity. Curvature and torsion invariants behave very differen…
We consider possible perturbations of the black hole event horizon induced by matter with spin, extending the derivation of the Hawking-Hartle formula (tidal heating) in the presence of torsion. When specialised to theories with a non-vanishing (pseudo-)traceless component of the (con)torsion tensor, we remarkably find that the tidal heating phenomenon gets modified by additional torsion-dependent terms, in agreement with previous investigations based on Jacobson's spacetime thermodynamics approach. These results lead to relevant phenomenological and theoretical consequences: modifications in …
A non-Riemannian geometrical approach to the investigation of an acoustic black hole in irrotational mean flows, based on the Lighthill vortex sound theory is given. This additional example of analog gravity based on classical fluids is used to investigate the acoustic Lorentz violation. An example is given where the contortion vector is distributed along a ring inside the fluid which can be gravitational analog of the torsion thick string spacetime defect. It is found that the linear background flow velocity approximation, acoustic Lorentz symmetry is breaking by the acoustic Cartan contortio…
