We compute various nucleon polarizabilities in chiral perturbation theory implementing the $Δ$-full ($Δ$-less) approach up to order $ε^3 + q^4$ ($q^4$) in the small-scale (chiral) expansion. The calculation is carried out using the covariant formulation of $χ$PT by utilizing the extended on-mass shell renormalization scheme. Except for the spin-independent dipole polarizabilities used to fix the values of certain low-energy constants, our results for the nucleon polarizabilities are pure predictions. We compare our calculations with available experimental data and other theoretical results. The importance of the explicit treatment of the $Δ$ degree of freedom in the effective field theory description of the nucleon polarizabilities is analyzed. We also study the convergence of the $1/m$ expansion and analyze the efficiency of the heavy-baryon approach for the nucleon polarizabilities.
Differential cross section of deuteron Compton scattering has been calculated using the Bonn NN-potential, a consistent set of meson-exchange currents and seagulls, and lowest- and higher-order electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon. Estimates of the polarizabilities of the neutron are obtained from recent experimental data.
Spin polarizabilities of the nucleon are discussed in the framework of fixed-t and backward-angle dispersion relations, chiral perturbation theory, and the non-relativistic quark model. Calculations with the dispersion relations generally confirm findings from HBChPT and disagree with a recent experimental result from LEGS for the backward spin polarizability.
Model-independent effects of $Δ$(1232) excitation on nucleon polarizabilities are computed in a Lorentz-invariant fashion. We find a large effect of relative order $(M_Δ- M)/M$ in some of the spin polarizabilities, with the backward spin polarizability receiving the largest contribution. Similar subleading effects are found to be important in the fourth-order spin-independent polarizabilities $α_{Eν}$, $\al_{E2}$, $\be_{Mν}$, and $\be_{M 2}$. Combining our results with those for the model-independent effects of pion loops we obtain predictions for spin and fourth-order polarizabilities which c…
A forward dispersion calculation is implemented for the spin polarizabilities $γ_1, ... ,γ_4$ of the proton and the neutron. These polarizabilities are related to the spin structure of the nucleon at low energies and are structure-constants of the Compton scattering amplitude at ${\cal O}(ω^3)$. In the absence of a direct experimental measurement of these quantities, a dispersion calculation serves the purpose of constraining the model building, and of comparing with recent calculations in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
A microscopic calculation of Compton scattering on the nucleon is presented which encompasses the lowest energies -- yielding nucleon polarizabilities -- and extends to energies of the order of 600 MeV. We have used the covariant "Dressed K-Matrix Model" obeying the symmetry properties which are appropriate in the different energy regimes. In particular, crossing symmetry, gauge invariance and unitarity are satisfied. The extent of violation of analyticity (causality) is used as an expansion parameter.
Generalized nucleon polarizabilities for virtual photons can be defined in terms of electroproduction cross sections as function of the 4-momentum transfer $Q^2$. In particular, the sum of the generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities $Σ=α+β$ and the spin polarizability $γ$ can be expressed by virtual photon absorption cross sections integrated over the excitation energy. These quantities have been calculated within the framework of the recently developed unitary isobar model for pion photo- and electroproduction on the proton, which describes the available experimental data up to an …
Goal of this work is the consistent description of elastic Compton scattering from the single nucleon and the deuteron. The theoretical framework chosen is Chiral Perturbation Theory, which is the low-energy formulation of Quantum Chromodynamics, where we extend the spectrum of active degrees of freedom from only pions and nucleons to also the Delta(1232) resonance. In the deuteron sector, we treat the nucleon-nucleon interaction non-perturbatively. Besides the Compton cross sections, our main concern is with the nucleon polarizabilities, which are a useful tool to describe the reaction of the…
I discuss recent results regarding the influence of pion-nucleon and and nucleon-resonance physics on the (spin-) polarizabilities of the nucleon as measured in (polarized) Compton scattering.
Modifications to the nucleon electric polarizability induced by pion and sigma exchange in the q-q potentials are studied by means of sum rule techniques within a non-relativistic quark model. Contributions from meson exchange interactions are found to be small and in general reduce the quark core polarizability for a number of hybrid and one-boson-exchange q-q models. These results can be explained by the constraints that the baryonic spectrum impose on the short range behavior of the mesonic interactions.
The total photodisintegration cross sections of three-body nuclei are calculated with semirealistic NN potentials below pion threshold. Full final state interaction with Coulomb force is taken into account via the Lorentz integral transform method. The experimental total cross sections are well described and the sum rule $σ_{-1}(^3$H) agrees with elastic electron scattering data. The calculated ^3He polarizability is 0.15 fm^3.
The subject of nucleon polarizabilities in real, virtual, and doubly virtual Compton scattering is discussed with respect to what is known and how such quantities can be extracted from data.
Deuteron Compton scattering is calculated to $\mathcal{O}(Q^2)$ in pionless effective field theory using a dibaryon approach. The vector amplitude, which was not included in the previous pionless calculations, contributes to the cross section at $\mathcal{O}(Q^2)$ and influences significantly the extracted values of nucleon electric polarizability at incident photon energy 49 MeV. We recommend future high precision deuteron compton scattering experiments being performed at 25-35 MeV photon energy where the nucleon polarizability effects are appreciable and the pionless effective field theory i…
Following up on the plenary talk given by Ulf Meißner, I discuss a generalization of the concept of nucleon spin-polarizabilities in terms of multipole excitation/de-excitation and present an overview of the available theoretical predictions for these elusive but interesting structure parameters of the nucleon.
We outline a microscopic framework to calculate nucleon Compton scattering from the level of quarks and gluons within the covariant Faddeev approach. We explain the connection with hadronic expansions of the Compton scattering amplitude and discuss the obstacles in maintaining electromagnetic gauge invariance. Finally we give preliminary results for the nucleon polarizabilities.
In recent years, real and virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon have attracted considerable interest from both the experimental and theoretical sides. Real Compton scattering gives access to the so-called electromagnetic polarizabilities containing the structure information beyond the global properties of the nucleon such as its charge, mass, and magnetic moment. These polarizabilities have an intuitive interpretation in terms of induced dipole moments and thus characterize the response of the constituents of the nucleon to a soft external stimulus. The virtual Compton scattering reaction…
Compton scattering offers in principle an intriguing new window on nucleon structure. Existing experiments and future programs are discussed and the state of theoretical understanding of such measurements is explored.
Recent chiral EFT calculations of nucleon polarizabilities reveal a problem in the current empirical determination of proton's electromagnetic polarizabilities. We also report on the progress in the empirical determination of the $Δ$(1232)-resonance magnetic moment in the process of $γp \to p π^0 γ'$ measured at MAMI.
We calculate the nucleons' electromagnetic polarizabilities in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including all terms to order ${\cal O} (q^4)$. The chiral prediction of the electric polarizabilities for the neutron and the proton are in good agreement with the data. In the case of the magnetic polarizabilities the big positive contribution from the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is largely cancelled by a non--analytic loop contribution of the $\ln M_π$ type. This novel effect helps to understand the rather small empirical value of the nucleons' magnetic polarizability.
We present a complete one-loop analysis of the four nucleon spin polarizabilities in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The first non-vanishing contributions to the isovector and first corrections to the isoscalar spin polarizabilities are calculated. No unknown parameters enter these predictions. We compare our results to various dispersive analyses. We also discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion and the role of the delta isobar.
Virtual Compton scattering off nucleons and pions at low energies is discussed. Predictions for the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon are presented within the framework of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory and the linear sigma model. First results for the generalized polarizabilities of the charged pion in chiral perturbation theory at ${\cal O}(p^4)$ are shown.
We discuss the low-energy behavior of the spin-averaged amplitude of virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off a nucleon. Based on gauge invariance, Lorentz invariance and the discrete symmetries, it is shown that to first order in the frequency of the final real photon only two generalized polarizabilities appear. Different low-energy expansion schemes are discussed and put into perspective.
We discuss the virtual Compton scattering reaction $e^-p\to e^-pγ$ at low energies. We present results for the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon obtained in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory at $O(p^3)$.
In a previous paper virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon has been investigated in the one-loop approximation of the linear sigma model in order to determine the 3 scalar generalized polarizabilities. We have now extended this work and calculated the 7 vector polarizabilities showing up in the spin-dependent amplitude of virtual Compton scattering. The results fulfill 3 model-independent constraints recently derived. Compared to the constituent quark model there exist enormous differences for some of the vector polarizabilities. At vanishing three-momentum of the virtual photon, the analy…
Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon has been studied in the one-loop approximation of the linear sigma model. The three generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon have been calculated and compared with the existing theoretical predictions. In particular, we find that only two of the three scalar polarizabilities are independent observables.
As guideline for forthcoming experiments, we present predictions from Chiral Effective Field Theory for polarized cross sections in low energy Compton scattering for photon energies below 170 MeV, both on the proton and on the neutron. Special interest is put on the role of the nucleon spin polarizabilities which can be examined especially well in polarized Compton scattering. We present a model-independent way to extract their energy dependence and static values from experiment, interpreting our findings also in terms of the low energy effective degrees of freedom inside the nucleon: The pola…
I give a summary of recent results on nucleon polarizabilities, with emphasis on chiral perturbation theory. The predictive calculations of Compton scattering off the nucleon are compared to recent empirical determinations and lattice QCD calculations of the polarizabilities, thereby testing chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector.
We calculate the spin-polarizabilities of the nucleon by means of dispersion relation, where the pion photoproduction amplitude predicted by chiral soliton model is utilized. We consider the $Nπ$ and $Δπ$ channels in the pion-photoproduction amplitude, and also evaluate the contribution of the anomalous term of the $π^0γγ$ process. In a narrow decay-width limit of the $Δ$ particle the result coincides with that in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) except for the interference part of the electric and magnetic amplitudes. A comparison with the multipole analysis is given.
Nucleon generalized polarizabilities are investigated within a relativistic framework, defining such quantities through a Lorentz covariant multipole expansion of the amplitude for virtual Compton scattering. The key physical ingredients in the calculation of the nucleon polarizabilities are the Lorentz invariant reduced matrix elements of the electromagnetic transition current, which can be evaluated from off-energy-shell helicity amplitudes. The evolution of the proton paramagnetic polarizability, $β_{para}(q)$, as a function of the virtual-photon three-momentum transfer $ q,$ is explicitly …
We review recent developments in the theoretical investigation of the nucleon polarizabilities. We first report on the static polarizabilities as measured in real Compton scattering, comparing and interpreting the results from various theoretical approaches. In a second step, we extend the discussion to the generalized polarizabilities which can be accessed in virtual Compton scattering, showing how the information encoded in these quantities can provide a spatial interpretation of the induced polarization densities in the nucleon.
Using the techniques of chiral effective field theories we evaluate the so called generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon, which characterize the structure dependent components in virtual Compton scattering (VCS) as probed in the electron scattering reaction e N \to e' N gamma. Results are given for both spin-dependent and spin-independent structure effects to O(p^3) in SU(2) Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and to O(epsilon^3) in the SU(2) Small Scale Expansion. Finally we compare our calculations with results from the pioneering VCS experiment on the proton from Mainz.
Spin-polarizabilities are predicted by calculating the cross-section difference $σ_{3/2}-σ_{1/2}$ from available data for the resonance couplings $A_{3/2}$ and $A_{1/2}$ and CGLN amplitudes. The forward spin-polarizabilities are predicted to be $γ^{(p)}_0=-0.58\pm 0.20$ and $γ^{(n)}_0=+0.38\pm 0.22$ in units of $10^{-4}$fm$^4$ where the different signs are found to be due to the isospin dependencies of the $E_{0+}$ and the $(M,E)^{(1/2)}_{1+}$ amplitudes. The backward spin-polarizabilities are predicted to be $γ^{(p)}_π=-36.6$ and $γ^{(n)}_π=+58.3$, to be compared with the experimental values …
We calculate the $N^*$ contributions to the generalized polarizabilities of the proton in virtual Compton scattering. The following nucleon excitations are included: $N^*(1535)$, $N^*(1650)$, $N^*(1520)$, $N^*(1700)$, $Δ(1232)$, $Δ^*(1620)$ and $Δ^*(1700)$. The relationship between nucleon structure parameters, $N^*$ properties and the generalized polarizabilities of the proton is illustrated.
Deuteron Compton scattering below pion photoproduction threshold is considered in the framework of the nonrelativistic diagrammatic approach with the Bonn OBE potential. A complete gauge-invariant set of diagrams is taken into account which includes resonance diagrams without and with NN-rescattering and diagrams with one- and two-body seagulls. The seagull operators are analyzed in detail, and their relations with free- and bound-nucleon polarizabilities is discussed. It is found that both dipole and higher-order polarizabilities of the nucleon are needed for a quantitative description of rec…
We are studying the electron scattering process e p to e' p' gamma in order to obtain information on the genuine virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process gamma^* N to gamma N. In addition to the two kinematical variables of real Compton scattering, e.g. the scattering angle theta and the energy omega' of the outgoing photon, the invariant amplitude for VCS depends on a third kinematical variable, which we choose as the absolute value of the three-momentum transfer to the nucleon. The structure-dependent coefficients in the VCS amplitude therefore acquire a momentum dependence and are termed ``…
Electromagnetic properties of the nucleon are explored with lattice QCD using a novel technique. Focusing on background electric fields, we show how the electric polarizability can be extracted from nucleon correlation functions. A crucial step concerns addressing contributions from the magnetic moment, which affects the relativistic propagation of nucleons in electric fields. By properly handing these contributions, we can determine both magnetic moments and electric polarizabilities. Lattice results from anisotropic clover lattices are presented. Our method is not limited to the neutron; we …
Nucleon properties are investigated in background electric fields. As the magnetic moments of baryons affect their relativistic propagation in constant electric fields, electric polarizabilities cannot be determined without knowledge of magnetic moments. This is analogous to the experimental situation, for which determination of polarizabilities from the Compton amplitude requires subtraction of Born terms. With the background field method, we devise combinations of nucleon correlation functions in constant electric fields that isolate magnetic moments and electric polarizabilities. Using an e…
This review gives an update on virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the nucleon, $γ^* N \to N γ$, in the low-energy regime. We recall the theoretical formalism related to the generalized polarizabilities (GPs) and model predictions for these observables. We present the GP extraction methods that are used in the experiments: the approach based on the low-energy theorem for VCS and the formalism of Dispersion Relations. We then review the experimental results, with a focus on the progress brought by recent experimental data on proton generalized polarizabilities, and we conclude by some perspect…
The spin-independent part of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) amplitude from the nucleon is calculated within the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). The calculation is performed to third order in external momenta according to chiral power counting. The relation of the tree-level amplitudes to what is expected from the low-energy theorem is discussed. We relate the one-loop results to the structure coefficients of a low-energy expansion for the model-dependent part of the VCS amplitude recently defined by Fearing and Scherer. Finally we discuss the connection of …
The difference between the electromagnetic self-energies of proton and neutron can be calculated with the Cottingham formula, which expresses the self-energies as an integral over the electroproduction cross sections---provided the nucleon matrix elements of the current commutator do not contain a fixed pole. We show that, under the same proviso, the subtraction function occurring in the dispersive representation of the virtual Compton forward scattering amplitude is determined by the cross sections. The representation in particular leads to a parameter-free sum rule for the nucleon polarizabi…
Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon (VCS) is studied in the regime of low energy of the outgoing real photon. This regime allows one to directly access the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon in a VCS experiment. In the derivation of the low energy theorem for VCS that exists in the literature, the low energy limit taken for virtual initial photons does not match on that for real photons, when one approaches the initial photon's mass shell. While this problem has for a long time been attributed to the non-analyticity of the Compton amplitude with respect to the photon virtuality…
We review the current state of knowledge of the nucleon polarizabilities and of their role in nucleon Compton scattering and in hydrogen spectrum. We discuss the basic concepts, the recent lattice QCD calculations and advances in chiral effective-field theory. On the experimental side, we review the ongoing programs aimed to measure the nucleon (scalar and spin) polarizabilities via the Compton scattering processes, with real and virtual photons. A great part of the review is devoted to the general constraints based on unitarity, causality, discrete and continuous symmetries, which result in m…
The polarizabilities $α$ (electric), $β$ (magnetic) and $γ_π$ (backward spin) of the nucleon are investigated in terms of degrees of freedom of the nucleon using recent results for the CGLN amplitudes and resonance couplings $A_{1/2}$ and $A_{3/2}$. The photon excitation strengths of the excited states are given in terms of partial integrated photoabsorption cross sections and resonant contributions of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. As a test of the present predictions, cross section differences $(σ_{3/2}-σ_{1/2})$ of the excited states are compared with data recently measured at MA…
Previous calculations of the polarizabilities of the nucleon within the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory have included the contribution of the $Δ$(1232) only its effect on various contact terms or have been performed in chiral SU(3) where systematic errors are difficult to control. Herein we perfrom a corresponding calculation in chiral SU(2) wherein $Δ$(1232) is treated as an explicit degree of freedom and the expansion is taken to third order in soft momenta, the pion mass and the quantity $M_Δ-M_N$, collectively denoted by $ε$. We present the results of a systematic $O(ε…
We present a projector formalism which allows to define dynamical polarizabilities of the nucleon from a multipole expansion of the nucleon Compton amplitudes. We give predictions for the energy dependence of these dynamical polarizabilities both from dispersion theory and from leading-one-loop chiral effective field theory. Based on the good agreement between the two theoretical frameworks, we conclude that the energy dependence of the dynamical polarizabilities is dominated by chiral dynamics, except in those multipole channels where the first nucleon resonance Delta(1232) can be excited. Bo…
We present calculations and an analysis of the spin-independent dipole electric and magnetic dynamical polarizabilities for the lowest in mass SU(3) octet of baryons. These extensive calculations are made possible by the recent implementation of semi-automatized calculations in Chiral Perturbation Theory which allows evaluating dynamical spin-independent electromagnetic polarizabilities from Compton scattering up to next-to-the-leading order. Our results are in good agreement with calculations performed for nucleons found in the literature. The dependencies for the range of photon energies up …
We examine elastic Compton scattering from the deuteron for photon energies ranging from zero to 100 MeV, using state-of-the-art deuteron wave functions and NN-potentials. Nucleon-nucleon rescattering between emission and absorption of the two photons is treated by Green's functions in order to ensure gauge invariance and the correct Thomson limit. With this Green's-function hybrid approach, we fulfill the low-energy theorem of deuteron Compton scattering and there is no significant dependence on the deuteron wave function used. Concerning the nucleon structure, we use Chiral Effective Field T…
An effective field theory is used to give a model-independent description of Compton scattering at energies comparable to the pion mass. The amplitudes for scattering on the proton and the deuteron, calculated to fourth order in small momenta in chiral perturbation theory, contain four undetermined parameters that are in one-to-one correspondence with the nucleon polarizabilities. These polarizabilities are extracted from fits to data on elastic photon scattering on hydrogen and deuterium. For the proton we find: alpha_p = 12.1 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.5, beta_p = 3.4 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.1, both in units of 10…
Based on Compton scattering and meson photoproduction data the polarizabilities of the nucleon are precisely studied and well understood due to recent experimental and theoretical work based on nonsubtracted dispersion relations. The {\it recommended} experimental values are $α_p=12.0\pm 0.6$, $(12.0)$, $β_p=1.9\mp 0.6$, $(1.9)$, $α_n=12.5\pm 1.7$, $(12.7\pm 0.9)$, $β_n=2.7\mp 1.8$, $(2.5\mp 0.9)$ in units of $10^{-4}$fm$^3$ and $γ^{(p)}_π=-36.4\pm 1.5$, $(-36.6)$, $γ^{(n)}_π=+58.6\pm 4.0$, $(58.3)$, $(γ^{(p)}_0=-0.58\pm 0.20)$, $γ^{(n)}_0=0.38\pm 0.22)$ in units of $10^{-4}$fm$^4$ [1]. The nu…
The nucleon generalized polarizabilities (GPs), probed in virtual Compton scattering (VCS), describe the spatial distribution of the polarization density in a nucleon. They are accessed experimentally via the process of electron-proton bremsstrahlung ($ep\to epγ$) at electron-beam facilities, such as MIT-Bates, CEBAF (Jefferson Lab), and MAMI (Mainz). We present the calculation of the nucleon GPs and VCS observables at next-to-leading order in baryon chiral perturbation theory (B$χ$PT), and confront the results with the empirical information. At this order our results are predictions, in the s…
We derive two new sum rules for the unpolarized doubly virtual Compton scattering process on a nucleon, which establish novel low-$Q^2$ relations involving the nucleon's generalized polarizabilities and moments of the nucleon's unpolarized structure functions $F_1(x,Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. These relations facilitate the determination of some structure constants which can only be accessed in off-forward doubly virtual Compton scattering, not experimentally accessible at present. We perform an empirical determination for the proton and compare our results with a next-to-leading-order chiral pert…
Recent experimental results on the proton and neutron polarizabilities are examined from the point of view of backward dispersion relations. Results are found to be in reasonable agreement with the measured values. A rigorous relationship between the nucleon and pion polarizabilities is derived and shown to be in excellent agreement with several models.
We study the response of the nucleon, as a system of three bound (constituent) non relativistic quarks, to external (quasi static) electric and magnetic fields. The approach, based on a sum rule technique, is applied to a large class of two and three-body interquark potentials. Lower and upper bounds to the electric polarizability and para-magnetic susceptibility are explicitly calculated within a large variety of constituent models and their values related to the features of the interquark interaction picture. The rôle of three-body forces is investigated in details as well as the effects of …
A status report on the topic Compton scattering and polarizabilities is presented with emphasis on the scalar t-channel as entering into dispersion theory. Precise values for the polarizabilities are obtained leading to $α_p = 12.0\pm 0.6$ $(12.0)$, $β_p=1.9\mp 0.6$ $(1.9)$, $α_n= 12.5\pm 1.7$ $(13.4)$, $β_n= 2.7 \mp 1.8$ $(1.8)$ in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^3$ and $γ^{(p)}_π= -36.4 \pm 1.5$ $(-36.6)$, $γ^{(n)}_π= 58.6 \pm 4.0$ $(58.3)$, $(γ^{(p)}_0= -0.58\pm 0.20)$, $(γ^{(n)}_0 = +0.38\pm 0.22)$ in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^4$, for the proton (p) and neutron (n), respectively. The data given with a…
We analyze polarized Compton scattering which provides information on the spin-structure of the nucleon. For scattering processes with photon energies up to 100 MeV the spin-structure dependence can be encoded into four independent parameters-the so-called spin-polarizabilities $γ_i, i=1...4$ of the nucleon, which we calculate within the framework of the "small scale expansion" in SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specific application is made to "forward" and "backward" spin- polarizabilities.
The correction to the hydrogen Lamb shift due to the proton electric and magnetic polarizabilities is expressed analytically through their static values, which are known from experiment. The numerical value of the correction to the hydrogen 1S state is $ - 71 \pm 11 \pm 7$ Hz. Correction to the H-D 1S-2S -- isotope shift due to the proton and neutron polarizabilities is estimated as $ 53 \pm 9 \pm 11$ Hz.
A covariant model of elastic pion-nucleon scattering based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation is presented. The kernel consists of s- and u-channel nucleon and delta poles, along with rho and sigma exchange in the t-channel. A good fit is obtained to the s- and p-wave phase shifts up to the two-pion production threshold.
We examine the polarized doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon using chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). The polarized VVCS contains a wealth of information on the spin structure of the nucleon which is relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of the polarized VVCS amplitudes $S_1(ν, Q^2)$ and $S_2(ν, Q^2)$, and the corresponding polarized spin structure functions $g_1(x, Q^2)$ and $g_2(x,Q^2)$. Our results for the moments of polarized structu…
Using the manifestly covariant spectator theory, and modeling the nucleon as a system of three constituent quarks with their own electromagnetic structure, we show that all four nucleon electromagnetic form factors can be very well described by a manifestly covariant nucleon wave function with zero orbital angular momentum. Since the concept of wave function depends on the formalism, the conclusions of light-cone theory requiring nonzero angular momentum components are not inconsistent with our results. We also show that our model gives a qualitatively correct description of deep inelastic sca…
Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, the symmetry energy $J$ and its density slope parameter $L$ are decomposed in terms of the nucleon self-energies within the covariant density functional (CDF) theory. It is found that two structural connections between the different ingredients of $J$ and $L$ construct the fundamental correlation between $L$ and $J$ in the relativistic covariant framework, while the additional contribution from the isovector scalar channel of nucleon-nucleon interaction and those from the second-order symmetry self-energies lead to a deviation, especially the latter li…
