This paper is a brief report to our submission to the VIPriors Object Detection Challenge. Object Detection has attracted many researchers' attention for its full application, but it is still a challenging task. In this paper, we study analysis the characteristics of the data, and an effective data enhancement method is proposed. We carefully choose the model which is more suitable for training from scratch. We benefit a lot from using softnms and model fusion skillfully.
Instance segmentation is applied widely in image editing, image analysis and autonomous driving, etc. However, insufficient data is a common problem in practical applications. The Visual Inductive Priors(VIPriors) Instance Segmentation Challenge has focused on this problem. VIPriors for Data-Efficient Computer Vision Challenges ask competitors to train models from scratch in a data-deficient setting, but there are some visual inductive priors that can be used. In order to address the VIPriors instance segmentation problem, we designed a Task-Specific Data Augmentation(TS-DA) strategy and Infer…

In this report, we descibe our approach to the ECCV 2020 VIPriors Object Detection Challenge which took place from March to July in 2020. We show that by using state-of-the-art data augmentation strategies, model designs, and post-processing ensemble methods, it is possible to overcome the difficulty of data shortage and obtain competitive results. Notably, our overall detection system achieves 36.6$\%$ AP on the COCO 2017 validation set using only 10K training images without any pre-training or transfer learning weights ranking us 2nd place in the challenge.
In this paper, we introduce a data-efficient instance segmentation method we used in the 2021 VIPriors Instance Segmentation Challenge. Our solution is a modified version of Swin Transformer, based on the mmdetection which is a powerful toolbox. To solve the problem of lack of data, we utilize data augmentation including random flip and multiscale training to train our model. During inference, multiscale fusion is used to boost the performance. We only use a single GPU during the whole training and testing stages. In the end, our team achieved the result of 0.366 for AP@0.50:0.95 on the test s…

Semantic segmentation is one of the most attractive research fields in computer vision. In the VIPriors challenge, only very limited numbers of training samples are allowed, leading to that the current state-of-the-art and deep learning-based semantic segmentation techniques are hard to train well. To overcome this shortcoming, therefore, we propose edge-preserving guidance to obtain the extra prior information, to avoid the overfitting under small-scale training dataset. First, a two-channeled convolutional layer is concatenated to the last layer of the conventional semantic segmentation netw…

Learning from limited amounts of data is the hallmark of intelligence, requiring strong generalization and abstraction skills. In a machine learning context, data-efficient methods are of high practical importance since data collection and annotation are prohibitively expensive in many domains. Thus, coordinated efforts to foster progress in this area emerged recently, e.g., in the form of dedicated workshops and competitions. Besides a common benchmark, measuring progress requires strong baselines. We present such a strong baseline for data-efficient image classification on the VIPriors chall…

To address the problem of training on small datasets for action recognition tasks, most prior works are either based on a large number of training samples or require pre-trained models transferred from other large datasets to tackle overfitting problems. However, it limits the research within organizations that have strong computational abilities. In this work, we try to propose a data-efficient framework that can train the model from scratch on small datasets while achieving promising results. Specifically, by introducing a 3D central difference convolution operation, we proposed a novel C3D …

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved significant success in image classification by utilizing large-scale datasets. However, it is still of great challenge to learn from scratch on small-scale datasets efficiently and effectively. With limited training datasets, the concepts of categories will be ambiguous since the over-parameterized CNNs tend to simply memorize the dataset, leading to poor generalization capacity. Therefore, it is crucial to study how to learn more discriminative representations while avoiding over-fitting. Since the concepts of categories tend to be ambiguous,…
This paper discusses the technical challenges in maritime image processing and machine vision problems for video streams generated by cameras. Even well documented problems of horizon detection and registration of frames in a video are very challenging in maritime scenarios. More advanced problems of background subtraction and object detection in video streams are very challenging. Challenges arising from the dynamic nature of the background, unavailability of static cues, presence of small objects at distant backgrounds, illumination effects, all contribute to the challenges as discussed here…

We address the challenging problem of open world object detection (OWOD), where object detectors must identify objects from known classes while also identifying and continually learning to detect novel objects. Prior work has resulted in detectors that have a relatively low ability to detect novel objects, and a high likelihood of classifying a novel object as one of the known classes. We approach the problem by identifying the three main challenges that OWOD presents and introduce OW-RCNN, an open world object detector that addresses each of these three challenges. OW-RCNN establishes a new s…

While object detection is a common problem in computer vision, it is even more challenging when dealing with aerial satellite images. The variety in object scales and orientations can make them difficult to identify. In addition, there can be large amounts of densely packed small objects such as cars. In this project, we propose a few changes to the Faster-RCNN architecture. First, we experiment with different backbones to extract better features. We also modify the data augmentations and generated anchor sizes for region proposals in order to better handle small objects. Finally, we investiga…

In virtue of these effective strategies, our best single model could achieve a mAP of 61.90. After ensemble, the final mA…

The recently presented COCO detection challenge will most probably be the reference benchmark in object detection in the next years. COCO is two orders of magnitude larger than Pascal and has four times the number of categories; so in all likelihood researchers will be faced with a number of new challenges. At this point, without any finished round of the competition, it is difficult for researchers to put their techniques in context, or in other words, to know how good their results are. In order to give a little context, this note evaluates a hypothetical object detector consisting in an ora…

One promising option is to make use of image restoration and enhancement algorithms from the area of computational photography to improve the quality of the underlying frames in a way that also improves automatic visual recognition. Along these lines, exploratory work is needed to find out which image pre-processing algorithms, in combination with the strongest features and supervised machine learning approaches, are good candidates for difficult scenarios …

Detecting objects and estimating their pose remains as one of the major challenges of the computer vision research community. There exists a compromise between localizing the objects and estimating their viewpoints. The detector ideally needs to be view-invariant, while the pose estimation process should be able to generalize towards the category-level. This work is an exploration of using deep learning models for solving both problems simultaneously. For doing so, we propose three novel deep learning architectures, which are able to perform a joint detection and pose estimation, where we grad…

We describe our two-stage instance segmentation framework we use to compete in the challenge. The first stage of our framework consists of an object detector, which generates object proposals in the format of bounding boxes. Then, the images and the detected bounding boxes are fed to the second stage, where a segmentation network is applied to segment the objects in the bounding boxes. We train all our networks in a class-agnostic way. Our approach achieves the first place in the UVO 2021 Image-based Open-World Segmentation Challenge.
The recent COCO object detection dataset presents several new challenges for object detection. In particular, it contains objects at a broad range of scales, less prototypical images, and requires more precise localization. To address these challenges, we test three modifications to the standard Fast R-CNN object detector: (1) skip connections that give the detector access to features at multiple network layers, (2) a foveal structure to exploit object context at multiple object resolutions, and (3) an integral loss function and corresponding network adjustment that improve localization.
