In this paper, we introduce a multiscale framework based on adaptive edge basis functions to solve second-order linear elliptic PDEs with rough coefficients. One of the main results is that we prove the proposed multiscale method achieves nearly exponential convergence in the approximation error with respect to the computational degrees of freedom. Our strategy is to perform an energy orthogonal decomposition of the solution space into a coarse scale component comprising $a$-harmonic functions in each element of the mesh, and a fine scale component named the bubble part that can be computed locally and efficiently. The coarse scale component depends entirely on function values on edges. Our approximation on each edge is made in the Lions-Magenes space $H_{00}^{1/2}(e)$, which we will demonstrate to be a natural and powerful choice. We construct edge basis functions using local oversampling and singular value decomposition. When local information of the right-hand side is adaptively incorporated into the edge basis functions, we prove a nearly exponential convergence rate of the approximation error. Numerical experiments validate and extend our theoretical analysis; in particular, we observe no obvious degradation in accuracy for high-contrast media problems.
Historically, analysis for multiscale PDEs is largely unified while numerical schemes tend to be equation-specific. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for computing multiscale problems through random sampling. This is achieved by incorporating randomized SVD solvers and manifold learning techniques to numerically reconstruct the low-rank features of multiscale PDEs. We use multiscale radiative transfer equation and elliptic equation with rough media to showcase the application of this framework.
In this paper, we demonstrate the construction of generalized Rough Polyhamronic Splines (GRPS) within the Bayesian framework, in particular, for multiscale PDEs with rough coefficients. The optimal coarse basis can be derived automatically by the randomization of the original PDEs with a proper prior distribution and the conditional expectation given partial information on edge or derivative measurements. We prove the (quasi)-optimal localization and approximation properties of the obtained bases, and justify the theoretical results with numerical experiments.
We describe a numerical framework that uses random sampling to efficiently capture low-rank local solution spaces of multiscale PDE problems arising in domain decomposition. In contrast to existing techniques, our method does not rely on detailed analytical understanding of specific multiscale PDEs, in particular, their asymptotic limits. We present the application of the framework on two examples --- a linear kinetic equation and an elliptic equation with rough media. On these two examples, this framework achieves the asymptotic preserving property for the kinetic equations and numerical homo…
Learning time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) that govern evolutionary observations is one of the core challenges for data-driven inference in many fields. In this work, we propose to capture the essential dynamics of numerically challenging PDEs arising in multiscale modeling and simulation -- kinetic equations. These equations are usually nonlocal and contain scales/parameters that vary by several orders of magnitude. We introduce an efficient framework, Densely Connected Recurrent Neural Networks (DC-RNNs), by incorporating a multiscale ansatz and high-order implicit-explici…

In this paper, an online multiscale model reduction method is presented for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with multiplicative noise, where the diffusion coefficient is spatially multiscale and the noise perturbation nonlinearly depends on the diffusion dynamics. It is necessary to efficiently compute all possible trajectories of the stochastic dynamics for quantifying model's uncertainty and statistic moments. The multiscale diffusion and nonlinearity may cause the computation intractable. To overcome the multiscale difficulty, a constraint energy minimizing generalized mul…
We investigate multiscale finite element methods for an elliptic distributed optimal control problem with rough coefficients. They are based on the (local) orthogonal decomposition methodology of Målqvist and Peterseim.
We introduce an algebraic multiscale method for two--dimensional problems. The method uses the generalized multiscale finite element method based on the quadrilateral nonconforming finite element spaces. Differently from the one--dimensional algebraic multiscale method, we apply the dimension reduction techniques to construct multiscale basis functions. Also moment functions are considered to impose continuity between local basis functions. Some representative numerical results are presented.
We propose a data-driven approach to solve multiscale elliptic PDEs with random coefficients based on the intrinsic low dimension structure of the underlying elliptic differential operators. Our method consists of offline and online stages. At the offline stage, a low dimension space and its basis are extracted from the data to achieve significant dimension reduction in the solution space. At the online stage, the extracted basis will be used to solve a new multiscale elliptic PDE efficiently. The existence of low dimension structure is established by showing the high separability of the under…
There is an intimate connection between numerical upscaling of multiscale PDEs and scattered data approximation of heterogeneous functions: the coarse variables selected for deriving an upscaled equation (in the former) correspond to the sampled information used for approximation (in the latter). As such, both problems can be thought of as recovering a target function based on some coarse data that are either artificially chosen by an upscaling algorithm, or determined by some physical measurement process. The purpose of this paper is then to study that, under such a setup and for a specific e…
In his monograph Chebyshev and Fourier Spectral Methods, John Boyd claimed that, regarding Fourier spectral methods for solving differential equations, ``[t]he virtues of the Fast Fourier Transform will continue to improve as the relentless march to larger and larger [bandwidths] continues''. This paper attempts to further the virtue of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) as not only bandwidth is pushed to its limits, but also the dimension of the problem. Instead of using the traditional FFT however, we make a key substitution: a high-dimensional, sparse Fourier transform (SFT) paired with rando…
In this paper we propose an idea of constructing a macro--scale matrix system given a micro--scale matrix linear system. Then the macro--scale system is solved at cheaper computing costs. The method uses the idea of the generalized multiscale finite element method based. Some numerical results are presented.
In this paper, we propose a Galerkin finite element method for the elliptic optimal control problem governed by the Riesz space-fractional PDEs on 2D domains with control variable being discretized by variational discretization technique. The optimality condition is derived and priori error estimates of control, costate and state variables are successfully established. Numerical test is carried out to illustrate the accuracy performance of this approach.
We propose a multiscale approach for an elliptic multiscale setting with general unstructured diffusion coefficients that is able to achieve high-order convergence rates with respect to the mesh parameter and the polynomial degree. The method allows for suitable localization and does not rely on additional regularity assumptions on the domain, the diffusion coefficient, or the exact (weak) solution as typically required for high-order approaches. Rigorous a priori error estimates are presented with respect to the involved discretization parameters, and the interplay between these parameters as…
We formulate and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive finite element method (GOAFEM) for a semilinear elliptic PDE and a linear goal functional. The strategy involves the finite element solution of a linearized dual problem, where the linearization is part of the adaptive strategy. Linear convergence and optimal algebraic convergence rates are shown.
Multiscale elliptic equations with scale separation are often approximated by the corresponding homogenized equations with slowly varying homogenized coefficients (the G-limit). The traditional homogenization techniques typically rely on the periodicity of the multiscale coefficients, thus finding the G-limits often requires sophisticated techniques in more general settings even when multiscale coefficient is known, if possible. Alternatively, we propose a simple approach to estimate the G-limits from (noisy-free or noisy) multiscale solution data, either from the existing forward multiscale s…
In this work, we derive a priori error estimate of the mixed residual method when solving some elliptic PDEs. Our work is the first theoretical study of this method. We prove that the neural network solutions will converge if we increase the training samples and network size without any constraint on the ratio of training samples to the network size. Besides, our results suggest that the mixed residual method can recover high order derivatives better than the deep Ritz method, which has also been verified by our numerical experiments.
We propose a First-Order System Least Squares (FOSLS) method based on deep-learning for numerically solving second-order elliptic PDEs. The method we propose is capable of dealing with either variational and non-variational problems, and because of its meshless nature, it can also deal with problems posed in high-dimensional domains. We prove the $Γ$-convergence of the neural network approximation towards the solution of the continuous problem, and extend the convergence proof to some well-known related methods. Finally, we present several numerical examples illustrating the performance of our…
Based on the Fourier extension, we propose an oversampling collocation method for solving the elliptic partial differential equations with variable coefficients over arbitrary irregular domains. This method only uses the function values on the equispaced nodes, which has low computational cost and versatility. While a variety of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, it shows that the approximation error fast reaches a plateau with increasing the degrees of freedom, due to the inherent ill-conditioned of frames.
This paper establishes the optimal $H^1$-norm error estimate for a nonstandard finite element method for approximating $H^2$ strong solutions of second order linear elliptic PDEs in non-divergence form with continuous coefficients. To circumvent the difficulty of lacking an effective duality argument for this class of PDEs, a new analysis technique is introduced; the crux of it is to establish an $H^1$-norm stability estimate for the finite element approximation operator which mimics a similar estimate for the underlying PDE operator recently established by the authors and its proof is based o…
In this paper, we present proofs of the coerciveness of first-order system least-squares methods for general (possibly indefinite) second-order linear elliptic PDEs under a minimal uniqueness assumption. For general linear second-order elliptic PDEs, the uniqueness, existence, and well-posedness are equivalent due to the compactness of the operator and Fredholm alternative. Thus only a minimal uniqueness assumption is assumed: the homogeneous equation has a unique zero solution. The coerciveness of the standard variational problem is not required. The paper's main contribution is our first pro…
In this paper, we study the stabilizer-free weak Galerkin methods on polytopal meshes for a class of second order elliptic boundary value problems of divergence form and with gradient nonlinearity in the principal coefficient. With certain assumptions on the nonlinear coefficient, we show that the discrete problem has a unique solution. This is achieved by showing that the associated operator satisfies certain continuity and monotonicity properties. With the help of these properties, we derive optimal error estimates in the energy norm. We present several numerical examples to verify the error…
In this short, conceptual paper we observe that essentially the same mathematics applies in three contexts with disparate literatures: (1) sigmoidal and RBF approximation of smooth functions, (2) rational approximation of analytic functions near singularities, and (3) $hp$ mesh refinement for solution of PDEs. The relationship of (1) and (2) is as simple as the change of variables $s = \log(x)$, and our informal mnemonic for this relationship is ``sigmoid = log(ratapprox).''
