We report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and magnetic critical behavior in van der Waals crystal CrCl$_3$. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_M^{max} \sim 14.6$ J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and the relative cooling power $RCP \sim 340.3$ J kg$^{-1}$ near $T_c$ with a magnetic field change of 5 T are much larger when compared to CrI$_{3}$ or CrBr$_{3}$. The rescaled $ΔS_M(T,H)$ curves collapse onto a universal curve, confirming the second order ferromagnetic transition. Further critical behavior analysis around $T_c$ presents a set of critical exponents $β$ = 0.28(1) with $T_c$ = 19.4(2) K, $γ$ = 0.89(1) with $T_c$ = 18.95(8) K, and $δ$ = 4.6(1) at $T_c$ = 19 K, which are close to those of theoretical tricritical mean field model.
Two-dimensional magnets could potentially revolutionize information technology, but their potential application to cooling technology and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a material down to the monolayer limit remain unexplored. Herein, we reveal through multiscale calculations the existence of giant MCE and its strain tunability in monolayer magnets such as CrX$_3$ (X=F, Cl, Br, I), CrAX (A=O, S, Se; X=F, Cl, Br, I), and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The maximum adiabatic temperature change ($ΔT_\text{ad}^\text{max}$), maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change, and specific cooling power in monolayer CrF$_3…
We present the results of a thorough study of the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of a ludwigite crystal Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60 - 350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (92 K), capacity possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of capacity is observed in the temperature range of 95 - 160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The…
We exploit the magnetic interlayer coupling in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3 superlattices to realize a crossover between inverse and conventional magnetic entropy changes. Our data reveal a strong anisotropic nature of the magnetocaloric effect due to the magnetic anisotropy of the superlattice. Therefore, artificial superlattices built from ferromagnetic materials that can be used to alter the magnetic structure as well as the magnetic anisotropy, could also be utilized for tuning the magnetocaloric properties, which may open a constructive approach for magnetic refrigeration applications.
This chapter reviews the basic physics and thermodynamics that govern magnetocaloric materials. The thermodynamics of magnetic materials is discussed by introducing relevant free energy terms together with their microscopic origin leading to a discussion of the sources of entropy that can change in an applied magnetic field. Such entropies account for measurable magnetocaloric effects, especially in the vicinity of magnetic phase transitions. Particular attention is devoted to first order magnetic transitions that involve the coupling of spin, lattice, electronic and anisotropic magneto-crysta…
The rotating magnetocaloric effect (RMCE) is a recent interest in magnetic refrigeration technique in which the cooling effect is attained by rotating the anisotropic magnetocaloric material from one orientation to the other in a fixed magnetic field. In this work, we report the anisotropic magnetocaloric properties of single crystals of the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$S$_{2}$ for magnetic field $H\parallel c$ axis and $H\parallel ab$ plane. We observed a significant (factor of $2$) difference between the magnetocaloric effect measured in both orientations. The rotating magnet…
It is known that orthorhombic RMnO3 multiferroics (R = magnetic rare earth) with low symmetry exhibit a large rotating magnetocaloric effect because of their strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In this paper, we demonstrate that the hexagonal ErMnO3 single crystals also unveils a giant rotating magnetocaloric effect that can be obtained by spinning them in constant magnetic fields around their a or b axes. When the ErMnO3 crystal is rotated with the magnetic field initially parallel to the c-axis, the resulting entropy change reaches maximum values of 7, 17 and 20 J/kg K under a constant mag…
Magnetocaloric cooling offers the potential to improve the efficiency of refrigeration devices and hence cut the significant CO2 emissions associated with cooling processes. A critical issue in deployment of this technology is the mechanical degradation of the magnetocaloric material during processing and operation, leading to limited service-life. The mechanical properties of hydrogenated La(Fe,Mn,Si)13-based magnetocaloric material are studied using macroscale bending tests of polycrystalline specimens and in situ micropillar compression tests of single crystal specimens. The impact of hydro…

In this manuscript, we propose a method to prepare small flakes of DyCu2. On top of that we also report on the magnetocaloric effect and nature of magnetic transition of a strongly anisotropic DyCu2 in its low dimension. Magnetization measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 5 to 100 K and up to the maximum magnetic field strength of 50 kOe. Magnetic entropy change delta SM is estimated using the well known Maxwells equations and is found to be 4.31 J per kg K. Indeed, the delta SM peak broadened marginally compared with its bulk DyCu2 and such a broadening can be attributed t…
We present a comprehensive investigation on anisotropic magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the quasi-two-dimensional weak itinerant ferromagnet trigonal Cr$_{0.62}$Te single crystals. Magnetic-anisotropy-induced satellite transition $T^*$ is observed at low fields applied parallel to the $ab$ plane below $T_c$. The $T^*$ is featured by an anomalous magnetization downturn, similar to that in structurally related CrI$_3$, and shows a monotonous shift towards lower temperature with increasing field. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also reflected in magnetic entropy change $ΔS_M(T,H)$ and …

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both…
Co3Sn2S2 has generated a growing interest as a rare example of the highly uniaxial anisotropic kagome ferromagnet showing a combination of frustrated-lattice magnetism and topology. Recently, via precise measurements of the magnetization and AC susceptibility we have found a low-field anomalous magnetic phase (A-phase) with very slow spin dynamics that appears just below the Curie temperature (T_C). The A-phase hosts high-density domain bubbles after cooling through T_C as revealed in a previous in-situ Lorentz-TEM study. Here, we present further signatures of the anomalous magnetic transition…
The crystal structure and magnetic properties of MnCoxFe1-xSi (x=0-0.5) compounds were investigated. With increasing Fe content, the unit cell changes anisotropically and the magnetic property evolves gradually: Curie temperature decreases continuously, the first-order metamagnetic transition from a low-temperature helical antiferromagnetic state to a high-temperature ferromagnetic state disappears gradually and then a spin-glass-like state and another antiferromagnetic state emerge in the low temperature region. The Curie transition leads to a moderate conventional entropy change. The metamag…
