We propose a method at the intersection of Computer Vision and Computer Graphics fields, which automatically generates RGBD images using neural networks, based on previously seen and synchronized video, depth and pose signals. Since the models must be able to reconstruct both texture (RGB) and structure (Depth), it creates an implicit representation of the scene, as opposed to explicit ones, such as meshes or point clouds. The process can be thought of as neural rendering, where we obtain a function f : Pose -> RGBD, which we can use to navigate through the generated scene, similarly to graphics simulations. We introduce two new datasets, one based on synthetic data with full ground truth information, while the other one being recorded from a drone flight in an university campus, using only video and GPS signals. Finally, we propose a fully unsupervised method of generating datasets from videos alone, in order to train the Pose2RGBD networks. Code and datasets are available at:: https://gitlab.com/mihaicristianpirvu/pose2rgbd.

Estimating3D hand poses from RGB images is essentialto a wide range of potential applications, but is challengingowing to substantial ambiguity in the inference of depth in-formation from RGB images. State-of-the-art estimators ad-dress this problem by regularizing3D hand pose estimationmodels during training to enforce the consistency betweenthe predicted3D poses and the ground-truth depth maps. However, these estimators rely on both RGB images and thepaired depth maps during training. In this study, we proposea conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) model, called Depth-image Guided G…

Can faces acquired by low-cost depth sensors be useful to catch some characteristic details of the face? Typically the answer is no. However, new deep architectures can generate RGB images from data acquired in a different modality, such as depth data. In this paper, we propose a new \textit{Deterministic Conditional GAN}, trained on annotated RGB-D face datasets, effective for a face-to-face translation from depth to RGB. Although the network cannot reconstruct the exact somatic features for unknown individual faces, it is capable to reconstruct plausible faces; their appearance is accurate e…

The raw depth image captured by the indoor depth sensor usually has an extensive range of missing depth values due to inherent limitations such as the inability to perceive transparent objects and limited distance range. The incomplete depth map burdens many downstream vision tasks, and a rising number of depth completion methods have been proposed to alleviate this issue. While most existing methods can generate accurate dense depth maps from sparse and uniformly sampled depth maps, they are not suitable for complementing the large contiguous regions of missing depth values, which is common a…

Accurate three-dimensional perception is a fundamental task in several computer vision applications. Recently, commercial RGB-depth (RGB-D) cameras have been widely adopted as single-view depth-sensing devices owing to their efficient depth-sensing abilities. However, the depth quality of most RGB-D sensors remains insufficient owing to the inherent noise from a single-view environment. Recently, several studies have focused on the single-view depth enhancement of RGB-D cameras. Recent research has proposed deep-learning-based approaches that typically train networks using high-quality supervi…

Diminished reality is a technology that aims to remove objects from video images and fills in the missing region with plausible pixels. Most conventional methods utilize the different cameras that capture the same scene from different viewpoints to allow regions to be removed and restored. In this paper, we propose an RGB-D image inpainting method using generative adversarial network, which does not require multiple cameras. Recently, an RGB image inpainting method has achieved outstanding results by employing a generative adversarial network. However, RGB inpainting methods aim to restore onl…

Training deep models for RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) often requires a large number of labeled RGB-D images. However, RGB-D data is not easily acquired, which limits the development of RGB-D SOD techniques. To alleviate this issue, we present a Dual-Semi RGB-D Salient Object Detection Network (DS-Net) to leverage unlabeled RGB images for boosting RGB-D saliency detection. We first devise a depth decoupling convolutional neural network (DDCNN), which contains a depth estimation branch and a saliency detection branch. The depth estimation branch is trained with RGB-D images and then used…
Combining RGB images and the corresponding depth maps in semantic segmentation proves the effectiveness in the past few years. Existing RGB-D modal fusion methods either lack the non-linear feature fusion ability or treat both modal images equally, regardless of the intrinsic distribution gap or information loss. Here we find that depth maps are suitable to provide intrinsic fine-grained patterns of objects due to their local depth continuity, while RGB images effectively provide a global view. Based on this, we propose a pixel differential convolution attention (DCA) module to consider geomet…

A key challenge for RGB-D segmentation is how to effectively incorporate 3D geometric information from the depth channel into 2D appearance features. We propose to model the effective receptive field of 2D convolution based on the scale and locality from the 3D neighborhood. Standard convolutions are local in the image space ($u, v$), often with a fixed receptive field of 3x3 pixels. We propose to define convolutions local with respect to the corresponding point in the 3D real-world space ($x, y, z$), where the depth channel is used to adapt the receptive field of the convolution, which yields…

This paper proposes a method for hand pose estimation from RGB images that uses both external large-scale depth image datasets and paired depth and RGB images as privileged information at training time. We show that providing depth information during training significantly improves performance of pose estimation from RGB images during testing. We explore different ways of using this privileged information: (1) using depth data to initially train a depth-based network, (2) using the features from the depth-based network of the paired depth images to constrain mid-level RGB network weights, and …

RGBD (RGB plus depth) object tracking is gaining momentum as RGBD sensors have become popular in many application fields such as robotics. However, the best RGBD trackers are extensions of the state-of-the-art deep RGB trackers. They are trained with RGB data and the depth channel is used as a sidekick for subtleties such as occlusion detection. This can be explained by the fact that there are no sufficiently large RGBD datasets to 1) train deep depth trackers and to 2) challenge RGB trackers with sequences for which the depth cue is essential. This work introduces a new RGBD tracking dataset -…

Depth (D) indicates occlusion and is less sensitive to illumination changes, which make depth attractive modality for Visual Object Tracking (VOT). Depth is used in RGBD object tracking where the best trackers are deep RGB trackers with additional heuristic using depth maps. There are two potential reasons for the heuristics: 1) the lack of large RGBD tracking datasets to train deep RGBD trackers and 2) the long-term evaluation protocol of VOT RGBD that benefits from heuristics such as depth-based occlusion detection. In this work, we study how far D-only tracking can go if trained with large …

This article describes a technique to augment a typical RGBD sensor by integrating depth estimates obtained via Structure-from-Motion (SfM) with sensor depth measurements. Limitations in the RGBD depth sensing technology prevent capturing depth measurements in four important contexts: (1) distant surfaces (>5m), (2) dark surfaces, (3) brightly lit indoor scenes and (4) sunlit outdoor scenes. SfM technology computes depth via multi-view reconstruction from the RGB image sequence alone. As such, SfM depth estimates do not suffer the same limitations and may be computed in all four of the previou…

Then, we summarize the existing datasets and the evaluation metrics. We benchmark a representative set of RGBD trackers, and give detailed analyses based on their performances. Particularly…
RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) is usually formulated as a problem of classification or regression over two modalities, i.e., RGB and depth. Hence, effective RGBD feature modeling and multi-modal feature fusion both play a vital role in RGB-D SOD. In this paper, we propose a depth-sensitive RGB feature modeling scheme using the depth-wise geometric prior of salient objects. In principle, the feature modeling scheme is carried out in a depth-sensitive attention module, which leads to the RGB feature enhancement as well as the background distraction reduction by capturing the depth geometry…

Recent RGB-D semantic segmentation has motivated research interest thanks to the accessibility of complementary modalities from the input side. Existing works often adopt a two-stream architecture that processes photometric and geometric information in parallel, with few methods explicitly leveraging the contribution of depth cues to adjust the sampling position on RGB images. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to incorporate the depth information in the RGB convolutional neural network (CNN), termed Z-ACN (Depth-Adapted CNN). Specifically, our Z-ACN generates a 2D depth-adapted offse…
The goal of our work is to complete the depth channel of an RGB-D image. Commodity-grade depth cameras often fail to sense depth for shiny, bright, transparent, and distant surfaces. To address this problem, we train a deep network that takes an RGB image as input and predicts dense surface normals and occlusion boundaries. Those predictions are then combined with raw depth observations provided by the RGB-D camera to solve for depths for all pixels, including those missing in the original observation. This method was chosen over others (e.g., inpainting depths directly) as the result of exten…

Depth information available from an RGB-D camera can be useful in segmenting salient objects when figure/ground cues from RGB channels are weak. This has motivated the development of several RGB-D saliency datasets and algorithms that use all four channels of the RGB-D data for both training and inference. Unfortunately, existing RGB-D saliency datasets are small, which may lead to overfitting and limited generalization for diverse scenarios. Here we propose a semi-supervised system for RGB-D saliency detection that can be trained on smaller RGB-D saliency datasets without saliency ground trut…

We describe a method that predicts, from a single RGB image, a depth map that describes the scene when a masked object is removed - we call this "counterfactual depth" that models hidden scene geometry together with the observations. Our method works for the same reason that scene completion works: the spatial structure of objects is simple. But we offer a much higher resolution representation of space than current scene completion methods, as we operate at pixel-level precision and do not rely on a voxel representation. Furthermore, we do not require RGBD inputs. Our method uses a standard en…
