In this revised version we have slighly simplified the proof of (a) implies (b) in Section 3.2. The proof of (d) implies (a) in Section 3.3 has been modified to address some issue. The argument uses Lemma 3.33 whose proof is given in Appendix A. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1908.02268
In nice environments, such as Lipschitz or chord-arc domains, it is well-known that the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic operator in $L^p$, for some finite $p$, is equivalent to the fact that the associated elliptic measure belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_\infty$. In turn, any of these conditions occurs if and only if the gradient of every bounded null solution satisfies a Carleson measure estimate. This has been recently extended to much rougher settings such as those of 1-sided chord-arc domains, that is, sets which are quantitatively open and connected with a boundary which is Ahlfors-David regular.
In this paper, we work in the same environment and consider a qualitative analog of the latter equivalence showing that one can characterize the absolute continuity of the surface measure with respect to the elliptic measure in terms of the finiteness almost everywhere of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution. As a consequence of our main result particularized to the Laplace operator and some previous results, we show that the boundary of the domain is rectifiable if and only if the truncated conical square function is finite almost everywhere for any bounded harmonic function. Also, we obtain that for two given elliptic operators $L_1$ and $L_2$, the absolute continuity of the surface measure with respect to the elliptic measure of $L_1$ is equivalent to the same property for $L_2$ provided the disagreement of the coefficients satisfy some quadratic estimate in truncated cones for almost everywhere vertex. Finally for the case on which $L_2$ is either the transpose of $L_1$ or its symmetric part we show the equivalence of the corresponding absolute continuity upon assuming that the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for almost every vertex.
We generalize to the setting of 1-sided chord-arc domains, that is, to domains satisfying the interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness) and which have an Ahlfors regular boundary, a result of Kenig-Kirchheim-Pipher-Toro, in which Carleson measure estimates for bounded solutions of the equation $Lu=-{\rm div}(A\nabla u) = 0$ with $A$ being a real (not necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic matrix, imply that the corresponding elliptic measure belongs to the Muckenhoupt $A_\infty$ class…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided chord-arc domain, that is, a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness), and whose boundary $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors regular. Consider $L_0$ and $L$ two real symmetric divergence form elliptic operators and let $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ be the associated elliptic measures. We show that if $ω_{L_0}\in A_\infty(σ)$, where $σ=H^n|_{\partialΩ}$, and $L$ is a perturbation of $L_0$ (in the sense that the discrepa…
We show that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 1$, is a uniform domain (aka 1-sided NTA domain), i.e., a domain which enjoys interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions, then uniform rectifiability of the boundary of $Ω$ implies the existence of exterior Corkscrew points at all scales, so that in fact, $Ω$ is a chord-arc domain, i.e., a domain with an Ahlfors-David regular boundary which satisfies both interior and exterior Corkscrew conditions, and an interior Harnack Chain condition. We discuss some implications of this result, for theorems of F. and M. Riesz type, and for certain f…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), i.e., a set which satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Assume that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition. Let $L_0u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators, and write $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ for the associated elliptic measures. The goal of this program is to find sufficient c…
We show that if $Ω$ is a vanishing chord-arc domain and $L$ is a divergence-form elliptic operator with Hölder-continuous coefficient matrix, then $\log k_L \in VMO$, where $k_L$ is the elliptic kernel for $L$ in the domain $Ω$. This extends the previous work of Kenig and Toro in the case of the Laplacian.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, be 1-sided NTA domain (aka uniform domain), i.e. a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions, and assume that $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular. We characterize the rectifiability of $\partialΩ$ in terms of the absolute continuity of surface measure with respect to harmonic measure. We also show that these are equivalent to the fact that $\partialΩ$ can be covered $\mathcal{H}^n$-a.e. by a countable union of portions of boundaries of bounded chord-arc subdomains of $Ω$ and to the fact that $\partialΩ$ p…
We study the chord-arc Jordan curves that satisfy the Cotlar-type inequality $T_*(f)\lesssim M^2(Tf),$ where $T$ is the Cauchy transform, $T_*$ is the maximal Cauchy transform and $M$ is the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function. Under the background assumption of asymptotic quasi-conformality we find a characterization of such curves in terms of the smoothness of a parametrization of the curve.
In the present paper we study the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for second order divergence form elliptic operators with bounded measurable coefficients which are small perturbations of given operators in rough domains beyond the Lipschitz category. In our approach, the development of the theory of tent spaces on these domains is essential.
We study the boundary regularity of solutions to divergence form operators which are small perturbations of operators for which the boundary regularity of solutions is known. An operator is a small perturbation of another operator if the deviation function of the coefficients satisfies a Carleson measure condition with small norm. We extend Escauriaza's result on Lipschitz domains to chord arc domains with small constant. In particular we prove that if $L_1$ is a small perturbation of $L_0$ and $\log k_0$ has small BMO norm so does $\log k_1$. Here $k_i$ denotes the density of the elliptic mea…

We extend in two directions the notion of perturbations of Carleson type for the Dirichlet problem associated to an elliptic real second-order divergence-form (possibly degenerate, not necessarily symmetric) elliptic operator. First, in addition to the classical perturbations of Carleson type, that we call additive Carleson perturbations, we introduce scalar-multiplicative and antisymmetric Carleson perturbations, which both allow non-trivial differences at the boundary. Second, we consider domains which admit an elliptic PDE in a broad sense: we count as examples the 1-sided NTA (a.k.a. unifo…
We study parabolic chord arc domains, introduced by Hofmann, Lewis and Nyström, and prove a free boundary regularity result below the continuous threshold. More precisely, we show that a Reifenberg flat, parabolic chord arc domain whose Poisson kernel has logarithm in VMO must in fact be a vanishing chord arc domain (i.e. satisfies a vanishing Carleson measure condition). This generalizes, to the parabolic setting, a result of Kenig and Toro and answers in the affirmative a question left open in the aforementioned paper of Hofmann et al. A key step in this proof is a classification of "flat" b…
We show that if $0<t<s\leq n-1$, $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ with lower $s$-content regular complement, and $z\in Ω$, there is a chord-arc domain $Ω_{z}\subseteq Ω$ with center $z$ so that $\mathscr{H}^{t}_{\infty}(\partialΩ_{z}\cap \partialΩ)\gtrsim_{t} \textrm{dist}(z,Ω^{c})^{t}$. This was originally shown by Koskela, Nandi, and Nicolau with John domains in place of chord-arc domains when $n=2$, $s=1$, and $Ω$ is a simply connected planar domain. Domains satisfying the conclusion of this result support $(p,β)$-Hardy inequalities for $β<p-n+t$ by a result of Koskela and Lehrbäck; Lehrbäck als…
In the present paper, we show that for an optimal class of elliptic operators with non-smooth coefficients on a 1-sided Chord-Arc domain, the boundary of the domain is uniformly rectifiable if and only if the Green function $G$ behaves like a distance function to the boundary, in the sense that $\Big|\frac{\nabla G(X)}{G(X)}-\frac{\nabla D(X)}{D(X)}\Big|^2D(X) dX$ is the density of a Carleson measure, where $D$ is a regularized distance adapted to the boundary of the domain. The main ingredient in our proof is a corona decomposition that is compatible with Tolsa's $α$-number of uniformly recti…
We study the properties of harmonic measure in semi-uniform domains. Aikawa and Hirata showed in \cite{AH08} that, for John domains satisfying the capacity density condition (CDC), the doubling property for harmonic measure is equivalent to the domain being semi-uniform. Our first result removes the John condition by showing that any domain satisfying the CDC whose harmonic measure is doubling is semi-uniform. Next, we develop a substitute for some classical estimates on harmonic measure in nontangentially accessible domains that works in semi-uniform domains. We also show that semi-uniform do…
