We numerically investigate the flow control problem of the flow passing a stationary cylinder at a fixed Reynold number 500 using two attached control cylinders with different rotation rates. Compared to the traditional uniform (lattice) sampling method, we developed an active learning strategy based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), drastically reducing the number of simulations and accelerating the scientific findings. We also discussed the effects of parameters on different hydrodynamic coefficients, and verified the feasibility of this strategy. The mechanism of this asymmetric flow control model was also further studied by analyzing flow patterns.
The flow-induced deformation of a thin, elastic splitter plate attached to the rear of a circular cylinder and subjected to laminar pulsatile inflow is investigated. The cylinder and elastic splitter plate are contained within a narrow channel and the Reynolds number is mostly restricted to Re = 100, primarily covering the two-dimensional flow regime. An in-house fluid-structure interaction code is employed for simulations, which couples a sharp-interface immersed boundary method for the fluid dynamics with a finite-element method to treat the structural dynamics. The structural solver is impl…
We present azimuthal velocity profiles measured in a Taylor-Couette apparatus, which has been used as a model of stellar and planetary accretion disks. The apparatus has a cylinder radius ratio of $η= 0.716$, an aspect-ratio of $Γ= 11.74$, and the plates closing the cylinders in the axial direction are attached to the outer cylinder. We investigate angular momentum transport and Ekman pumping in the Rayleigh-stable regime. The regime is linearly stable and is characterized by radially increasing specific angular momentum. We present several Rayleigh-stable profiles for shear Reynolds numbers $…
This experimental study reports on the behavior of a filament attached to the rear of a three- dimensional cylinder. The axis of the cylinder is placed normal to a uniform incoming flow and the filament is free to move in the cylinder wake. The mean position of the filament is studied as a function of the filament length L. It is found that for long (L/D > 6.5, where D is the cylinder diameter) and short (L/D < 2) filaments the mean position of the filament tends to align with the incoming flow, whereas for intermediate filament lengths (2 < L/D < 6.5) the filament lies down on the cylinder an…
Plane Poiseuille flow past a nanoscale cylinder that is arbitrarily confined (i.e., symmetrically or asymmetrically confined) in a slit channel is studied via hydrodynamic lubrication theory and molecular dynamics simulations, considering cases where the cylinder remains static or undergoes thermal motion. Lubrication theory predictions for the drag force and volumetric flow rate are in close agreement with molecular dynamics simulations of flows having molecularly thin lubrication gaps, despite the presence of significant structural forces induced by the crystalline structure of the modeled s…
A dual-step cylinder is comprised of a large diameter cylinder (D) with low aspect ratio (L/D) attached co-axially to the mid-span of a small diameter cylinder (d). The fluid dynamics video presented in this investigation is used to illustrate the effect of aspect ratio on dual step cylinder wake development for Re = 2100, D/d = 2, and 0.2 < L/D < 3. In addition, the video provides visualization of such flow phenomena as interaction of spanwise vortices, development of streamwise vortex filaments, and formation of Kelvin-Helmholtz rollers. The experiments were performed in a water flume at the…
During the operation of a seismic airgun source, a certain amount of compressed high-pressure air is released from the airgun chamber into the surrounding water, generating an expanding toroidal bubble attached to the airgun-body. The subsequent oscillations of the bubble generate low-frequency pressure waves, which are used to map the ocean subbottom, e.g., to locate oil and gas reserves. The bubble dynamic behavior and the emitted pressure waves are inevitably influenced by the airgun-body. However, the bubble-airgun-body interaction is far from well understood. This paper investigates the s…
By taking into account the hydrodynamic interactions in a one dimensional array of model cilia attached to a no-slip cylinderical surface, we investigate their synchronized motion. We show, how does the emergence of metachronal waves depend on the initial state of the system and investigate the conditions under which, the formation of symplectic and antiplectic waves are possible.
The paper presents the comparative study of the vortex-induced cooling of a heated channel for the four different cross-sections of the rigid cylinder, i.e., circular, square, semi-circular, and triangular, with or without the rigid/flexible splitter plate at the Reynolds number (based on the hydraulic diameter) of 200. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the flow and thermal performance for all the cases. For flexible plate cases, a partitioned approach is invoked to solve the coupled fluid-structure-convection problem. The simulations show the reduction in the thermal boundary lay…
A series of direct numerical simulations of Taylor-Couette (TC) flow, the flow between two coaxial cylinders, with the outer cylinder rotating and the inner one fixed, were performed. Three cases, with outer cylinder Reynolds numbers $Re_o$ of $Re_o=5.5\cdot10^4$, $Re_o=1.1\cdot10^5$ and $Re_o=2.2\cdot10^5$ were considered. The radius ratio $η=r_i/r_o$ was fixed to $η=0.909$ to mitigate the effects of curvature. The vertical aspect ratio $Γ$ was fixed to $Γ=2.09$. Being linearly stable, outer cylinder rotation TC flow is known to have very different behavior than pure inner cylinder rotation T…

A simple method to increase the flow power extraction efficiency of a circular cylinder, undergoing vortex-induced vibration (VIV), by confining it between two parallel plates is proposed. A two-dimensional numerical study was performed on VIV of a circular cylinder inside a parallel plate channel of height H at Reynolds number 150 to quantify the improvement. The cylinder is elastically mounted with a spring such that it is only free to vibrate in the direction transverse to the channel flow and has a fixed mass ratio (m*) of 10. The energy extraction process is modelled as a damper, with spa…
Although the stability properties of the wake past impervious bluff bodies have been widely examined in the literature, similar analyses regarding the flow around and through porous ones are still lacking. In this work, the effect of the porosity and permeability on the wake patterns of porous rectangular cylinders is numerically investigated at low to moderate Reynolds numbers in the framework of direct numerical simulation combined with local and global stability analyses. A modified Darcy-Brinkman formulation is employed here so as to describe the flow behavior inside the porous media, wher…
The generation of electrical power from Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) of a cylinder is investigated numerically. The cylinder is free to oscillate in the direction transverse to the incoming flow. The cylinder is attached to a magnet that can move along the axis of a coil made from conducting wire. The magnet and the coil together constitute a basic electrical generator. When the cylinder undergoes VIV, the motion of the magnet creates a voltage across the coil, which is connected to a resistive load. By Lenz's law, induced current in the coil applies a retarding force to the magnet. Effectiv…
An analysis is presented for the evaluation of the acoustic field of a rotating source in a non-uniform potential flow. Other than the restriction to low flow Mach numbers, the method is exact and general. The variation in radiation properties with source position is handled by representation as a Fourier series in source angle, giving rise to an asymmetrically varying acoustic field evaluated by summation of the series. The method is used to develop an exact solution for the model problem of a rotor operating near a cylinder in cross-flow and sample calculations demonstrate the accuracy of th…
Cavitating flow over a circular cylinder is investigated over a range of cavitation numbers for both laminar and turbulent regimes. We observe non-cavitating, cyclic and transitional cavitation regimes with reduction in freestream $σ$. The cavitation inside the Karman vortices in the cyclic regime, is significantly altered by the onset of "condensation front" propagation in the transitional regime. At the transition, an order of magnitude jump in shedding Strouhal number is observed as the dominant frequency shifts from periodic vortex shedding in the cyclic regime, to irregular-regular vortex…
Direct numerical simulations of the Taylor-Couette (TC) problem, the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, have been performed. The study focuses on TC flow with mild curvature (small gap) with a radius ratio of $η=r_i/r_o=0.909$, an aspect ratio of $Γ=L/d=2π/3$, and a stationary outer cylinder. Three inner cylinder Reynolds of $1\cdot10^5$, $2\cdot10^5$ and $3\cdot 10^5$ were simulated, corresponding to frictional Reynolds numbers between $Re_τ\approx 1400$ and $Re_τ\approx 4000$. An additional case with a large gap, $η=0.5$ and driving of $Re=2\cdot10^5$ was also per…
The two-dimensional flows around a cylinder between two parallel walls at Re=40 and Re=100 are simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The governing equations are Navier-Stokes equations. They are discretized with finite volume method (FVM) and the solution is iterated with PISO Algorithm. Then, the calculating results are compared with the numerical results in literature, and good agreements are obtained. After that, the mechanism of the formation of Karman vortex street is investigated and the instability of the entire flow field is analyzed with the energy gradient theory. It is …
Wetting of surfaces with porous coating is relevant for a wide variety of technical applications, such as printing technologies and heat transfer enhancement. Imbibition and evaporation of liquids on surfaces covered with porous layers are responsible for significant improvement of cooling efficiency during drop impact cooling and flow boiling on such surfaces. Up to now, no reliable model exists which is able to predict the kinetics of imbibition coupled with evaporation on surfaces with porous coatings. In this work we consider one of possible mechanisms of imbibition on a substrate covered …
In many engineering systems operating with a working fluid, the best efficiency is reached close to a condition of flow separation, which makes its prediction very crucial in industry. Providing that wall-based quantities can be measured, we know today how to obtain good predictions for two and three-dimensional steady and periodic flows. In these flows, the separation is defined on a fixed line attached to a material surface. The last case to elucidate is the one where this line is no longer attached to the wall but on the contrary is contained within the flow. This moving separation is proba…
We present the development and benchmarking of an in-house fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver. An implicit partitioned approach is utilized to couple a sharp-interface immersed boundary (IB) method based flow solver and a finite-element method based structural solver. In the present work, the coupling is accelerated using a dynamic under-relaxation scheme. The revised coupling is around two to three times faster and numerically stable, as compared to the one that uses a constant under-relaxation parameter. The solver is validated against two FSI benchmarks in which a thin, finite thickne…
New insight into the contribution of the microscale vortex evolution towards convection heat transfer in porous media is presented in this paper. The objective is to determine how the microscale vortices influence convection heat transfer in turbulent flow inside porous media. The microscale temperature distribution is analyzed using flow visualization in 2D using streamlines and in 3D using Q structures. The pertinent observations are supplemented with the comparison of surface skin friction and heat transfer using: (1) surface skin friction lines and (2) joint PDF of pressure and skin fricti…
