The quantum mechanical treatment of quadrupole radiation due to bremsstrahlung exact to all orders in the Coulomb interaction of two non-relativistically colliding charged spin-0 and unpolarized spin-1/2 particles is presented. We calculate the elements of the quadrupole tensor, and present analytical solutions for the double differential photon emission cross section of identical and non-identical particles. Contact is made to Born-level and quasi-classical results in the respective kinematic limits and effective energy loss rates are obtained. A generally valid formula for soft-photon emission is established and an approximate formula across the entire kinematic regime is constructed. The results apply to bremsstrahlung emission in the scattering of pairs of electrons and are hence relevant in the study of astrophysical phenomena. A definition of a Gaunt factor is proposed which should facilitate broad applicability of the results.
The exact result for non-relativistic quadrupole bremsstrahlung in a Coulomb field was established only recently in Pradler & Semmelrock (2020). It requires the evaluation and integration of hypergeometric functions across a wide range of parameters and arguments, which, in practice, is unfeasible. Here we provide a highly accurate tabulation of the Gaunt factor for quadrupole radiation, its thermal average in a Maxwellian plasma, and the associated cooling function over the entire kinematically relevant range. In addition, we provide a simple approximate formula for the emission cross section…
We study the process $qq\rightarrow qqg$ at lowest order in QCD perturbation theory to understand gluon radiation in the fragmentation region of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We arrive at a formula for gluon multiplicity that interpolates between $\sim 1/k_{\bot}^2$ behavior at low $k_{\bot}$, to $\sim 1/k_{\bot}^4$ at large $k_{\bot}$.
It is shown that the influence of the undulator field on the motion of a relativistic electron leads to a significant increase of the bremsstrahlung cross section on an atom near the end of the spectrum of undulator radiation. Observation of this effect is quite a realistic task.
The electron-neutrino bremsstrahlung process has been considered in the framework of electro-weak theory. The scattering cross section has been calculated in the center of mass frame and approximated to extreme relativistic as well as non-relativistic case. The rate of energy-loss via this type of bremsstrahlung process has been obtained both in non-degenerate and degenerate region. The effect of this electron-neutrino bremsstrahlung process in different ranges of temperature and density characterizing the late stages of stellar evolution has been discussed. It is found from our study that thi…
This paper continues the approach of Kostenko \& Thompson to calculating quantum electrodynamic processes in the ultrastrong magnetic field near some neutron stars, such as magnetars or merging binary neutron stars. Here we consider electron-positron scattering, the Coulomb scattering of electrons and positrons off ions, and relativistic $e^\pm$-ion bremsstrahlung. The evaluation of differential and total cross sections simplifies considerably when the magnetic field lies in the range $10^3B_{\rm Q} \gg B \gg B_{\rm Q}$, where $B_{\rm Q} \equiv m^2/e = 4.4\times 10^{13}$ G. Then, relativistic …
The evaluation of the electron-ion bremsstrahlung cross section exact to all orders in the Coulomb potential is computationally expensive due to the appearance of hypergeometric functions. Therefore tabulations are widely used. Here, we provide an approximate formula for the non-relativistic dipole process valid for all applicable relative velocities and photon energies. Its validity spans from the Born- to the classical regime and from soft-photon emission to the kinematic endpoint. The error remains below 3% (and widely below 1%) except at an isolated region of hard-photon emission at the qu…
Bremsstrahlung from relativistic heavy ions in a fixed target experiment at the LHC
Comparative study of nonperturbative electron-positron pair production by intense laser fields colliding with either bremsstrahlung $γ$-rays or relativistic ions
We costruct the relativistic operator of the quadrupole moment of two-particle composite spin one systems with zero orbital moment of the relative motion and derive explicit analytical expression for the quadrupole moment using the approach to relativistic composite systems based on our version of the instant-form relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM). We calculate the quadrupole moments of the rho meson and of the S-wave deuteron without any free parameters, using our unified pi&rho model (Phys. Rev.D 93, 036007 (2016); 97, 033007 (2018)) and our previous results on deuteron. Our calculation g…
Edge effects in spectra of non-dipole radiation from ultra-relativistic electrons passing through various finite targets are analyzed from a unified point of view. Examples include radiation in a finite magnet, bremsstrahlung at double scattering, and bremsstrahlung in an amorphous plate. A generalization of the encountered spectral decomposition property is proposed. The relevance of phenomena of jet-interjet radiation interference and electron time delay in the target is emphasized. Features produced by them in the radiation spectra are discussed.
The impact of a laser field on the process of photon radiation by an ultra-relativistic electron in an atomic field is investigated. The angular distribution and the spectrum of the radiated photon are derived. By means of the quasiclassical approximation, the obtained results are exact in the parameters of the laser field and the atomic field. It is shown that the impact of the laser field is significant even for fairly average values of the laser field parameters routinely achievable nowadays. Therefore, an experimental observation of the influence of the laser field on bremsstrahlung in the…
Preliminary data by the STAR collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider shows that the elliptic flow, $v_2$, and the average transverse momentum, $\langle p_t \rangle$, of final-state hadrons produced in high-multiplicity $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U collisions are negatively correlated. This observation brings experimental evidence of a significant prolate deformation, $β\approx 0.3$, in the colliding $^{238}$U nuclei. I show that a quantitative description of this new phenomenon can be achieved within the hydrodynamic framework of heavy-ion collisions, and that thus such kind of data in…
The axion-electron coupling $g_{ae}$ is a generic feature of non-hadronic axion models. This coupling may induce a variety of observable signatures, particularly in astrophysical environments. Here, we revisit the calculation of the axion-electron bremsstrahlung and provide a general formulation valid for a non-relativistic plasma with any level of degeneracy and for any axion mass. We apply our result to the Sun, red giant stars and white dwarfs. In particular, we prove that the approximations used to evaluate the axion emissivity in red giants agree with the exact result within $10\%$, compa…
We present the spatial distributions of electromagnetic fields ($\bf E$ and $\bf B$) and electromagnetic anomaly $ \bf E \cdot B$ in Au+Au collisions at the RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV based on a multi-phase transport model. A dipolar distribution of $\bf E \cdot B$ is observed in non-central collisions. We find that the coupling of the $\bf E \cdot B$ dipole and magnetic field $\bf B$ can induce an electric quadrupole moment which can further lead to the difference in elliptic flows between positive charged particles and negative charged particles through final interactions. The centrality…

Nuclear magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs), like intrinsic electric dipole moments of elementary particles, violate both parity and time-reversal symmetry and therefore probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We report on accurate relativistic coupled cluster calculations of the nuclear MQM interaction constants in BaF, YbF, BaOH, and YbOH. We elaborate on estimates of the uncertainty of our results. The implications of experiments searching for nonzero nuclear MQMs are discussed.
In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy ion collisions, the elliptic flow $v_2$ and triangular flow $v_3$ are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation $β_2$ and octupole deformation $β_3$ of the colliding nuclei. The relations between $v_n$ and $β_n$ have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration have just published precision $v_n$ data from isobaric $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions $v_{2,\mathrm{Ru}}>v_{2,\mathrm{Zr}}$ and $v_{3,\mathrm{Ru}}<v_{3,\mat…
