We classify all possible texture zeros in light neutrino mass matrix in diagonal charged lepton basis by considering Dirac nature of light neutrinos. For Hermitian nature of neutrino mass matrix, the number of possible texture zeros remain same as Majorana texture zeros, but with less free parameters due to the absence of additional Majorana CP phases. Relaxing the Hermitian nature of neutrino mass matrix lead to many more possibilities and freedom due to additional CP phases, mixing angles not constrained by neutrino data. While we find that none of the texture zeros in Hermitian case are allowed, in non-Hermitian case some textures even with four zeros are allowed. While most of the one-zero, two-zero and three-zero textures in this case are allowed, four-zero textures are tightly constrained with only 6 allowed out of 126 possibilities. The allowed textures also give interesting correlations between light neutrino parameters with sharp distinctions between normal and inverted mass ordering. Many of these allowed textures also saturate the Planck 2018 upper bound on the sum of absolute neutrino masses.
The magic textures are successful candidates of the correct texture for the Majorana neutrinos. In this study, we show that some types of magic texture for Majorana neutrinos approximately immanent in the flavor mass matrix for Dirac neutrinos. In addition, it turned out that the normal mass ordering of the Dirac neutrino masses is slightly preferable to the inverted mass ordering in the context of the magic textures.
The magic texture is one of the successful textures of the flavor neutrino mass matrix for Majorana neutrinos. In this paper, it turns out that two new types of magic textures are also consistent with the neutrino oscillation experiments, observation of cosmic microwave background radiation, and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The connection between these new magic textures and the leptogenesis scenario of the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is also discussed.
We show that it is possible to fully determine the neutrino mass spectrum from two-zero textures of the neutrino mass matrix. As a consequence, definite predictions can be obtained for the neutrinoless double beta decay.
The implications of a large value of the effective Majorana neutrino mass for a class of two texture zero neutrino mass matrices have been studied in the flavor basis. It is found that these textures predict near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle in the limit of large effective Majorana neutrino mass. It is noted that this prediction is independent of the values of solar and reactor neutrino mixing angles. We present the symmetry realization of these textures using the discrete cyclic group $Z_3$. It is found that the texture zeros realised in this work remain stable under renormalizat…
We present numerical and comprehensive analyses of the sixty hybrid textures of neutrinos, which have an equality of matrix elements and one zero. These textures are possibly derived from the discrete symmetry. Only six textures among sixty ones are excluded by the present experimental data. Since there are many textures which give similar predictions, the textures are classified based on the numerical results. The neutrinoless double beta decay is also examined in these textures. Our results suggest that there remain still rich structures of the neutrino mass matrix in the phenomenological po…
We have found three types of neutrino mass textures, which give maximal CP-violation as well as maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing. These textures are described by six real mass parameters: one specified by two complex flavor neutrino masses and two constrained ones and the others specified by three complex flavor neutrino masses. In each texture, we calculate mixing angles and masses as well as Majorana CP phases.
One- and two-zero textures for the flavor neutrino mass matrix have been successful in explaining mixing in the neutrino sector. Conservatively, six cases of one-zero textures and seven cases of two-zero textures are compatible with observations. We show that one case may be the most natural in the one- and two-zero textures schemes if tiny neutrino masses are generated by the type-II seesaw mechanism in triplet Higgs models.
We present analyses of the sixty hybrid textures of neutrino mass matrix, which have an equality of matrix elements and one zero. These textures are possibly derived in the models with discrete flavor symmetry.
In the two zero flavor neutrino mass matrix scheme with nonvanishing Majorana effective mass $M_{ee}$ for the neutrino less double beta decay, four textures are compatible with observed data. We obtain the complete list of the possible textures of four zero Dirac neutrino mass matrix $m_D$ in the seesaw mechanism providing these four flavor neutrino textures. Explicit analytical analysis of $m_D$ turns out to provide the relation of $m_D \propto \sqrt{M_{ee}}$.
Implications of recently measured leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$ as well as the other two mixing angles have been examined for Fritzsch-like mass matrices with minimal texture for Dirac neutrinos. Interestingly, the existing data seems to rule out this texture specific case of Dirac neutrinos for normal, inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenario of masses.
As a viable alternative to the LMA solution to the solar neutrino problem, the LOW solution is confronted with two-zero textures of the $3\times 3$ neutrino mass matrix. We find out nine acceptable textures, from which instructive predictions can be obtained for the absolute values of neutrino masses, Majorana phases of CP violation, and effective masses of the tritium beta decay and neutrinoless double beta decay.
We discuss the linkage between dark matter mass in the one-loop radiative seesaw model and the effective neutrino mass for the neutrino less double beta decay. This linkage, which has been already numerically suggested, is confirmed to be a reasonable relationship by deriving analytical expressions for two zero flavor neutrino mass texture.
In this paper, we derive in a novel approach the possible textures of neutrino mass matrix that can lead us to maximal atmospheric mixing angle and Dirac CP phase which are consistent with the current neutrino oscillation data. A total of eleven textures are thus found. Interestingly, the specific texture given by the $μ$-$τ$ reflection symmetry can be reproduced from one of the obtained textures. For these textures, some neutrino mass sum rules which relate the neutrino masses and Majorana CP phases will emerge.
We perform a systematic investigation of the texture structures of Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ having two texture zeros and an equality between two nonzero matrix elements, in the light of recent neutrino oscillation data. Among forty-two possible textures, it is found that only eight textures are compatible with the current experimental data at 3$σ$ C.L. Out of these phenomenologically viable textures, six follow normal mass ordering while remaining two satisfy the inverted mass ordering of neutrino mass spectrum. In the numerical analysis, we carry out a scan over the possible space …
Possible patterns of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M$ with one texture zero and one vanishing eigenvalue are classified and discussed. We find that three one-zero textures of $M$ with $m_1 =0$ and four one-zero textures of $M$ with $m_3 =0$ are compatible with current neutrino oscillation data. The implications of these phenomenological ans$\rm\ddot{a}$tze on the neutrino mass spectrum and the neutrinoless double beta decay are also explored in some detail.
We perform a systematic study of neutrino mass matrices having a vanishing cofactor and an equality between two cofactors of the mass matrix. Such texture structures of the effective neutrino mass matrix arise from type-I seesaw mechanism when the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is diagonal with equal elements and the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix has hybrid textures with one equality of matrix elements and one zero matrix element. For three right-handed neutrinos there are sixty possible hybrid textures out of which only six are excluded by the present experimental data. We show that …
In the light of refined and large reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$, we have revisited the texture three and two zero neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis. For Majorana neutrinos, it has been explicitly shown that all the texture three zero mass matrices remain ruled out. Further, for both normal and inverted mass ordering, for the texture two zero neutrino mass matrices one finds interesting constraints on the Dirac-like CP violating phase $δ$ and Majorana phases $ρ$ and $σ$.
Taking into account the latest neutrino oscillation data, we study texture zeros of the lepton mass matrices. Assuming the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D, the charged-lepton mass matrix M_l and the mass matrix of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos M_R to have three texture zeros, we show that the observed neutrino mixing angles can naturally be obtained. The phenomenological implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the CP-violating phases, the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta decay are explored.
Neutrino-mass textures proposed at high-scales are known to be unstable against radiative corrections especially for nearly degenerate eigen values. Within the renormalization group constraints we find a mechanism in a class of gauge theories which guarantees reproduction of any high-scale texture at low energies with radiative stability. We also show how the mechanism explains solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies through the bimaximal texture at high scale.
We study Majorana neutrino mass matrices that have two texture zeros, or two cofactor zeros, or one texture zero and one cofactor zero. The two texture/cofactor zero conditions give four constraints, which in conjunction with the five measured oscillation parameters completely determine the nine independent real parameters of the neutrino mass matrix. We also study the implications that future measurements of neutrinoless double beta decay and the Dirac CP phase will have on these cases.
We study a variety of different texture patterns in the basis in which the charged lepton mass matrix or neutrino mass matrix or neither are diagonal. The experimental results on the neutrinos provide sufficient restrictions to allow only a small number of simple patterns. We discuss particularly the texture zeroes which provide important relations among the mass eigenvalues and the mixing matrix.
The leptogenesis is studied in the neutrino textures with two zeros, which reduce the number of independent phases of the CP violation. The phenomenological favored neutrino textures with two zeros are decomposed into the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana one in the see-saw mechanism. Putting the condition to suppress the $μ\to eγ$ decay enough, the texture zeros of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are fixed in the framework of the MSSM with right-handed neutrinos. These textures have only one CP violatig phase. The magnitude of each entry of the Dirac mass matrix is deter…
A three-parameter model of neutrino oscillations based on a simple Lorentz- and CPT-violating texture is presented. The model is consistent with established data and naturally generates low-energy and neutrino-antineutrino anomalies of the MiniBooNE type. A one-parameter extension incorporates the MINOS anomaly, while a simple texture enhancement accommodates the LSND signal.
We study the possibility of texture zeros in Majorana light neutrino mass matrix in the light of dark large mixing angle (DLMA) solution to solar neutrino problem where solar mixing angle ($\sin^2{θ_{12}}\simeq 0.7 $) lies in the second octant instead of first octant in standard large mixing angle (LMA) scenario ($\sin^2{θ_{12}}\simeq 0.3 $). In three neutrino scenario, we find that LMA and DLMA solutions lead to different set of allowed and disallowed textures with one and two zeros. While being consistent with existing bounds from neutrino oscillation data, neutrinoless double beta decay and…
We propose and study a common hierarchical mass texture for both charged lepton and neutrino sectors. The texture gives rise to a large $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_τ$ mixing. Also it leads to the small angle MSW effect solution for solar neutrino data. It naturally gives a small $ν_e\leftrightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation relevant to the CHOOZ result in certain mass limits.
We show a matrix decomposition of flavor mass matrix for Dirac neutrinos $M$ by sum as $M=M'+M^0$ where $M'$ obeys the feature of the magic square and $M^0$ is three-zero texture. The favorable three-zero textures in the context of magic square are explored. It turned out that so-called the normal ordering of neutrino masses is favored over the inverted ordering in the context of magic square.
We studied the phenomenological implications of texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix of the minimal left-right symmetric model (LRSM). Since the possibility of maximum zeros reduces the maximum number of free parameters of the model making it more predictive, we considered only those cases with maximum possible texture zeros in light neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$, Dirac neutrino mass matrix $M_D$ and heavy right-handed (RH) neutrino mass matrix $M_{RR}$. We then computed the correlations among the different light neutrino parameters and then the new physics contributions to neutrinoless doub…
We investigate the CP asymmetry for a hybrid texture of the neutrino mass matrix predicted by $Q_8$ family symmetry in the context of the type-I seesaw mechanism and examine its consequences for leptogenesis. We, also, calculate the resulting Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) for this texture.
We review previous work on neutrino mass textures in gauge theories. Such textures may arise as a result of flavour symmetries. In a given theory, it is possible to give a classification of heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrices, assuming the Dirac masses of the neutrinos to be of the same form as the ones of the up-quarks. Heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrices leading to large neutrino mixing, are tabulated as an example. Such solutions are now of interest, in the light of the Super-Kamiokande data.
We present a comprehensive phenomenological analysis of the allowed hybrid textures of neutrinos. Out of a total of sixty hybrid textures with one equality between the elements of neutrino mass matrix and one texture zero only twenty three are found to be viable at 99% C.L. whereas the earlier analysis found fifty four to be viable. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed hybrid textures including Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase, $δ$. We, also, obtain lower bound on effective Majorana mass for all the allowed hybrid text…
We demonstrate the usefulness of flavour neutrino masses expressed in terms of $M_{ee},M_{eμ}$ and $M_{eτ}$. The analytical expressions for the flavour neutrino masses, mass eigenstates and physical CP-violating Majorana phases for texture two zeros are obtained exactly.
We propose a simple texture for the right-handed Majorana mass matrix to give a large $ν_μ-ν_τ$ mixing angle and hierarchical left-handed neutrino mass pattern. Consistently with the Dirac mass texture of the quark sector realizing the CKM mixing, this naturally explains the recent experimental results on both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly observed by the Superkamiokande collaboration and the solar neutrino problem. In this texture the right-handed Majorana mass of the third generation is of the order of GUT scale, which is favorable for reproducing the observed bottom-tau mass ratio.
We stress that specific texture zeros of lepton mass matrices, which might dynamically arise from a new kind of flavor symmetry, can help us to establish simple and testable relations between the lepton flavor mixing parameters and lepton mass ratios. We present a brief review of one-zero, two-zero and three-zero textures of the neutrino mass matrix. Their phenomenological consequences on neutrino mixing and CP violation are also discussed.
As a consequence of the LSND anomaly and other hints of an eV scale sterile neutrino from particle physics and cosmology, the neutrino sector of the standard model of particle physics has to be extended and the smallest extension is the (3+1) model, i.e. three active neutrinos plus one sterile one. In this work we study the neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ with three texture zeros in the (3+1) model, assuming all the neutrino states are of Majorana type. With the mass hierarchy between the active and sterile neutrinos as well as the smallness of the reactor neutrino mixing and active-sterile mixing,…
We review recent work on the interplay between broken family symmetries which give rise to approximate texture zeros in the mass matrices of the quarks and leptons and the presence of certain hierarchy patterns in the spectrum of massive neutrinos.
The Tri-Bimaximal (TBM) mixing predicts a vanishing $θ_{13}$. This can be attributed to the inherited $μ-τ$ symmetry of TBM mixing. We break its $μ-τ$ symmetry by adding a complex magic matrix with one variable to TBM neutrino mass matrix with one vanishing eigenvalue. We present two such textures and study their phenomenological implications.
Considering Dirac neutrinos and Fritzsch-like texture 6 zero and 5 zero mass matrices, detailed predictions for cases pertaining to normal/inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenario of neutrino masses have been carried out. All the cases considered here pertaining to inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data. For the normal hierarchy cases, the lower limit of m_nu_1 and of s_13 as well as the range of Dirac-like CP violating phase delta_l would have implications for the texture specific cases considered here.
We consider a texture for the neutrino mass matrix characterized by one vanishing $2\times2$ subtrace. We analyze phenomenologically and analytically all the six possible patterns, and show that all non-singular ones are able to accommodate the experimental bounds, whereas singular patterns allow only for four inverted-hierarchy type textures. We then present some possible realizations of this texture, within seesaw scenarios, either directly or indirectly by relating it to zero-textures.
We study neutrino mass matrices with one texture equality and the neutrino mixing matrix having either its first (TM$_1$) or second (TM$_2$) column identical to that of the tribimaximal mixing matrix. We found that out of total fifteen possible neutrino mass matrices with one texture equality, only seven textures are compatible with $TM_1$ mixing and six textures are compatible with $TM_2$ mixing in the light of the current neutrino oscillation data. These textures have interesting implications for the presently unknown parameters such as the neutrino mass scale, effective Majorana neutrino ma…
In this paper, we derive in a novel approach the possible textures of neutrino mass matrix that can lead to maximal atmospherical mixing angle ($θ^{}_{23} = π/4$) and Dirac CP phase ($δ= - π/2$) in two phenomenologically appealing scenarios: (1) one neutrino mass matrix element being vanishing (2) one neutrino mass being vanishing. For the obtained textures, some neutrino mass sum rules which relate the neutrino masses and mixing parameters will emerge. With the help of these sum rules, the unknown absolute neutrino mass scale and Majorana CP phases can be determined. Some discussions about th…
In this work we revisit the zero textures in low energy Majorana neutrino mass matrix when the active neutrino sector is extended by a light sterile neutrino in the eV scale i.e., the 3+1 scheme. In 3+1 scenario, the low energy neutrino mass matrix ($m_ν$) has ten independent elements. Thus in principle one can have minimum one-zero texture to maximum ten-zero texture. We summarize the previous results of one, two, three and four-zero textures which already exist in the literature and present our new results on five-zero textures. In our analysis we find that among six possible five-zero textu…
A four-neutrino effective texture is described, where a sterile neutrino mixes nearly maximally with the electron neutrino and so, is responsible for the deficit of solar $ν_e $'s (according to the large-angle MSW solution or vacuum solution, of which the former is selected a posteriori). But, while maximal mixing of muon neutrino with tauon neutrino causes the deficit of atmospheric $ν_μ$'s, the original magnitude of LSND effect is reduced by as much as four orders, becoming unobservable.
We study all possible texture zeros in the Majorana neutrino mass matrix which are allowed from neutrino oscillation as well as cosmology data when the charged lepton mass matrix is assumed to take the diagonal form. In case of one-zero texture, we write down the Majorana phases which are assumed to be equal and the lightest neutrino mass as a function of the Dirac CP phase. In case of two-zero texture, we numerically evaluate all the three CP phases and lightest neutrino mass by solving four real constraint equations. We then constrain texture zero mass matrices from the requirement of produc…
In an attempt at explaining the observed neutrino mass-squared differences and leptonic mixing, lepton mass matrices with zero textures have been widely studied. In the weak basis where the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal, various neutrino mass matrices with two zeros have been shown to be consistent with the current experimental data. Using the canonical and Smith normal form methods, we construct the minimal Abelian symmetry realizations of these phenomenological two-zero neutrino textures. The implementation of these symmetries in the context of the seesaw mechanism for Majorana neut…
We study the possibility of probing different texture zero neutrino mass matrices at long baseline neutrino experiment DUNE. Assuming a diagonal charged lepton basis and Majorana nature of light neutrinos, we first classify the possible light neutrino mass matrices with one and two texture zeros and then numerically evaluate the parameter space in terms of atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and Dirac CP phase $δ_{\text{CP}}$ which satisfies the texture zero conditions. We then feed these parameter values into the numerical analysis in order to study the sensitivity of DUNE experiment to them. W…
We show that the neutrino mass matrix with the minimal texture leads to the neutrino mass and mixing that are empirically determined, including $θ_{13}$ that is measured recently at a high precision. This mass matrix, where the Majorana nature of the neutrino is essential, only allows the normal hierarchy of the neutrino mass, excluding either inverse mass hierarchy or degenerate mass neutrinos, and hence predicts the effective mass of double beta decay to lie within the range $m_{ee}=3.7-5.6$ eV.
In this paper, we carry out a numerical and systematic analysis of the neutrino mass textures, which contain one vanishing minor and an equality between two cofactors. Among 60 logically possible textures, only eight of them are excluded for both normal and inverted hierarchy by the current experimental data at 3σlevel. We also demonstrate that the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, especially for the measurement of θ23 mixing angle, will play the important role in the model selection. The phenomenological implications from neutrinoless double beta decay and the cosmology o…
Systematic analyses of the textures arising in lepton mass matrices have been carried out using unitary transformations and condition of naturalness for the Dirac and Majorana neutrino possibilities. It is observed that the recent three neutrino oscillation data together with the effective mass in neutrinoless double beta decay provide vital clues in predicting the general structures of these lepton mass matrices.
In view of recent neutrino experimental results such as SNO, Super-Kamiokande (SK), CHOOZ and neutrinoless double beta decay $(ββ_{0ν})$, we consider a texture of neutrino mass matrix which contains three parameters in order to explain those neutrino experimental results. We have first fitted parameters in a model independent way with solar and atmospheric neutrino mass squared differences and solar neutrino mixing angle which satisfy LMA solution. The maximal value of atmospheric neutrino mixing angle comes out naturally in the present texture. Most interestingly, fitted parameters of the neu…
The model of neutrino mass matrix with minimal texture is now tightly constrained by experiment so that it can yield a prediction for the phase of CP violation. This phase is predicted to lie in the range $δ_{CP}=0.77π- 1.24π$. If neutrino oscillation experiment would find the CP violation phase outside this range, this means that the minimal-texture neutrino mass matrix, the element of which is all real, fails and the neutrino mass matrix must be complex, i.e., the phase must be present that is responsible for leptogenesis.
In the light of the recent measurement of the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$, implications of the latest mixing data have been investigated for non-minimal textures of lepton mass matrices pertaining to Dirac neutrinos. All these texture specific lepton mass matrices have been examined for their compatibility with the latest data in the cases of normal hierarchy, inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses. The implications of all the three lepton mixing angles have been investigated on the lightest neutrino mass as well as the Jarlskog's CP violating parameter in the leptoni…
We study the see-saw realization of seven textures of the neutrino mass matrix, which were presented by Frampton, Glashow and Marfatia. Two of them B_1 and B_2 are not realized in the see-saw mechanism without fine-tuning of parameters. We present some specific textures of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana neutrino one. In order to test these textures, we discuss the effect on the branching ratio of mu --> e gamma. We also study the U(1)_X times U(1)_{X'} flavor symmetry, in which U(1)_X is anomalous and U(1)_{X'} is non-anomolous, to reproduce texture zeros. We pres…
In this paper we analyze the compatibility of two-zero neutrino Majorana textures with the recent experimental data. Differently from previous works, we use the experimental data to fix the values of the non-vanishing mass matrix entries and study in detail the correlations and degree of fine-tuning among them, which is also a measure of how naturally a given texture is able to describe all neutrino data. This information is then used to expand the textures in powers of the Cabibbo angle; extracting random O(1) coefficients, we show that only in few cases such textures reproduce the mixing par…
The recent enormous improvement of our knowledge of the neutrino oscillation parameters has motivated us to reinvestigate the allowed ranges of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix in the basis where the charged-lepton mass mass matrix is diagonal. Moreover, we have studied the correlations of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix. The result of this analysis is useful for finding textures in the neutrino mass matrix and, therefore, for model building in the lepton sector. As an example, we present two textures of the neutrino mass matrix which have only two parameters and fit very well…
