In this paper, we give an overview on optimality conditions and exact penalization for the mathematical program with switching constraints (MPSC). MPSC is a new class of optimization problems which has some important applications. It is well-known that if MPSC is treated as a standard nonlinear program, some of the usual constraint qualifications may fail and to deal with this issue one could reformulate it as a mathematical program with disjunctive constraints (MPDC). In this paper we first survey recent results on constraint qualifications and optimality conditions for MPDC and then apply them to MPSC to obtain the corresponding constraint qualifications and optimality conditions. Moreover we provide two types of sufficient conditions for the local error bound and exact penalty results for MPSC. One comes from the directional quasi-normality for MPDC and the other is obtained by using the local decomposition approach.
A convex penalty for promoting switching controls for partial differential equations is introduced; such controls consist of an arbitrary number of components of which at most one should be simultaneously active. Using a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a family of approximating problems is obtained that is amenable to solution by a semismooth Newton method. The efficiency of this approach and the structure of the obtained controls are demonstrated by numerical examples.
We investigate non-convex optimization problems in $BV(Ω)$ with two-sided pointwise inequality constraints. We propose a regularization and penalization method to numerically solve the problem. Under certain conditions, weak limit points of iterates are stationary for the original problem. In addition, we prove optimality conditions for the original problem that contain Lagrange multipliers to the inequality constraints. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical findings.
We present a novel penalty approach for a class of quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) involving monotone systems and interconnected obstacles. We show that for any given positive switching cost, the solutions of the penalized equations converge monotonically to those of the QVIs. We estimate the penalization errors and are able to deduce that the optimal switching regions are constructed exactly. We further demonstrate that as the switching cost tends to zero, the QVI degenerates into an equation of HJB type, which is approximated by the penalized equation at the same order (up to a log fac…
Optimal control problems involving hybrid binary-continuous control costs are challenging due to their lack of convexity and weak lower semicontinuity. Replacing such costs with their convex relaxation leads to a primal-dual optimality system that allows an explicit pointwise characterization and whose Moreau-Yosida regularization is amenable to a semismooth Newton method in function space. This approach is especially suited for computing switching controls for partial differential equations. In this case, the optimality gap between the original functional and its relaxation can be estimated a…
This paper considers the problem of minimizing the time average of a stochastic process subject to time average constraints on other processes. A canonical example is minimizing average power in a data network subject to multi-user throughput constraints. Another example is a (static) convex program. Under a Slater condition, the drift-plus-penalty algorithm is known to provide an $O(ε)$ approximation to optimality with a convergence time of $O(1/ε^2)$. This paper proves the same result with a simpler technique and in a more general context that does not require the Slater condition. This pape…

We consider mixed-integer optimal control problems with combinatorial constraints that couple over time such as minimum dwell times. We analyze a lifting and decomposition approach into a mixed-integer optimal control problem without combinatorial constraints and a mixed-integer problem for the combinatorial constraints in the control space. Both problems can be solved very efficiently with existing methods such as outer convexification with sum-up-rounding strategies and mixed-integer linear programming techniques. The coupling is handled using a penalty-approach. We provide an exactness resu…
Approximate necessary optimality conditions in terms of Fréchet subgradients and normals for a rather general optimization problem with a potentially non-Lipschitzian objective function are established with the aid of Ekeland's variational principle, the fuzzy Fréchet subdifferential sum rule, and a novel notion of lower semicontinuity relative to a set-valued mapping or set. Feasible points satisfying these optimality conditions are referred to as approximately stationary. As applications, we derive a new general version of the extremal principle. Furthermore, we study approximate stationarit…
Optimization with nonnegative orthogonality constraints has wide applications in machine learning and data sciences. It is NP-hard due to some combinatorial properties of the constraints. We first propose an equivalent optimization formulation with nonnegative and multiple spherical constraints and an additional single nonlinear constraint. Various constraint qualifications, the first- and second-order optimality conditions of the equivalent formulation are discussed. By establishing a local error bound of the feasible set, we design a class of (smooth) exact penalty models via keeping the non…
The case of time minimization for affine control systems with control on the disk is studied. After recalling the standard sufficient conditions for local optimality in the smooth case, the analysis focusses on the specific type of singularities encountered when the control is prescribed to the disk. Using a suitable stratification, the regularity of the flow is analyzed, which helps to devise verifiable sufficient conditions in terms of left and right limits of Jacobi fields at a switching point. Under the appropriate assumptions, piecewise regularity of the field of extremals is obtained.

We present two matrix-free methods for approximately solving exact penalty subproblems that arise when solving large-scale optimization problems. The first approach is a novel iterative re-weighting algorithm (IRWA), which iteratively minimizes quadratic models of relaxed subproblems while automatically updating a relaxation vector. The second approach is based on alternating direction augmented Lagrangian (ADAL) technology applied to our setting. The main computational costs of each algorithm are the repeated minimizations of convex quadratic functions which can be performed matrix-free. We p…
We present a unified study of first and second order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for minimax and Chebyshev optimisation problems with cone constraints. First order optimality conditions for such problems can be formulated in several different forms: in terms of a linearised problem, in terms of Lagrange multipliers (KKT-points), in terms of subdifferentials and normal cones, in terms of a nonsmooth penalty function, in terms of cadres with positive cadre multipliers, and in an alternance form. We describe interconnections between all these forms of necessary and sufficient o…
Hypergraph matching is a fundamental problem in computer vision. Mathematically speaking, it maximizes a polynomial objective function, subject to assignment constraints. In this paper, we reformulate the hypergraph matching problem as a sparse constrained tensor optimization problem. The optimality conditions are characterized based on the sparse constrained optimization theory. By dropping the sparsity constraint, we show that the resulting relaxation problem can recover the global minimizer of the original problem. The critical step in solving the original problem is to identify the locatio…
Mathematical programs with disjunctive constraints (MPDCs for short) cover several different problem classes from nonlinear optimization including complementarity-, vanishing-, cardinality-, and switching-constrained optimization problems. In this paper, we introduce an abstract but reasonable version of the prominent linear independence constraint qualification which applies to MPDCs. Afterwards, we derive first- and second-order optimality conditions for MPDCs under validity of this constraint qualification based on so-called strongly stationary points. Finally, we apply our findings to some…
This paper considers the problem of minimizing the time average of a controlled stochastic process subject to multiple time average constraints on other related processes. The probability distribution of the random events in the system is unknown to the controller. A typical application is time average power minimization subject to network throughput constraints for different users in a network with time varying channel conditions. We show that with probability at least $1-2δ$, the classical drift-plus-penalty algorithm provides a sample path $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ approximation to optimal…
In this article we propose a new approach to an analysis of DC optimization problems. This approach was largely inspired by codifferential calculus and the method of codifferential descent and is based on the use of a so-called affine support set of a convex function instead of the Frenchel conjugate function. With the use of affine support sets we define a global codifferential mapping of a DC function and derive new necessary and sufficient global optimality conditions for DC optimization problems. We also provide new simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the global exactness of the…
Transforming into an exact penalty function model with convex compact constraints yields efficient infeasible approaches for optimization problems with orthogonality constraints. For smooth and $\ell_{2,1}$-norm regularized cases, these infeasible approaches adopt simple and orthonormalization-free updating scheme and show their high efficiency in the test examples. However, to avoid orthonormalization while enforcing the feasibility of the final solution, these infeasible approaches introduce a quadratic penalty term, where an inappropriate penalty parameter can lead to numerical inefficiency…
This paper is concerned with optimal control problems for parabolic partial differential equations with pointwise in time switching constraints on the control. A standard approach to treat constraints in nonlinear optimization is penalization, in particular using $L^1$-type norms. Applying this approach to the switching constraint leads to a nonsmooth and nonconvex infinite-dimensional minimization problem which is challenging both analytically and numerically. Adding $H^1$ regularization or restricting to a finite-dimensional control space allows showing existence of optimal controls. First-o…
Second-order necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear conic programming problems that depend on a single Lagrange multiplier are usually built under nondegeneracy and strict complementarity. In this paper we establish a condition of such type for two classes of nonlinear conic problems, namely semidefinite and second-order cone programming, assuming Robinson's constraint qualification and a weak constant rank-type property which are, together, strictly weaker than nondegeneracy. Our approach is done via a penalty-based strategy, which is aimed at providing strong global convergence result…
This paper studies the bailout optimal dividend problem with regime switching under the constraint that dividend payments can be made only at the arrival times of an independent Poisson process while capital can be injected continuously in time. We show the optimality of the regime-modulated Parisian-classical reflection strategy when the underlying risk model follows a general spectrally negative Markov additive process. In order to verify the optimality, first we study an auxiliary problem driven by a single spectrally negative \lev process with a final payoff at an exponential terminal time…
This paper studies a 2-class, 2-server parallel server system under the recently introduced extended heavy traffic condition, which states that the underlying 'static allocation' linear program (LP) is critical, but does not require that it has a unique solution. The main result is the construction of policies that asymptotically achieve a lower bound, proved in [1], on an expected discounted linear combination of diffusion-scaled queue lengths, and are therefore asymptotically optimal (AO). Each extreme point solution to the LP determines a control mode, i.e., a set of activities (class--serv…

We consider a continuous-time positive bilinear control system (PBCS), i.e. a bilinear control system with Metzler matrices. The positive orthant is an invariant set of such a system, and the corresponding transition matrix C(t) is entrywise nonnegative for all time t>0. Motivated by the stability analysis of positive linear switched systems (PLSSs) under arbitrary switching laws, we fix a final time T>0 and define a control as optimal if it maximizes the spectral radius of C(T). A recent paper developed a first-order necessary condition for optimality in the form of a maximum principle (MP). …
In leader-follower multi-agent networks with switching topologies, choosing a subset of agents as leaders is a critical step to achieve desired performances. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of selecting a minimum-size set of leaders that ensure the tracking of a reference signal in a highorder linear multi-agent network with a set of given topology dependent dwell time (TDDT). First, we derive a sufficient condition that guarantees the states of all agents converging to an expected state trajectory. Second, by exploiting submodular optimization method, we formulate the problem of …

We consider an optimal control problem for the steady-state Kirchhoff equation, a prototype for nonlocal partial differential equations, different from fractional powers of closed operators. Existence and uniqueness of solutions of the state equation, existence of global optimal solutions, differentiability of the control-to-state map and first-order necessary optimality conditions are established. The aforementioned results require the controls to be functions in $H^1$ and subject to pointwise upper and lower bounds. In order to obtain the Newton differentiability of the optimality conditions…
