To understand the vibrational and configurational entropy effects for the stability of core-shell and solid-solution bimetallic nanoparticles, we theoretically investigated the excess energy of PdPt nanoparticles, adopting the (PdPt)201 model of ca. 2 nm by using the density functional method. The vibrational energy and entropy terms contributed to the total energy of both core-shell and solid-solution nanoparticles. The configurational entropy term was defined only for the solid-solution nanoparticles. Although the absolute values of vibrational energy and entropy terms were much larger than that of configurational entropy term, their contributions were limited in the form of excess free energy due to the small difference between different atomic configurations. The large contribution of configurational entropy term to the excess free energy was clearly confirmed from our first-principles calculations. To estimate the stability of core-shell and solid-solution metal nanoparticles based on the excess energy, the configurational entropy term was the dominant factor.
Bimetallic nanoalloys such as nanoparticles and nanowires are attracting significant attention due to their vast potential applications such as in catalysis and nanoelectronics. Notably, Pd-Pt nanoparticles/nanowires are being widely recognized as catalysts and hydrogen sensors. Compared to unary systems, alloys present more structural complexity with various compositional configurations. Therefore, it is important to understand energetically preferred atomic structures of bimetallic nanoalloys. In this study, we performed a series of simulated annealing Monte Carlo simulations to predict the …
At the nanometric scale, the synthesis of a random alloy (i.e. without phase segregation, whatever the composition) by chemical synthesis remains a not easy task, even for simple binary type systems. In this context, a unique approach based on the colloidal route is proposed enabling the synthesis of face-centred cubic and monodisperse bimetallic, trimetallic, tetrametallic and pentametallic nanoparticles with diameters around 5 nm as solid solutions. The Fe-Co-Ni-Pt-Ru alloy and its subsets are considered which is a challenging task as each element has fairly different physico-chemical proper…
Pt-based bimetallic nanoparticles have attracted significant attention as a promising replacement for expensive Pt nanoparticles. In the systematic design of bimetallic nanoparticles, it is important to understand their preferred atomic structures. However, compared with unary systems, alloy nanoparticles present more structural complexity with various compositional configurations, such as mixed-alloy, core-shell, and multishell structures. In this paper, we developed a unified empirical potential model for various Pt-based binary alloys, such as Pd-Pt, Cu-Pt, Au-Pt, and Ag-Pt. Within this fra…
Bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles enable tuning of the optical response and chemical stability by variation of the composition. The present numerical simulation study compares Ag-Au alloy, Ag@Au core-shell, and Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles of both spherical and anisotropic (nanotriangle and nanorods) shapes. By studying both spherical and anisotropic (with LSPR in the near-infrared region) shapes, cases with and without interband transitions of Au can be decoupled. Explicit comparisons are facilitated by numerical models supported by careful validation and examination o…
An embedded-domain phase-field formalism is used for studying phase transformation pathways in bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs). Competition of bulk and surface-directed spinodal decomposition processes and their interplay with capillarity are identified as the main determinants of BNP morphology. The former is characterized by an effective bulk driving force $Δ\tilde{f}$ which increases with decreasing temperature, while the latter manifests itself through a balance of interfacial energies captured by the contact angle $θ$. The simulated morphologies, namely, core-shell, Janus and inverse core…
Photoresponse of bimetallic Au-Ag nanoparticle embedded soda glass (Au-Ag@SG) substrate is reported for surface plasmon assisted optical switching using 808 nm excitation. Au-Ag@SG system is made by an ion beam technique where Ag^+ is introduced first in the soda glass matrix by ion exchange technique. Subsequently 400 keV Au^+ is implanted in the sample for different fluences which is followed by an ion beam annealing process using 1 MeV Si^+ at a fixed fluence of 2E16 ions.cm^{-2}. Characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks around 400 and 550 nm provided evidence for the presence o…
We study theoretically spectrum of radial vibrational modes in composite metal nanostructures such as bimetallic core-shell particles and metal nanoshells with dielectric core in an environment. We calculate frequencies and damping rates of fundamental (breathing) modes for these nanostructures along with those of two higher-order modes. For metal nanoshells, we find that the breathing mode frequency is always lower than the one for solid particles of the same size, while the damping is higher and increases with reduction of the shell thickness. We identify two regimes that can be characterize…

By means of density functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) we present a structural, electronic and magnetic study of FePt, CoPt, FeAu and FePd based L1$_0$ ordered cuboctahedral nanoparticles, with total numbers of atoms, N$_{tot}$ = 13, 55, 147. After a conjugate gradient relaxation, the nanoparticles retain their L1$_0$ symmetry, but the small displacements of the atomic positions tune the electronic and magnetic properties. The value of the total magnetic moment stabilizes as the size increases. We also show that the Magnetic Anisotropy Energy (MAE) depends…
Bimetallic catalysts can undergo segregation or redistribution of the metals driven by oxidizing and reducing environments. Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) was used to relate displacement fields to compositional distributions in crystalline Pt-Rh alloy nanoparticles. 3D images of internal composition showed that the radial distribution of compositions reverses partially between the surface shell and the core when gas flow changes between O2 and H2. Our observation suggests that the elemental segregation of nanoparticle catalysts should be highly active during heterogeneous catalysis …
Bimetallic nanoparticles are widely studied, for example in catalysis. However, possible restructuring in the environment of use, such as segregation or alloying, may occur. Taken individually, state-of-the-art analytical tools fail to give an overall picture of these transformations. This study combines an ensemble analysis (near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) with a local analysis (environmental transmission electron microscopy) to provide an in situ description of the restructuring of core--shell nickel-cobalt nanoparticles exposed to cycles of reduction and oxidation. I…
Bimetallic nanoparticles are often superior candidates for a wide range of technological and biomedical applications, thanks to their enhanced catalytic, optical, and magnetic properties, which are often better than their monometallic counterparts. Most of their properties strongly depend on their chemical composition, crystallographic structure, and phase distribution. However, little is known of how their crystal structure, on the nanoscale, transforms over time at elevated temperatures, even though this knowledge is highly relevant in case nanoparticles are used in, e.g., high-temperature c…

As renewable energy is becoming a critical energy source to meet the global demand, electrochemical energy storage devices become indispensable for the efficient energy storage and reliable supply. The electrode material is the key factor determining the energy storage capacity and the power delivery of the devices. Carbon-based materials are emerging as a viable candidate for electrodes, yet their low energy densities impede the development of advanced energy storage materials. Nanoparticle decoration of the carbon structures is one of the most promising and easy-to-implement a strategy to en…
We report results of a systematic study of structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of 34-atom bimetallic nanoparticles from the AgnCu34-n family using model interaction potentials as derived from the embedded atom method and in the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics. Systematic trends in the bond length and dynamical properties can be explained largely on arguments based on local coordination and elemental environment. Thus increase in the number of silver atoms in a given neighborhood introduces a monotonic increase in bond length while increase of the copper content do…
