The Boolean logic of subsets, usually presented as `propositional logic,' is considered as being "classical" while intuitionistic logic and the many sublogics and off-shoots are "non-classical." But there is another mathematical logic, the logic of partitions, that is at the same mathmatical level as Boolean subset logic since subsets and quotient sets (partitions or equivalence relations) are dual to one another in the category-theoretic sense. Our purpose here is to explore the notions of negation and implication in that other mathematical logic of partitions.
The general aim of this article is to study the negation fragment of classical logic within the framework of contemporary (Abstract) Algebraic Logic. More precisely, we shall find the three classes of algebras that are canonically associated with a logic in Algebraic Logic, that is, we find the classes $\mathrm{Alg}^*$, $\mathrm{Alg}$ and the intrinsic variety of the negation fragment of classical logic. In order to achieve this, firstly we propose a Hilbert-style axiomatization for this fragment. Then, we characterize the reduced matrix models and the full generalized matrix models of this lo…
The definition of negation has to be referred to the totality of a theory and at last to what is defined as the organization of a scientific theory; in other words, the definition of negation is of a structural kind, rather than of an objective kind or a subjective kind. The paper starts by remarking that the ancient Greek word for truth was aletheia, which is a double negation, i.e. unveiling. Not before the 1968 the double negation law was re-evaluated, since it was recognized that its failure represents more appropriately than the failure of of excluded middle law the borderline between cla…
In this paper, a short survey about the concepts underlying general logics is given. In particular, a novel rigorous definition of a fuzzy negation as an operation acting on a lattice to render it into a fuzzy logic is presented. According to this definition, a fuzzy negation satisfies the weak double negation condition, requiring double negation to be expansive, the antitony condition, being equivalent to the disjunctive De Morgan law and thus warranting compatibility of negation with the lattice operations, and the Boolean boundary condition stating that the universal bounds of the lattice a…
Proof-theoretic methods are developed for subsystems of Johansson's logic obtained by extending the positive fragment of intuitionistic logic with weak negations. These methods are exploited to establish properties of the logical systems. In particular, cut-free complete sequent calculi are introduced and used to provide a proof of the fact that the systems satisfy the Craig interpolation property. Alternative versions of the calculi are later obtained by means of an appropriate loop-checking history mechanism. Termination of the new calculi is proved, and used to conclude that the considered …
The article is a study of two algebraic structures, the `contrapositionally complemented pseudo-Boolean algebra' (ccpBa) and `contrapositionally $\vee$ complemented pseudo-Boolean algebra' (c$\vee$cpBa). The algebras have recently been obtained from a topos-theoretic study of categories of rough sets. The salient feature of these algebras is that there are two negations, one intuitionistic and another minimal in nature, along with a condition connecting the two operators. We study properties of these algebras, give examples, and compare them with relevant existing algebras. `Intuitionistic Log…
We study propositional logical systems arising from the language of Johansson's minimal logic and obtained by weakening the requirements for the negation operator. We present their semantics as a variant of neighbourhood semantics. We use duality and completeness results to show that there are uncountably many subminimal logics. We also give model-theoretic and algebraic definitions of filtration for minimal logic and show that they are dual to each other. These constructions ensure that the propositional minimal logic has the finite model property. Finally, we define and investigate bi-modal …
In this paper, we axiomatize the negatable consequences in dependence and independence logic by extending the systems of natural deduction of the logics given in (Kontinen and Vaananen 2013) and (Hannula 2015). We prove a characterization theorem for negatable formulas in independence logic and negatable sentences in dependence logic, and identify an interesting class of formulas that are negatable in independence logic. Dependence and independence atoms, first-order formulas belong to this class. We also demonstrate our extended system of independence logic by giving explicit derivations for …
It is well-known that intuitionistic logics can be formalized by means of Brouwerian semilattices, i.e. relatively pseudocomplemented semilattices. Then the logical connective implication is considered to be the relative pseudocomplement and conjunction is the semilattice operation meet. If the Brouwerian semilattice has a bottom element 0 then the relative pseudocomplement with respect to 0 is called the pseudocomplement and it is considered as the connective negation in this logic. Our idea is to consider an arbitrary meet-semilattice with 0 satisfying only the Ascending Chain Condition, whi…
A structural theorem for Kleene algebras is proved, showing that an element of a Kleene algebra can be looked upon as an ordered pair of sets. Further, we show that negation with the Kleene property (called the `Kleene negation') always arises from the set theoretic complement. The corresponding propositional logic is then studied through a 3-valued and rough set semantics. It is also established that Kleene negation can be considered as a modal operator, and enables giving a perp semantics to the logic. One concludes with the observation that all the semantics for this logic are equivalent.
Belnap-Dunn's relevance logic, BD, was designed seeking a suitable logical device for dealing with multiple information sources which sometimes may provide inconsistent and/or incomplete pieces of information. BD is a four-valued logic which is both paraconsistent and paracomplete. On the other hand, De and Omori while investigating what classical negation amounts to in a paracomplete and paraconsistent four-valued setting, proposed the expansion BD2 of the four valued Belnap-Dunn logic by a classical negation. In this paper, we reintroduce the logic BD2 by means of a primitive weak consistenc…
We propose an extension of minimal intuitionistic predicate logic, based on delimited control operators, that can derive the predicate-logic version of the Double-negation Shift schema, while preserving the disjunction and existence properties.
Proof-theoretic semantics (P-tS) is the paradigm of semantics in which meaning in logic is based on proof (as opposed to truth). A particular instance of P-tS for intuitionistic propositional logic (IPL) is its base-extension semantics (B-eS). This semantics is given by a relation called support, explaining the meaning of the logical constants, which is parameterized by systems of rules called bases that provide the semantics of atomic propositions. In this paper, we interpret bases as collections of definite formulae and use the operational view of the latter as provided by uniform proof-sear…
This paper focuses on order-preserving logics defined from varieties of distributive lattices with negation, and in particular on the problem of whether these can be axiomatized by means of finite Hilbert calculi. On the side of negative results, we provide a syntactic condition on the equational presentation of a variety that entails failure of finite axiomatizability for the corresponding logic. An application of this result is that the logic of all distributive lattices with negation is not finitely axiomatizable; likewise, we establish that the order-preserving logic of the variety of all …
Cumulative logics are studied in an abstract setting, i.e., without connectives, very much in the spirit of Makinson's early work. A powerful representation theorem characterizes those logics by choice functions that satisfy a weakening of Sen's property alpha, in the spirit of the author's "Nonmonotonic Logics and Semantics" (JLC). The representation results obtained are surprisingly smooth: in the completeness part the choice function may be defined on any set of worlds, not only definable sets and no definability-preservation property is required in the soundness part. For abstract cumulati…
We produce a decidable classical normal modal logic of internalised negation-complete and thus disjunctive non-monotonic interactive proofs (LDiiP) from an existing logical counterpart of non-monotonic or instant interactive proofs (LiiP). LDiiP internalises agent-centric proof theories that are negation-complete (maximal) and consistent (and hence strictly weaker than, for example, Peano Arithmetic) and enjoy the disjunction property (like Intuitionistic Logic). In other words, internalised proof theories are ultrafilters and all internalised proof goals are definite in the sense of being eit…
By a De Morgan algebra is meant a bounded poset equipped with an antitone involution considered as negation. Such an algebra can be considered as an algebraic axiomatization of a propositional logic satisfying the double negation law. Our aim is to introduce the so-called tense operators in every De Morgan algebra for to get an algebraic counterpart of a tense logic with negation satisfying the double negation law which need not be Boolean. Following the standard construction of tense operators $G$ and $H$ by a frame we solve the following question: if a dynamic De Morgan algebra is given, how…
In the context of fuzzy logic, ordinal sums provide a method for constructing new functions from existing functions, which can be triangular norms, triangular conorms, fuzzy negations, copulas, overlaps, uninorms, fuzzy implications, among others. As our main contribution, we establish conditions for the ordinal sum of a family of fuzzy negations to be a fuzzy negation of a specific class, such as strong, strict, continuous, invertible and frontier. Also, we relate the natural negation of the ordinal sum on families of t-norms, t-conorms and fuzzy implications with the ordinal sum of the natur…
Besides the better-known Nelson's Logic and Paraconsistent Nelson's Logic, in "Negation and separation of concepts in constructive systems" (1959), David Nelson introduced a logic called S with the aim of analyzing the constructive content of provable negation statements in mathematics. Motivated by results from Kleene, in "On the Interpretation of Intuitionistic Number Theory" (1945), Nelson investigated a more symmetric recursive definition of truth, according to which a formula could be either primitively verified or refuted. The logic S was defined by means of a calculus lacking the contra…

In this paper, we introduce game-theoretic semantics (GTS) for Qualitative Choice Logic (QCL), which, in order to express preferences, extends classical propositional logic with an additional connective called ordered disjunction. Firstly, we demonstrate that game semantics can capture existing degree-based semantics for QCL in a natural way. Secondly, we show that game semantics can be leveraged to derive new semantics for the language of QCL. In particular, we present a new semantics that makes use of GTS negation and, by doing so, avoids problems with negation in existing QCL-semantics.
The present study shows how to enrich De Morgan algebras with a perfection operator that allows one to express the Boolean properties of negation-consistency and negation-determinedness. The variety of perfect paradefinite algebras thus obtained (PP-algebras) is shown to be term-equivalent to the variety of involutive Stone algebras, introduced by R. Cignoli and M. Sagastume, and more recently studied from a logical perspective by M. Figallo-L. Cantú and by S. Marcelino-U. Rivieccio. This equivalence plays an important role in the investigation of the 1-assertional logic and of the order-prese…
We propose a semantic representation of the standard quantum logic QL within a classical, normal modal logic, and this via a lattice-embedding of orthomodular lattices into Boolean algebras with one modal operator. Thus our classical logic is a completion of the quantum logic QL. In other words, we refute Birkhoff and von Neumann's classic thesis that the logic (the formal character) of Quantum Mechanics would be non-classical as well as Putnam's thesis that quantum logic (of his kind) would be the correct logic for propositional inference in general. The propositional logic of Quantum Mechani…
The multi-valued logic of Łukasiewicz is a substructural logic that has been widely studied and has many interesting properties. It is classical, in the sense that it admits the axiom schema of double negation, [DNE]. However, our understanding of Łukasiewicz logic can be improved by separating its classical and intuitionistic aspects. The intuitionistic aspect of Łukasiewicz logic is captured in an axiom schema, [CWC], which asserts the commutativity of a weak form of conjunction. This is equivalent to a very restricted form of contraction. We show how Łukasiewicz Logic can be viewed both as …
