In this paper we introduce, from basic principles, the main concepts of beam focusing and transport of space charge dominated beams in high brightness accelerators using the beam envelope equation as a convenient mathematical tool. Matching conditions suitable for preserving beam quality are derived from the model for significant beam dynamics regimes. The specific case of the plasma accelerator module is also addressed.
This paper gives an overview of the beam injection and extraction principles for accelerators. After a brief general introduction, it explains different methods of injecting the beam for hadron and lepton machines. It describes single- and multi-turn hadron injection, charge-exchange H- injection, then betatron and synchrotron injection for leptons. For extraction, it presents single- and multi-turn extraction, as well as resonant extraction methods. Finally, the requirements for linking several accelerators by a transfer line are presented.
The performance of high beam power accelerators is strongly dependent on appropriate injection, acceleration and extraction system designs as well as on the way interactions of the beam with machine components are handled. The experience of the previous ICFA High -Brightness Beam workshops has proven that it is quite beneficial to combine analyses and discussion of these issues in one group. A broad range of topics was presented and discussed at the Working Group C sessions at the HB2012 Workshop. Highlights from the talks, outstanding issues along with plans and proposals for future work are …
An accelerator has limited dynamic range: a chain of accelerators is required to reach high energy. A combination of septa and kicker magnets is frequently used to inject and extract beam from each stage. The kicker magnets typically produce rectangular field pulses with fast rise- and/or fall-times, however the field strength is relatively low. To compensate for their relatively low field strength, the kicker magnets are generally combined with electromagnetic septa. The septa provide relatively strong field strength but are either DC or slow pulsed. This paper discusses injection and extract…
In this lecture we introduce from basic principles the main concepts of beam focusing and transport in modern accelerators using the beam envelope equationas a convenient mathematical tool. Matching conditions suitable for preserving beam quality are derived from the model for significant beam dynamics regimes. An extension of the model to the case of plasma accelerators is introduced. The understanding of similarities and differences with respect to traditionalaccelerators is also emphasized.

The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron(RCS) of China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) employs painting injection to achieve uniform beam distribution and suppress space-charge effects. In the painting injection, the mismatch between the injection beam orbit and circulating orbit could make the non-uniformity of beam distribution and emittance growth, which may lead to beam loss. To match the injection beam orbit and the circulating beam orbit, it is necessary to identify the orbit of injection beam relative to the circulating orbit in the injection point. However, it's hard to measure this relative inje…
The extraction bucket position in the Fermilab Booster is controlled with a cogging process that involves the comparison of the Booster RF count and the Recycler Ring revolution marker. A one RF bucket jitter in the extraction bucket position results from the variability of the process that phase matches the Booster to the Recycler. However, the new slow phase lock process used to lock the frequency and phase of the Booster RF to the Recycler RF has been made digital and programmable and has been modified to correct the extraction notch position. The beam loss at the Recycler injection has bee…
Particle acceleration in a quasilinear plasma wake provides access to high acceleration gradients while avoiding self-trapping of the background electrons. However, the plasma response to the externally injected witness bunch leads to a variation of the focussing fields along the bunch length, which can lead to a emittance growth. In order to investigate the impact of this emittance growth on the overall beam quality, we develop a single figure of merit based on a potential high-energy application for the AWAKE experiment at CERN. We show that the development of such a figure of merit naturall…
We present theoretical and numerical studies of longitudinal compression and transverse matching of electron bunch before injecting into the Laser-plasma Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) foreseen at the ESCULAP project in ORSAY. Longitudinal compression is performed with a dogleg chicane, the chicane is designed based on theory of beam optics, beam dynamics in dogleg is studied with ImpactT and cross checked with CSRtrack, both 3D space charge (SC) and coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effects are included. Simulation results show that the energy chirp at the dogleg entrance should be smaller …
A new beam injection scheme is proposed for the Fermilab Booster to increase beam brightness. The beam is injected on the deceleration part of the sinusoidal magnetic ramp and capture is started immediately after the injection. During the entire capture process we impose Pdot=0 in a changing B field. Beam dynamics simulations clearly show that this method is very efficient with no longitudinal beam emittance dilution and no beam loss. As a consequence of preserved emittance, the required RF power on a typical Booster cycle can be reduced by ~30% as compared with the scheme in current operation…
Beam transfer, such as injection into or extraction from an accelerator, is one of the most critical moments in terms of machine protection in a high-intensity machine. Special equipment is used and machine protection aspects have to be taken into account in the design of the beam transfer concepts. A brief introduction of the principles of beam transfer and the equipment involved will be given in this lecture. The main concepts of machine protection for injection and extraction will be presented, with examples from the CERN SPS and LHC.
Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are used in the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) to monitor injection lattice matching by measuring turn-by-turn sigmas at injection and to measure transverse emittance of the beam during the acceleration cycle. The IPMs provide a periodic, non-destructive means of performing turn-by-turn emittance measurements where other techniques are not applicable. As Fermilab is refocusing its attention on the intensity frontier, non-intercepting diagnostics such as IPMs are expected to become even more important. This paper gives an overview of the operational use of IPMs f…
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) uses H- stripping and phase space painting method to fill large ring acceptance with the linac beam of small emittance. The dependence of the painting beam on the injection beam parameters was studied for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of CSNS. The injection processes for different momentum spread, rms emittance of the injection beam, injection beam matching were simulated, then the beam losses, 99% and rms emittances were obtained and the optimized ranges of injection beam parameters were given. The interaction between the H- beam and the stripp…
We describe an external electron injection scheme for the AWAKE experiment. We use scattering in two foils, that are necessary as vacuum window and laser beam dump, to decrease the betatron function of the incoming electron beam for injection and matching into plasma wakefields driven by a self-modulated proton bunch. We show that, for a total aluminum foil thickness of $\sim 280\, μ$m, multiple Coulomb scattering increases the beam emittance by a factor of $\sim 10$ and decreases the betatron function by a factor of $\sim 3$. The plasma in the accelerator is created by a ionizing laser pulse,…
Short bunch proton beams are of great significance for the applications of white neutron beams and muon beams. The accelerator complex of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) was designed to support the applications mainly based on neutron scattering techniques where the proton pulse length is not very sensitive. Some theoretical and experimental studies have been performed to see if one can extract a short-bunch proton beam by bunch rotation from the rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) at CSNS. The experimental results at RCS have evidently displayed the bunch lengthening and rotation process, …
Classical, isochronous, and synchro-cyclotrons are introduced. Transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics in these accelerators are covered. The problem of vertical focusing and iscochronism in compact isochronous cyclotrons is treated in some detail. Different methods for isochronization of the cyclotron magnetic field are discussed. The limits of the classical cyclotron are explained. Typical features of the synchro-cyclotron, such as the beam capture problem, stable phase motion, and the extraction problem are discussed. The main design goals for beam injection are explained and special prob…
On-line monitoring of beam quality for high brightness beams is only possible using non-invasive instruments. For matching measurements, very few such instruments are available. One candidate is a quadrupole pick-up. Therefore, a new type of quadrupole pick-up has been developed for the 26 GeV Proton Synchrotron (PS) at CERN, and a measurement system consisting of two such pick-ups is now installed in this accelerator. Using the information from these pick-ups, it is possible to determine both injection matching and emittance in the horizontal and vertical planes, for each bunch separately. Th…
