In this paper, it is shown that in interaction with an oscillating bubbles cluster the fluid becomes inhomogeneous. The radial variation of the acoustic refractive index of the fluid generates an acoustic lens with spherical symmetry. When the focal length of the lens associated with the bubbles cluster is equal to the length of the position vector then the bubbles cluster behaves like a dumb hole. Unlike the properties of a bubble, the cluster, by compression under the action of attractive internal forces, can shrink its radius to become a dumb hole.
A theoretical formulation is proposed for forced mass transport by pressure gradients in a liquid binary mixture around a spherical bubble undergoing volume oscillations in a sound field. Assuming the impermeability of the bubble wall to both species, diffusion driven by pressure gradients and classical Fick-diffusion must cancel at the bubble wall, so that an oscillatory concentration gradient arises in the vicinity of the bubble. The Peclet number Pe is generally high in typical situations and Fick diffusion cannot restore equilibrium immediately, so that an asymptotic average concentration …
It is known that gas bubbles on the surface bounding a fluid flow can change the coefficient of friction and affect the parameters of the boundary layer. In this paper, we propose a method that allows us to create, in the near-wall region, a thin layer of liquid filled with bubbles. It will be shown that if there is an oscillating piezoelectric plate on the surface bounding a liquid, then, under certain conditions, cavitation develops in the boundary layer. The relationship between the parameters of cavitation and the characteristics of the piezoelectric plate oscillations is obtained. Possibl…
The present investigation shows that a triad of three vortices, two co-rotating vortices (TCV) and a secondary vortex lies beneath them and counter-rotating with them, is behind the quasi-periodic self-sustained bursting and reformation of the laminar separation bubble (LSB) and its associated low-frequency flow oscillation (LFO). The upstream vortex of the TCV (UV) is driven by the gradient of the oscillating-velocity across the laminar portion of the separated shear layer and is faithfully aligned with it. The secondary vortex acts as a roller support that facilitates the rotation and orient…
Detailed flow dissection using Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is carried out to investigate the dynamics of the flow-field around a NACA-0012 aerofoil at a Reynolds number of $5\times 10^4$, Mach number of $0.4$, and at various angles of attack around the onset of stall. Three distinct dominant flow modes are identified by the DMD and the POD: 1) a globally oscillating flow mode at a low-frequency (LFO mode 1); 2) a locally oscillating flow mode on the suction surface of the aerofoil at a low-frequency (LFO mode 2); and 3) a locally oscillating flow …
Acoustic microstreaming due to an oscillating microbubble is analytically investigated to obtain the circular streaming motion adjacent to a nearby wall. Classical theory due to Nyborg is carefully derived in the radial coordinates. The theory is used to obtain the flow field and the vortical motion caused by the microbubble motion. The length of the vertices are decreasing when the microbubble is excited at distances close to the rigid wall, while the maximum shear stress is increasing.
Nonlinear optical processes are vital for fields including telecommunications, signal processing, data storage, spectroscopy, sensing, and imaging. As an independent research area, nonlinear optics began with the invention of the laser, because practical sources of intense light needed to generate optical nonlinearities were not previously available. However the high power requirements of many nonlinear optical systems limit their use, especially in portable or medical applications, and so there is a push to develop new materials and resonant structures capable of producing nonlinear optical p…
We consider small oscillations of micro-particles and gaseous bubbles in viscous fluid around equilibrium states under the action of a sinusoidal external force. Exact solutions to the governing integro-differential equations containing both Stokes and memory-integral drag forces are obtained. The main aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the memory-integral drag force on the resonance characteristics of oscillating particles or gaseous bubbles in a viscous fluid at small Reynolds numbers. The resonant curves (amplitude versus frequency of external force), as well as phase-frequenc…
Natural or industrial flows of a fluid often involve droplets or bubbles of another fluid, pinned by physical or chemical impurities or by the roughness of the bounding walls. Here we study numerically one drop pinned on a circular hydrophilic patch, on an oscillating incline whose angle is proportional to $\sin(ω\,t)$. The resulting deformation of the drop is measured by the displacement of its center of mass, which behaves like a driven over-damped linear oscillator with amplitude $A(ω)$ and phase lag $φ(ω)$. The phase lag is ${\cal O}(ω)$ at small $ω$ like a linear oscillator, but the ampli…
Ultrasound-driven oscillating micro-bubbles have been used as active actuators in microfluidic devices to perform manifold tasks such as mixing, sorting and manipulation of microparticles. A common configuration consists on side-bubbles, created by trapping air pockets in blind channels perpendicular to the main channel direction. This configuration consists of acoustically excited bubbles with a semi-cylindrical shape that generate significant streaming flow. Due to the geometry of the channels, such flows have been generally considered as quasi two-dimensional. Similar assumptions are often …

Exploiting the full potential of MBs for applications requires a good understanding of their complex dynamics. Improved understanding of MB oscillations can lead to further enhancement in optimizing their efficacy in many applications and also invent new ones. Previous studies have predominantly addressed the behavior of a single isolated MB in an infinite liquid domain, whereas most applications employ MBs in clusters. Oscillating MBs have been shown to generate secondary pressure waves that modify the dynamics of the MBs in their proximity. A modified Keller-Miksis equation is used to accoun…
