Wave equations containing spatial derivatives which are higher than second order arise naturally in the context of condensed matter systems. The solutions of such equations contain more than two modes and consequently, the range of possible interactions between the different modes is significantly enhanced compared to the two mode case. We develop a framework for analysing the different mode interactions based on the classical turning points of the dispersion relation. We then apply this framework to the scattering of deep water gravity waves with a draining bathtub vortex, a system which constitutes the analogue of a rotating black hole in the non-dispersive limit. In particular, we show that the different scattering outcomes are controlled by the light-ring frequencies, a concept routinely applied in black hole physics, and two new frequencies which are related to the strength of dispersion. We find that the frequency range in which the reflected wave is superradiantly amplified appears as a simple modification to the non-dispersive case. However, the condition to observe this amplification is complicated by the fact that a superradiant mode can be reflected back into the system by scattering with one of the additional modes. We provide estimates for the reflection coefficients in the full dispersive regime.
In 2016, the Nottingham group detected the rotational superradiance effect. While this experiment demonstrated the robustness of the superradiance process, it still lacks a complete theoretical description due to the many effects at stage in the experiment. In this paper, we shine new light on this experiment by deriving an estimate of the reflection coefficient in the dispersive regime by means of a WKB analysis. This estimate is used to evaluate the reflection coefficient spectrum of counter rotating modes in the Nottingham experiment. Our finding suggests that the vortex flow in the superra…
We investigate the effect of superradiance shielding for the analogue rotating black holes simulated by optical vortices by calculating the radial motion of massless particles in such spacetime background. We add the conditions $E<LΩ_{r_{e}}$ and $L>0$ to judge the classically forbidden region of superradiance. It is found that the superradiance forbidden region exists near the static limit inside the ergosphere, which will limit the classical Penrose process for the particles with some specific energies and angular momenta. Once these particles satisfying the superradiance conditions aremeasur…
We consider the definition of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states for quantum fields on black hole space-times. The properties of these states on a Schwarzschild black hole have been understood for many years, but neither of these states has a direct analogue on a Kerr black hole. We show how superradiant modes play an important role in the definition of quantum states on Kerr. Superradiance is also present on static black hole space-times, in particular for a charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We explore whether analogues of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states exis…
Particles or waves scattered from a rotating black hole can be amplified through the process of Penrose superradiance, though this cannot currently be observed in an astrophysical setting. However, analogue gravity studies can create generic rotating geometries exhibiting an ergoregion, and this led to the first observation of Penrose superradiance as the over-reflection of water waves from a rotating fluid vortex. Here we theoretically demonstrate that Penrose superradiance arises naturally in the field of nonlinear optics. In particular, we elucidate the mechanism by which a signal beam can …
We study the quantum analogue of the classical process of superradiance for a massless charged scalar field on a static charged black hole space-time. We show that an "in" vacuum state, which is devoid of particles at past null infinity, contains an outgoing flux of particles at future null infinity. This radiation is emitted in the superradiant modes only, and is nonthermal in nature.
We set up a tunneling approach to the analogue Hawking effect in the case of models of analogue gravity which are affected by dispersive effects. An effective Schroedinger-like equation for the basic scattering phenomenon IN->P+N*, where IN is the incident mode, P is the positive norm reflected mode, and N* is the negative norm one, signalling particle creation, is derived, aimed to an approximate description of the phenomenon. Horizons and barrier penetration play manifestly a key-role in giving rise to pair-creation. The non-dispersive limit is also correctly recovered. Drawbacks of the mode…
We numerically study water wave packets on a spatially varying counter-current in the presence of surface tension. Depending on the details of the velocity profile, we show that traversable and bi-directional analogue wormholes exist in fluid mechanics. The limitations on traversability of wormholes in general relativity are absent here because of the dispersion of water waves and the ability to form flow profiles that are not solutions of Einstein's equations. We observe that negative energy can be trapped between analogue horizons forming a LASER-like cavity. Six horizons are involved in the…
We propose a new system suitable for studying analogue gravity effects, consisting of a gas flowing in a duct with a compliant wall. Effective transonic flows are obtained from uniform, low Mach number flows through the reduction of the one-dimensional speed of sound induced by the wall compliance. We show that the modified equation for linear perturbations can be written in a Hamiltonian form. We perform a one-dimensional reduction consistent with the canonical formulation, and deduce the analogue metric along with the first dispersive term. In a weak dispersive regime, the spectrum emitted f…
Simulation and experimental realization of acoustic black holes in analogue gravity systems have lead to a novel understanding of relevant phenomena such as Hawking radiation or superradiance. We explore here the possibility to use relativistic systems for simulating rotating black hole solutions and possibly get an acoustic analogue of a Kerr black hole. In doing so we demonstrate a precise relation between non-relativistic and relativistic solutions and provide a new class of vortex solutions for relativistic systems. Such solutions might be used in the future as a test bed in numerical simu…
We derive analytic expressions for the low-frequency properties of the analogue Hawking radiation in a general weak-dispersive medium. A thermal low-frequency part of the spectrum is expected even when dispersive effects become significant. We consider the two most common class of weak-dispersive media and investigate all possible anomalous scattering processes due inhomogeneous background flows. We first argue that under minimal assumptions, the scattering processes in near-critical flows are well described by a linearized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Within our theoretical model greybody fact…
Wave scattering phenomena are ubiquitous to almost all Sciences, from Biology to Physics. When an incident wave scatters off of an obstacle, it is partially reflected and partially transmitted. Since the scatterer absorbs part of the incident energy, the reflected wave carries less energy than the incident one. However, if the obstacle is rotating, this process can be reversed and waves can be amplified, extracting energy from the scatterer. Even though this phenomenon, known as superradiance, has been thoroughly analysed in several theoretical scenarios (from eletromagnetic radiation scatteri…
We investigate gravitational analogue models to describe slowly rotating objects (e.g., dark-matter halos, or boson stars) in terms of Bose-Einstein condensates, trapped in their own gravitational potentials. We begin with a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and show that the resulting background equations of motion are stable, as long as the rotational component is treated as a small perturbation. The dynamics of the fluctuations of the velocity potential are effectively governed by the Klein-Gordon equation of a "Eulerian metric," where we derive the latter by the use of a relativistic Lag…
We theoretically investigate superradiance effects in quantum field theories in curved space-times by proposing an analogue model based on Bose--Einstein condensates subject to a synthetic vector potential. The breaking of the irrotationality constraint of superfluids allows to study superradiance in simple planar geometries and obtain intuitive insight in the amplified scattering processes at ergosurfaces. When boundary conditions are modified allowing for reflections, dynamical instabilities are found, similar to the ones of ergoregions in rotating space-times. Their stabilization by horizon…
Wave scattering phenomena are ubiquitous in almost all Sciences, from Biology to Physics. Interestingly, it has been shown many times that different physical systems are the stage to the same processes. The discoveries of such analogies have resulted in a better understanding of Physics and are indications of the universality of Nature. One stunning example is the observation that waves propagating on a flowing fluid effectively experience the presence of a curved space-time. In this thesis we will use this analogy to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, fundamental effects occu…
We study water waves propagating over a smooth obstacle in a fluid of varying depth, motivated by the observation that submerged islands in the ocean act as effective lenses that increase the amplitude and destructive power of tsunami waves near focal points. We show that islands of substantial height (compared to the water depth) lead to strong focusing in their immediate vicinity, and generate caustics of either cusp or butterfly type. We highlight similarities and differences with focusing of (high-frequency) gravitational waves by a neutron star. In the linear regime, the comparison is mad…
We study the propagation of low frequency shallow water waves on a one dimensional flow of varying depth. When taking into account dispersive effects, the linear propagation of long wavelength modes on uneven bottoms excites new solutions of the dispersion relation which possess a much shorter wavelength. The peculiarity is that one of these new solutions has a negative energy. When the flow becomes supercritical, this mode has been shown to be responsible for the (classical) analog of the Hawking effect. For subcritical flows, the production of this mode has been observed numerically and expe…
Analogue gravity studies the physics of curved spacetime in laboratory experiments, where the propagation of elementary excitations in inhomogeneous flows is mapped to those of scalar fields in a curved spacetime metric. While most analogue gravity experiments are performed in 1+1 dimensions (one spatial plus time) and thus can only mimic only 1+1D spacetime, we present a 2+1D photon (room temperature) superfluid where the geometry of a rotating acoustic black hole can be realized in 2+1D dimensions. By measuring the local flow velocity and speed of waves in the superfluid, we identify a 2D re…
Periodic spatial variations of some parameter arise in analogue gravity experiments aimed at detecting the analogue version of the Hawking effect in a white hole flow. Having the same spatial periodicity as low-frequency dispersive modes, they can induce resonances which significantly modify the scattering coefficients. This has been shown numerically in a previous work [X. Busch et al., Phys. Rev. D 90, 105005 (2014)], but the precise dependence of the low-frequency effective temperature on the amplitude and length of the undulation remains elusive. In this article, using the Korteweg-de Vrie…
We consider further on the problem of the analogue Hawking radiation. We propose a fourth order ordinary differential equation, which allows to discuss the problem of Hawking radiation in analogue gravity in a unified way, encompassing fluids and dielectric media. In a suitable approximation, involving weak dispersive effects, WKB solutions are obtained far from the horizon (turning point), and furthermore an equation governing the behaviour near the horizon is derived, and a complete set of analytical solutions is obtained also near the horizon. The subluminal case of the original fluid model…
In the context of the interaction between the electromagnetic field and a dielectric dispersive lossless medium, we present a non-linear version of the relativistically covariant Hopfield model, which is suitable for the description of a dielectric Kerr perturbation propagating in a dielectric medium. The non-linearity is introduced in the Lagrangian through a self-interacting term proportional to the fourth power of the polarization field. We find an exact solution for the nonlinear equations describing a propagating perturbation in the dielectric medium. Furthermore the presence of an analog…

We take into account two further physical models which play an utmost importance in the framework of Analogue Gravity. We first consider Bose--Einstein condensates (BEC) and then surface gravity waves in water. Our approach is based on the use of the master equation we introduced in a previous work. A more complete analysis of the singular perturbation problem involved, with particular reference to the behavior in the neighbourhood of the (real) turning point and its connection with the WKB approximation, allows us to verify the thermal character of the particle production process. Furthermore…
Motivated by the need to conceive freely-precessing gyroscopes for detecting acoustic frame-dragging predicted recently in rotating acoustic analogue black holes, we report an incipient investigation on the hydrodynamics of nematic active fluids. With a specific assumption on barotropicity of a nematic fluid, we discern acoustic analogue black hole spacetimes experienced by linear perturbations of the velocity potential. For vanishingly small diffusivity of the active particles, linear perturbations of the active particle concentration reveal a profile with an enhancement close to the acoustic…
Due to the exponential high gravitational red shift near the event horizon of a black hole, it might appears that the Hawking radiation would be highly sensitive to some unknown high energy physics. To study possible deviations from the Hawking's prediction, the dispersive field theory models have been proposed, following the Unruh's hydrodynamic analogue of a black hole radiation. In the dispersive field theory models, the dispersion relations of matter fields are modified at high energies, which leads to modifications of equations of motion. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method t…
In \cite{PRL2011}, the authors have {\it "conducted experiments in order to verify the thermal nature of the stimulated Hawking process at a white hole horizon in a fluid analogue gravity system"} namely the linear mode conversion giving rise to negative energy waves i.e. the classical ingredient at the root of the Hawking effect in astrophysics. However, here we show that these experiments in Vancouver operated in a weakly non-linear regime that obscure them as was the case for the seminal experiments in Nice within a stronger non-linear regime \cite{NJP2008}. We finally shed some light on th…
In black hole evaporation process, the mass of the hole anti-correlates with the Hawking temperature. This indicates that the smaller holes have higher surface gravity. For analogue Hawking effects, however, the acoustic surface gravity is determined by the local values of the dynamical velocity of the stationary background fluid flow and the speed of propagation of the characteristic perturbation embedded in the background fluid, as well as by their space derivatives evaluated along the direction normal to the acoustic horizon, respectively. The mass of the analogue system - whether classical…
We consider the so-called Hopfield model for the electromagnetic field in a dielectric dispersive medium in a framework in which one allows a space-time dependence of microscopic parameters, aimed to a phenomenological description of a space-time varying dielectric perturbation induced by means of the Kerr effect. We discuss the analogue Hawking effect, by first analyzing the geometrical optics for the Hopfield model, and then by introducing a simplified model which has the bonus to avoid many difficulties which are involved in the full Hopfield model, still keeping the same dispersion relatio…
