In this manuscript, we propose a federated F-score based ensemble tree model for automatic rule extraction, namely Fed-FEARE. Under the premise of data privacy protection, Fed-FEARE enables multiple agencies to jointly extract set of rules both vertically and horizontally. Compared with that without federated learning, measures in evaluating model performance are highly improved. At present, Fed-FEARE has already been applied to multiple business, including anti-fraud and precision marketing, in a China nation-wide financial holdings group.

This paper investigates distantly supervised relation extraction in federated settings. Previous studies focus on distant supervision under the assumption of centralized training, which requires collecting texts from different platforms and storing them on one machine. However, centralized training is challenged by two issues, namely, data barriers and privacy protection, which make it almost impossible or cost-prohibitive to centralize data from multiple platforms. Therefore, it is worthy to investigate distant supervision in the federated learning paradigm, which decouples the model training…

Federated learning (FL) hyper-parameters significantly affect the training overheads in terms of computation time, transmission time, computation load, and transmission load. However, the current practice of manually selecting FL hyper-parameters puts a high burden on FL practitioners since various applications prefer different training preferences. In this paper, we propose FedTune, an automatic FL hyper-parameter tuning algorithm tailored to applications' diverse system requirements of FL training. FedTune is lightweight and flexible, achieving 8.48%-26.75% improvement for different datasets…

Federated learning allows edge devices to collaboratively learn a shared model while keeping the training data on device, decoupling the ability to do model training from the need to store the data in the cloud. We propose Federated matched averaging (FedMA) algorithm designed for federated learning of modern neural network architectures e.g. convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and LSTMs. FedMA constructs the shared global model in a layer-wise manner by matching and averaging hidden elements (i.e. channels for convolution layers; hidden states for LSTM; neurons for fully connected layers) wi…

Recently, some Neural Architecture Search (NAS) techniques are proposed for the automatic design of Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) architectures. They bring great convenience to the use of GCN, but could hardly apply to the Federated Learning (FL) scenarios with distributed and private datasets, which limit their applications. Moreover, they need to train many candidate GCN models from scratch, which is inefficient for FL. To address these challenges, we propose FL-AGCNS, an efficient GCN NAS algorithm suitable for FL scenarios. FL-AGCNS designs a federated evolutionary optimization strateg…

Federated Learning (FL) is a popular collaborative learning scheme involving multiple clients and a server. FL focuses on protecting clients' data but turns out to be highly vulnerable to Intellectual Property (IP) threats. Since FL periodically collects and distributes the model parameters, a free-rider can download the latest model and thus steal model IP. Split Federated Learning (SFL), a recent variant of FL that supports training with resource-constrained clients, splits the model into two, giving one part of the model to clients (client-side model), and the remaining part to the server (…

Most cross-device federated learning (FL) studies focus on the model-homogeneous setting where the global server model and local client models are identical. However, such constraint not only excludes low-end clients who would otherwise make unique contributions to model training but also restrains clients from training large models due to on-device resource bottlenecks. In this work, we propose FedRolex, a partial training (PT)-based approach that enables model-heterogeneous FL and can train a global server model larger than the largest client model. At its core, FedRolex employs a rolling su…

Vertical federated learning (VFL) leverages various privacy-preserving algorithms, e.g., homomorphic encryption or secret sharing based SecureBoost, to ensure data privacy. However, these algorithms all require a semi-honest secure definition, which raises concerns in real-world applications. In this paper, we present Aegis, a trusted, automatic, and accurate verification framework to verify the security of VFL jobs. Aegis is separated from local parties to ensure the security of the framework. Furthermore, it automatically adapts to evolving VFL algorithms by defining the VFL job as a finite …
Federated learning is a distributed machine learning method in which a single server and multiple clients collaboratively build machine learning models without sharing datasets on clients. Numerous methods have been proposed to cope with the data heterogeneity issue in federated learning. Existing solutions require a model architecture tuned by the central server, yet a major technical challenge is that it is difficult to tune the model architecture due to the absence of local data on the central server. In this paper, we propose Federated learning via Model exchange (FedMe), which personalize…

We propose a parametric family of algorithms for personalized federated learning with locally convex user costs. The proposed framework is based on a generalization of convex clustering in which the differences between different users' models are penalized via a sum-of-norms penalty, weighted by a penalty parameter $λ$. The proposed approach enables "automatic" model clustering, without prior knowledge of the hidden cluster structure, nor the number of clusters. Analytical bounds on the weight parameter, that lead to simultaneous personalization, generalization and automatic model clustering a…

In this work, we explore combining automatic hyperparameter tuning and optimization for federated learning (FL) in an online, one-shot procedure. We apply a principled approach on a method for adaptive client learning rate, number of local steps, and batch size. In our federated learning applications, our primary motivations are minimizing communication budget as well as local computational resources in the training pipeline. Conventionally, hyperparameter tuning methods involve at least some degree of trial-and-error, which is known to be sample inefficient. In order to address our motivation…

Air access networks have been recognized as a significant driver of various Internet of Things (IoT) services and applications. In particular, the aerial computing network infrastructure centered on the Internet of Drones has set off a new revolution in automatic image recognition. This emerging technology relies on sharing ground truth labeled data between Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms to train a high-quality automatic image recognition model. However, such an approach will bring data privacy and data availability challenges. To address these issues, we first present a Semi-supervised …

Fast identification of new network attack patterns is crucial for improving network security. Nevertheless, identifying an ongoing attack in a heterogeneous network is a non-trivial task. Federated learning emerges as a solution to collaborative training for an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). The federated learning-based IDS trains a global model using local machine learning models provided by federated participants without sharing local data. However, optimization challenges are intrinsic to federated learning. This paper proposes the Federated Simulated Annealing (FedSA) metaheuristic to s…
Automatic Speech Recognition models require large amount of speech data for training, and the collection of such data often leads to privacy concerns. Federated learning has been widely used and is considered to be an effective decentralized technique by collaboratively learning a shared prediction model while keeping the data local on different clients devices. However, the limited computation and communication resources on clients devices present practical difficulties for large models. To overcome such challenges, we propose Federated Pruning to train a reduced model under the federated set…

In this work, we propose FLVoogd, an updated federated learning method in which servers and clients collaboratively eliminate Byzantine attacks while preserving privacy. In particular, servers use automatic Density-based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) combined with S2PC to cluster the benign majority without acquiring sensitive personal information. Meanwhile, clients build dual models and perform test-based distance controlling to adjust their local models toward the global one to achieve personalizing. Our framework is automatic and adaptive that servers/clients don't…
The Federated Learning (FL) workflow of training a centralized model with distributed data is growing in popularity. However, until recently, this was the realm of contributing clients with similar computing capability. The fast expanding IoT space and data being generated and processed at the edge are encouraging more effort into expanding federated learning to include heterogeneous systems. Previous approaches distribute light-weight models to clients are rely on knowledge transfer to distil the characteristic of local data in partitioned updates. However, their additional knowledge exchange…
Many application scenarios call for training a machine learning model among multiple participants. Federated learning (FL) was proposed to enable joint training of a deep learning model using the local data in each party without revealing the data to others. Among various types of FL methods, vertical FL is a category to handle data sources with the same ID space and different feature spaces. However, existing vertical FL methods suffer from limitations such as restrictive neural network structure, slow training speed, and often lack the ability to take advantage of data with unmatched IDs. In…

Federated learning (FL) has rapidly risen in popularity due to its promise of privacy and efficiency. Previous works have exposed privacy vulnerabilities in the FL pipeline by recovering user data from gradient updates. However, existing attacks fail to address realistic settings because they either 1) require toy settings with very small batch sizes, or 2) require unrealistic and conspicuous architecture modifications. We introduce a new strategy that dramatically elevates existing attacks to operate on batches of arbitrarily large size, and without architectural modifications. Our model-agno…

Data scarcity and heterogeneity pose significant performance challenges for personalized federated learning, and these challenges are mainly reflected in overfitting and low precision in existing methods. To overcome these challenges, a multi-layer multi-fusion strategy framework is proposed in this paper, i.e., the server adopts the network layer parameters of each client upload model as the basic unit of fusion for information-sharing calculation. Then, a new fusion strategy combining personalized and generic is purposefully proposed, and the network layer number fusion threshold of each fus…
Federated learning can be used to train machine learning models on the edge on local data that never leave devices, providing privacy by default. This presents a challenge pertaining to the communication and computation costs associated with clients' devices. These costs are strongly correlated with the size of the model being trained, and are significant for state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition models. We propose using federated dropout to reduce the size of client models while training a full-size model server-side. We provide empirical evidence of the effectiveness of federated dro…

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental syndrome resulting from alterations in the embryological brain before birth. This disorder distinguishes its patients by special socially restricted and repetitive behavior in addition to specific behavioral traits. Hence, this would possibly deteriorate their social behavior among other individuals, as well as their overall interaction within their community. Moreover, medical research has proved that ASD also affects the facial characteristics of its patients, making the syndrome recognizable from distinctive signs within an individual'…

Federated Learning (FL) enables training state-of-the-art Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models on user devices (clients) in distributed systems, hence preventing transmission of raw user data to a central server. A key challenge facing practical adoption of FL for ASR is obtaining ground-truth labels on the clients. Existing approaches rely on clients to manually transcribe their speech, which is impractical for obtaining large training corpora. A promising alternative is using semi-/self-supervised learning approaches to leverage unlabelled user data. To this end, we propose FedNST, a no…

A large percentage of medical information is in unstructured text format in electronic medical record systems. Manual extraction of information from clinical notes is extremely time consuming. Natural language processing has been widely used in recent years for automatic information extraction from medical texts. However, algorithms trained on data from a single healthcare provider are not generalizable and error-prone due to the heterogeneity and uniqueness of medical documents. We develop a two-stage federated natural language processing method that enables utilization of clinical notes from…

The vehicle recognition area, including vehicle make-model recognition (VMMR), re-id, tracking, and parts-detection, has made significant progress in recent years, driven by several large-scale datasets for each task. These datasets are often non-overlapping, with different label schemas for each task: VMMR focuses on make and model, while re-id focuses on vehicle ID. It is promising to combine these datasets to take advantage of knowledge across datasets as well as increased training data; however, dataset integration is challenging due to the domain gap problem. This paper proposes ATEAM, an…

FGAN-AC is able to synthesize and classify multiple types of service data traffic from decentralized local datasets without requiring a large volume of manually labeled dataset or causin…
Much of the value that IoT (Internet-of-Things) devices bring to ``smart'' homes lies in their ability to automatically trigger other devices' actions: for example, a smart camera triggering a smart lock to unlock a door. Manually setting up these rules for smart devices or applications, however, is time-consuming and inefficient. Rule recommendation systems can automatically suggest rules for users by learning which rules are popular based on those previously deployed (e.g., in others' smart homes). Conventional recommendation formulations require a central server to record the rules used in …

We introduce KERT (Keyphrase Extraction and Ranking by Topic), a framework for topical keyphrase generation and ranking. By shifting from the unigram-centric traditional methods of unsupervised keyphrase extraction to a phrase-centric approach, we are able to directly compare and rank phrases of different lengths. We construct a topical keyphrase ranking function which implements the four criteria that represent high quality topical keyphrases (coverage, purity, phraseness, and completeness). The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated on two collections of content-representative titles …

Music highlights are valuable contents for music services. Most methods focused on low-level signal features. We propose a method for extracting highlights using high-level features from convolutional recurrent attention networks (CRAN). CRAN utilizes convolution and recurrent layers for sequential learning with an attention mechanism. The attention allows CRAN to capture significant snippets for distinguishing between genres, thus being used as a high-level feature. CRAN was evaluated on over 32,000 popular tracks in Korea for two months. Experimental results show our method outperforms three…
This article proposes two different approaches to automatically create a map for valid on-street car parking spaces. For this, we use car sharing park-out events data. The first one uses spatial aggregation and the second a machine learning algorithm. For the former, we chose rasterization and road sectioning; for the latter we chose decision trees. We compare the results of these approaches and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we show our results for a neighborhood in the city of Berlin and report a classification accuracy of 91.6\% on the original imbalanced data. Fin…
