In a previous report, the second and third authors gave general theorems for unique strong solutions of infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (ISDEs) describing the dynamics of infinitely many interacting Brownian particles. One of the critical assumptions is the \lq\lq IFC" condition. The IFC condition requires that, for a given weak solution, the scheme consisting of the finite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (SDEs) related to the ISDEs exists. Furthermore, the IFC condition implies that each finite-dimensional SDE has unique strong solutions. Unlike other assumptions, the IFC condition is challenging to verify, and so the previous report only verified solution for solutions given by quasi-regular Dirichlet forms. In the present paper, we provide a sufficient condition for the IFC requirement in more general situations. In particular, we prove the IFC condition without assuming the quasi-regularity or symmetry of the associated Dirichlet forms. As an application of the theoretical formulation, the results derived in this paper are used to prove the uniqueness of Dirichlet forms and the dynamical universality of random matrices.
Concentration inequalities are obtained on Poisson space, for random functionals with finite or infinite variance. In particular, dimension free tail estimates and exponential integrability results are given for the Euclidean norm of vectors of independent functionals. In the finite variance case these results are applied to infinitely divisible random variables such as quadratic Wiener functionals, including Lévy's stochastic area and the square norm of Brownian paths. In the infinite variance case, various tail estimates such as stable ones are also presented.
Consider the sum $Z = \sum_{n=1}^\infty λ_n (η_n - \mathbb{E}η_n)$, where $η_n$ are i.i.d.~gamma random variables with shape parameter $r > 0$, and the $λ_n$'s are predetermined weights. We study the asymptotic behavior of the tail $\sum_{n=M}^\infty λ_n (η_n - \mathbb{E}η_n)$ which is asymptotically normal under certain conditions. We derive a Berry-Essen bound and Edgeworth expansions for its distribution function. We illustrate the effectiveness of these expansions on an infinite sum of weighted chi-squared distributions.
We study the extremes of branching random walks under the assumption that the underlying Galton-Watson tree has infinite progeny mean. It is assumed that the displacements are either regularly varying or they have lighter tails. In the regularly varying case, it is shown that the point process sequence of normalized extremes converges to a Poisson random measure. We study the asymptotics of the scaled position of the rightmost particle in the $n$-th generation when the tail of the displacement behaves like $\exp(-K(x))$, where either $K$ is a regularly varying function of index $r> 0$, or $K$ …
We establish some asymptotic expansions for infinite weighted convolution of distributions having regular varying tails. Various applications to statistics and probability are developed.
We study the large deviation probabilities of infinite weighted sums of independent random variables that have stretched exponential tails. This generalizes Kiesel and Stadtmüller (2000), who study the same objects under the assumption of finite exponential moments, and Gantert et al.\ (2014), who study finite weighted sums with stretched exponential tails.
We develop an efficient simulation algorithm for computing the tail probabilities of the infinite series $S = \sum_{n \geq 1} a_n X_n$ when random variables $X_n$ are heavy-tailed. As $S$ is the sum of infinitely many random variables, any simulation algorithm that stops after simulating only fixed, finitely many random variables is likely to introduce a bias. We overcome this challenge by rewriting the tail probability of interest as a sum of a random number of telescoping terms, and subsequently developing conditional Monte Carlo based low variance simulation estimators for each telescoping …
A random vector $X$ with representation $X=\sum_{j\geq0}A_jZ_j$ is considered. Here, $(Z_j)$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random vectors and $(A_j)$ is a sequence of random matrices, `predictable' with respect to the sequence $(Z_j)$. The distribution of $Z_1$ is assumed to be multivariate regular varying. Moment conditions on the matrices $(A_j)$ are determined under which the distribution of $X$ is regularly varying and, in fact, `inherits' its regular variation from that of the $(Z_j)$'s. We compute the associated limiting measure. Examples include linear process…
We present general theorems solving the long-standing problem of the existence and pathwise uniqueness of strong solutions of infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (ISDEs) called interacting Brownian motions. These ISDEs describe the dynamics of infinite-many Brownian particles moving in $ \mathbb{R}^d $ with free potential $ Φ$ and mutual interaction potential $ Ψ$. We apply the theorems to essentially all interaction potentials of Ruelle's class such as the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential and Riesz potentials, and to logarithmic potentials appearing in random matrix theory. We …
The large deviations of an infinite moving average process with exponentially light tails are very similar to those of an i.i.d. sequence as long as the coefficients decay fast enough. If they do not, the large deviations change dramatically. We study this phenomenon in the context of functional large, moderate and huge deviation principles.
Given a recursive distributional equation (RDE) and a solution $μ$ of it, we consider the tree indexed invariant process called the recursive tree process (RTP) with marginal $μ$. We introduce a new type of bivariate uniqueness property which is different from the one defined by Aldous and Bandyopadhyay (2005), and we prove that this property is equivalent to tail-triviality for the RTP, thus obtaining a necessary and sufficient condition to determine tail-triviality for a RTP in general. As an application we consider Aldous' (2000) construction of the frozen percolation process on a infinite …
In this paper we study the number of customers in infinite-server queues with a self-exciting (Hawkes) arrival process. Initially we assume that service requirements are exponentially distributed and that the Hawkes arrival process is of a Markovian nature. We obtain a system of differential equations that characterizes the joint distribution of the arrival intensity and the number of customers. Moreover, we provide a recursive procedure that explicitly identifies (transient and stationary) moments. Subsequently, we allow for non-Markovian Hawkes arrival processes and non-exponential service t…
While small ball, or lower tail, asymptotic for Gaussian measures generated by solutions of stochastic ordinary differential equations is relatively well understood, a lot less is known in the case of stochastic partial differential equations. The paper presents exact logarithmic asymptotics of the small ball probabilities in a scale of Sobolev spaces when the Gaussian measure is generated by the solution of a diagonalizable stochastic parabolic equation. Compared to the finite-dimensional case, new effects appear in a certain range of the Sobolev exponents.
We consider the sums $S_n=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_n$ of independent identically distributed random variables. We do not assume that the $ξ$'s have a finite mean. Under subexponential type conditions on distribution of the summands, we find the asymptotics of the probability ${\bf P}\{M>x\}$ as $x\to\infty$, provided that $M=\sup\{S_n,\ n\ge1\}$ is a proper random variable. Special attention is paid to the case of tails which are regularly varying at infinity. We provide some sufficient conditions for the integrated weighted tail distribution to be subexponential. We supplement these conditions by a numbe…
We consider a measure of dependence for symmetric $α$-stable random vectors, which was introduced by the author in 1976. We demonstrate that this measure of dependence can be extended for much more broad class of random vectors (up to regularly varying vectors in separable Banach spaces). This measure is applied for linear random processes and fields with heavy-tailed innovations, for some stable processes, and these applications show that this dependence measure, named as $α$-covariance is a good substitute for the usual covariance. Also we discuss a problem of defining long, short, and negat…
An infinite convergent sum of independent and identically distributed random variables discounted by a multiplicative random walk is called perpetuity, because of a possible actuarial application. We give three disjoint groups of sufficient conditions which ensure that the distribution right tail of a perpetuity $\mathbb{P}\{X>x\}$ is asymptotic to $ax^ce^{-bx}$ as $x\to\infty$ for some $a,b>0$ and $c\in\mathbb{R}$. Our results complement those of Denisov and Zwart [J. Appl. Probab. 44 (2007), 1031--1046]. As an auxiliary tool we provide criteria for the finiteness of the one-sided exponential…
We study the $k$-largest eigenvalues of heavy-tailed sample covariance matrices of the form $\bX\bX^\T$ in an asymptotic framework, where the dimension of the data and the sample size tend to infinity. To this end, we assume that the rows of $\bX$ are given by independent copies of some stationary process with regularly varying marginals with index $α\in(0,2)$ satisfying large deviation and mixing conditions. We apply these general results to stochastic volatility and GARCH processes.
