We derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of a porous media filled with an incompressible fluid. We use a variational approach with a Lagrangian written as the sum of terms representing the kinetic and potential energy of the elastic matrix, and the kinetic energy of the fluid, coupled through the constraint of incompressibility. As an illustration of the method, the equations of motion for both the elastic matrix and the fluid are derived in the spatial (Eulerian) frame. Such an approach is of relevance e.g. for biological problems, such as sponges in water, where the elastic porous media is highly flexible and the motion of the fluid has a 'primary' role in the motion of the whole system. We then analyze the linearized equations of motion describing the propagation of waves through the media. In particular, we derive the propagation of S-waves and P-waves in an isotropic media. We also analyze the stability criteria for the wave equations and show that they are equivalent to the physicality conditions of the elastic matrix. Finally, we show that the celebrated Biot's equations for waves in porous media are obtained for certain values of parameters in our models.
Many parts of biological organisms are comprised of deformable porous media. The biological media is both pliable enough to deform in response to an outside force and can deform by itself using the work of an embedded muscle. For example, the recent work (Ludeman et al., 2014) has demonstrated interesting 'sneezing' dynamics of a freshwater sponge, when the sponge contracts and expands to clear itself from surrounding polluted water. We derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of such an active porous media (i.e., a deformable porous media that is capable of applying a force to itself w…
Permeability estimation of porous media from direct solving Navier--Stokes equation has a wide spectrum of applications in petroleum industry. In this paper, we utilize a pressure-correction projection algorithm in conjunction with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for space discretization to build an incompressible Navier--Stokes simulator and to use this simulator to calculate permeability of real rock sample. The proposed method is accurate, numerically robust, and exhibits the potential for tackling realistic problems.
Based on thermodynamic considerations we derive a set of equations relating the seepage velocities of the fluid components in immiscible and incompressible two-phase flow in porous media. They necessitate the introduction of a new velocity function, the co-moving velocity. This velocity function is a characteristic of the porous medium. Together with a constitutive relation between the velocities and the driving forces, such as the pressure gradient, these equations form a closed set. We solve four versions of the capillary tube model analytically using this theory. We test the theory numerica…
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating incompressible axisymmetric thermal flows in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. In the model, a D2Q9 MRT-LB equation is proposed to solve the flow field in addition to the D2Q5 LB equation for the temperature field. The source terms of the model are simple and contain no velocity and temperature gradient terms. The generalized axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flows in porous media are correctly recovered from the MRT-LB model through the C…
We initiate the study of stability of solutions of the 2D inviscid incompressible porous medium equation (IPM). We begin by classifying all stationary solutions of the inviscid IPM under mild conditions. We then prove some linear stability results. We then study solutions of the IPM equation which are sufficiently regular perturbations of linearly stable steady states. We prove that sufficiently regular perturbations which are also small must be globally regular and strongly converge to a steady state. The mechanism behind the stability is \emph{stratification} as opposed to previous stability…
In this paper, a two-dimensional eight-velocity (D2Q8) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for incompressible porous flows at the representative elementary volume scale based on the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy formulation. In the model, the porosity is included into the pressure-based equilibrium moments, and the linear and nonlinear drag forces of the porous media are incorporated into the model by adding a forcing term to the MRT-LB equation in the moment space. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, the generalized Navier-Stokes equations can be rec…
We construct a statistical mechanics for immiscible and incompressible two-phase flow in porous media under local steady-state conditions based on the Jaynes maximum entropy principle. A cluster entropy is assigned to our lack of knowledge of, and control over, the fluid and flow configurations in the pore space. As a consequence, two new variables describing the flow emerge: The agiture, that describes the level of agitation of the two fluids, and the flow derivative which is conjugate to the saturation. Agiture and flow derivative are the analogs of temperature and chemical potential in stan…
Multiphase flow in porous media occurs in several disciplines including petroleum reservoir engineering, petroleum systems' analysis, and CO$_2$ sequestration. While simulations often use a fully implicit discretization to increase the time step size, restrictions on the time step often exist due to non-convergence of the nonlinear solver (e.g. Newton's method). Here this problem is addressed for the Buckley-Leverett equations, which model incompressible, immiscible, two-phase flow with no capillary potential. The equations are recast as a gradient flow using the phase-field method, and a conv…
We consider the propagation of nonlinear plane waves in porous media within the framework of the Biot-Coussy biphasic mixture theory. The tortuosity effect is included in the model, and both constituents are assumed incompressible (Yeoh-type elastic skeleton, and saturating fluid). In this case, the linear dispersive waves governed by Biot's theory are either of compression or shear-wave type, and nonlinear waves can be classified in a similar way. In the special case of a neo-Hookean skeleton, we derive the explicit expressions for the characteristic wave speeds, leading to the hyperbolicity …
Velocity relaxation of a spherically symmetric polymer, immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid, and after a sudden small impulse or a sudden twist from a state of rest, is studied on the basis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations with an added Darcy type drag term. Explicit expressions for the translational and rotational velocity relaxation functions of the polymer and for the flow pattern of the fluid are derived for a uniform permeable sphere. Surprisingly, it is found that the added mass vanishes. For fairly large values of the ratio of sphere radius to the screening length charac…

Intelligent backpropagated neural networks application on Couette-Poiseuille flow of variable viscosity in a composite porous channel filled with an anisotropic porous layer
We compute the fluid flow time-correlation functions of incompressible, immiscible two-phase flow in porous media using a 2D network model. Given a properly chosen representative elementary volume, the flow rate distributions are Gaussian and the integrals of time correlation functions of the flows are found to converge to a finite value. The integrated cross-correlations become symmetric, obeying Onsager's reciprocal relations. These findings support the proposal of a non-equilibrium thermodynamic description for two-phase flow in porous media.
We perform more than 6000 steady-state simulations with a dynamic pore network model, corresponding to a large span in viscosity ratios and capillary numbers. From these simulations, dimensionless quantities such as relative permeabilities, residual saturations, mobility ratios and fractional flows are computed. Relative permeabilities and residual saturations show many of the same qualitative features observed in other experimental and modeling studies. However, while other studies find that relative permeabilities converge to straight lines at high capillary numbers we find that this is not …
Perfectly incompressible materials do not exist in nature but are a useful approximation of several media which can be deformed in non-isothermal processes but undergo very small volume variation. In this paper the linear analysis of the Darcy-Bénard problem is performed in the class of extended-quasi-thermal-incompressible fluids, introducing a factor $β$ which describes the compressibility of the fluid and plays an essential role in the instability results. In particular, in the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, a more realistic constitutive equation for the fluid density is employed in ord…
We study the stability of two-dimensional inviscid flows in an annulus between two porous cylinders with respect to three-dimensional perturbations. The basic flow is irrotational, and both radial and azimuthal components of the velocity are non-zero. The direction of the radial flow can be from the inner cylinder to the outer one (the diverging flow) or from the outer cylinder to the inner one (the converging flow). It had been shown earlier in Ref. \cite{IM2013a} that, independent of the direction of the radial flow, the basic flow can be unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. In t…
We construct an ensemble distribution to describe steady immiscible two-phase flow of two incompressible fluids in a porous medium. The system is found to be ergodic. The distribution is used to compute macroscopic flow parameters. In particular, we find an expression for the overall mobility of the system from the ensemble distribution. The entropy production at the scale of the porous medium is shown to give the expected product of the average flow and its driving force, obtained from a black-box description. We test numerically some of the central theoretical results.
In this paper we study the motion of an internal water wave and an internal wave in a porous medium. For these problems we establish that, if the free boundary and, in the case of the Euler equations, also the tangential velocity at the interface are sufficiently smooth, the depth cannot vanish in finite time. This results holds regardless of gravity and surface tension effects or, if applicable, the stratification in multiphase flows.
The dynamics of the wetting front are considered during the imbibition of a fluid into a porous substrate through a circular drawing area. A mathematical model of this process, assuming incompressible Darcy flow, is presented, before the full finite element scheme for solving this set of equations is given allowing the reader to reproduce all presented results. Asymptotic analysis is performed revealing contradictions between the assumptions of Darcy's equation and the solutions it produces, along with qualitative results for the behaviour of the wetting front and macroscopic contact angles. V…
We present modeling of the incompressible viscous flows in the domain containing an unconfined fluid and a porous medium. For such setting a rigorous derivation of the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition was undertaken by Jäger and Mikelić [SIAM J. Appl. Math. \rm 60 (2000), p. 1111-1127] using the homogenization method. So far the interface law for the pressure was conceived and confirmed only numerically. In this article we justify rigorously the pressure jump condition using the corresponding boundary layer.
In this work, the linear stability of the viscous incompressible fluid flow between two parallel horizontal porous stationary plates with the assumption that there is a small constant suction at upper plate and a small constant injection at the lower plate is studied. The Navier-Stokes and continuous equations are reduced to an equation modified by the suction Reynolds number, which we call modified Orr-Sommerfeld equation. This equation is rewritten as an eigenvalue problem and is solved numerically using Matlab (Windows Version). The effect of small suction Reynolds number on the linear stabi…
We consider the slow flow of a viscous incompressible liquid in a channel of constant but arbitrary cross section shape, driven by non-uniform suction or injection through the porous channel walls. A similarity transformation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a set of coupled equations for the velocity potential in two dimensions. When the channel aspect ratio and Reynolds number are both small, the problem reduces to solving the biharmonic equation with constant forcing in two dimensions. With the relevant boundary conditions, determining the velocity field in a porous channels is thus e…
In this paper, a double multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model is developed for simulating transient solid-liquid phase change problems in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The model uses two different multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann equations, one for the flow field and the other for the temperature field with nonlinear latent heat source term. The model is based on the generalized non-Darcy formulation, and the solid-liquid phase change interface is traced through the liquid fraction which is determined by the enthalpy method. The model is valid…
Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been applied to predict flow properties of porous media including intrinsic permeability, where it is implicitly assumed that the LBM is equivalent to the incompressible (or near incompressible) Navier-Stokes equation. However, in LBM simulations, high-order moments, which are completely neglected in the Navier-Stokes equation, are still available through particle distribution functions. To ensure that the LBM simulation is correctly working at the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic level, the high-order moments have to be negligible. This requires that the Knudsen n…
We present a theoretical framework for immiscible incompressible two-phase flow in homogeneous porous media that connects the distribution of local fluid velocities to the average seepage velocities. By dividing the pore area along a cross-section transversal to the average flow direction up into differential areas associated with the local flow velocities, we construct a distribution function that allows us not only to re-establish existing relationships between the seepage velocities of the immiscible fluids, but also to find new relations between their higher moments. We support and demonst…
The spreading of an incompressible viscous liquid over an isotropic homogeneous unsaturated porous substrate is considered. It is shown that, unlike the dynamic wetting of an impermeable solid substrate, where the dynamic contact angle has to be specified as a boundary condition in terms of the wetting velocity and other flow characteristics, the `effective' dynamic contact angle on an unsaturated porous substrate is completely determined by the requirement of existence of a solution, i.e. the absence of a nonintegrable singularity in the spreading fluid's pressure at the `effective' contact l…
It is well known that the transient behavior during drainage or imbibition in multiphase flow in porous media strongly depends on the history and initial condition of the system. However, when the steady-state regime is reached and both drainage and imbibition take place at the pore level, the influence of the evolution history and initial preparation is an open question. Here, we present an extensive experimental and numerical work investigating the history dependence of simultaneous steady-state two-phase flow through porous media. Our experimental system consists of a Hele-Shaw cell filled …
A bidisperse porous medium is one with two porosity scales. There are the usual pores known as macro pores but also cracks or fissures in the skeleton which give rise to micro pores. In this article we develop and analyse a model for thermal convection where a layer of viscous incompressible fluid overlies a layer of bidisperse porous medium. Care has to be taken with the boundary conditions at the interface of the fluid and the porous material and this aspect is investigated. The situation is one in a layer which is heated from below and under appropriate conditions bimodal neutral curves are…
Flow through porous, elastically deforming media is present in a variety of natural contexts ranging from large-scale geophysics to cellular biology. In the case of incompressible constituents, the porefluid pressure acts as a Lagrange multiplier to satisfy the resulting constraint on fluid divergence. The resulting system of equations is a possibly non-linear saddle-point problem and difficult to solve numerically, requiring nonlinear implicit solvers or flux-splitting methods. Here, we present a method for the simulation of flow through porous media and its coupled elastic deformation. The p…
A new approach to the modelling of wetting fronts in porous media on the Darcy scale is developed, based on considering the types (modes) of motion the menisci go through on the pore scale. This approach is illustrated using a simple model case of imbibition of a viscous incompressible liquid into an isotropic porous matrix with two modes of motion for the menisci, the wetting mode and the threshold mode. The latter makes it necessary to introduce an essentially new technique of conjugate problems that allows one to link threshold phenomena on the pore scale with the motion on the Darcy scale.…
A fundamental variable characterizing immiscible two-phase flow in porous media is the wetting saturation, which is the ratio between the pore volume filled with wetting fluid and the total pore volume. More generally, this variable comes from a specific choice of coordinates on some underlying space, the domain of variables that can be used to express the volumetric flow rate. The underlying mathematical structure allows for the introduction of other variables containing the same information, but which are more convenient from a theoretical point of view. We introduce along these lines polar …
Many theoretical and experimental results show that solute transport in heterogeneous porous media exhibits multi-scaling behaviors. To describe such non-Fickian diffusions, this work provides a distributed order Hausdorff diffusion model to describe the tracer transport in porous media. This model is proved to be equivalent with the diffusion equation model with a nonlinear time dependent diffusion coefficient. In conjunction with the structural derivative, its mean squared displacement (MSD) of the tracer particles is explicitly derived as a dilogarithm function when the weight function of t…
Fully developed forced convective flow in a channel filled with porous material bounded by two impermeable walls subject to constant heat flux is considered. We consider Brinkman-Forchhimer equation to govern the flow inside the porous medium which accounts for the presence of inertial term. We assume that the porous medium is anisotropic in nature and permeability is varying along all the directions, correspondingly, permeability will be a matrix which appear as a positive semi-definite matrix in the momentum equation. The anisotropic nature of the porous medium is characterized by anisotropi…
In this article, effects of heat transfer on MHD blood flow through a stenosed inclined porous artery with heat source have been investigated. The viscosity of the blood is assumed to be varying radially with hematocrit throughout the region of the artery. Governing equations have been derived by treating blood as incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Newtonian fluid. Momentum and energy equations of the fluid flow are simplified under the assumption of mild stenosis. Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is used to solve nonlinear differential equations for velocity and temperature profiles o…
This paper demonstrates a numerical study of heat transfer in a square porous cavity filled with non-Newtonian power-law fluid. A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been used to accelerate the numerical simulation, which uses the Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT) Lattice Boltzmann Method. A modified power-law model has been employed to characterize the flow of non-Newtonian fluids. The simulations have been conducted for the power-law index $n$ ranging from $(0.6 \leq n \leq 1.0)$, the Darcy number $Da$ ranging from $(10^{-3} \leq Da \leq 10^{-1})$ and the Rayleigh number $Ra$ ranging from $(10^3…
Using thermodynamic and variational principles we examine a basic phase field model for a mixture of two incompressible fluids in strongly perforated domains. With the help of the multiple scale method with drift and our recently introduced splitting strategy for Ginzburg-Landau/Cahn-Hilliard-type equations [Schmuck et al., Proc. R. Soc. A 468:3705-3724, 2012.], we rigorously derive an effective macroscopic phase field formulation under the assumption of periodic flow and a sufficiently large Péclet number. As for classical convection-diffusion problems, we obtain systematically diffusion-disp…
This investigation deals with the analysis of stagnation point heat transfer and corresponding flow features of hydromagnetic viscous incompressible fluid over a vertical shrinking sheet. The considered sheet is assumed to be permeable and subject to addition of stagnation point to control the generated vorticity in the boundary layer. The sheet is placed on the right side of the fluid saturated porous medium which is having permeability of specified form. Nonlinear convection waves in the flow field are realized due to the envisaged nonlinear relation between density and temperature. The equa…
Gas slippage occurs when the mean free path of the gas molecules is in the order of the characteristic pore size of a porous medium. This phenomenon leads to the Klinkenberg's effect where the measured permeability of a gas (apparent permeability) is higher than that of the liquid (intrinsic permeability). A generalized lattice Boltzmann model is proposed for flow through porous media that includes Klinkenberg's effect, which is based on the model of Guo et al. (Z.L. Guo et al., Phys.Rev.E 65, 046308 (2002)). The second-order Beskok and Karniadakis-Civan's correlation (A. Beskok and G. Karniad…
We perform direct numerical simulations of the flow through a model of a deformable porous medium. Our model is a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice, with defects, of soft elastic cylindrical pillars, with elastic shear modulus $G$, immersed in a liquid. We use a two-phase approach: the liquid phase is a viscous fluid and the solid phase is modeled as an incompressible viscoelastic material, whose complete nonlinear structural response is considered. We observe that the Darcy flux ($q$) is a nonlinear function -- steeper than linear -- of the pressure-difference ($ΔP$) across the medium. Furthe…
The two-scale computational homogenization method is proposed for modelling of locally periodic fluid-saturated media subjected a to large deformation induced by quasistatic loading. The periodic heterogeneities are relevant to the mesoscopic scale at which a double porous medium constituted by hyperelastic skeleton and an incompressible viscous fluid is featured by large contrasts in the permeability. Within the Eulerian framework related to the current deformed configuration, the two-scale homogenization approach is applied to a linearized model discretized in time, being associated with an …
Direct numerical simulations are presented for a porous media model consisting of two immiscible fluids, an invading and defending phase, in a two-dimensional micro-geometry filled with randomly sized and randomly distributed cylinders. First, interface instability and penetration modes are studied when varying the wetting features of a single pore in the porous medium. It is found that the displacement patterns not only change with the capillary number, as previously observed, but also are a function of the contact angle, even for a viscosity ratio of unity. This is an important conclusion su…
