Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) have long posed a challenge for theorists, and self-consistently reproducing the properties of the SMG population in a large-volume cosmological hydrodynamical simulation has not yet been achieved. We use a scaling relation derived from previous simulations plus radiative transfer calculations to predict the submm flux densities of simulated SMGs drawn from cosmological simulations from the Illustris and IllustrisTNG projects based on the simulated galaxies' star formation rates (SFRs) and dust masses and compare the predicted number counts with observations. We find that the predicted SMG number counts based on IllustrisTNG are significantly less than observed (more than 1 dex at $S_{850} \gtrsim 4$ mJy). The simulation from the original Illustris project yields more SMGs than IllustrisTNG: the predicted counts are consistent with those observed at both $S_{850} \lesssim 5$ mJy and $S_{850} \gtrsim 9$ mJy and only a factor of $\sim 2$ lower than observed at intermediate flux densities. The redshift distribution of SMGs with $S_{850} > 3$ mJy in IllustrisTNG is consistent with the observed distribution, whereas the Illustris redshift distribution peaks at significantly lower redshift (1.5 vs. 2.8). We demonstrate that IllustrisTNG hosts fewer SMGs than Illustris because in the former, high-mass ($M_{\star} \sim 10^{11} \, \text{M}_{\odot}$) $z \sim 2-3$ galaxies have lower dust masses and SFRs than in Illustris owing to differences in the sub-grid models for stellar or/and active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback between the two simulations (we unfortunately cannot isolate the specific cause(s) post hoc). Our results demonstrate that because our method enables predicting SMG number counts in post-processing with a negligible computational expense, SMGs can provide useful constraints for tuning sub-grid models in future large-volume cosmological simulations.
Core-collapse supernovae (SNe) are believed to be the first significant source of dust in the Universe. Such SNe are expected to be the main dust producers in young high-redshift Lyman $α$ emitters (LAEs) given their young ages, providing an excellent testbed of SN dust formation models during the early stages of galaxy evolution. We focus on the dust enrichment of a specific, luminous LAE (Himiko, $z\simeq 6.6$) for which a stringent upper limit of $52.1~μ$Jy ($3σ$) has recently been obtained from ALMA continuum observations at 1.2 mm. We predict its submillimetre dust emission using detailed…

The fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation (FGPA) is a commonly-used method to generate mock Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest absorption skewers at Cosmic Noon ($z\gtrsim 2$) from the matter-density field of $N$-body simulations without running expensive hydrodynamical simulations. Motivated by recent developments in 3D IGM tomography observations as well as matter density field reconstruction techniques applied to galaxy redshift samples at $z\sim 2$, we examine the possibility of observationally testing FGPA by directly examining the relationship between the Ly$α$ transmission and the underlying ma…
Using a set of cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations, we constrained the properties of primordial magnetic fields by studying their impact on the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. We performed a large set of simulations (8 dark matter only and 72 chemo-hydrodynamical) including primordial magnetic fields through the extra density fluctuations they induce at small length scales ($k \geq 10\,h\,\rm{Mpc^{-1}}$) in the matter power spectrum. We explored a large variety of primordial magnetic fields with strength $B_λ$ ranging from $0.05$ to $0.50\,\textrm{nG}$ and magnetic energy spect…
We investigate the evolution in galactic dust mass over cosmic time through i) empirically derived dust masses using stacked submillimetre fluxes at 850um in the COSMOS field, and ii) dust masses derived using a robust post-processing method on the results from the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG. We effectively perform a self-calibration of the dust mass absorption coefficient by forcing the model and observations to agree at low redshift and then compare the evolution shown by the observations with that predicted by the model. We create dust mass functions (DMFs) based on…
We examine the role of energy feedback in shaping the distribution of metals within cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of L* disc galaxies. While negative abundance gradients today provide a boundary condition for galaxy evolution models, in support of inside-out disc growth, empirical evidence as to whether abundance gradients steepen or flatten with time remains highly contradictory. We made use of a suite of L* discs, realised with and without `enhanced' feedback. All the simulations were produced using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code Gasoline, and their in situ gas-phase meta…
We study the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryons on the shape of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their dark matter haloes, comparing them to the predictions of the cold dark matter (CDM) scenario. We use five hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of haloes hosting ETGs ($M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{13}M_{\odot}$ and $M_{*}\sim10^{11}M_{\odot}$), simulated in CDM and a SIDM model with constant cross-section of $σ_T/m_χ= 1\ \mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{g}^{-1}$. We measure the three-dimensional and projected shapes of the dark matter haloes and their baryonic content using the inertia tensor …
Large-scale stellar surveys coupled with recent developments in magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of Milky Way-mass galaxies provide an unparalleled opportunity to unveil the physical processes driving the evolution of the Galaxy. We developed a framework to compare a variety of parameters with their corresponding predictions from simulations in an unbiased manner, taking into account the selection function of a stellar survey. We applied this framework to a sample of over 7000 stars with asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric data available, together with 6 simulation…
We present constraints on the timescale of star formation variability and the correlation between star formation and host halo accretion histories of star-forming (SF) central galaxies from the scatter of the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). SF galaxies are found to have a tight relationship between their star formation rates and stellar masses on the so-called "star-forming sequence" (SFS), which characterizes their SF histories and $M_*$ growths. Meanwhile, observed SHMR constraints connect $M_*$ growth to halo accretion history. Combining these observed trends with a cosmological $N$-b…

With the advent of large spectroscopic surveys the amount of high quality chemo-dynamical data in the Milky Way (MW) increased tremendously. Accurately and correctly capturing and explaining the detailed features in the high-quality observational data is notoriously difficult for state-of-the-art numerical models. In order to keep up with the quantity and quality of observational datasets, improved prescriptions for galactic chemical evolution need to be incorporated into the simulations. Here we present a new, flexible, time resolved chemical enrichment model for cosmological simulations. Our…
We estimate the 3D density profile of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo within $r \lesssim 30$ kpc from the Galactic centre by using the astrometric data for halo RR Lyrae stars from Gaia DR2. We model both the stellar halo distribution function and the Galactic potential, fully taking into account the survey selection function, the observational errors, and the missing line-of-sight velocity data for RR Lyrae stars. With a Bayesian MCMC method, we infer the model parameters, including the density flattening of the DM halo $q$, which is assumed to be constant as a function of radius. We find …
We present a simulation of the long-term evolution of a Population III supernova remnant in a cosmological minihalo. Employing passive Lagrangian tracer particles, we investigate how chemical stratification and anisotropy in the explosion can affect the abundances of the first low-mass, metal-enriched stars. We find that reverse shock heating can leave the inner mass shells at entropies too high to cool, leading to carbon-enhancement in the re-collapsing gas. This hydrodynamic selection effect could explain the observed incidence of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars at low metallicity. W…
We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that …
We study the effect of Active Nuclei Galaxy (AGN) feedback as one of the major mechanisms modifying the cluster morphology influencing scaling relations, which are the most uncertain factor in constraining cosmology with clusters of galaxies. Using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations we investigate how the AGN feedback changes the X-ray morphology of the simulated systems, and compare to the observed REXCESS (Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey) clusters. We apply centre shifts and power ratios to characterise the cluster morphology, and find that our simulated clusters are …
Galaxy spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling is a powerful tool, but constraining how well it is able to infer the true values for galaxy properties (e.g. the star formation rate, SFR) is difficult because independent determinations are often not available. However, galaxy simulations can provide a means of testing SED modelling techniques. Here, we present a numerical experiment in which we apply the SED modelling code MAGPHYS to ultraviolet (UV)--millimetre (mm) synthetic photometry generated from hydrodynamical simulations of an isolated disc galaxy and a major galaxy merger by perfo…
The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) provides new constraints for galaxy formation models on the molecular gas properties of galaxies. We compare results from ASPECS to predictions from two cosmological galaxy formation models: the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and the Santa Cruz semi-analytic model (SC SAM). We explore several recipes to model the H$_2$ content of galaxies, finding them to be consistent with one another, and take into account the sensitivity limits and survey area of ASPECS. For a canonical CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of $α_{\rm CO…
Elliptical galaxies today appear aligned with the large-scale structure of the Universe, but it is still an open question when they acquire this alignment. Observational data is currently insufficient to provide constraints on the time evolution of intrinsic alignments, and hence existing models range from assuming that galaxies gain some primordial alignment at formation, to suggesting that they react instantaneously to tidal interactions with the large-scale structure. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, we measure the relative alignments between the major axes of g…

We present the 3-{\it dimensional} intrinsic alignment power spectra between the projected 2d galaxy shape/spin and the 3d tidal field across $0.1<k/h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}<60$ using cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, Illustris-TNG300, at redshifts ranging from $0.3$ to $2$. The shape-tidal field alignment increases with galaxy mass and the linear alignment coefficient $A_{\rm IA}$, defined with respect to the primordial tidal field, is found to have weak redshift dependence. We also show a promising detection of the shape/spin-tidal field alignments for stellar mass limited samples and a weak or…
The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is a powerful tool with the potential for constraining directly the properties of the hot gas that dominates dark matter halos because it measures pressure and thus thermal energy density. Studying this hot component of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is important because it is strongly impacted by star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in galaxies, participating in the feedback loop that regulates star and black hole mass growth in galaxies. We study the tSZ effect across a wide halo mass range using three cosmological hydrodynamic…
