Providing evidence of finite-time singularities of the incompressible Euler equations in three space dimensions is still an unsolved problem. Likewise, the zeroth law of turbulence has not been proven to date by numerical experiments. We address this issue by high-resolution numerical simulations of the inviscid three-dimensional Taylor-Green vortex problem using a novel high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretization approach. Our main finding is that the kinetic energy evolution does not tend towards exact energy conservation for increasing spatial resolution of the numerical scheme, but instead converges to a solution with nonzero kinetic energy dissipation rate. This implies an energy dissipation anomaly in the absense of viscous dissipation according to Onsager's conjecture, and serves as an indication of finite-time singularities in incompressible inviscid flows. We demonstrate convergence to a dissipative solution for the three-dimensional inviscid Taylor-Green problem with a measured relative $L_2$-error of $0.27 \%$ for the temporal evolution of the kinetic energy and $3.52 \%$ for the kinetic energy dissipation rate.
This paper presents the analysis of axisymmetric helical magnetorotational instability (HMRI) in the inviscid limit, which is relevant for astrophysical conditions. The inductionless approximation defined by zero magnetic Prandtl number is adopted to distinguish the HMRI from the standard MRI in the cylindrical Taylor-Couette flow subject to a helical magnetic field. Using a Chebyshev collocation method convective and absolute instability thresholds are computed in terms of the Elsasser number for a fixed ratio of inner and outer radii λ=2 and various ratios of rotation rates and helicities of…
The growth rate of the compressible Rayleigh-Taylor instability is studied in the presence of a background temperature gradient, $Θ$, using a normal mode analysis. The effect of $Θ$ variation is examined for three interface types corresponding to combinations of the viscous properties of the fluids (inviscid-inviscid, viscous-viscous and viscous-inviscid) at different Atwood numbers, $At$, and, when at least one of the fluids' viscosity is non-zero, as a function of the Grashof number. For the general case, the resulting ordinary differential equations are solved numerically; however, dispersi…
We chart a singular landscape in the temporal domain of the inviscid Burgers equation in one space dimension for sine-wave initial conditions. These so far undetected complex singularities are arranged in an eye shape centered around the origin in time. Interestingly, since the eye is squashed along the imaginary time axis, complex-time singularities can become physically relevant at times well before the first real singularity -- the pre-shock. Indeed, employing a time-Taylor representation for the velocity around $t=0$, loss of convergence occurs roughly at 2/3 of the pre-shock time for the …
We investigate long time numerical simulations of the inviscid Rayleigh-Taylor instability at Atwood number one using a boundary integral method. We are able to attain the asymptotic behavior for the spikes predicted by Clavin & Williams\cite{clavin} for which we give a simplified demonstration. In particular we observe that the spike's curvature evolves like $t^3$ while the overshoot in acceleration shows a good agreement with the suggested $1/t^5$ law. Moreover, we obtain consistent results for the prefactor coefficients of the asymptotic laws. Eventually we exhibit the self-similar behavior…
The `Rayleigh line' $μ=η^2$, where $μ=Ω_o/Ω_i$ and $η=r_i/r_o$ are respectively the rotation and radius ratios between inner (subscript `i') and outer (subscript `o') cylinders, is regarded as marking the limit of centrifugal instability (CI) in unstratified inviscid Taylor-Couette flow, for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes. Non-axisymmetric stratorotational instability (SRI) is known to set in for anticyclonic rotation ratios beyond that line, i.e. $η^2<μ<1$ for axially stably-stratified Taylor-Couette flow, but the competition between CI and SRI in the range $μ<η^2$ has not yet b…
We study the stability of the Couette-Taylor flow between porous cylinders with radial throughflow. It had been shown earlier that this flow can be unstable with respect to non-axisymmetric (azimuthal or helical) waves provided that the radial Reynolds number, $R$ (constructed using the radial velocity at the inner cylinder and its radius), is high. In this paper, we present a very detailed and, in many respects, novel chart of critical curves in a region of moderate values of $R$, and we show that, starting from values of $R$, as low as $10$, the critical modes inherited from the inviscid ins…
The temporal instability of stably stratified flow was investigated by analyzing the Taylor-Goldstein equation theoretically. According to this analysis, the stable stratification $N^2\geq0$ has a destabilization mechanism, and the flow instability is due to the competition of the kinetic energy with the potential energy, which is dominated by the total Froude number $Fr_t^2$. Globally, $Fr_t^2 \leq 1$ implies that the total kinetic energy is smaller than the total potential energy. So the potential energy might transfer to the kinetic energy after being disturbed, and the flow becomes unstabl…
The general stability criteria of inviscid Taylor-Couette flows with angular velocity $Ω(r)$ are obtained analytically. First, a necessary instability criterion for centrifugal flows is derived as $ξ'(Ω-Ω_s)<0$ (or $ξ'/(Ω-Ω_s)<0$) somewhere in the flow field, where $ξ$ is the vorticitiy of profile and $Ω_s$ is the angular velocity at the inflection point $ξ'=0$. Second, a criterion for stability is found as $-(μ_1+1/r_2)<f(r)=\frac{ξ'}{Ω-Ω_s}<0$, where $μ_1$ is the smallest eigenvalue. The new criteria are the analogues of the criteria for parallel flows, which are special cases of Arnol'd's n…
We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
The potential flow of an incompressible inviscid heavy fluid over a light one is considered. The integral version of the method of matched asymptotic expansion is applied to the construction of the solution over long intervals of time. The asymptotic solution describes the flow in which a bubble rises with constant speed and the "tongue" is in free fall. The outer expansion is stationary, but the inner one depends on time. It is shown that the solution exists within the same range of Froude number obtained previously by Vanden-Broeck (1984a,b). The Froude number and the solution depend on the …
We report on two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in immiscible fluids. A diffuse-interface model that combines the Cahn-Hilliard equation, governing the evolution of the volume fraction of one fluid, and the Navier-Stokes equations, governing the bulk velocity and pressure, is used. The study is limited to low Atwood numbers owing to the use of the Boussinesq approximation. The code is based on a pseudo-spectral method. A linear analysis is first performed in a two-dimensional case of Rayleigh-Taylor instability to confirm that the model very well …
The goal of this paper is to develop a high order numerical method based on Kinetic Inviscid Flux (KIF) method and Flux Reconstruction (FR) framework. The KIF aims to find a balance between the excellent merits of Gas-Kinetic Scheme (GKS) and the lower computational costs. The idea of KIF can be viewed as an inviscid-viscous splitting version of the gas-kinetic scheme, and Shu and Ohwada have made the fundamental contribution. The combination of Totally Thermalized Transport (TTT) scheme and Kinetic Flux Vector Splitting (KFVS) method are achieved in KIF. Using a coefficient which is related t…
In this article we establish linear inviscid damping with optimal decay rates around 2D Taylor-Couette flow and similar monotone flows in an annular domain $B_{r_{2}}(0) \setminus B_{r_{1}}(0) \subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$. Following recent results by Wei, Zhang and Zhao, we establish stability in weighted norms, which allow for a singularity formation at the boundary, and additional provide a description of the blow-up behavior.
The linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a system of superposed immiscible compressible ideal fluids are analyzed. The results of the analysis reconcile the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of compressibility reported in the literature. It is shown that the growth rate $n$ obtained for an inviscid, compressible flow in an infinite domain is bounded by the growth rates obtained for the corresponding incompressible flows with uniform and exponentially varying density. As the equilibrium pressure at the interface $p_\infty$ increases (less compressible flow), $n$ increases towards the unif…
Taylor-Goldstein equation (TGE) governs the stability of a shear-flow of an inviscid fluid of variable density. It is investigated here from a rigorous geometrical point of view using a canonical class of its transformations. Rayleigh's point of inflection criterion and Fjortoft's condition of instability of a homogenous shear-flow have been generalized here so that only the profile carrying the point of inflection is modified by the variation of density. This fulfils a persistent expectation in the literature. A pair of bounds exists such that in any unstable flow the flow-curvature (a functi…
A concise review is given of astrophysically motivated experimental and theoretical research on Taylor-Couette flow. The flows of interest rotate differentially with inner cylinder faster than outer one but are linearly stable against Rayleigh's inviscid centrifugal instability. At shear Reynolds numbers as large as 10^6, hydrodynamic flows of this type (quasi-keplerian) appear to be nonlinearly stable: no turbulence is seen that cannot be attributed to interaction with the axial boundaries, rather than the radial shear itself. Direct numerical simulations agree, although they cannot yet reach…
We numerically study turbulent Taylor-Couette flow (TCF) between two independently rotating cylinders and the transition to rotating plane Couette flow (RPCF) in the limit of infinite radii. By using the shear Reynolds number $Re_S$ and rotation number $R_Ω$ as dimensionless parameters, the transition from TCF to RPCF can be studied continuously without singularities. Already for radius ratios $η\geq0.9$ we find that the simulation results for various radius ratios and for RPCF collapse as a function of $R_Ω$, indicating a turbulent behaviour common to both systems. We observe this agreement i…

The dispersed phase in turbulence can vary from almost inviscid fluid to highly viscous fluid. By changing the viscosity of the dispersed droplet phase, we experimentally investigate how the deformability of dispersed droplets affects the global transport quantity of the turbulent emulsion. Different kinds of silicone oil are employed to result in the viscosity ratio, $ζ$, ranging from $0.53$ to $8.02$. The droplet volume fraction, $ϕ$, is varied from 0\% to 10\% with a spacing of 2\%. The global transport quantity, quantified by the normalized friction coefficient $c_{f,ϕ}/c_{f,ϕ=0}$, shows a…
A general dispersion-dissipation condition for finite difference schemes is derived by analyzing the numerical dispersion and dissipation of explicit finite-difference schemes. The proper dissipation required to damp spurious high-wavenumber waves in the solution is determined from a physically motivated relation between group velocity and dissipation rate. The application to a previously developed low-dissipation weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme (WENO-CU6-M2) [X. Y. Hu and N. A. Adams; Scale separation for implicit large eddy simulation, J. Comput. Phys. 230 (2011) 7240-7249] demon…
We study a model for the evolution of an axially symmetric bubble of inviscid fluid in a homogeneous porous medium otherwise saturated with a viscous fluid. The model is a moving boundary problem that is a higher-dimensional analogue of Hele-Shaw flow. Here we are concerned with the development of pinch-off singularities characterised by a blow-up of the interface curvature and the bubble subsequently breaking up into two; these singularities do not occur in the corresponding two-dimensional Hele-Shaw problem. By applying a novel numerical scheme based on the level set method, we show that sol…
The entropy conservative/stable algorithm of Friedrich~\etal (2018) for hyperbolic conservation laws on nonconforming p-refined/coarsened Cartesian grids, is extended to curvilinear grids for the compressible Euler equations. The primary focus is on constructing appropriate coupling procedures across the curvilinear nonconforming interfaces. A simple and flexible approach is proposed that uses interpolation operators from one element to the other. On the element faces, the analytic metrics are used to construct coupling terms, while metric terms in the volume are approximated to satisfy a disc…
Several competing artificial compressibility methods for the incompressible flow equations are examined using the high-order flux reconstruction method. The established artificial compressibility method (ACM) of \citet{Chorin1967} is compared to the alternative entropically damped (EDAC) method of \citet{Clausen2013}, as well as an ACM formulation with hyperbolised diffusion. While the former requires the solution to be converged to a divergence free state at each physical time step through pseudo iterations, the latter can be applied explicitly. We examine the sensitivity of both methods to t…
We consider the motion of the interface separating a vacuum from an inviscid, incompressible, and irrotational fluid, subject to the self-gravitational force and neglecting surface tension, in two space dimensions. The fluid motion is described by the Euler-Poission system in moving bounded simply connected domains. A family of equilibrium solutions of the system are the perfect balls moving at constant velocity. We show that for smooth data which are small perturbations of size $ε$ of these static states, measured in appropriate Sobolev spaces, the solution exists and remains of size $ε$ on a…
The nonlinear evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is a popular test for code verification. To date, most Kelvin-Helmholtz problems discussed in the literature are ill-posed: they do not converge to any single solution with increasing resolution. This precludes comparisons among different codes and severely limits the utility of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability as a test problem. The lack of a reference solution has led various authors to assert the accuracy of their simulations based on ad-hoc proxies, e.g., the existence of small-scale structures. This paper proposes well-posed Kelv…
