In light of the improved sensitivities of cosmological observations, we examine the status of quasi-degenerate neutrino mass scenarios. Within the simplest extension of the standard cosmological model with massive neutrinos, we find that quasi-degenerate neutrinos are severely constrained by present cosmological data and neutrino oscillation experiments. % % We find that Planck 2018 observations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies disfavour quasi-degenerate neutrino masses at $2.4$ Gaussian $σ$'s, while adding Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data brings the rejection to 5.9$σ$'s. % The highest statistical significance with which one would be able to rule out quasi-degeneracy would arise if the sum of neutrino masses is $Σm_ν= 60$ \meV (the minimum allowed by neutrino oscillation experiments); % indeed a sensitivity of 15 meV, as expected from a combination of future cosmological probes, would further improve the rejection level up to 17$σ$. % We discuss the robustness of these projections with respect to assumptions on the underlying cosmological model, and also compare them with bounds from $β$ decay endpoint and neutrinoless double beta decay studies.
The hypothesis of a tiny fraction of the cosmic inventory evolving cosmologically as a degenerate Fermi gas test fluid at some dominant cosmological background is investigated. Our analytical results allow for performing preliminary computations to the evolution of perturbations for relativistic and non-relativistic test fluids. The density fluctuation, $δ$, the fluid velocity divergence, $θ$, and an explicit expression for the dynamics of the shear stress, $σ$, are obtained for a degenerate Fermi gas in the background regime of radiation. Extensions to the dominance of matter and to the $Λ$CD…
We present robust, model-marginalized limits on both the total neutrino mass ($\sum m_ν$) and abundance ($N_{\rm eff}$) to minimize the role of parameterizations, priors and models when extracting neutrino properties from cosmology. The cosmological observations we consider are CMB temperature fluctuation and polarization measurements, Supernovae Ia luminosity distances, BAO observations and determinations of the growth rate parameter from the Data Release 16 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV. The degenerate neutrino mass spectrum (which implies $\sum m_ν>0$) is weakly (moderately) preferred …
In this Thesis I discuss several recent results obtained using the CMB spectra measured by Planck and several other cosmological probes. Extensions of the $Λ$CDM model are studied, including the presence of an additional sterile neutrino (motivated by the short-baseline oscillation anomalies) and of a thermal axion. The degeneracies of the cosmological effects of these particles with the power spectrum of primordial perturbations are tested. We also show that the power spectrum of initial scalar perturbations can be degenerate with the presence of primordial non-Gaussianities, thus affecting t…
We study the impact of assumptions made about the neutrino mass ordering on cosmological parameter estimation with the purpose of understanding whether in the future it will be possible to infer the specific neutrino mass distribution from cosmological data. We find that although the commonly used assumption of a degenerate neutrino hierarchy is manifestly wrong and leads to changes in cosmological observables such as the cosmic microwave background and large scale structure compared to the correct (normal or inverted) neutrino hierarchy, the induced changes are so small that even with extreme…
We investigate further (cf. arXiv:1512.01199, JCAP01 (2016) 040) Starobinsky cosmological model $R+γR^2$ in the Palatini formalism with Chaplygin gas and baryonic matter as a source. For this aim we use dynamical system theory. The dynamics is reduced to the 2D sewn dynamical system of a Newtonian type (a piecewise-smooth dynamical system). We classify all evolutional paths in the model as well as trajectories in the phase space. We demonstrate the presence of a degenerate freeze singularity (glued freeze type singularities) for the positive $γ$. In this case it is a generic feature of early e…
The combination of current large scale structure and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data can place strong constraints on the sum of the neutrino masses. Here we show that future cosmic shear experiments, in combination with CMB constraints, can provide the statistical accuracy required to answer questions about differences in the mass of individual neutrino species. Allowing for the possibility that masses are non-degenerate we combine Fisher matrix forecasts for a weak lensing survey like Euclid with those for the forthcoming Planck experiment. Under the assumption that neutri…
Large surveys for Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies have been proposed as a new method for measuring clustering of the galaxy population at high redshift with the goal of determining cosmological parameters. However, Lyman-alpha radiative transfer effects may modify the observed clustering of LAE galaxies in a way that mimics gravitational effects, potentially reducing the precision of cosmological constraints. For example, the effect of the linear redshift-space distortion on the power spectrum of LAE galaxies is potentially degenerate with Lyman-alpha radiative transfer effects owing to th…
We identify a scalar-tensor model embedded in the Horndeski action whose cosmological background and linear scalar fluctuations are degenerate with the concordance cosmology. The model admits a self-accelerated background expansion at late times that is stable against perturbations with a sound speed attributed to the new field that is equal to the speed of light. While degenerate in scalar fluctuations, self-acceleration of the model implies a present cosmological tensor mode propagation at < 95% of the speed of light with a damping of the wave amplitude that is > 5% less efficient than in ge…
We use a suite of N-body simulations that incorporate massive neutrinos as an extra-set of particles to investigate their effect on the halo mass function. We show that for cosmologies with massive neutrinos the mass function of dark matter haloes selected using the spherical overdensity (SO) criterion is well reproduced by the fitting formula of Tinker et al. (2008) once the cold dark matter power spectrum is considered instead of the total matter power, as it is usually done. The differences between the two implementations, i.e. using $P_{\rm cdm}(k)$ instead of $P_{\rm m}(k)$, are more pron…
The cosmological constraints from the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich experiments are degenerate with the optical depth measurement, which is commonly known as the optical-depth degeneracy. In this work, we introduce a new statistic based on the first moment of relative velocity between pairs in a triplet, which is capable of constraining cosmological parameters independent of the optical depth, and $σ_8$. Using 22,000 $N$-body simulations from the Quijote suite, we quantify the information content in the new statistic using Fisher matrix forecast. We find that it is able to obtain strong constraint…
We investigate what role the SKA neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping (IM) sky survey observation will play in weighing neutrinos in cosmology. We use the simulated data of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements from the HI IM survey based on SKA1 and SKA2 to do the analysis. For the current observations, we use the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies observation, the optical BAO measurements, the type Ia supernovae (SN) observation (Pantheon compilation), and the latest $H_0$ measurement. We consider three mass ordering cases for massive neutrinos, i.e., …
In this work we update the bounds on $\sum m_ν$ from latest publicly available cosmological data and likelihoods using Bayesian analysis, while explicitly considering particular neutrino mass hierarchies. In the minimal $Λ\textrm{CDM}+\sum m_ν$ model with most recent CMB data from Planck 2018 TT,TE,EE, lowE, and lensing; and BAO data from BOSS DR12, MGS, and 6dFGS, we find that at 95\% C.L. the bounds are: $\sum m_ν<0.12$ eV (degenerate), $\sum m_ν<0.15$ eV (normal), $\sum m_ν<0.17$ eV (inverted). The bounds vary across the different mass orderings due to different priors on $\sum m_ν$. Also, …
We have previously presented a reconstruction of Horndeski scalar-tensor theories from linear cosmological observables. It includes free nonlinear terms which can be added onto the reconstructed covariant theory without affecting the background and linear dynamics. After discussing the uniqueness of these correction terms, we apply this nonlinear freedom to a range of different applications. First we demonstrate how the correction terms can be configured to endow the reconstructed models with screening mechanisms such as the chameleon, k-mouflage and Vainshtein effects. A further implication i…
We investigate the impacts of the gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren observation of the Einstein Telescope (ET) on constraining the total neutrino mass. We simulate 1000 GW events that would be observed by the ET in its 10-year observation by taking the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology as a fiducial model. We combine the simulated GW data with other cosmological observations including cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), and type Ia supernovae (SN). We consider three mass hierarchy cases for the neutrino mass, i.e., normal hierarchy (NH), inverted hierarchy (IH),…
Systematic errors in the galaxy redshift distribution $n(z)$ can propagate to systematic errors in the derived cosmology. We characterize how the degenerate effects in tomographic bin widths and galaxy bias impart systematic errors on cosmology inference using observational data from the Deep Lens Survey. For this we use a combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing. We present two end-to-end analyses from the catalogue level to parameter estimation. We produce an initial cosmological inference using fiducial tomographic redshift bins derived from photometric redshifts, then com…
Recently Kaloper, Kleban and Martin reexamined the McVittie solution and argued, contrary to a very widely held belief, that the solution contains a black hole in an expanding universe. Here we corroborate their main conclusion but go on to examine, in some detail, a specific solution that asymptotes to the $Λ$CDM cosmology. We show that part of the boundary of the solution contains the inner bifurcation two - sphere of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter spacetime and so both the black and white hole horizons together form a partial boundary of this McVittie solution. We go on to show that the null…
Gravitation is described in the context of a dilatonic theory that is conformally related to general relativity. All dimensionless ratios of fundamental dimensional quantities, e.g. particle masses and the Planck mass, as well as the relative strengths of the fundamental interactions, are fixed constants. An interplay between the positive energy density associated with relativistic matter (and possibly with negative spatial curvature) and the negative energy associated with dynamical dilaton phase results in a non-singular, flat cosmological model with no horizon, and -- as a direct consequenc…
We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar (QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to $z\sim7.5$, combined with type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed, extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE) evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard…

We study the impact of non-standard momentum distributions of cosmic neutrinos on the anisotropy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background and the matter power spectrum of the large scale structure. We show that the neutrino distribution has almost no unique observable imprint, as it is almost entirely degenerate with the effective number of neutrino flavours, $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$, and the neutrino mass, $m_ν$. Performing a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis with current cosmological data, we demonstrate that the neutrino mass bound heavily depends on the assumed momentum distribution of relic …
We investigate the possibility of performing cosmological studies in the redshift range $2.5<z<5$ through suitable extensions of existing and upcoming radio-telescopes like CHIME, HIRAX and FAST. We use the Fisher matrix technique to forecast the bounds that those instruments can place on the growth rate, the BAO distance scale parameters, the sum of the neutrino masses and the number of relativistic degrees of freedom at decoupling, $N_{\rm eff}$. We point out that quantities that depend on the amplitude of the 21cm power spectrum, like $fσ_8$, are completely degenerate with $Ω_{\rm HI}$ and …
We investigate a novel approach to measuring the Hubble constant using gravitational-wave (GW) signals from compact binaries by exploiting the narrowness of the distribution of masses of the underlying neutron-star population. Gravitational-wave observations with a network of detectors will permit a direct, independent measurement of the distance to the source systems. If the redshift of the source is known, these inspiraling double-neutron-star binary systems can be used as standard sirens to extract cosmological information. Unfortunately, the redshift and the system chirp mass are degenerat…
Gallium and short baseline reactor neutrino experiments indicate a short-distance anomalous disappearance of electron antineutrinos which, if interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillations, would lead to a sterile neutrino mass inconsistent with standard cosmological models. This anomaly is difficult to measure at 1 km baseline experiments because its disappearance effects are degenerate with that of theta_13. The flux normalization independent measurement of theta_13 at Daya Bay breaks this degeneracy, allowing an unambiguous differentiation of 1-3 neutrino oscillations and the anomalous disap…

Observations from Supernovae Type Ia (SNe Ia) provided strong evidence for an expanding accelerating Universe at intermediate redshifts. This means that the Universe underwent a transition from deceleration to acceleration phases at a transition redshift $z_t$ of the order unity whose value in principle depends on the cosmology as well as on the assumed gravitational theory. Since cosmological accelerating models endowed with a transition redshift are extremely degenerated, in principle, it is interesting to know whether the value of $z_t$ itself can be observationally used as a new cosmic dis…

The quest for the neutrino mass is a central goal in contemporary cosmology, subject to intense scrutiny, and among different large-scale structure tracers the Lyman-Alpha forest is re-emerging as a unique tool to probe the neutrino mass at high-redshift - through characteristic imprints on the transmitted Lyman-Alpha flux. A detailed modeling of the low-density regions of the intergalactic medium in presence of massive neutrinos on scale ranging from a few to hundreds of megaparsecs is required, if one wants to interpret state-of-the-art data from observations of quasar spectra. To this end, …
