The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a consistent framework for comparing precision measurements at the LHC to the Standard Model. The observation of statistically significant non-zero SMEFT coefficients would correspond to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) of some sort. A more difficult question to answer is what, if any, detailed information about the nature of the underlying high scale model can be obtained from these measurements. In this work, we consider the patterns of SMEFT operators present in five example models and discuss the assumptions inherent in using global fits to make BSM conclusions. We find that including renormalization group effects has a significant impact on the interpretation of the results. As a by-product of our study, we present an up-dated global fit to SMEFT coefficients in the Warsaw basis including some next-to-leading order QCD corrections in the SMEFT theory.
We perform global fits within Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) combining top-quark pair production processes and decay with $b\rightarrow s$ flavor changing neutral current transitions and $Z \to b \bar b$ in three stages: using existing data from the LHC and $B$-factories, using projections for the HL-LHC and Belle II, and studying the additional new physics impact from a future lepton collider. The latter is ideally suited to directly probe $\ell^+\ell^-\rightarrow t\bar t$ transitions. We observe powerful synergies in combining both top and beauty observables as flat directions…
We investigate the information that can be gained by including flavour data in fits of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with the assumption of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), allowing - as initial conditions at the high scale - leading terms in spurionic Yukawas only. Starting therefore from a theory with no tree level flavour changing neutral currents at the scale of new physics, we calculate effects in flavour changing processes at one loop, and the resulting constraints on linear combinations of SMEFT coefficients, consistently parameterising the electroweak parameters and…
I discuss recent progress on fits to dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT). I focus on the top quark sector of the SMEFT, as well as the theoretical advances made in computing SMEFT effects through to next-to-leading order in QCD and the use of these calculations in global fits. I also discuss fits performed to the Higgs and electroweak sectors of the SMEFT and the possibility for performing global fits to multiple sectors simultaneously.
We study the potential of future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) data to probe four-fermion operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The ability to perform measurements with both polarized electron and proton beams at the EIC provides a powerful tool that can disentangle the effects from different SMEFT operators. We compare the potential constraints from an EIC with those obtained from Drell-Yan data at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that EIC data plays an important complementary role since it probes combinations of Wilson coefficients not accessible through available D…
In these proceedings we present the latest developments in our effort to include vector boson scattering (VBS) measurements into global SMEFT fits of LHC data. We present some updates to our initial study of arXiv:2101.03180 as well as comment on a possible road map for the inclusion of higher orders beyond dimension 6 in the SMEFT and on the interpretation of VBS data in other EFT frameworks.
We present a global fit of Drell-Yan, top-quark and beauty-physics data in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework using the Minimal Flavor Violation ansatz for the quark-flavor structure. The different energy scales are thereby connected by applying the renormalization group equation and matching onto the Weak Effective Theory in order to incorporate $b\to s$ FCNCs at low energies into the fit. We find that the combination of the different sectors greatly improves the bounds on the Wilson coefficients.
The production of $W^{\pm}H$, $ZH$, $W^+W^-$, and $W^\pm Z$ pairs probes non-Standard-Model interactions of quarks, gauge bosons, and the Higgs boson. New effects can be parameterized in terms of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Lagrangian is expanded in terms of higher-dimension operators suppressed by increasing powers of a high scale $Λ$. We examine the importance of including next-to-leading-order QCD corrections in global fits to the coefficients of the EFT. The numerical implications on the fits due to different approaches to enforcing the validity of the EFT are quantified. We …
We investigate the role of anomalous gauge boson and fermion couplings on the production of $WZ$ and $W^+W^-$ pairs at the LHC to NLO QCD in the Standard Model effective field theory, including dimension-6 operators. Our results are implemented in a publicly available version of the POWHEG-BOX. We combine our $WZ$ results in the leptonic final state $eνμ^+μ^-$ with previous $W^+W^-$ results to demonstrate the numerical effects of NLO QCD corrections on the limits on effective couplings derived from ATLAS and CMS 8 and 13 TeV differential measurements. Our study demonstrates the importance of i…

We explore the impact of Renormalisation Group (RG) effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) interpretations of LHC measurements. We implement the RG running and mixing for the Wilson coefficients as obtained from the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the SMEFT into a Monte Carlo generator. This allows to consistently predict and combine in global fits collider observables characterised by different scales. As a showcase, we examine the impact of RG running in the strong coupling on the SMEFT predictions for $t \bar t$ production cross sections and differential distrib…
We study the inclusion of $\mathcal O(1/Λ^4)$ effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory in fits to the current Drell-Yan data at the LHC. Our analysis includes the full set of dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators contributing to the dilepton process, and is performed to next-to-leading-order in the QCD coupling constant at both $\mathcal O(1/Λ^2)$ and $\mathcal O(1/Λ^4)$. We find that the inclusion of dimension-6 squared terms and certain dimension-8 operators has significant effects on fits to the current data. Neglecting them leads to bounds on dimension-6 operators off by large …
In this work we address three questions: can we successfully describe (observed) deviations from the standard model in the SMEFT language? Can we learn something about the underlying, beyond the standard model, physics using the SMEFT language? If no deviation is observed, how to proceed? Given the myriad of viable BSM options with extended scalar sectors, we suggest a widespread use of SMEFT not just as a global fitting tool (that could miss out on deviations from extended scalar sectors) but also as a bookkeeping framework in which the results from SMEFT fits to individual observables are pr…

We calculate the double pole contribution to two to four fermion scattering through $W^{\pm}$ currents at tree level in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We assume all fermions to be massless, $\rm U(3)^5$ flavour and $\rm CP$ symmetry. Using this result, we update the global constraint picture on SMEFT parameters including LEPII data on these charged current processes, and also include modifications to our fit procedure motivated by a companion paper focused on $W^{\pm}$ mass extractions. The fit reported is now to 177 observables and emphasises the need for a consistent incl…
The extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix from flavour observables can be affected by physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). We provide a general roadmap to take this into account, which we apply to the case of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We choose a set of four input observables that determine the four Wolfenstein parameters, and discuss how the effects of dimension-six operators can be included in their definition. We provide numerical values and confidence intervals for the CKM parameters, and compare them with the results of CKM fits obtained in t…
We present a framework for carrying out global analyses of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory: SMEFiT. This approach is based on the Monte Carlo replica method, widely used in the case of NNPDF fits of the proton structure, for deriving a faithful estimate of the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. As a proof of concept of the SMEFiT methodology, we present a study of the constraints on the SMEFT provided by top quark production measurements from the LHC. We derive bounds for the 34 degrees of freedom relevant for the interpretation of the LHC top quark data and compare these bo…
We present the first analysis of top spin polarizations, $t \bar t$ spin correlations, and $t \bar t$ spin entanglement at the LHC in the context of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, that goes beyond Leading Order QCD accuracy. The complete set of independent dimension-6 operators entering $t \bar t$ production is identified, and their effects on all top spin observables are extracted at linear and quadratic order in $c/Λ^2$. By comparing results at LO and NLO, we note that the inclusion of higher orders, while not dramatically changing the picture, often amounts to notable numerical …
We present a global interpretation of Higgs, diboson, and top quark production and decay measurements from the LHC in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) at dimension six. We constrain simultaneously 36 independent directions in its parameter space, and compare the outcome of the global analysis with that from individual and two-parameter fits. Our results are obtained by means of state-of-the-art theoretical calculations for the SM and the EFT cross-sections, and account for both linear and quadratic corrections in the $1/Λ^2$ expansion. We demonstrate how the i…

The study of Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum is one of the new frontiers for the LHC Higgs physics programme. This paper considers boosted Higgs production in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We focus on the gluon fusion and $t{\bar t}H$ production processes and study the effects of three dimension-6 operators: the top Yukawa operator, the gluon-Higgs effective coupling and the chromomagnetic dipole operator of the top quark. We perform a detailed study of the sensitivity of current and future LHC data to the corresponding Wilson coefficients, consistently…
The energy asymmetry in top-antitop-jet production is an observable of the top charge asymmetry designed for the LHC. We perform a realistic analysis in the boosted kinematic regime, including effects of the parton shower, hadronization and expected experimental uncertainties. Our predictions at particle level show that the energy asymmetry in the Standard Model can be measured with a significance of $3σ$ during Run 3, and with more than $5σ$ significance at the HL-LHC. Beyond the Standard Model the energy asymmetry is a sensitive probe of new physics with couplings to top quarks. In the frame…
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have recently released significant new data on Higgs and diboson production in LHC Run 2. Measurements of Higgs properties have improved in many channels, while kinematic information for $h \to γγ$ and $h \to ZZ$ can now be more accurately incorporated in fits using the STXS method, and $W^+ W^-$ diboson production at high $p_T$ gives new sensitivity to deviations from the Standard Model. We have performed an updated global fit to precision electroweak data, $W^+W^-$ measurements at LEP, and Higgs and diboson data from Runs 1 and 2 of the LHC in the framework o…
This report presents the results of the Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup of the Off-Shell Interpretations Task Force in the LHC Higgs Working Group. The main goal of the subgroup was to discuss and advance the potential impact of off-shell Higgs measurements on searches for BSM physics carried out in the EFT framework or as benchmark model studies. In the first contribution, the off-shell potential to resolve flat directions in parameter space for on-shell measurements is studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of off-shell measurements to SMEFT dimension-6 operators for the gg $\to$…
We present a first, consistent combination of measurements from top-quark and $B$ physics to constrain top-quark properties within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of this approach and detail the ingredients required for a proper combination of observables from different energy scales. Specifically, we employ measurements of the $t\bar tγ$ cross section together with measurements of the $\bar B\rightarrow X_sγ$ branching fraction to test the Standard Model and look for new physics contributions to the couplings of the top quark to t…
The LHC experiments have searched for and excluded many proposed Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories. However, there are many scenarios where LHC has little or no sensitivity. Electron-positron colliders offers a different avenue for searches for such phenomena. In this talk, we will review the expectations for searches for number of BSM models at the International Linear Collider (ILC). We will discuss new Higgs-like scalars, indirect BSM via Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) fits, mono-photons, and SUSY in strongly or moderately compressed models.
We reassess non-standard triple gauge couplings in the light of the recent $(g-2)_μ$ measurement at FNAL, the new lattice theory result of $(g-2)_μ$ and the updated measurements of several $B$-decay modes. In the framework of SMEFT, three bosonic dimension-6 operators are invoked to parametrize physics beyond the Standard Model and their contributions to such low-energy observables computed. Constraints on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are then derived from fits to the current experimental bounds on the observables and compared with the most stringent ones available from the 13 TeV LHC…
