The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) offers a systematic approach to study potential deviations from the Standard Model (SM) through higher-dimensional operators that encapsulate new physics effects. In this work, we analyze flavour-blind SMEFT contributions to flavour observables and assess their interplay with high-energy measurements from LEP and LHC. We perform global fits combining LEP precision data, flavour observables from rare B-meson decays, and LHC diboson measurements, revealing how the inclusion of different datasets breaks parameter degeneracies and enhances the sensitivity to SMEFT coefficients. Our study demonstrates that low-energy flavour observables provide reliable constraints even in flavour-blind scenarios, while high-energy measurements can be subject to EFT validity concerns due to kinematic growth. We investigate the impact of renormalization group evolution (RGE) and operator mixing across energy scales, highlighting the complementary nature of low- and high-energy datasets. The results emphasize the importance of flavour observables as robust probes of new physics and underline the necessity of global fits to avoid potential biases from limited datasets. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the interpretation of global SMEFT analyses based on high-energy collider data, comparing UV models that contribute to SMEFT at tree- and loop-level.
I discuss recent progress on fits to dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT). I focus on the top quark sector of the SMEFT, as well as the theoretical advances made in computing SMEFT effects through to next-to-leading order in QCD and the use of these calculations in global fits. I also discuss fits performed to the Higgs and electroweak sectors of the SMEFT and the possibility for performing global fits to multiple sectors simultaneously.
This note gives an overview of the tools for the precision matching of ultraviolet theories to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop. Several semi- and fully automated codes are presented, as well as some supplementary codes for the basis conversion and the subsequent running and matching at low energies. A suggestion to collect information for cross-validations of current and future codes is made.
There are two canonical approaches to treating the Standard Model as an Effective Field Theory (EFT): Standard Model EFT (SMEFT), expressed in the electroweak symmetric phase utilizing the Higgs doublet, and Higgs EFT (HEFT), expressed in the broken phase utilizing the physical Higgs boson and an independent set of Goldstone bosons. HEFT encompasses SMEFT, so understanding whether SMEFT is sufficient motivates identifying UV theories that require HEFT as their low energy limit. This distinction is complicated by field redefinitions that obscure the naive differences between the two EFTs. By re…
Effective Field Theories are an established framework to bridge the gap between UV and low energy theories. In the context of the Standard Model, the bottom-up approach extends its operator set and thus equips us to astutely probe its observables while encapsulating indirect evidence of unknown high scale theories. While the top-down approach, on the other hand, employs functional techniques to integrate out the heavy fields from a BSM Lagrangian leading to a set of SMEFT operators. An intricate interplay of the two approaches enhances the efficacy of the SMEFT in making meaningful predictions…
We present a study of the interplay between PDF and EFT effects in high-mass Drell-Yan at the LHC. We quantify the impact of a consistent joint determination of the PDFs and Wilson coefficients on the bounds obtained on the EFT and examine the effect on the PDFs, determining the extent to which EFT signals could be reabsorbed into the large-$x$ quark and anti-quark PDFs. Finally, we present dedicated projections for the High-Luminosity LHC and evaluate its ultimate potential to constrain the EFT parameters, while taking into account potential modifications of the proton structure.
We present a systematic interpretation of vector boson scattering (VBS) and diboson measurements from the LHC in the framework of the dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We consider all available measurements of VBS fiducial cross-sections and differential distributions from ATLAS and CMS, in most cases based on the full Run II luminosity, and use them to constrain 16 independent directions in the dimension-six EFT parameter space. Compared to the diboson measurements, we find that VBS provides complementary information on several of the operators relevant for the desc…
In recent times, SMEFT, along with a superlative repertoire of theoretical and computational tools, has emerged as an efficacious platform to test the viability of proposed BSM scenarios. With symmetry as the backbone, higher mass dimensional ($\geq 5$) SMEFT operators constitute the \textit{lingua franca} for studying and comparing the direct or indirect effects of UV models on low energy observables. The steady increase in the accessible energy scales for contemporary particle collision experiments prompts us to inspect effective operators beyond the leading order and investigate their measu…
An Effective Field Theory (EFT) analysis of the magnetic moment of the muon is discussed. The expression for the dipole moment is given in terms of operator coefficients of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) and the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), where one-loop renormalization group improved perturbation theory, the one-loop matching from SMEFT onto LEFT as well as one-loop lepton matrix elements of the effective-theory operators were taken into account. Interestingly only a very limited set of the SMEFT operators is able to explain the current deviation of the magnet…
The standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) provides systematic parameterization of all possible new physics above the electroweak scale. According to the amplitude-operator correspondence, an effective operator can be decomposed into a linear combination of several j-basis operators, which correspond to local amplitudes carrying certain spin and gauge quantum numbers in a particular scattering channel. Based on the Poincare and gauge symmetries of scattering amplitude, we construct the j-basis using the Casimir method for both the Lorentz and gauge sectors. The quantum numbers of the j-…

The production of $W^{\pm}H$, $ZH$, $W^+W^-$, and $W^\pm Z$ pairs probes non-Standard-Model interactions of quarks, gauge bosons, and the Higgs boson. New effects can be parameterized in terms of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Lagrangian is expanded in terms of higher-dimension operators suppressed by increasing powers of a high scale $Λ$. We examine the importance of including next-to-leading-order QCD corrections in global fits to the coefficients of the EFT. The numerical implications on the fits due to different approaches to enforcing the validity of the EFT are quantified. We …
One-loop corrections to $h\to b\bar b$ and $h\to τ\bar τ$ decays in the Standard Model Dimension-6 EFT: four-fermion operators and the large-$m_t$ limit
The high-energy tails of charged- and neutral-current Drell-Yan processes provide important constraints on the light quark and anti-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the large-x region. At the same time, short-distance new physics effects such as those encoded by the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) would induce smooth distortions to the same high-energy Drell-Yan tails. In this work, we assess for the first time the interplay between PDFs and EFT effects for high-mass Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and quantify the impact that the consistent joint determination of PDF…
This report presents the results of the Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup of the Off-Shell Interpretations Task Force in the LHC Higgs Working Group. The main goal of the subgroup was to discuss and advance the potential impact of off-shell Higgs measurements on searches for BSM physics carried out in the EFT framework or as benchmark model studies. In the first contribution, the off-shell potential to resolve flat directions in parameter space for on-shell measurements is studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of off-shell measurements to SMEFT dimension-6 operators for the gg $\to$…

The LHC effective field theory working group gathers members of the LHC experiments and the theory community to provide a framework for the interpretation of LHC data in the context of EFT. In this note we discuss experimental observables and corresponding measurements in analysis of the Higgs, top, and electroweak data at the LHC. We review the relationship between operators and measurements relevant for the interpretation of experimental data in the context of a global SMEFT analysis. One of the goals of ongoing effort is bridging the gap between theory and experimental communities working o…
Projecting measurements of the interactions of the known Standard Model (SM) states into an effective field theory (EFT) framework is an important goal of the LHC physics program. The interpretation of measurements of the properties of the Higgs-like boson in an EFT allows one to consistently study the properties of this state, while the SM is allowed to eventually break down at higher energies. In this review, basic concepts relevant to the construction of such EFTs are reviewed pedagogically. Electroweak precision data is discussed as a historical example of some importance to illustrate cri…
The shift in focus towards searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) employing model-independent Effective Field Theory (EFT) methods necessitates a rigorous approach to matching to guarantee the validity of the obtained results and constraints. The limits on the leading dimension-six EFT effects can be rather inaccurate for LHC searches that suffer from large uncertainties while exploring an extensive energy range. Similarly, precise measurements can, in principle, test the subleading effects of the operator expansion. In this work, we present an algorithmic approach to automatise m…
We present a parton-level study of electro-weak production of vector-boson pairs at the Large Hadron Collider, establishing the sensitivity to a set of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Different final states are statistically combined, and we discuss how the orthogonality and interdependence of different analyses must be considered to obtain the most stringent constraints. The main novelties of our study are the inclusion of SMEFT effects in non-resonant diagrams and in irreducible QCD backgrounds, and an exhaustive template analysis of optimal obse…
Vector boson scatterings are fundamental processes to shed light on the nature of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. Deviations from the Standard Model predictions on the corresponding observables can be interpreted in terms of effective field theories, that however undergo consistency conditions. In this paper, the same-sign W W scattering is considered within the HEFT context and the correct usage of the effective field theory approach is discussed. Regions of the parameters space are identified where a signal of new physics could be measured at HL-LHC with a significance of more t…
We present a global interpretation of Higgs, diboson, and top quark production and decay measurements from the LHC in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) at dimension six. We constrain simultaneously 36 independent directions in its parameter space, and compare the outcome of the global analysis with that from individual and two-parameter fits. Our results are obtained by means of state-of-the-art theoretical calculations for the SM and the EFT cross-sections, and account for both linear and quadratic corrections in the $1/Λ^2$ expansion. We demonstrate how the i…
The energy asymmetry in top-antitop-jet production is an observable of the top charge asymmetry designed for the LHC. We perform a realistic analysis in the boosted kinematic regime, including effects of the parton shower, hadronization and expected experimental uncertainties. Our predictions at particle level show that the energy asymmetry in the Standard Model can be measured with a significance of $3σ$ during Run 3, and with more than $5σ$ significance at the HL-LHC. Beyond the Standard Model the energy asymmetry is a sensitive probe of new physics with couplings to top quarks. In the frame…
In this paper we systematically consider the baryon ($B$) and lepton ($L$) number violating dinucleon to dilepton decays ($pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime+}, pn\to \ell^+\barν^\prime, nn\to \barν\barν^\prime$) with $ΔB=ΔL=-2$ in the framework of effective field theory. We start by constructing a basis of dimension-12 (dim-12) operators mediating such processes in the low energy effective field theory (LEFT) below the electroweak scale. Then we consider their standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) completions upwards and their chiral realizations in baryon chiral perturbation theory (B$χ$PT) do…
We report a set of exact formulae for computing Dirac masses, mixings, and CP-violation parameter(s) from 3$\times$3 Yukawa matrices $Y$ valid when $Y Y^\dagger \rightarrow U^\dagger \,Y Y^\dagger \, U$ under global $U(3)_{Q_L}$ flavour symmetry transformations $U$. The results apply to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) and its `geometric' realization (geoSMEFT). We thereby complete, in the Dirac flavour sector, the catalogue of geoSMEFT parameters derived at all orders in the $\sqrt{2 \langle H^\dagger H \rangle} / Λ$ expansion. The formalism is basis-independent, and can be a…
Recognizing the potential of effective field theories to posit multiple BSM scenarios in similar footing, with a possibility to compare them, we inspect the effects of 11 single scalar-multiplet extensions of the SM on the combined set of electroweak precision observables and Higgs signal strength data, by systematically integrating out the heavy multiplets and computing the resulting SMEFT operators and Wilson coefficients (WCs) up to one-loop level. Noting that multiple BSM models give rise to a degenerate set of WCs, we then perform Bayesian statistical inference both directly on the BSM pa…
We consider the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$, which shows a significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation given the recent measurements at Fermilab and BNL. We focus on Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with the aim to identify avenues for the upcoming LHC runs and future experiments such as MUonE. To this end, we include radiative effects to $a_μ$ in SMEFT to connect the muon anomaly to potentially interesting searches at the LHC, specifically Higgs decays into muon pairs and such decays with resolved photons. Our investigation shows that similar to resu…
