We have obtained imaging data in two photometric bands, g and r, for a sample of 42 isolated lenticular galaxies with the Las Cumbres Observatory one-meter telescope network. We have analyzed the structure of their large-scale stellar disks. The parameters of surface brightness distributions have been determined including the radial profile shapes and disk thicknesses. After inspecting the radial brightness profiles, all the galaxies have been classified into pure exponential (Type I), truncated (Type II), and antitruncated (Type III) disks. By comparing the derived statistics of the radial profiles shapes with our previous sample of the cluster S0s, we noted a prominent difference between stellar disks of S0s galaxies in quite rarefied environments and in clusters: it is only in sparse environments that Type II disks, with profile truncations, can be found. This finding implies probable different dynamical history of S0 galaxies in different environments.
By combining new long-slit spectral data obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) for 9 galaxies with previously published our observations for additional 12 galaxies we study the stellar and gaseous kinematics as well as radially resolved stellar population properties and ionized gas metallicity and excitation for a sample of isolated lenticular galaxies. We have found that there is no particular time frame of formation for the isolated lenticular galaxies: the mean stellar ages of the bulges and disks are distributed between 1 and > 13 Gyr, and the bulge and the disk in ever…
In this paper we present the results of long-slit spectral observations for a sample of isolated lenticular galaxies, made with the SCORPIO and SCORPIO-2 spectrographs of the 6-meter BTA telescope of the SAO RAS. By applying full spectral fitting technique using the stellar population evolutionary synthesis models, we have measured the radial profiles of the stellar line-of-sight velocity as well as the velocity dispersion, SSP-equivalent age and SSP-equivalent metallicity of stars along the radius in 12 targets. The resulting averaged ages of the stellar population in bulges and discs cover a…
I analyze statistics of the stellar population properties for stellar nuclei and bulges of nearby lenticular galaxies in different environments by using panoramic spectral data of the integral-field spectrograph SAURON retrieved from the open archive of Isaac Newton Group. I estimate also the fraction of nearby lenticular galaxies having inner polar gaseous disks by exploring the volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies of the ATLAS-3D survey. By inspecting the two-dimensional velocity fields of the stellar and gaseous components with running tilted-ring technique, I have found 7 new cases…
Lenticular galaxies are generally thought to have descended from spirals via morphological transformation, although recent numerical simulations have shown that minor or even major merger can also lead to an S0-like remnant. These mechanisms, however, are active in a dense environment such as a group or a cluster of galaxies - making it harder to explain the remarkable fraction of S0s found in the field. Here, we propose a new mechanism to form such lenticular galaxies. We show that an isolated cold disk settled into rotational equilibrium becomes violently unstable - leading to fragmentation …
Long slit spectra recorded with GMOS on Gemini South are used to examine the star-forming history of the lenticular galaxy NGC 5102. Structural and supplemental photometric information are obtained from archival Spitzer [3.6] images. Comparisons with model spectra point to luminosity-weighted metallicities that are consistent with the colors of resolved red giant branch stars in the disk. The nucleus has a luminosity-weighted age at visible wavelengths of ~1 Gyr, and the integrated light is dominated by stars that formed over a time period of only a few hundred Myr. For comparison, the luminos…
By obtaining imaging data in two photometric bands for 60 lenticular galaxies - members of 8 southern clusters - with the Las Cumbres Observatory one-meter telescope network, we have analyzed the structure of their large-scale stellar disks. The parameters of radial surface-brightness profiles have been determined (including also disk thickness), and all the galaxies have been classified into pure exponential (Type I) disk surface-brightness profiles, truncated (Type II) and antitruncated (Type III) piecewise exponential disk surface-brightness profiles. We confirm the previous results of some…
This work is dedicated to investigation of galaxies that do not fit into a common scenario of galaxy formation - isolated lenticular galaxies. We have studied stellar populations and ionized gas content of a sample of 22 lenticular galaxies (among those 4 targets have appeared to be of erroneous morphological classification) by undertaking deep long-slit spectroscopy with the Russian 6-m telescope and with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). The obtained average ages of the stellar populations in bulges and discs covers a wide range between 1.5 and >15 Gyr, that indicates the absence …
We present a photometric study of the field lenticular galaxy NGC 4546 using Gemini/GMOS imaging in g'r'i'z'. We perform a 2D image decomposition of the surface brightness distribution of the galaxy using GALFIT, finding that four components adequately describe it. The subtraction of this model from our images and the construction of a colour map allow us to examine in great detail the asymmetric dust structures around the galactic centre. In addition, we perform a detailed analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of NGC 4546. Using a Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm in the colour-colour p…
We present a catalog of the 1525 most optically luminous galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with r-band luminosity L_r > 8L* and redshift z<0.3, including 84 super spirals, 15 super lenticulars, 14 super post-merger galaxies, and 1400 giant ellipticals. With mass in stars of 10^{11.3}-10^{12} M_sun, super spirals and lenticulars are the most massive disk galaxies currently known. The specific star formation rates of super spirals place them on or below the star-forming main sequence. They must have formed stars at a high rate throughout their history in order to grow their massi…
Globular clusters (GCs) can be considered discrete, long-lived, dynamical tracers that retain crucial information about the assembly history of their parent galaxy. In this paper, we present a new catalogue of GC velocities and colours for the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023, we study their kinematics and spatial distribution, in comparison with the underlying stellar kinematics and surface brightness profile, and we test a new method for studying GC properties. Specifically, we decompose the galaxy light into its spheroid (assumed to represent the bulge + halo components) and disk components and u…

This is a historical review covering the last 30 years of the observational study of lenticular galaxies at the 6m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The development of spectroscopic techniques at the BTA has allowed to get comprehensive information about this class of stellar systems, starting from the study of their nuclei in the late 80th towards quite exclusive results obtained in the last years on the outermost parts of their large-scale stellar disks.
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of three S0-Sa galaxies: NGC338, NGC 3245, and NGC 5440 at the SAO RAS 6-m BTA telescope. The radial distributions of the line-of-sight velocities and radial velocity dispersions of stars and ionized gas were obtained, and rotation curves of galaxies were computed. We construct the numerical dynamic N-body galaxy models with N > 10^6 point masses. The models include three components: a "live" bulge, a collisionless disk, dynamically evolving to the marginally stable state, and a pseudo-isothermal dark halo. The estimates of radial velocities…
Rings in S0s are enigmatic features which can however betray the evolutionary paths of particular galaxies. We have undertaken long-slit spectroscopy of five lenticular galaxies with UV-bright outer rings. The observations have been made with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) to reveal the kinematics, chemistry, and the ages of the stellar populations and the gas characteristics in the rings and surrounding disks. Four of the five rings are also bright in the H-alpha emission line, and the spectra of the gaseous rings extracted around the maxima of the H-alpha equivalent width reveal…
Gas stripping of spiral galaxies or mergers are thought to be the formation mechanisms of lenticular galaxies. In order to determine the conditions in which each scenario dominates, we derive stellar populations of both the bulge and disk regions of 279 lenticular galaxies in the MaNGA survey. We find a clear bimodality in stellar age and metallicity within the population of S0s and this is strongly correlated with stellar mass. Old and metal-rich bulges and disks belong to massive galaxies, and young and metal-poor bulges and disks are hosted by low-mass galaxies. From this we conclude that t…
We present results of long-slit and panoramic spectroscopy of extended gaseous disks in 18 nearby S0 galaxies, mostly in groups. The gas in our S0s is found to be often accreted from outside that is implied by its decoupled kinematics: at least 5 galaxies demonstrate strongly inclined large-scale ionized-gas disks smoothly coupled with their outer HI disks, 7 galaxies reveal circumnuclear polar ionized-gas disks, and in NGC 2551 the ionized gas though confined to the main galactic plane however counterrotates the stellar component. The ionized-gas excitation analysis reveals the gas ionization…
Using $N$-body+SPH simulations of galaxies falling into a cluster, we study the evolution of their radial density profiles. When evolved in isolation, galaxies develop a type~II (down-bending) profile. In the cluster, the evolution of the profile depends on the minimum cluster-centric radius the galaxy reaches, which controls the degree of ram pressure stripping. If the galaxy falls to $\sim 50\%$ of the virial radius, then the profile remains type~II, but if the galaxy reaches down to $\sim 20\%$ of the virial radius the break weakens and the profile becomes more type~I like. The velocity dis…
Rotation curves have traditionally been difficult to trace for early-type galaxies (ETGs) because they often lack a high-density disk of cold gas as in late-type galaxies (LTGs). We derive rotation curves for three lenticular galaxies from the ATLAS3D survey, combining CO data in the inner parts with deep HI data in the outer regions, extending out to 10-20 effective radii. We also use Spitzer photometry at 3.6 um to decompose the rotation curves into the contributions of baryons and dark matter (DM). We find that (1) the rotation-curve shapes of these ETGs are similar to those of LTGs of simi…
We present a combination of the Schwarzschild orbit-superposition dynamical modelling technique with the spatially-resolved mean stellar age and metallicity maps to uncover the formation history of galaxies. We apply this new approach to a remarkable 5-pointing mosaic of VLT/MUSE observations obtained by Guérou et al. (2016) extending to a maximum galactocentric distance of $120''$ ($\sim 5.6\ {\rm kpc}$) along the major axis, corresponding to $\sim 2.5\ {\rm R}_e$. Our method first identifies `families' of orbits from the dynamical model that represent dynamically-distinct structures of the g…
We present a study on the dwarf lenticular galaxy MCG+08-22-082 (U141) located in the Ursa Major cluster, which is blue centered, double cored, and has a boxy appearance. Using publicly available data from the SDSS, we perform an analysis of structural and stellar population properties of the galaxy and the cores. We find that the light profile of U141 follows an exponential law. U141 has a brightness Mr = -16.01 mag, and an effective radius Re = 1.7 kpc. The boxiness parameter, a4/a, is mostly between 0 and -0.05 in the inner parts, reaching an extreme of about -0.1. Double cores are seen at …
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) regulates the baryonic cycle within galaxies, and is a key ingredient to translate observations into physical quantities. Although for decades it was assumed to be universal, there is now growing observational evidence showing that the center of massive early-type galaxies host an enhanced population of low-mass stars compared to the expectations from the Milky Way. Moreover, these variations in the IMF have been found to be related to the radial metallicity variations in massive galaxies. We present here a two-dimensional stellar population analysis of …
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) residing in the centers of galaxy clusters are typically quenched giant ellipticals. A recent study hinted that star-forming galaxies with large disks, so-called superluminous spirals and lenticulars, are the BCGs of a subset of galaxy clusters. Based on the existing optical data it was not possible to constrain whether the superluminous disk galaxies reside at the center of galaxy clusters. In this work, we utilize XMM-Newton X-ray observations of five galaxy clusters to map the morphology of the intracluster medium (ICM), characterize the galaxy clusters, de…
We provide evidence that UGC1382, long believed to be a passive elliptical galaxy, is actually a giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxy which rivals the archetypical GLSB Malin 1 in size. Like other GLSB galaxies, it has two components: a high surface brightness disk galaxy surrounded by an extended low surface brightness (LSB) disk. For UGC1382, the central component is a lenticular system with an effective radius of 6 kpc. Beyond this, the LSB disk has an effective radius of ~38 kpc and an extrapolated central surface brightness of ~26 mag/arcsec^2. Both components have a combined stella…
The origin of star-formation in customarily passively evolving early-type massive galaxies is poorly understood. We present a case study of a massive galaxy, I~Zw~81, inside the Bootes void. The void galaxy is known to host an active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our detailed 2D decomposition of the surface brightness distribution in the $Canada$ $France$ $Hawaii$ $Telescope$ ($CFHT$) g- and r-bands revealed multiple structural components such as a nuclear point source, a bar, a ring, and an inner exponential disk followed by an outer low surface brightness (LSB) disk. I~Zw~81 turns out to be a disk-…
Abridged for arXiv: In this work, we apply a powerful new technique in order to observationally derive accurate assembly histories through a self-consistent combined stellar dynamical and population galaxy model. We present this approach for three edge-on lenticular galaxies from the Fornax3D project -- FCC 153, FCC 170, and FCC 177 -- in order to infer their mass assembly histories individually and in the context of the Fornax cluster. The method was tested on mock data from simulations to quantify its reliability. We find that the galaxies studied here have all been able to form dynamically-…
Counter-rotating galaxies host two components rotating in opposite directions with respect to each other. The kinematic and morphological properties of lenticulars and spirals hosting counter-rotating components are reviewed. Statistics of the counter-rotating galaxies and analysis of their stellar populations provide constraints on the formation scenarios which include both environmental and internal processes.
We suggest and verify a new photometric method enabling derivation of relative thickness of a galactic disk from two-dimensional surface-brightness distribution of the galaxy in the plane of the sky. The method is applied to images of 45 early-type (S0-Sb) galaxies with known radial exponential or double-exponential (with a flatter outer profile) surface-brightness distributions. The data in the r-band have been retrieved from the SDSS archive. Statistics of the estimated relative thicknesses of the stellar disks of early-type disk galaxies shows the following features. The disks of lenticular…
It is well established that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), residing in the center of galaxy clusters, are typically massive and quenched galaxies with cD or elliptical morphology. An optical survey suggested that an exotic galaxy population, superluminous spiral and lenticular galaxies could be the BCGs of some galaxy clusters. Because the cluster membership and the centroid of a cluster cannot be accurately determined based solely on optical data, we followed up a sample of superluminous disk galaxies and their environment using XMM-Newton X-ray observations. Specifically, we explored sev…
We study the magnetic field evolution of an isolated spiral galaxy, using isolated Milky Way-mass galaxy formation simulations and a novel prescription for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) supernova feedback. Our main result is that a galactic dynamo can be seeded and driven by supernova explosions, resulting in magnetic fields whose strength and morphology is consistent with observations. In our model, supernovae supply thermal energy, and a low level magnetic field along with their ejecta. The thermal expansion drives turbulence, which serves a dual role by efficiently mixing the magnetic field int…

The classification of galaxy mergers and isolated disks is key for understanding the relative importance of galaxy interactions and secular evolution during the assembly of galaxies. The kinematic properties of galaxies as traced by emission lines have been used to suggest the existence of a significant population of high-z star-forming galaxies consistent with isolated rotating disks. However, recent studies have cautioned that post-coalescence mergers may also display disk-like kinematics. To further investigate the robustness of merger/disk classifications based on kinematic properties, we …
Despite numerous efforts, it is still unclear whether lenticular galaxies (S0s) evolve from spirals whose star formation was suppressed, or formed trough mergers or disk instabilities. In this paper we present a pilot study of 21 S0 galaxies in extreme environments (field and cluster), and compare their spatially-resolved kinematics and global stellar populations. Our aim is to identify whether there are different mechanisms that form S0s in different environments. Our results show that the kinematics of S0 galaxies in field and cluster are, indeed, different. Lenticulars in the cluster are mo…
Multi-band images of the very isolated spiral galaxy NGC 5523 show a number of unusual features consistent with NGC 5523 having experienced a significant merger: (1) Near-infrared (NIR) images from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the WIYN 3.5-m telescope reveal a nucleated bulge-like structure embedded in a spiral disk. (2) The bulge is offset by ~1.8 kpc from a brightness minimum at the center of the optically bright inner disk. (3) A tidal stream, possibly associated with an ongoing satellite interaction, extends from the nucleated bulge along the disk. We interpret these properties as…

Flattened bulges with disk-like properties are considered to be the end product of secular evolution processes at work in the inner regions of galaxies. On the contrary, classical bulges are characterized by rounder shapes and thought to be similar to low-luminosity elliptical galaxies. We aim at testing the variety of observational diagnostics which are commonly adopted to separate classical from disk-like bulges in nearby galaxies. We select a sample of eight unbarred lenticular galaxies to be morphologically and kinematically undisturbed with no evidence of other components than bulge and d…
The nucleus of our nearest, large galactic neighbor, M31, contains an eccentric nuclear disk--a disk of stars on eccentric, apsidally-aligned orbits around a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Previous studies of eccentric nuclear disks considered only an isolated disk, and did not study their dynamics under galaxy mergers (particularly a perturbing SMBH). Here, we present the first study of how eccentric disks are affected by a galactic merger. We perform N-body simulations to study the disk under a range of different possible SMBH initial conditions. A second SMBH in the disk always disrupts it…
Faint extended elliptically-shaped ultra-diffuse galaxies and slightly brighter and more compact dwarf elliptical and lenticular stellar systems are common in galaxy clusters. Their poorly constrained evolutionary paths can be studied by identifying young ultra-diffuse galaxy and dwarf elliptical analogs populated with bright, massive stars. Using data mining we identified 11 such low-mass ($2\times10^8<M_*<2\times10^9 M_{\odot}$) galaxies with large half-light radii ($2.0<r_e<5$ kpc) and recently quenched star formation in the Coma and Abell 2147 galaxy clusters. All galaxies happen to have r…
We study various implementations of supernova feedback model and present the results of our `Osaka feedback model' using isolated galaxy simulations performed by the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code {\small GADGET-3}. Our model is a modified version of Stinson et al.'s work, and we newly add the momentum kick for SN feedback rather than only thermal feedback. We incorporate the physical properties of SN remnants from the results of Chevalier and McKee \& Ostriker, such as the effective radius of SN bubble and the remnant life-time, in the form of Sedov-Taylor (ST)-like solutions with…
Selected from a sample of nine, isolated, dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) having the same range of kinematic properties as dwarf ETGs in clusters, we use CG 611 (LEDA 2108986) to address the Nature versus Nurture debate regarding the formation of dwarf ETGs. The presence of faint disk structures and rotation within some cluster dwarf ETGs has often been heralded as evidence that they were once late-type spiral or dwarf irregular galaxies prior to experiencing a cluster-induced transformation into an ETG. However, CG 611 also contains significant stellar rotation (~20 km/s) over its inner half…
We use a suite of numerical simulations to investigate the mechanisms and effects of radial migration of stars in disk galaxies like the Milky Way (MW). An isolated, collisionless stellar disk with a MW-like scale-height shows only the radial "blurring" expected from epicyclic orbits. Reducing the disk thickness or adding gas to the disk substantially increases the level of radial migration, induced by interaction with transient spiral arms and/or a central bar. We also examine collisionless disks subjected to gravitational perturbations from a cosmologically motivated satellite accretion hist…

HI kinematic asymmetries are common in late-type galaxies irrespective of environment, although the amplitudes are strikingly low in isolated galaxies. As part of our studies of the HI morphology and kinematics in isolated late-type galaxies we have chosen several very isolated galaxies from the AMIGA sample for HI mapping. Here we present GMRT 21-cm HI line mapping of CIG 340 which was selected because its integrated HI spectrum has a very symmetric profile, Aflux = 1.03. Optical images of the galaxy hinted at a warped disk in contrast to the symmetric integrated HI spectrum profile. Our aim …
We present the integral-field kinematics and stellar population properties of 64 galaxies (61 are Early-Type galaxies, ETGs) with Counter-Rotating stellar Disks (CRD) selected from about 4000 galaxies in the MaNGA survey, based on evidence of counter-rotation or two velocity dispersion peaks in the kinematic maps. For 17 CRDs, the counter-rotating components can also be separated spectroscopically. The frequency of CRDs in MaNGA is <5% for ellipticals, <3% for lenticulars and <1% for spirals (at 95% confidence level), consistent with previous estimates. We produced age and metallicity maps, an…
We explore stellar population properties separately in the bulge and the disk of double-component cluster galaxies to shed light on the formation of lenticular galaxies in dense environments. We study eight low-redshift clusters from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field (SAMI) Galaxy Survey, using 2D photometric bulge-disk decomposition in the $g$, $r$ and $i$-bands to characterize galaxies. For 192 double-component galaxies with $M_{*}>10^{10~}M_{\odot}$ we estimate the color, age and metallicity of the bulge and the disk. The analysis of the $g-i$ colors reveals that bulges are redder …
The connection between the bulge mass or bulge luminosity in disk galaxies and the number, spatial and phase space distribution of associated dwarf galaxies is a discriminator between cosmological simulations related to galaxy formation in cold dark matter and generalized gravity models. Here, a nearby sample of isolated Milky Way class edge-on galaxies is introduced, to facilitate observational campaigns to detect the associated families of dwarf galaxies at low surface brightness. Three galaxy pairs with at least one of the targets being edge-on are also introduced. About 60% of the catalogu…
We present structural parameters and (g-i) bulge/disk colors for a large sample (189) of isolated AMIGA galaxies. The structural parameters of bulges were derived from the 2D bulge/disk/bar decomposition of SDSS i-band images using GALFIT. Galaxies were separated between classical bulges (n_b>2.5) and pseudobulges (n_b<2.5), resulting in a dominant pseudobulge population (94%) with only 12 classical bulges. In the <mu_e>-Re plane, pseudobulges are distributed below the elliptical relation (smaller Re and fainter mu_e), with the closest region to the Kormendy relation populated by those pseudob…
We discuss the mechanism(s) of bar formation in isolated and tidally interacting disk galaxies using the results of idealized collisionless Nbody simulations of the galaxies. In order to better understand the mechanism, we investigate orbital eccentricities (e), epochs of apocenter passages (t_a), azimuthal angles at t_a (varphi_a), precession rates (Omega_pre), for individual stars, as well as bar strengths represented by relative m=2 Fourier amplitude (A_2) and bar pattern speeds (Omega_bar). The main results are as follows. A significant fraction of stars with initially different varphi_a a…
While spiral and lenticular galaxies have large-scale disks extending beyond their bulges, and most local early-type galaxies with 10^{10} < M_*/M_Sun < 2x10^{11} contain a disk (e.g., ATLAS^3D), the early-type galaxies do possess a range of disk sizes. The edge-on, `intermediate-scale' disk in the `disky elliptical' galaxy NGC 1271 has led to some uncertainty as to what its spheroidal component is. Walsh et al. reported a directly measured black hole mass of 3x10^9 M_Sun for this galaxy; which they remarked was an order of magnitude greater than what they expected based on their derivation of…
We present scanning Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of CIG 993, an apparently isolated luminous infrared galaxy also exhibiting luminous blue compact and Wolf-Rayet galaxy features, as well as high star formation rate. Our high resolution observations of the H$α$ emission line allowed us to derive the radial velocity field, as well as the velocity dispersion $σ$, and the residual velocity fields of the galaxy. This galaxy exhibits several kinematical components. On one hand, the velocity gradients detected on the velocity field can be associated with a rotating disk -contrary to previ…
The lenticular galaxy IC 676 is a barred galaxy with double nuclei and active star formation in the central region. In this work we present the long-slit spectroscopy and archival multi-wavelength images to investigate the nature and origin of the double nuclei in IC 676. Through photometric 1D brightness profiles and 2D image decomposition, we show that this galaxy consists of a stellar bar with the length of $\sim$ 2.5 kpc and two Sérsic disks both of which with Sérsic index $\it n \sim$ 1.3. There is probably little or no bulge component assembled in IC 676. The luminosities of the double n…
We report the discovery of spiral galaxies that are as optically luminous as elliptical brightest cluster galaxies, with r-band monochromatic luminosity L_r=8-14L* (4.3-7.5E44 erg/s). These super spiral galaxies are also giant and massive, with diameter D=57-134 kpc and stellar mass M_stars=0.3-3.4E11 M_sun. We find 53 super spirals out of a complete sample of 1616 SDSS galaxies with redshift z<0.3 and L_r>8L*. The closest example is found at z=0.089. We use existing photometry to estimate their stellar masses and star formation rates (SFRs). The SDSS and WISE colors are consistent with normal…
We revisit the color bimodality of galaxies using the extensive EFIGI morphological classification of nearby galaxies. The galaxy SDSS images in the g, r and i bands are decomposed as bulge+disk using SourceXtractor++. The spectral energy distributions made of our gri photometry complemented with GALEX NUV are fitted with ZPEG in order to estimate the stellar masses and specific star formations rates (sSFR) of whole galaxies as well as their bulge and disk components. The absolute NUV-r color versus stellar mass diagram shows a continuous relationship between the present sSFR of galaxies and t…
