Using the moduli space of semiorthogonal decompositions in a smooth projective family, introduced by the second, the third and the fourth author, we propose a novel approach to indecomposability questions for derived categories. Modulo a natural conjecture on the structure of the moduli space, we give both general results, and discuss interesting explicit examples of the behaviour of indecomposability in families, by relating it to the behaviour of the canonical base locus in families. These examples are symmetric powers of curves, certain regular surfaces of general type with large canonical base locus, and Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces. Indecomposability for symmetric powers of curves has been settled via other means, the other cases remain open and we expect that our analysis of the base locus will prove instrumental in finding unconditional proofs.
We prove that the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of the Brill-Noether variety $G^{r}_{d}(C)$ that parametrizing linear series of degree $d$ and dimension $r$ on a general smooth projective curve $C$ is indecomposable when $d\leq g(C)-1$.
In this short note, we observe that Theorem 3.1 in arXiv:1508.00682 for semiorthogonal indecomposability of the derived category of smooth DM stacks based on the canonical bundle can be extended to the case of projective varieties with Cohen-Macaulay singularities. As a consequence, all projective curves of positive arithmetic genus have weakly indecomposable bounded derived categories and indecomposable categories of perfect complexes. Here weak indecomposablility refers to the admissibility of components.
We construct $S$-linear semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of smooth Fano threefold fibrations $X/S$ with relative Picard rank $1$ and rational geometric fibers and discuss how the structure of components of these decompositions is related to rationality properties of $X/S$.
We construct a natural semiorthogonal decomposition for the derived category of an arbitrary flat family of sextic del Pezzo surfaces with at worst du Val singularities. This decomposition has three components equivalent to twisted derived categories of finite flat schemes of degrees 1, 3, and 2 over the base of the family. We provide a modular interpretation for these schemes and compute them explicitly in a number of standard families. For two such families the computation is based on a symmetric version of homological projective duality for $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ and $\mathbb{P}…
It is well known that the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a gerbe banded by a diagonalizable group decomposes according to the characters of the group. We establish the corresponding decomposition of the unbounded derived category of complexes of sheaves with quasi-coherent cohomology. This generalizes earlier work by Lieblich for gerbes over schemes whereas our gerbes may live over arbitrary algebraic stacks. By combining this decomposition with the semi-orthogonal decomposition for a projectivized vector bundle, we deduce a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of a fam…
We generalize the construction given in math.AG/0309435 of a "constant" t-structure on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves $D(X\times S)$ starting with a t-structure on $D(X)$. Namely, we remove smoothness and quasiprojectivity assumptions on $X$ and $S$ and work with t-structures that are not necessarily Noetherian but are close to Noetherian in the appropriate sense. The main new tool is the construction of induced t-structures that uses unbounded derived categories of quasicoherent sheaves and relies on the results of \cite{AJS}. As an application of the "constant" t-structures…
We discuss recent developments in the study of semiorthogonal decompositions of algebraic varieties with an emphasis on their behaviour in families. First, we overview new results concerning homological projective duality. Then we introduce residual categories, discuss their relation to small quantum cohomology, and compute Serre dimensions of residual categories of complete intersections. After that we define simultaneous resolutions of singularities and describe a construction that works in particular for nodal degenerations of even-dimensional varieties. Finally, we introduce the concept of…
The nonexistence of semi-orthogonal decompositions in algebraic geometry is known to be governed by the base locus of the canonical bundle. We study another locus, namely the intersection of the base loci of line bundles that are isomorphic to the canonical bundle in the Néron-Severi group, and show that it also governs the nonexistence of semi-orthogonal decompositions. As an application by using algebraically moving techniques, we prove that the bounded derived category of the $i$-th symmetric product of a smooth projective curve $C$ has no nontrivial semi-orthogonal decompositions when the …
In this paper we prove first a general theorem on semiorthogonal decompositions in derived categories of coherent sheaves for flat families over a smooth base. Based on the results of math.AG/0510670, we then show that the derived categories of coherent sheaves on flag varieties of classical type are generated by complete exceptional collections. Finally, we find complete exceptional collections in the derived categories of some homogeneous spaces of the symplectic groups of small rank.
We study the Hodge theory of twisted derived categories and its relation to the period-index problem. Our main contribution is the development of a theory of twisted Mukai structures for topologically trivial Brauer classes on arbitrary smooth proper varieties and in families. As applications, we construct Hodge classes whose algebraicity would imply period-index bounds; construct new counterexamples to the integral Hodge conjecture on Severi-Brauer varieties; and prove the integral Hodge conjecture for derived categories of Deligne-Mumford surfaces.
We give the description of the t-structure on the derived category of regular holonomic D-modules corresponding to the trivial t-structure on the derived category of constructible sheaves via Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. We give also the condition for a decreasing sequence of families of supports to give a t-structure on the derived category of coherent O-modules.
Given a family of model categories $\cal E \to \cal R$ over a Reedy category, we outline a set of conditions which lead to the existence of a Reedy model structure on the category of sections ${\sf Sect}(\cal R, \cal E)$. We prove that for a wide class of examples, this model structure serves as a strictification of the $(\infty,1)$-category of sections of the higher-categorical family associated to $\cal E \to \cal R$.
In geometric representation theory, one often wishes to describe representations realized on spaces of invariant functions as trace functions of equivariant perverse sheaves. In the case of principal series representations of a connected split reductive group G over a local field, there is a description of families of these representations realized on spaces of functions on G invariant under the translation action of the Iwahori subgroup, or a suitable smaller compact open subgroup, studied by Howe, Bushnell and Kutzko, Roche, and others. In this paper, we construct categories of perverse shea…
We introduce a new method for ``twisting'' relative equivalences of derived categories of sheaves on two spaces over the same base. The first aspect of this is that the derived categories of sheaves on the spaces are twisted. They become derived categories of sheaves on gerbes living over spaces that are locally (on the base) isomorphic to the original spaces. Secondly, this is done in a compatible way so that the equivalence is maintained. We apply this method by proving the conjectures of Donagi and Pantev on dualities between gerbes on genus-one fibrations and comment on other applications …
In arXiv:1503.00125, the authors proved that every complete intersection smooth projective variety $Y$ is a Fano visitor, i.e. its derived category $D^b(Y)$ is equivalent to a full triangulated subcategory of the derived category $D^b(X)$ of a smooth Fano variety $X$, called a Fano host of $Y$. They also introduced the notion of Fano dimension of $Y$ as the smallest dimension of a Fano host $X$ and obtained an upper bound for the Fano dimension of each complete intersection variety. In this paper, we provide a Hodge-theoretic criterion for the existence of a Fano host which enables us to deter…
We apply the technique of S^1-equivariant localization to sheaves on loop spaces in derived algebraic geometry, and obtain a fundamental link between two families of categories at the heart of geometric representation theory. Namely, we categorify the well known relationship between free loop spaces, cyclic homology and de Rham cohomology to recover the category of D-modules on a smooth stack X as a localization of the category of S^1-equivariant coherent sheaves on its loop space LX. The main observation is that this procedure connects categories of equivariant D-modules on flag varieties wit…
We study the category whose objects are trees (with or without roots) and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian, and we study two natural families of modules over these categories. The first takes a tree to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space, or to the homology of the unordered configuration space of its cone. The second takes a tree to a graded piece of the intersection homology of the reciprocal plane of its cone, which is a vector space whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coe…
