So far, the observed effects of dark matter are compatible with it having purely gravitational interactions. However, in many models, dark matter has additional interactions with itself, with the Standard Model, and/or with additional hidden sector states. In this paper, we discuss models in which dark matter interacts through a light vector mediator, giving rise to a long-ranged force between dark matter particles. Coherent scattering effects through this force can lead to the exponential growth of small perturbations, in analogy to electromagnetic plasma instabilities. These instabilities can be significant at couplings many orders of magnitude below those for which the usual particle-by-particle constraints on dark matter self-interactions apply. While this possibility has been noted in the literature, we provide the first systematic study of such instabilities, including the case where the mediator has finite mass. The latter is relevant for models of kinetically mixed `dark photon' mediators, which represent an important target for proposed dark matter detection experiments. Our analyses are of the growth of small perturbations, so do not immediately provide observational constraints on dark matter models - however, they do motivate further study of large regions of parameter space.
Penetrating probes in heavy-ion collisions, like jets and photons, are sensitive to the transport coefficients of the produced quark-gluon plasma, such as shear and bulk viscosity. Quantifying this sensitivity requires a detailed understanding of photon emission and jet-medium interaction in a non-equilibrium plasma. Up to now, such an understanding has been hindered by plasma instabilities which arise out of equilibrium and lead to spurious divergences when evaluating the rate of interaction of hard probes with the plasma. In this paper, we show that taking into account the time evolution of …
The properties of the quark-gluon plasma(QGP) in the presence of baryon chemical potential are studied using the Field Correlator Method(FCM). At low densities the QGP thermodynamics with the colormagnetic confinement and the Polyakov line interaction is in good agreement with lattice data, and the speed of sound satisfies $C_s^2\leq \frac13$,but in the intermediate range of densities the speed of sound displays a singular behaviour and one needs density modifications of the Polyakov line interaction to avoid instabilities. In particular for $μ_q >0.5$ GeV there exists a region in the $(μ, T)$ …
A number of stability criteria exist for dark energy theories, associated with requiring the absence of ghost, gradient and tachyonic instabilities. Tachyonic instabilities are the least well explored of these in the dark energy context and we here discuss and derive criteria for their presence and size in detail. Our findings suggest that, while the absence of ghost and gradient instabilities is indeed essential for physically viable models and so priors associated with the absence of such instabilities significantly increase the efficiency of parameter estimations without introducing unphysi…
Motivated by electromagnetic-field confinement due to plasma near accreting black holes, we continue our exploration of the linear dynamics of an electromagnetic field propagating in curved spacetime in the presence of plasma by including three effects that were neglected in our previous analysis: collisions in the plasma, thermal corrections, and the angular momentum of the background black-hole spacetime. We show that: (i) the plasma-driven long-lived modes survive in a collisional plasma except when the collision timescale is unrealistically small; (ii) thermal effects, which might be relev…
We present a first principles study of chiral plasma instabilities and the onset of chiral turbulence in QED plasmas far from equilibrium. By performing classical-statistical lattice simulations of the microscopic theory, we show that the generation of strong helical magnetic fields from a helicity imbalance in the fermion sector proceeds via three distinct phases. During the initial linear instability regime the helicity imbalance of the fermion sector causes an exponential growth(damping) of magnetic field modes with right(left) handed polarization, for which we extract the characteristic gr…
