Stream stars removed by tides from their progenitor satellite galaxy or globular cluster act as a group of test particles on neighboring orbits, probing the gravitational field of the Milky Way. While constraints from individual streams have been shown to be susceptible to biases, combining several streams from orbits with various distances reduces these biases. We fit a common gravitational potential to multiple stellar streams simultaneously by maximizing the clustering of the stream stars in action space. We apply this technique to members of the GD-1, Pal 5, Orphan and Helmi streams, exploiting both the individual and combined data sets. We describe the Galactic potential with a Stäckel model, and vary up to five parameters simultaneously. We find that we can only constrain the enclosed mass, and that the strongest constraints come from the GD-1, Pal 5 and Orphan streams whose combined data set yields $M(< 20\ \mathrm{kpc}) = 2.96^{+0.25}_{-0.26} \times 10^{11} \ M_{\odot}$. When including the Helmi stream in the data set, the mass uncertainty increases to $M(< 20\ \mathrm{kpc}) = 3.12^{+3.21}_{-0.46} \times 10^{11} \ M_{\odot}$.
We show that a string of HI clouds that form part of the high-velocity cloud complex known as GCN is a probable gaseous stream extending over more than 50 deg in the Galactic halo. The radial velocity gradient along the stream is used to deduce transverse velocities as a function of distance, enabling a family of orbits to be computed. We find that a direction of motion towards the Galactic disk coupled with a mid-stream distance of ~20 kpc provides a good match to the observed sky positions and radial velocities of the HI clouds comprising the stream. With an estimated mass of 10^5 Msun, its …
Stellar halo substructures were identified using statistical photometric parallax of blue main sequence turnoff stars from fourteen Sloan Digital Sky Survey stripes in the north Galactic cap. Four structures are consistent with previous measurements of the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream: the leading tail, the "bifurcated" stream, the trailing tail, and Stream C. The stellar overdensity in Virgo, about 15 kpc from the Sun, could arise from the crossing of the Parallel Stream and a new, candidate stream dubbed the Perpendicular Stream. The data suggests the presence of a wide stream near NGC 546…
In this paper, we present a holistic view of the detection, characterization, and origin of stellar streams in the disk of a simulated Milky Way-like galaxy. The star-by-star simulation of the Galaxy evolves stars born in clusters in a realistic galactic potential that includes spiral arms, a bar, and giant molecular clouds over $5$ Gyr. We first devise a new hybrid method to detect stellar streams that combines phase space density information along with the action-angle space spanned by stars in our simulation. We find that streams' progenitor star clusters and associations are all preferenti…
We present a generative probabilistic model for a tidal stream and demonstrate how this model is used to constrain the Galactic potential. The model takes advantage of the simple structure of a stream in angle and frequency space for the correct potential. We investigate how the method performs on full 6D mock stream data, and mock data with outliers included. As currently formulated the technique is computationally costly when applied to data with large observational errors, but we describe several modifications that promise to make the technique computationally tractable.
We report the discovery of a cold stream near the southern Galactic pole (dubbed as SGP-S) detected in $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3. The stream is at a heliocentric distance of $\sim$ 9.5 kpc and spans nearly 58$^\circ$ by 0.6$^\circ$ on sky. The colour-magnitude diagram of SGP-S indicates an old and metal-poor (age $\sim$ 12 Gyr, [M/H] $\sim$ -2.0 dex) stellar population. The stream's surface brightness reaches an exceedingly low level of $Σ_G \simeq$ 36.2 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Neither extant globular clusters nor other known streams are associated with SGP-S.
The origins of most stellar streams in the Milky Way are unknown. With improved proper motions provided by Gaia EDR3, we show that the orbits of 23 Galactic stellar streams are highly clustered in orbital phase space. Based on their energies and angular momenta, most streams in our sample can plausibly be associated with a specific (disrupted) dwarf galaxy host that brought them into the Milky Way. For eight streams we also identify likely globular cluster progenitors (four of these associations are reported here for the first time). Some of these stream progenitors are surprisingly far apart,…
We have identified the four most significant features in the UV velocity distribution of solar neighborhood stars: H1, H2 in the Hercules stream and W1, W2 in the Wolf 630 stream. We have formulated the problem of determining several characteristics of the central Galactic bar independently from each of the identified features by assuming that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams are of a bar-induced dynamical nature. The problem has been solved by constructing 2:1 resonant orbits in the rotating bar frame for each star in these streams. Analysis of the resonant orbits found has shown that the ba…
Recent Pan-STARRS data show that the leading arm from the globular cluster Palomar 5 (Pal 5) appears shorter than the trailing arm, while simulations of Pal 5 predict similar angular extents. We demonstrate that including the spinning Galactic bar with appropriate pattern speeds in the dynamical modeling of Pal 5 can reproduce the Pan-STARRS data. As the bar sweeps by, some stream stars experience a difference in net torques near pericenter. This leads to the formation of apparent gaps along Pal 5's tidal streams and these gaps grow due to an energy offset from the rest of the stream members. …
We present a novel method for determining the total matter surface density of the Galactic disk by analysing the kinematics of a dynamically cold stellar stream that passes through or close to the Galactic plane. The method relies on the fact that the vertical component of energy for such stream stars is approximately constant, such that their vertical positions and vertical velocities are interrelated via the matter density of the Galactic disk. By testing our method on mock data stellar streams, with realistic phase-space dispersions and Gaia uncertainties, we demonstrate that it is applicab…
We assess the practicality of computing the distance to stellar streams in our Galaxy, using the method of Galactic parallax suggested by Eyre & Binney (2009). We find that the uncertainty in Galactic parallax is dependent upon the specific geometry of the problem in question. In the case of the tidal stream GD-1, the problem geometry indicates that available proper motion data, with individual accuracy ~4 mas/yr, should allow estimation of its distance with about 50 percent uncertainty. Proper motions accurate to ~1 mas/yr, which are expected from the forthcoming Pan-STARRS PS-1 survey, will …
Recent observations have found a 1700 km/s star [S5-HVS1] that was ejected from the Galactic Center approximately five million years ago. This star was likely produced by tidal disruption of a binary. In particular, the Galactic Center contains a few million year old stellar disk that could excite binaries to nearly radial orbits via a secular gravitational instability. Such binaries would be disrupted by the central supermassive black hole, and would also explain the observed cluster of B stars ~0.01 pc from the Galactic Center. In this paper we predict S5-HVS1 is part of a larger stream, and…
We examine the distribution of old, metal-poor stars in a portion of the recently released PanSTARRs survey. We find an interesting confluence of four new cold stellar stream candidates that appear to converge on or pass near the south Galactic pole. The stream candidates, which we designate Murrumbidgee, Molonglo, Orinoco, and Kwando, lie at a distance of approximately 20 kpc and range in length from 13 to 95 degrees, or about 5 to 33 kpc. The stream candidates are between 100 and 300 pc in width, and are estimated to contain between 3000 and 8000 stars each, suggesting progenitors similar to…
Flattened axisymmetric galactic potentials are known to host minor orbit families surrounding orbits with commensurable frequencies. The behavior of orbits that belong to these orbit families is fundamentally different than that of typical orbits with non-commensurable frequencies. We investigate the evolution of stellar streams on orbits near the boundaries between orbit families (separatrices) in a flattened axisymmetric potential. We demonstrate that the separatrix divides these streams into two groups of stars that belong to two different orbit families, and that as a result, these streams…
The Orphan Stream is one of the most prominent tidal streams in the Galactic halo. Using data on red giants, RR Lyrae, and horizontal branch stars from Gaia and other surveys, we determine the proper motion of the Orphan Stream over a path of more than 90 degrees on the sky. We also provide updated tracks for the sky position, distance, and radial velocity of the stream. Our tracks in these latter dimensions mostly agree with previous results. However, there are significant corrections to the earlier distance and latitude tracks as the stream approaches the Galactic disk. Stream stars selected…
We present the results of fitting a flexible stellar stream density model to a collection of thirteen streams around the Milky Way, using photometric data from DES, DECaLS, and Pan-STARRS. We construct density maps for each stream and characterise their tracks on the sky, width, and distance modulus curves along the length of each stream. We use these measurements to compute lengths and total luminosities of streams and identify substructures. Several streams show prominent substructures, such as stream broadening, gaps, large deviations of stream tracks and sharp changes in stream densities. …
We present an analysis of wide-field photometric surveys of the Palomar 5 globular cluster and its stellar stream, based on g- and r-band measures together with narrow-band DDO51 photometry. In this first study, we use the deep (g,r) data to measure the incidence of gaps and peaks along the stream. Examining the star-counts profile of the stream plus contaminating populations, we find no evidence for significant under-densities, and find only a single significant over-density. This is at odds with earlier studies based on matched-filter maps derived from shallower SDSS data if the contaminatin…
We constructed a sample of 13,798 stars with $T\rm_{eff}$, log $g$, [Fe/H], radial velocity, proper motions and parallaxes from LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2 in the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) at the Southern Galactic Cap consisting of areas A and B. Using the distributions in both proper motions and radial velocity, we detected very significant overdensities in these two areas. These substructures most likely are portions of Sagittarius (Sgr) stream. With the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm, 220 candidates stream m…
One of the most promising tracers of the Galactic potential in the halo region are stellar streams. However, individual stream fits can be limited by systematic biases. To study these individual stream systematics, we fit streams in Milky Way-like galaxies from FIRE cosmological galaxy formation simulations with an analytic gravitational potential by maximizing the clustering of stream stars in action space. We show that for coherent streams the quality of the constraints depends on the orbital phase of the observed stream stars, despite the fact that the phase information is discarded in acti…
Stellar streams provide unique probes of galactic potentials, with the longer streams normally providing the cleaner measurements. In this paper, we show an example of a short tidal stream that is particularly sensitive to the shape of the Milky Way's dark matter halo: the globular cluster tidal stream NGC 5466. This stream has an interesting deviation from a smooth orbit at its western edge. We show that such a deviation favours an underlying oblate or triaxial halo (irrespective of plausible variations in the Milky Way disc properties and the specific halo parametrisation chosen); spherical …
Tidal streams don't, in general, delineate orbits. A stream-orbit misalignment is expected to lead to biases when using orbit-fitting to constrain models for the Galactic potential. In this first of two papers we discuss the expected magnitude of the misalignment and the resulting dangers of using orbit-fitting algorithms to constrain the potential. We summarize data for known streams which should prove useful for constraining the Galactic potential, and compute their actions in a realistic Galactic potential. We go on to discuss the formation of tidal streams in angle-action space, and explai…
Recent years have seen the discovery of an ever growing number of stellar debris streams and clouds. These structures are typically detected as extended and often curvilinear overdensities of metal-poor stars that stand out from the foreground disk population. The streams typically stretch tens of degrees or more across the sky, even encircling the Galaxy, and range in heliocentric distance from 3 to 100 kpc. This chapter summarizes the techniques used for finding such streams and provides tables giving positions, distances, velocities, and metallicities, where available, for all major streams…
We present the first full six-dimensional panoramic portrait of the Sagittarius stream, obtained by searching for wide stellar streams in the Gaia DR2 dataset with the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We use the kinematic behavior of the sample to devise a selection of Gaia RR Lyrae, providing excellent distance measurements along the stream. The proper motion data are complemented with radial velocities from public surveys. We find that the global morphological and kinematic properties of the Sagittarius stream are still reasonably well reproduced by the simple Law & Majewski (2010) model (LM10), alth…
We present a new method for constraining the Milky Way halo gravitational potential by simultaneously fitting multiple tidal streams. This method requires full three-dimensional positions and velocities for all stars to be fit, but does not require identification of any specific stream or determination of stream membership for any star. We exploit the principle that the action distribution of stream stars is most clustered when the potential used to calculate the actions is closest to the true potential. Clustering is quantified with the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD), which also provides c…
We investigate the impact of gas accretion in streams on the evolution of disc galaxies, using magneto-hydrodynamic simulations including advection and anisotropic diffusion of cosmic rays generated by supernovae as the only source of feedback. Stream accretion has been suggested as an important galaxy growth mechanism in cosmological simulations and we vary their orientation and angular momentum in idealised setups. We find that accretion streams trigger the formation of galactic rings and enhanced star formation. The star formation rates and consequently the cosmic ray driven outflow rates a…
We have identified the four most significant features in the UV velocity distribution of solar neighborhood stars: H1,H2 and W1,W2 in the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams respectively. We have put the task of determining number of characteristics of the central Galactic bar independently from each of the identified features by assuming that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams have a bar-induced dynamical nature. The problem has been solved by constructing 2:1 resonant orbits in the rotating bar frame for each star in these streams. Analysis of the resonant orbits found has shown that the bar patter…
The Ophiuchus stellar stream is peculiar: (1) its length is short given the age of its constituent stars, and (2) several probable member stars that lie close in both sky position and velocity have dispersions in these dimensions that far exceed those seen within the stream. The stream's proximity to the Galactic center suggests that the bar must have a significant influence on its dynamical history: The triaxiality and time-dependence of the bar may generate chaotic orbits in the vicinity of the stream that can greatly affect its morphology. We explore this hypothesis with models of stream fo…
The Galactic bulge shows a double red clump in sight lines with |b| > 5 deg and -3 deg < l < 4 deg. It is interpreted as a signature of an X-shaped structure seen almost edge-on. We measure the proper motions of the stars belonging to the closer and the further arm of the X-shaped structure. The intrinsic kinematic properties of the two arms are found by incorporating information taken from the luminosity function. At b = -5 deg we find that the proper motion difference between the two arms is a linear function of the Galactic longitude for -0.1 deg < l < 0.5 deg, which we interpret as a strea…
We report the discovery of a thin stellar stream found in Pan-STARRS1 photometry near the Galactic bulge in the constellation of Ophiuchus. It appears as a coherent structure in the colour-selected stellar density maps produced to search for tidal debris around nearby globular clusters. The stream is exceptionally short and narrow; it is about 2.5° long and 6' wide in projection. The colour-magnitude diagram of this object, which harbours a blue horizontal-branch, is consistent with an old and relatively metal-poor population ([Fe/H]~-1.3) located 9.5 +/- 0.9 kpc away at (l,b) ~ (5°,+32°), and…
We present a brief history of Galactic astrophysics, and explain the origin of halo substructure in the Galaxy. We motivate our study of tidal streams by highlighting the tight constraints that analysis of the trajectories of tidal streams can place on the form of the Galactic potential. We address the reconstruction of orbits from observations of tidal streams. We upgrade the scheme reported by Binney (2008) and Jin & Lynden-Bell (2007), which reconstructs orbits from streams using radial-velocity measurements, to allow it to work with erroneous input data. The upgraded algorithm can correct …
Because of its particular orientation around the Galaxy - i.e., in a plane nearly perpendicular to the Galactic plane and containing both the Sun and Galactic center - the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream provides a powerful means by which to measure the solar reflex velocity, and thereby infer the velocity of the Local Standard of Rest (LSR), in a way that is independent of assumptions about the solar Galactocentric distance. Moreover, the solar reflex velocity with respect to the stream is projected almost entirely into the proper motion component of Sgr stream stars perpendicular to the Sgr plane, …
We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software als…

The Magellanic HI Stream (~2x10^9 Msun [d/55 kpc]^2) encircling the Galaxy at a distance 'd' is arguably the most important tracer of what happens to gas accreting onto a disk galaxy. Recent observations reveal that the Stream's mass is in fact dominated (3:1) by its ionised component. Here we revisit the origin of the mysterious H-alpha recombination emission observed along much of its length that is overly bright (~150-200 milli-Rayleigh) for the known Galactic ultraviolet background (~20-40 mR / [d/55 kpc]^2). In an earlier model, we proposed that a slow shock cascade was operating along th…
The Fermi satellite discovery of the gamma-ray emitting bubbles extending 50 deg (10 kpc) from the Galactic Centre has revitalized earlier claims that our Galaxy has undergone an explosive episode in the recent past. We now explore a new constraint on such activity. The Magellanic Stream is a clumpy gaseous structure passing over the South Galactic Pole (SGP) at a distance of at least 50-100 kpc. Patchy H-alpha emission discovered along the Magellanic Stream over the SGP is a factor of 5 too bright to have been produced by the Galactic stellar population. Time-dependent models of Stream clouds…
Using GALAH survey data of nearby stars, we look at how structure in the planar (u,v) velocity distribution depends on metallicity and on viewing direction within the Galaxy. In nearby stars, with distance d < 1 kpc, the Hercules stream is most strongly seen in higher metallicity stars [Fe/H] > 0.2. The Hercules stream peak v value depends on viewed galactic longitude, which we interpret as due to the gap between the stellar stream and more circular orbits being associated with a specific angular momentum value of about 1640 km/s kpc. The association of the gap with a particular angular moment…
It has been proposed that the Hercules stream, a group of co-moving stars in the Solar neighborhood offset from the bulk of the velocity distribution, is the result of resonant interactions between stars in the outer disk and the Galactic bar. So far it has only been seen in the immediate Solar neighborhood, but the resonance model makes a prediction over a large fraction of the Galactic disk. I predict the distribution of stellar velocities and the changing Hercules feature in this distribution as a function of location in the Galactic disk in a simple model for the Galaxy and the bar that pr…
A group of Mira variables in the solar neighborhood show unusual spatial motion in the Galaxy. To study this motion in a much larger scale in the Galaxy, we newly surveyed 134 evolved stars off the Galactic plane by SiO maser lines, obtaining accurate radial velocities of 84 detected stars. Together with the past data of SiO maser sources, we analyzed the radial velocity data of a large sample of sources distributing in a distance range of about 0.3 -- 6 kpc in the first Galactic quadrant. At the Galactic longitudes between 20 and 40 deg, we found a group of stars with large negative radial ve…
We present CluSTAR-ND, a fast hierarchical galaxy/(sub)halo finder that produces {\bf Clu}stering {\bf S}tructure via {\bf T}ransformative {\bf A}ggregation and {\bf R}ejection in {\bf N}-{\bf D}imensions. It is designed to improve upon Halo-OPTICS -- an algorithm that automatically detects and extracts significant astrophysical clusters from the 3D spatial positions of simulation particles -- by decreasing run-times, possessing the capability for metric adaptivity, and being readily applicable to data with any number of features. We directly compare these algorithms and find that not only doe…
We present abundances for 20 elements for stars in two stellar streams identified by Arifyanto & Fuchs (2006, A&A, 449, 533): 18 stars from the Arcturus stream and 26 from a new stream, which we call AF06 stream, both from the Galactic thick disk. Results show both streams are metal-poor and very old (10$-$14 Gyrs) with kinematics and abundances overlapping with the properties of local field thick disk stars. Both streams exhibit a range in metallicity but with relative elemental abundances that are identical to those of thick disk stars of the same metallicity. These results show that neither…
In the first of these two papers we demonstrated that assuming streams delineate orbits can lead to order one errors in potential parameters for realistic Galactic potentials. Motivated by the need for an improvement on orbit-fitting, we now present an algorithm for constraining the Galactic potential using tidal streams without assuming that streams delineate orbits. This approach is independent of the progenitor mass so is valid for all observed tidal streams. The method makes heavy use of angle-action variables and seeks the potential which recovers the expected correlations in angle space.…
We report the discovery of a $75°$ long stellar stream in Gaia DR2 catalog, found using the new STREAMFINDER algorithm. The structure is probably the remnant of a now fully disrupted globular cluster, lies $\approx 3.8 \, {\rm kpc}$ away from the Sun in the direction of the Galactic bulge, and possesses highly retrograde motion. We find that the system orbits close to the Galactic plane at Galactocentric distances between $4.9$ and $19.8 \, {\rm kpc}$. The discovery of this extended and extremely low surface brightness stream ($Σ_G\sim 34.3 \, {\rm mag \, arcsec^{-2}}$) with a mass of only $25…
Extending for over 200 degrees across the sky, the Magellanic Stream together with its Leading Arm is the most spectacular example of a gaseous stream in the local Universe. The Stream is an interwoven tail of filaments trailing the Magellanic Clouds as they orbit the Milky Way. Thought to be created by tidal forces, ram pressure, and halo interactions, the Stream is a benchmark for dynamical models of the Magellanic System, a case study for gas accretion and dwarf-galaxy accretion onto galaxies, a probe of the outer halo, and the bearer of more gas mass than all other Galactic high velocity c…
The local stellar halo of the Milky Way contains the debris from several past accretion events. Here we study in detail the structure and properties of nearby debris associated with the Helmi streams, originally identified as an overdensity in integrals of motion space. We use 6D phase-space information from Gaia EDR3 combined with spectroscopic surveys, and we analyse the orbits and frequencies of the stars in the streams using various Galactic potentials. We also explore how the Helmi streams constrain the flattening q, of the Galactic dark matter halo. We find that the streams are split int…
Stars aligned in thin stream-like features (feathers), with widths of $δ\sim1-10^{\circ}$ and lengths as large as $Δl\sim180^{\circ}$, have been observed towards the Anticenter of our Galaxy and their properties mapped in abundances and phase-space. We study their origin by analysing similar features arising in an N-body simulation of a Galactic disc interacting with a Sagittarius-like dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr). By following the orbits of the particles identified as contributing to feathers backwards in time, we trace their excitation to one of Sgr's previous pericentric passages. These pa…
It has been suggested that a resonance between a rotating bar and stars in the solar neighbourhood can produce the so called 'Hercules stream'. Recently, a second bar may have been identified in the Galactic centre, the so called 'long bar', which is longer and much flatter than the traditional Galactic bar, and has a similar mass. We looked at the dynamical effects of both bars, separately and together, on orbits of stars integrated backwards from local position and velocities, and a model of the Galactic potential which includes the bars directly. Both bars can produce Hercules like features…
We have performed the observation of the "Galactic Center Mini-spiral(GCMS)" in H42alpha recombination line as a part of the first large-scale mosaic observation in the Sagittarius A complex using Atacama Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). We revealed the kinematics of the ionized gas streamers of the GCMS. We found that the ionized gas streamers of the Northern Arm(NA) and Eastern Arm(EA) in their outer regions somewhat deviate from the Keplerian orbits which were derived previously from the trajectories in the inner regions. In addition, we found that the streamer corresponding to the B…
We study the effect of drag induced by the Galactic hot halo on the two neutral hydrogen (HI) cloud complexes associated with the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds: the Magellanic Stream (MS) and the Leading Arm (LA). In particular, we adopt the numerical models of previous studies and re-simulate the tidal formation of the MS and LA with the inclusion of a drag term. We find that the drag has three effects which, although model-dependent, may bring the tidal formation scenario into better agreement with observations: correcting the LA kinematics, reproducing the MS column density gradient, an…
Tidal streams of globular clusters are ideal tracers of the Galactic gravitational potential. Compared to the few known, complex and diffuse dwarf-galaxy streams, they are kinematically cold, have thin morphologies and are abundant in the halo of the Milky Way. Their coldness and thinness in combination with potential epicyclic substructure in the vicinity of the stream progenitor turns them into high-precision scales. With the example of Palomar 5, we demonstrate how modeling of a globular cluster stream allows us to simultaneously measure the properties of the disrupting globular cluster, it…
We present a data-driven method for reconstructing the galactic acceleration field from phase-space measurements of stellar streams. Our approach is based on a flexible and differentiable fit to the stream in phase-space, enabling a direct estimate of the acceleration vector along the stream. Reconstruction of the local acceleration field can be applied independently to each of several streams, allowing us to sample the acceleration field due to the underlying galactic potential across a range of scales. Our approach is methodologically different from previous works, since a model for the grav…
The structure of the Sagittarius stream in the Southern Galactic hemisphere is analysed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8. Parallel to the Sagittarius tidal track, but ~ 10deg away, there is another fainter and more metal-poor stream. We provide evidence that the two streams follow similar distance gradients but have distinct morphological properties and stellar populations. The brighter stream is broader, contains more metal-rich stars and has a richer colour-magnitude diagram with multiple turn-offs and a prominent red clump as compared to the fainter stream. Based on the stru…
I describe two novel techniques originally devised to select strongly lensed quasar candidates in wide-field surveys. The first relies on outlier selection in optical and mid-infrared magnitude space; the second combines mid-infrared colour selection with GAIA spatial resolution, to identify multiplets of objects with quasar-like colours. Both methods have already been applied successfully to the SDSS, ATLAS and DES footprints: besides recovering known lenses from previous searches, they have led to new discoveries, including quadruply lensed quasars, which are rare within the rare-object clas…
Star streams in galactic halos are long, thin, unbound structures that will be disturbed by the thousands dark matter sub-halos that are predicted to be orbiting within the main halo. A sub-halo generally induces a localized wave in the stream which often evolves into a "z-fold" as an initially trailing innermost part rotates faster than an initially leading outermost part. The folding, which becomes increasingly complex with time, leads to an apparent velocity dispersion increase and thickening of the stream. We measure the equivalent velocity dispersion around the local mean in the simulatio…
We report the discovery of diffuse far-infrared and far-ultraviolet emission projected near the interacting pair NGC4435/4438, in the Virgo cluster. This feature spatially coincides with a well known low surface-brightness optical plume, usually interpreted as tidal debris. If extragalactic, this stream would represent not only one of the clearest examples of intracluster dust, but also a rare case of intracluster molecular hydrogen and large-scale intracluster star formation. However, the ultraviolet, far-infrared, HI and CO emission as well as the dynamics of this feature are extremely unusu…
